"The Little Mermaid" Will Sink to the Bottom of Broadway's Ocean of Failures as it's Set to Close August 30th

POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS! Another one bites the dust! Applause has just learned that Disney's lavish Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid, will end Aug. 30 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, but the producer is sending her to wider waters. A national tour will launch in fall 2010.
The stage version of the hit animated film borrowed Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's movie songs and added new songs by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. Opera director Francesca Zambello directed. Tony Award winner Faith Prince has recently stepped into the show as sea witch Ursula, one of the few characters who doesn't "swim" across the stage on roller-skate-like sneakers. I loved the show and will be sad to see it go!

There is talk in the theatre community that the Lunt-Fontanne will be the home of the new musical The Addams Family starting in early 2010, but that could not be confirmed at press time.

The Little Mermaid will have played 50 previews and 685 performances by the time it closes.
Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions, said in a June 30 statement, "Director Francesca Zambello, our creators, designers and cast conjured a world unlike any Broadway has seen before, and audiences have been captivated by it at every explosive performance. We are tremendously proud of the show and are confident we'll have an excellent summer but it would be fiscally irresponsible to our shareholders to risk operating losses with such a big show in the historically challenging fall months. We are closing the Broadway production to concentrate on the long future life of this title — beginning with next year's national tour and upcoming international productions."

Disney still has The Lion King and Mary Poppins on Broadway doing great business! Call Applause now to get great seats at the best prices for all the Disney shows. Ask for the Below Face Value Deal now being offered for most Broadway and Off-Broadway shows by calling 800-451-9930

Hair long beautiful Hair!

Almost exactly a year ago, I went to see HAIR in Central Park. I was so excited as growing up this was one of my most favorite musicals. I watched the movie over and over and over again. I guess I was a wannabe hippie. At least then I had the long beautiful hair too…not so much these days, but I still think I may be a wannabe hippie. Anyhow, I had the most amazing time seeing the show in the park. When I heard they were moving it to Broadway my first reaction was no way it won’t work as well. Well, how wrong I was! This show is even better than it was in the park and that says a lot.
It has more energy and excitement of any show I have seen on Broadway in such a long time.
For a show written in the 60’s about a tribe of New York hippies one would think this might be a dated revival. However, this show has as much or even more poignancy today as it did then.
But it is also just pure enjoyment of familiar music performed by a beautiful cast. With songs like Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Easy To Be Hard, to the title song Hair James Rando, Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot created a score that set the stage for Rock musicals today.
For those with concern…Everything from drug use, to profanity, to nudity is all handled with such great care as not to offend or shock anyone from 13 to 113. As shocking as it was in the 60’s we have lived through all the shock and so much more today that we are not anesthetized but far more understanding of why they needed to go to these measures to stand up for their rights of freedom and independence.
Not surprising that this crowd pleasing show won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. It adds just enough audience participation to make everyone feel a part of the show without being intrusive. I have never seen so many in an audience having so much fun. But it is not all fun and games…the seriousness of the piece is still apparent and definitely hits home as we have been watching our involvement in war for the last 8 years.

Yankees Return Home On A Roll

The Yankees return to the Stadium tonight to start a 7 game homestand fresh off a sweep of the Mets in the subway series over the weekend, and riding a 5 game winning streak overall. They play 3 with Seattle before an important 4 game series July 4th weekend with division rival Toronto. Currently the Yankees sit in 2nd place in the American League East, 3.5 games behind the hated Red Sox. The divison is tightening up as the defending AL Champs Tampa Bay Rays have started to heat up and are only 1.5 behind the Yankees in 3rd place.
Joba Chamberlain will be on the mound tonight to start the homestand. Hes had an inconsistent year but pitched very well in his last start in a win against Atlanta, so he’ll look to build on that. Applause has tickets to all Yankee games this week and throughout the season, go give us a call today to see the Yankees in action at beautiful New Yankee Stadium. What better way to spend a warm summer afternoon or evening than at the ballpark?

