Cast Announced For The Revival Of West Side Story

After much speculation and rumors complete casting was announced today for the upcoming revival of West Side Story. The cast of this landmark musical will feature an array of Broadway veterans as well as a few newcomers. Playing the star crossed lovers Tony and Maria are Matt Cavenaugh(A Catered Affair,Grey Gardens,Urban Cowboy)and 21 year old Broadway newcomer and acclaimed opera singer from Buenos Aires Josefina Scaglione. Rounding out the cast is one of my favorites Karen Olivo (In The Heights) as Anita. Portraying the parts of rival gang leaders Riff and Bernardo are Cody Green and George Akram. It has been almost 30 years since the last revival and I can't wait to see this one. Expect West Side Story to be a big contender come Tony time.

2008-2009 Broadway Season Part 2

Between now and the end of the year eight shows are scheduled to open on Broadway. Here are just a few set to open within the next month.

Billy Elliot(Imperial Theatre)
Currently in previews. Opening Night-November 13. Open Run.
Fresh from a sold out run in London is Billy Elliot. Now it's no secret that over the last few weeks this show has has it's share of troubles. From having to stop the show a record five times during one performance due to technical difficulties, to having to cancel a performance mere minutes before curtain, might make you think that Billy Elliot is headed for disaster. Look we all know things are going to happen during previews. That's why they have them. To fix whatever problems may arise before the critics come. No matter what you have heard or have read that fact remains that Billy Elliot is a charming and uplifting story that in my opinion will run for a very long time. No matter what the critics say.

American Buffalo(Belasco Theatre)
First Preview-October 31. Opening Night-November 17.
The second David Mamnet show of the season(Speed-The-Plow which just opened to rave reviews)is American Buffalo. Featuring an all star cast(John Leguizamo,Cedric The Entertainer,Hayley Joel Osment)American Buffalo centers on the bungled robbery of a rare and valuable American Buffalo nickel from a neighborhood collector. I myself can't wait to see what type of chemistry these three talented actor's will have during this roller coater ride of a play.

Dividing The Estate(Booth Theatre)
Currently in previews. Opening Night-November 20.
Following a successful run Off-Broadway Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Horton Foote's new play open this fall on Broadway. If the past reviews are any indication expect this show to do very well.

Irving Berlin's White Christmas(Marquis Theatre)
First Preview-November 14. Opening Night-November 23. Closes January 4.
You've seen the movie. You know the songs. Now see this holiday classic live on the Broadway stage. If ticket sales are any indication expect this show to be an annual event.

Liza's At The Palace(Palace Theatre)
Opens December 3. Closes December 14.
That's right folks. The diva herself returns to the Broadway stage for nine performances this December. The only question is will she get thru every show? My guess is that this could be the comeback that all her fans have been waiting for. We shall see.

Quite a season huh?

Next Week: My thoughts on Slava's Snowshow,Pal Joey, and Shrek The Musical. Until next time theatre lovers.

Last Chances to see the Mega Hit "Hairspray" before it closes Jan. 4, 2009; Harvey Fierstein Returns Nov. 11th

"Hairspray" has had one heck of a run -- more than 2,600 performances -- by the time it closes January 4 at the Neil Simon Theatre. But the show, based on John Waters' cult movie classic, is going out with a bang and its original star, Harvey Fierstein.
The actor will return to the musical, which opened in August 2002, for its last eight weeks, November 11-January 4. He will reprise his Tony-winning role of Edna Turnblad, the goodhearted mother of Tracy Turnblad, would-be TV teen dance star in 1960s Baltimore.
"Hairspray" has grossed more than $265 million during its Broadway run and was made into a movie musical with John Travolta in the Fierstein role.
There's no decision yet on what will go into the Neil Simon, a desirable 1,400-seat theater that usually houses musicals. But Variety has reported a possible tenant next fall could be the American company of "Dirty Dancing," which just opened in Chicago, Illinois, and will play Boston, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles, California, in 2009.
So don't miss out on seeing the original Edna in all of her Drag Queen glory, live on Broadway! Call an Applause Sales Expert now and get your tickets before it's too late. Hey, also, mention the Applause Insider Deal and take advantage of some big savings now through Mid-November! 800-451-9930

Is The Economy Effecting Broadway?

Unless you've been living under a rock you have probably heard that we are in the middle of an economic crisis. People are losing their jobs, and entire companies are going bankrupt. In these trying times you would think that the last thing people want to do is shell out hundreds of dollars to see a Broadway show right? Well that's what I thought too. But you know what? The phones are still ringing and people are still buying tickets to their favorite shows. I guess the saying is true."The more things change the more they stay the same." No matter what Broadway will always be here. To make us smile and to make us laugh. To make us cry and to make us think. Broadway is what makes the world a better place. If only for a little while.