HOW APPLAUSE DEFINES MIDDLEMAN

Many of us look at the term Middleman as derogatory, an individual who charges a fee usually for doing nothing. This is not the case with Applause. We are redefining the term Middleman.
We are providing a service to our clients by providing tickets that are BFV (BELOW FACE VALUE). While to many price is the most important factor, many also need assistance on which show to choose. Is it suitable for a certain age group, is it risque or offensive, is it entertaining, etc. All the information in the world is on Google, Yahoo, etc. but do you have time to read it all. There is nothing like an experienced member of Applause's staff to aid you in making a selection of a Broadway show. Applause has been in business for over 20 years. Our biggest asset is our staff, many of whom have been here since they graduated college. Let us earn your trust that you are getting the best price and the best assistance in selecting a show on Broadway.

Longing for Normalcy

Doesn’t everyone long to be Normal? Or have the Normal family? Most people think that everyone else around is normal except them. I hear people say all the time to other people “I wish my family was normal like yours”. Truth is, in this day and age every family has struggles to deal with. Hence the very popular term used today “disfunctional family”. Whatever it may be from divorce to mental illness, these days we all have issues that seem to make it difficult for a family to survive together. NEXT TO NORMAL is a musical that deals with one such family that is struggling to hold together in the midst of a Mother’s long term battle with mental illness. This may not seem like a topic to write a musical about but believe me this powerhouse show is so full of emotion you can’t help but be left overwhelmed.
This small Rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt was nominated this year for 11 Tony Awards including Best New Musical. Although it did not win that category, it is still one of the best new shows you could see. It did win the Tony Award for the show’s lead actress Alice Ripley who gives a very moving performance as the Mother struggling to hold things together in her life. It also won the Tony for Best New Score and Orchestrations.
If you like a show that delivers much more than song and dance entertainment then check out this show. You won’t be disappointed…I have seen it twice already and am looking forward to seeing it again.

THE THREE GENERATIONS

I remember well how my parents and grandparents were always telling us to save money. They then proceeded to tell us what life in the Depression was like. It was serious, I mean people being hungry. Then my generation the baby boomers kind of lived life on both sides: the Depression and the boom after the World War II. Then came the Yuppies where money was no object. I think we know that that is all over. There was a joke in the office because I refused to buy coffee from Starbucks. I used to pay 60 cents for a cup of coffee until Starbucks came along. I resented them because now we pay almost a dollar more because merchants saw people buying coffee at Starbucks. Over 600 Starbucks have closed down as people return to the corner coffee shop.

Applause has the same role in the ticket world. We are not Starbucks. We are the corner coffee shop selling the same tickets as the competition but at prices BELOW FACE VALUE(BFV). All of us are touched in someway or other by the economic situation. I apologize for bringing this up because I know so many people are out of work and have to worry where the next meal and the next mortgage payment come from. On the other hand, keeping Broadway going keeps millions of people employed. People come to New York City for Shopping, Sightseeing and Broadway Shows.

There are many people who do not have to worry about money and there are companies that service their needs. Our market are those who want to spend their money in the best way possible. When you are looking for a Broadway show, shop around. But PLEASE make sure you comparison shop and check Applause. Aside from the money saved, Applause promises you excellent service and a staff of Broadway experts. Let BFV become a motto for you when thinking about a Broadway show.

Go See "In The Heights" For the 4th of July! Lots of Fireworks!

What better time then the 4th of July weekend or the Summer to see In the Heights? Justina Machado has joined the production in the role of "Daniela" for 8 weeks only from this past Monday, June 29, through Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 West 46th Street).
Justina Machado is best known as Vanessa Diaz from the critically acclaimed "Six Feet Under."

As a neighborhood in Washington Heights prepares to celebrate the Fourth of July, a lottery win and various occurrences changes daily life.
This Tony Award Winner of Best New Musical of 2008 is a new sort of musical, with an old sort of heart.

The Mood of the Musical :

In the Heights focuses on the residents of a community of Washington Heights. As the events of a summer day unfold dreams are both diminished and determinedly realized.
The great strength of this show is the realistic feeling behind the individual characters and the collective community, and in this truth the audience is allowed a glimpse into the hearts and heads of a group of people and their hometown.
The production is not flawless. Parts of the plot seem rushed or slightly forced, and some of the musical numbers do not entirely hit the mark.
However, overall, it is a satisfying show with soul and spirit. Especially native New Yorkers will recognize something familiar and sincerely genuine about aspects of the show, and non-New Yorkers are treated to a show which exhibits a slither of daily neighborhood life and the combined sense of community and individuality behind it!

Applause Theatre Service has learned some exciting Broadway news today that the critically acclaimed Donmar Warehouse production of William Shakespeare's HAMLET with Jude Law in the title role, directed by Michael Grandage(Frost/Nixon), will come to Broadway this fall, following sold out runs in London's West End and a special engagement at Elsinore Castle in Denmark.

Law will be joined by the Donmar Theatre company of actors from London and Elsinore with further details to be announced later.

Award-winning actor Jude Law returns to Broadway for the first time since 1995 when he made his Tony Award-nominated debut in Jean Cocteau's Indiscretions (Les Parents Terribles). Applause Theater Service in New York City-A Middleman You Shouldn't Have to Live Without

Many people I know give me the distinct impression that going to see a Broadway Show is too expensive for them. But after speaking on the phone for a few minutes, my staff and I try to convey that Broadway doesn't necessarily need to cost you a fortune. Yes it is true that for the 5 or 6 shows that are "standing room only", one might have to pay a reasonable service charge to get some good seats. Still, the theater always has some seats in the mezzanine of the theater that are priced so the average consumer can well afford a seat. Take for instance the sold our productions of New York's Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot, Wicked, The Lion King, West Side Story and God of Carnage. These shows sell out all their inventory but still have some seats for around $100.00 to $120.00 each including ticket agency service charges.

For the other shows playing on Broadway, you might benefit from having Applause as your "middleman" to help assist you with tickets. Although the other shows might not "sell out" all the time, a company like Applause, that knows the "ins and outs" of what's happening on Broadway-will most likely be able to assist you with securing great seats for top shows, and at cheaper prices than anyone can help get for you.

Checkout Applause's BFV ticket deals. BFV stands for Below Face Value. Simply put, give us a call at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 seven days a week and ask for a current list of BFV ticket deal shows. Not only will we get you top priced seats but we will sell them to you for a price under what the regular printed price is on the ticket of admission.

Here's a list of 17 current Below Face Value Shows. They are:
39 Steps
9 to 5 The Musical
Avenue Q
Blithe Spirit
Chicago
Hair
In The Heights
Little Mermaid
Mamma Mia!
Mary Poppins
Mary Stuart
Next to Normal
Rock of Ages
Shrek The Musical
The Norman Conquests
The Phantom of the Opera
Waiting for Godot
I hope this information was helpful to you. If we can be of service, you can call us in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 seven days a week.

"Wicked" Asks the Question To What End? The Purpose of Our Relationships!

I love the Broadway musical Wicked. For those readers unfamiliar with the story, it is based on the best-selling novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory McGuire which runs parallel to the classic novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Their friendship causes them to face their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government and ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a back-story.

Wicked will be running here on Broadway for the next 50 or so years and on tour in the Phoenix metro area at Tempe’s Gammage Auditorium throughout the month of July, 2009. It also continues to be a huge hit in London and around the world. Find out if Wicked is coming to your area and check this musical out by calling me here at Applause. In the meantime, I wanted to share the lyrics to a song from Wicked. The song is sung between Elphaba and Glinda, just before the finale.

Watch a video of Kristin Chenoweth singing this song in concert. Gorgeous!