Mamet to the Max on Broadway as Speed the Plow and American Buffalo get ready to open

On Broadway this season, everywhere you look there’s a f*#@*# David Mamet play (to use one of his favorite words).
The fest of work by the profanity-prone writer — one of the rare contemporary playwrights who can boast name recognition from the general public — kicks off Oct. 23 with the opening of “Speed-the-Plow,” to be followed Nov. 17 by another revival, “American Buffalo.” Also coming up: a developing production of Mamet’s “Oleanna,” said to be aiming for a spring berth.
The timing of the three offerings, each from a different production team, is accidental, according to producers. But coming on the heels of the 2005 Tony-winning revival of Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” and last season’s political comedy “November,” the coincidence starts to look like something of a Rialto resurgence for the playwright.
Producers and creatives attribute the Mamet influx to the enduring relevance of the writers work. And although the scheduling raises concerns of diluting the always-small playgoing audience with a surfeit of shows by the same author, producers are hoping the increased attention on the writer will boost all three shows.
“Plow” and “Buffalo,” the two confirmed Mamet productions for the season, are superficially similar: Both have starry, three-person casts helmed by a director with long-standing ties to the playwright.
First up is the 1988 comedy about dueling Hollywood producers, “Plow.” Jeremy Piven, currently in his fifth season playing a Tinseltown insider in HBO skein “Entourage,” co-stars with Broadway vet Raul Esparza (“Company,” “The Homecoming”), both playing producers. Elisabeth Moss, one of the stars of buzz-magnet, Emmy-winning TV show “Mad Men,” portrays the temp assistant who comes between them. The $2.2 million production is directed by Neil Pepe.
A week after the Oct. 23 opening of “Plow,” “American Buffalo,” Mamet’s breakthrough 1976 play about three hustlers planning a heist, begins previews in a staging capitalized at $2.6 million. John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer and Haley Joel Osment star in the show, directed by Robert Falls. Like Mamet, Falls hails from Chicago, where he is a.d. of the Goodman Theater — which hosted a Mamet fest in 2006.
And then there’s the potential for a new production of the 1992 Off Broadway battle-of-the-sexes hit “Oleanna,” said to be shooting for spring with Julia Stiles reprising a role she played in London in 2004. Producer Jeffrey Finn wouldn’t confirm details but did acknowledge he was working on it.
©2008 Jenny Anderson for Broadway.com“ ‘Speed-the-Plow’ could have been written yesterday,” says Jeffrey Richards, who produces “Plow” with Jerry Frankel and Steve Traxler. (The team also backed “Glengarry” and “November.”)
Richards also believes “Plow” has been overlooked in Mamet’s canon, thanks in large part to the headline-grabbing casting of Madonna in its original production.
“I always felt it had been overshadowed as ‘The Madonna Play,’ ” he says.
Ben Sprecher, who produces “Buffalo” with Elliot Martin (producer of the play’s 1983 revival starring Al Pacino), feels his own production also has topical appeal in an economically uncertain climate.
“It’s a savage comic tragedy about capitalism,” Falls explains.
Sprecher aims to make “Buffalo” stand out with its multiracial cast.
“We think we’re the only play that has the elements of youth, color and edge on Broadway this season,” he says. “We have three markets — the Latino audience, the black audience and the youth market — and we also have the Mamet fans, who are usually traditional theatergoers.”
The timing of the three productions is entirely accidental, according to those involved.
“Great playwrights are great playwrights,” Pepe says. “We’ve gone up and down in terms of when we see lots of Albee, lots of Pinter, lots of Miller.”
Mamet’s characteristic rat-tat-tat dialogue and recurring themes — including manhood, loyalty and work — have had lasting effects on subsequent legit creatives. “He’s been a giant influence,” Falls says. “Now there’s a new generation of actors and directors who want to do his work.”
“He writes great parts for great actors,” Sprecher adds — a handy characteristic when plays usually need a bankable star or two to have a chance at recouping.
“It’ll offer an interesting contrast,” Richards says of Broadway’s crop of competing Mamet productions. “They complement each other.”
“The multitude of Mamet plays just heightens awareness,” Finn adds. “It can only bode well for all of us.” So take advantage of the Mamet renaissance and call Applause Theatre Service and speak to a Sales Expert who can offer the best seats at the best prices for the hottest shows on Broadway(ask for the Applause Insider Deal for some incredible savings) . 800-451-9930

Will Ferrell to Bring Solo Show to Broadway's Cort Theatre in January; 39 Steps to Move to Helen Hayes on Jan 20 after Slava's Snowshow closes; Whew!