For Good

(Elphaba) I’m limited
Just look at me – I’m limited.
And just look at you
You can do all I couldn’t do, Glinda.
So now it’s up to you
For both of us – now it’s up to you…

(Glinda) I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
Because I knew you

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
(Elphaba) It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend…

Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you

(Glinda)

Because I knew you
(Both) I have been changed for good

(Elphaba)And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the thing I’ve done you blame me for

(Glinda) But then, I guess we know
There’s blame to share
(Both) And none of it seems to matter anymore
(Glinda) Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood

(Elphaba)Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood

(Both)Who can say if I’ve been
Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
Changed for the better
(Glinda)And because I knew you…
(Elphaba) Because I knew you…

(Both)Because I knew you…
I have been changed for good.

This song has inspired me at a time when I have been feeling challenged by my relationships. Some of my relationships seem static and difficult. I have begun to wonder if it would be in the best interest of both of us to move along.

Jersey Boys on Broadway in the Summer of 2009

I got to see Jersey Boys with some complimentary tickets the producer gave my company when the show first started preview performances on October 4, 2005. I remember sitting in the first row center thinking if I were sitting any closer, they'd have to give me a part in the show. All kidding aside friends, I have seen lots of Broadway theater in my days selling tickets at Applause Theater Service but Jersey Boys is truly one of the greatest of all time. Why you might ask?

The story is a simple one really. It tells the story of a small group of New Jersey friends who mostly get into trouble time after time with the local law enforcement officials. The story is told by each member of a popular 60's and 70's rock n' roll band by the name of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

Jersey Boys was the winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical and has sold out mostly every Broadway performance it has played. Jersey Boys recently opened in Las Vegas as well, doing big business at the box office. I went to see it when I was last out in Las Vegas just to witness how they handle their production as I had heard many theatrical productions often make the show less running time out there. Maybe it was a few minutes shorter but mostly the Las Vegas production stayed true to the Broadway version. It was very entertaining as well.

Some of the top songs you'll know if you liked music of the 60's and 70's are "Can't Take My Eyes off of You", "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Fallen Angel". You'll feel like you are at a concert where 30 songs that you'll recall will be played in a concert format along with a very interesting narration by the members of the band. The show is directed by Des McAnuff who does an outstanding job making you feel like you are aware of everything going on around you every step of the way during the career of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

Although the Jersey Boys production in New York City has been a tough ticket to get since it started playing, the shows advance sales seems to be slowing down a little (they all do). What this means is that obtaining tickets is becoming somewhat easier.

There are many ticket agencies that would lead you to believe that Jersey Boys tickets should cost you allot of money. But I would caution you to shop, take your time and simply compare seat locations and ticket prices. If you need some help, my staff at Applause Theater Service in New York City would be pleased to help you.

If your plans include seeing additional shows, check out our up-to-date Broadway Show listing and our Below Face Value listing of tickets to shows we can save you lots of money for.

We are open seven days a week and can be reached at 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930. We love our customers and love talking about all the Broadway Shows. Restaurants too have become a big part of what we do, suggesting out-of-towners consider frequenting the local dining spots that we ourselves go to before the theater. Give us a call and ask for a few restaurant names and phone numbers, you'll be glad you did, I promise you.

Let us hear from you if you need help with Broadway tickets.

MARY POPPINS

I was almost 20 years old when the movie Mary Poppins was released. It was a great hit but received more notoriety because Julie Andrews won the Oscar as Best Actress and beat Audrey Hepburn who took Julie Andrews' role in My Fair Lady, who was also up for am academy award for Best Actress..

Mary Poppins was fantastic as a movie and it is even more fantastic as a Broadway Musical. I guess I started to appreciate it when Disney invited us to see previews of Mary Poppins. They had a full symphony orchestra play the music from Mary Poppins as a Classical Piece. It was then that it really struck me how spectacular the music to Mary Poppins is.
One of the advantages of Mary Poppins is that it has appeal for both adults and children. We have sold an incredible amount of tickets for Mary Poppins and have never had anyone tell us that they didn't like the show.

As I think about the setting, the music, the choreography, the acting, the voices and the special effects, it seems almost impossible to not like Mary Poppins. If you need to take someone to a Broadway show or if you would like to take someone to a Broadway show, Mary Poppins is ideal, no matter what age even a teenage boy (who will never admit he liked it). I wouldn't advise it for a Bachelor Party, however. But jokes aside, this version of Mary Poppins has an adult storyline as well as a Children's fairyland.

Another bonus is that Mary Poppins is one of the shows on Applause's BFV program. Prices are BELOW FACE VALUE. This is a real help these days where so many of us are under economic pressure. If we would like to do something special for ourselves and or for our family and friends without breaking the bank, Mary Poppins would be an excellent choice. A great show and BFV prices. Would love to have your feedback.

The Little Mermaid on Broadway- a 2009 Summer Spectacle

I've seen most of the Broadway Shows playing in New York City but the one I often think of to suggest to families visiting The Big Apple is Disney's The Little Mermaid. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, a famous Danish author and poet, The little Mermaid tells the interesting story of a young mermaid who wants to give up her life "under the sea" in exchange for the one she often dreams of- a human life above the ocean. A life where a mermaid by the name of Ariel, longs for the love a human prince.
The Little Mermaid is Disney on Broadway's latest Broadway creation adapted from the 1989 animated film by The Walt Disney Company. The Broadway production opened on Broadway on January 10, 2008. Although many theater-goers seem to think that the stage production of The Little Mermaid is primarily for younger kids and teenagers, I have to say that after seeing the show several times myself, it is every bit as worthy of seeing for adults as so many of the other popular Broadway Shows playing this year.

The Little Mermaid has gorgeous music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with a few new songs co-written by Mr. Menken and Glenn Slater. The scenic design is by George Tyspin with amazing costume design by Tatiana Noginova and a book by Doug Wright. The current stars of The Little Mermaid are Chelsea Morgan Stock (as Ariel), Faith Prince (as Ursula), Drew Seeley (as Prince Eric) and Norm Lewis (as King Triton).

Right now our theater ticket agency called Applause Theater Service (license #71AP001029) has special insider discount ticket deals through the entire summer of 2009. We call it the BFV ticket deal. See South Pacific this Summer

In the hot days of summer what could be better than to see a show set in the tropics of the South Pacific?

South Pacific is considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. In 1949 a leading theatre critic told the show’s original star Mary Martin after her first performance “Don’t take this show to New York”. To which she replied “WHY?” and was responded with “It’s too good for them”. Well not only did they take it to New York, but it opened to rave reviews, 10 Tony nominations (it won all 10) and ran for over 5 years. It might have been too good for New Yorkers but they sure knew how to embrace it. Now some 50 years later it reopened once again in New York to rave reviews and many awards. With 11 Tony nominations, and 7 wins including Best Revival it once again proves it is one of America’s favorite musicals of all time.
Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific has music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples -- US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat -- and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices.
There are many reasons to see this show. It happens to be one of the most beautiful shows visually I have ever seen on Broadway. Most of the show looks just like a postcard from the South Pacific. But another reason is that for a limited time you have the opportunity to see the delightful Laura Osnes. This is Laura’s second Broadway show after winning the role of Sandy in Grease on America’s YOURE THE ONE THAT I WANT. This pretty young engenue stands strong in the shoes of the show’s original Nellie, Kelli O’Hara.
Many great seats are still available for performances this summer. Call Applause to check out prices and seats available.
See this show now!…you don’t want to have to wait 50 more years before it appears on Broadway again.

What? "The Nutty Professor" Musical Coming to Broadway? Sure is!!