Applause Theatre Service has learned that Will Ferrell will bring the one-man show You're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush to the Cort Theatre, January 20-March 15, according to The New York Times. The production, which will open on February 1, will be directed by Adam McKay. Lots of action between the Cort and Helen Hayes Theaters!

Meanwhile, the theater's current tenant, The 39 Steps will close at the Cort on January 11 and then move to the Helen Hayes Theatre on January 20, following the departure of Slava's Snowshow, the Drama Desk and Olivier Award-winning Slava's Snowshow, the surreal and wordless clown show set in a stark, wintry landscape, which will make its Broadway debut Dec. 2 at the Helen Hayes Theatre before an official opening Dec. 7.
The limited engagement of the international phenomenon, seen in 80 cities, will close Jan. 4, 2009, but not before literally blasting thousands of theatregoers with pounds of (artificial) snow in the climax of the piece — yes, a blizzard. You're likely to find snow in your coat pockets weeks after attending.

Last Chances! Spamalot to Close on Broadway in January 2009

Applause Theatre Service has learned that one of my favorite current Broadway shows Monty Python's Spamalot, the 2005 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, will end its reign at Broadway's Shubert Theatre Jan. 18, 2009.
When it closes, the musical will have played a total of 35 previews and 1,582 regular performances.
The New York company currently features Michael Siberry and Merle Dandridge, who play, respectively, King Arthur and Lady of the Lake, with Tom Deckman, Rick Holmes, Bradley Dean, Wally Dunn and David Hibbard. "American Idol" finalist Clay Aiken, who finishes his return engagement Jan. 4, 2009, also stars as Sir Robin.
When Spamalot closes on Broadway, it will have grossed over $175,000,000 and will have been seen by more than two million people. The musical recouped its entire investment in under six months.
Spamalot features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle, music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, direction by Mike Nichols, choreography by Casey Nicholaw and is based on the screenplay of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" by Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.
The musical tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest from God for the Holy Grail — with a short stop in the dazzling Spam-filled land of Camelot.
Spamalot earned the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and took home honors for direction (Mike Nichols) and one of its stars (Sara Ramirez).
Spamalot celebrated its third anniversary on Broadway March 18.
On Broadway Spamalot plays Tuesday-Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2 and 8 PM and Sunday at 2 and 7 PM.

Bill Irwin and Nathan Lane Will Be Waiting for Godot on Broadway in Spring 2009

Applause Theatre Service has learned of a planned Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Bob Fosse's Dancin' will be bumped to the 2009-10 season to make way for a starry revival of a classic of world literature starting in April 2009: Tony Award winners Bill Irwin and Nathan Lane will star in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.
The existential classic in which clowns and their companions wait on a barren landscape (the setting is "a country road") will be directed by Tony winner Anthony Page at Studio 54, one of Roundabout's two Broadway homes.
Irwin (Fool Moon, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) will play Vladimir, and Lane (The Producers, Butley, Guys and Dolls) will play Estragon.
Waiting for Godot will begin previews April 10, 2009, and open officially April 30, 2009, at Studio 54, 254 West 54th Street. This will be a limited engagement. (9 to 5, the new musical based on the film of the same name, has also announced an April 30, 2009, opening date at Broadway's Marquis Theatre. That marks the final night of the 2008-09 Broadway season, and the cutoff date for the 2009 Tony Awards.)
Additional casting and a design team for the 2009 Godot production will be announced.
Irwin played Lucky in the 1988 Lincoln Center Theater revival of the play, which featured Robin Williams as Estragon and Steve Martin as Vladimir.
According to Roundabout, "Waiting for Godot remains Samuel Beckett's most magical and beautiful allegory. The story revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone — or something — named Godot. Vladimir (Bill Irwin) and Estragon (Nathan Lane) wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning."

Get Tickets To Broadway's #1 Play August:Osage County Thru Applause Theatre Service

After missing my chance to see August:Osage County on two previous occasions I finally got the chance to see the show last night. All I can say is, "It was worth the wait!" From the first moments of the show I was drawn into this hysterical and complex play. Having lived in the city for 17 years I have seen hundreds of shows. After last night I can honestly say that August:Osage County ranks up there with the top shows I have ever seen. Now for those of you who might be turned off by the length of the show,(it clocks in at 3 hrs. and 20 minutes)I say don't be. This play could have gone another 3 hrs and it still wouldn't have been enough. Now to say that the Westin family is a little dysfunctional is an understatement. These folks are messed up. But I think that is what makes the show so humorous at times. If you haven't seen the show I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.