I'm a Jerry Lewis nut! And this news couldn't be a more pleasant surprise. I idolize this great comedian and can't wait to see this new musical! Legendary actor, director, writer and producer Jerry Lewis will make his theatrical directorial debut on Broadway with the new musical, "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR", based on the 1963 film that he starred in and co-wrote. With music by Academy Award, Emmy Award, Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Marvin Hamlisch and a book and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner and Grammy Nominee Rupert Holmes, the musical is aiming for a bow on Broadway in the 2010/2011 season and is being produced by Loud Watch Productions, LLC.Recognized as one of The American Film Institutes best comedies in their "100 Years...100 Laughs", "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR", written by Jerry Lewis & Bill Richmond, was released by Paramount Pictures in 1963 and just recently crossed the 800 Million Dollar mark in world-wide grosses. The film also starred Lewis in what went on to be one of his most famous roles and successful films. Since its release, there have been countless tributes and homage to the film and Lewis' performance, not only in the US, but in Europe, Asia, Australia and across the globe.

"I was born with show business in my blood and working on Broadway gets it coursing through my veins like no other place can. Marvin and Rupert have given one of my favorite and most enduring films "THE NUTTY PROFESSOR" a hilarious and gorgeous adaptation for Broadway and I could not be happier. Does this story sing and dance? You bet it does," says Jerry Lewis.

Professor Julius Kelp is a dull geek with a bright idea. Privately experimenting in his laboratory to find the cure for his social failures, he creates a potion that transforms him into a smooth talking, party animal named Buddy Love. Buddy is everything that Julius always dreamed of being and gets the girl that he always dreamed of dating, Stella. The only problem is that the potion doesn't last very long. Will the school find out his secret and will Stella stick around even after Love has left the building?

Marvin Hamlisch states, "Music is truly an international language and it has the ability to bring people together like nothing else...except comedy. It's a thrill to be working with Jerry Lewis, a true king of comedy, and bringing this classic story to life on Broadway with music."

"Jerry Lewis has been my hero from boyhood, not only as one of the most gifted entertainers of all time but also as one of the grand masters of movie-making. To work with Jerry and the vivid cast of characters he created is a privilege and thrill beyond measure," says Rupert Holmes.

Amy Spanger Exits Rock of Ages

It constantly amazes me how fast news changes in this business. Case in point. I was halfway thru a blog about Amy Spanger returning to Rock of Ages tonight when my co-worker informed me that in fact she was not returning tonight but instead leaving the show for good. Now I personally don't know the reason for Ms. Spanger's departure. According to a representative of the production it was for personal reasons. It was also reported that she had been absent from the show since June 8 due to vocal rest. I myself hope that she is o.k. and that this talented performer will be back on the boards in the near future. She truly is one of a kind. Best of luck Amy!

Phantom of the Opera Still going Strong on Broadway

Is it possible that The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway is still one of the most popular shows ever? You bet it is my friends. I've been selling theater tickets for 31 years now and cannot believe how many times my customers go to see this show over and over again.

The Phantom of the Opera won 7 Tony Awards in 1988, which was the year my partner and friend Bill Stolting and I opened are little ticket agency in The Big Apple. The Phantom of the Opera won the much coveted Best Musical Tony Award that year as well thanks to the brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's gorgeous music with lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart.

Still selling thousands of tickets every week, The Phantom of the Opera tells the mysterious story of Christine Daae, a beautiful young opera soprano and the disfigured musical genius that falls in love with her. His goal is to make Christine the new star of the Paris Opera as he exercises a reign of terror over everyone in his path. The setting is the Paris Opera House in the early 1900's. Originally not a very strong selling novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera was made into a movie in 1925 and then a musical in 1986 appearing in London prior to its Broadway run.

The Phantom of the Opera is still "fresh" when you consider it has been playing on Broadway for over 20 years now. Howard McGillin stars as the current Phantom having played the role for more than 2000 performances and Jennifer Hope Wills plays the role of Christine. Ms. Wills is best known for co-starring with Brooke Shields in the most recent revival of A Wonderful Town a few years back on Broadway.

I have seen The Phantom of the Opera several times in New York and it is one of the better Broadway shows, particularly if you don't get the opportunity to see much theater. Right now our company has special access to amazing orchestra and front mezzanine seats at prices that are Below Face Value. BFV is simply a way our customers can gain access to The Phantom of the Opera and several other popular Broadway Shows at prices that are less than the regular printed price on the tickets.