Some fine acting chops displayed by Mr Potter in the Revival of "Equus"

The current revival of "Equus" now playing at the Broadhurst Theatre and starring Daniel Radcliffe(AKA Harry Potter) and Richard Griffiths is a wonderful piece of theatre that should be seen. It's a bizarre and haunting play that stays with you well after you leave the theater. I wasn't expecting Mr. Radcliffe to be so emotionally and deeply involved in his character as he was. He gives a commanding and very powerful performance that come Tony time, he may very well get a nomination and perhaps even win the darn thing! I give him a lot of credit for taking on such a difficult role for his Broadway debut. It also takes a lot of chutzpah to stand up there in your birthday suite for what amounts to be a good 10 minutes. He's a brave one and has nothing to be ashamed of!! Mr. Griffiths offers a subdued performance, almost taking a back seat to Daniel's character to make the show his own. The supporting cast are all fine including the terrific Kate Mulgrew. This is a limited run and already has a large advance sale.

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker At Applause Theatre Service

American mystic Joseph Campbell said, "Follow your bliss." As I sit here at my computer I am finding out how true that statement is. I came to this city to pursue my dream of working in the theatre. Now some 16 years later I feel that I am on the verge of finally making those dreams come true. Sure there have been ups and downs over the years. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy. But through it all I have been lucky enough to remain steadily employed until my big break arrives. Since 2004 I have been working at Applause Theatre Service as a ticket broker. Just like theatre it too has its ups and downs. September 11 almost destroyed the industry. Now some 7 years later the economy is in the worst shape it has been in a very long time, and yet the phones keep ringing day in and day out. In the worst of times we need theatre to put a smile on our face. Isn't that what it's all about?

Now not only am I looking forward to this production but I am anxious to see the renovation of the Nederlander Theatre which was of course home to my favorite show of all time,Rent. With the addition of Guys and Dolls to this seasons other revivals of Pal Joey, West Side Story, and Hair, this season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones in years. Yay for Broadway!

Haven't See Last Year's Biggest Winner In The Heights? Call Applause

In The Heights, winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical tells the story of three days in the life of Washington Heights, a tight knit community at the top of Manhattan. Besides being very uplifting In The Heights features some of the most innovative choreography ever seen On or Off-Broadway. Not to mention fantastic performances from top to bottom. If you are coming to New York and only have one show to see than In The Heights is the one. Get your tickets now. We are only a phone call away.

Slava's Snowshow To Open On Broadway This Fall

Slava's Snowshow which had a successful run Off-Broadway from 2004-2007 is set to make it's Broadway debut this fall at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Slava's Snowshow which was created and directed by (and starring) the internationally renowned clown Slava Polunin won the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Event, and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for it outlandish and otherworldly costumes. Previews are set to begin on November 11 and run thru January 4. According to press notes,"Slava's Snowshow famously ends with a blinding light and a blizzard of fake snow blowing into the audience and piling up around the ankles of theatregoers.
Performances are expected to play Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday-Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 4 PM & 8 PM, Sunday at 2 PM and 6 PM, with additions and variations in that schedule due to accommodate the holidays. Sounds like a great show for families and a nice alternative to Radio City Christmas Spectacular and this years newest arrival White Christmas. I can't wait!

Hairspray Set To Close In January

Bearing a boost at the box office, Hairspray is set to close on January 18. Winner of 7 2003 Tony Awards,Hairspray is about a plus-size girl who breaks barriers on local TV in the 1960s. Being in the industry I'm in we are often invited to presentations or in the case of Hairspray the final dress rehearsal prior to the first preview. Even from the first show I could tell it was going to be a hit. And I was right. Most shows are lucky to last 1-2 years let alone 6 1/2 like Hairspray. I would say that's pretty good. Now there is a rumour that Tony Award Winner and original star Harvey Fierstein has agreed to return to close the show. So if you want a chance to see him or the show I wouldn't wait. January is just around the corner.

Get Tickets To See West Side Story On Broadway Thru Applause Theatre Service

The new Broadway production of West Side Story, directed by Arthur Laurents, will begin previews Feb. 23, 2009, at the Palace Theatre(current home to Legally Blonde)According to producer Kevin McCollum,(Tony Award winning producer of Rent, Avenue Q, and In The Heights)this new production will "introduce the unprecedented element of selectively weaving Spanish throughout both the book and songs." West Side Story librettist Arthur Laurents who was recently lauded for his highly successful production of Gypsy recently stated that,"This show will be radically different from any other production of West Side Story ever done. The musical theatre and cultural conventions of 1957 made it next to impossible for the characters to have authenticity. Every member of both gangs was always a potential killer even then. Now they actually will be. Only Tony and Maria try to live in a different world." Expect this new production of this landmark musical to be one of the most highly anticipated of the season. I can't wait!