So if you think you might want to buy yourself some tickets to The Phantom of the Opera at prices, consider calling Applause Theater Service in New York City a call. Remember to ask for the BFV ticket deal and tell them The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. You'll be so glad you did.

9 To 5 The Musical Is A Laugh Riot

Forget what the critics say. 9 to 5 The Musical is a lot of fun. I loved it.Is it one of those shows that will change your life? Probably not. Who cares. Every once in a while it is nice to go to show and just laugh and have a good time. After all isn't that what theatre is supposed to be about. Now don't get me wrong. I love serious shows like Next To Normal and Hair. They belong on Broadway just as much as the silly shows like Shrek and Avenue Q. That's what makes Broadway great. There is something for everybody. So if you are looking for a fun night in the theatre than I strongly suggest you get your tickets to see 9 to 5 The Musical on Broadway. I mean a show with a score by Dolly Parton can't be all bad right?

Billy Elliot Helping to Keep Broadway Theater Stronger Than Ever in 2009

It's been 3 weeks since the 2009 Tony Awards aired. Those of us in the ticket selling end of the Broadway theater business usually know which shows are going to become the "sold-out" mainstays for the next several years or so after the winners are announced. Although this past season on Broadway was much more exciting than in the last few years, it appears that ticket sales for 10 Tony Award winner Billy Elliot The Musical are starting to take off.

Billy Elliot The Musical is a terrific story based on the October 2000 release of the motion picture film called Billy Elliot. The film broke several box office records of the past, being nominated for 3 Golden Globes, 3 Oscars and 13 Baftas. The story follows the dreams and aspirations of a young boy from Northern England and his quest to become a ballet dancer. It takes place in the 1980's against the backdrop of turbulent times during a life threatening coal-miners strike in the Maggie Thatcher era.

There are 4 actors that alternate in the role of Billy Elliot. They all do a marvelous job as the show involves lots of dancing. Billy Elliot has won 10 Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Musical. Elton John wrote the music and book and lyrics are by Lee Hall. Stephen Daldry does a wonderful job directing Billy Elliot. The show has been a hit in London and is sure to play on Broadway for many years to come. In time, I am sure Billy Elliot will start to play to audiences around the United States as well. It's truly a great story of triumph over adversity.

Even as the recession was beginning to affect employment and consumer's spending habits in New York City during the earlier part of this year, sales for tickets to Billy Elliot The Musical were over 90 % occupancy. The recessionary times, at least in our city, seem to be lessening their hold on going to Broadway Shows, eating out and shopping. My opinion as someone who lives in New York City, is that Billy Elliot along with some help from a new crop of popular shows like West Side Story's revival, Hair The Musical's revival, God of Carnage and Next to Normal is that Broadway might emerge from these times as stronger than ever.

When you think about it, Billy Elliot's theme of difficult economic times, jobs being outsourced and unions having to renegotiate their terms and the dreams of young people making their own way in life, not simply doing exactly what their parents want them to-all directly correlate to the message in Billy Elliot The Musical. There are many lessons to be learned by young and older alike from this musical.

Although Broadway theater was holding up very well during the recession, I think Billy Elliot The Musical has brought about a very positive effect on Broadway in general. Right after the Tony Awards aired earlier this month, several shows started selling at a much faster pace at our company. We really feel that Billy Elliot is stirring up lots of excitement on Broadway. For itself and for many other shows as well.

I hope this information was helpful to you. And if you think Billy Elliot is a show that you would like to see, simply call me personally at Applause Theater Service in New York City to obtain tickets to one of the finest shows I have ever seen in my lifetime. My phone number is 212-307-7050 in New York City or toll free at 800-451-9930. Just ask for the Broadway Ticket Man.

If you think you may want to "take in" some other top Broadway theater, I suggest you have a look at our latest promotion called Below Face Value. BFV is Applause's ongoing campaign to bring about the best prices to the theater-going public. BFV is the "insider's" guide to buying tickets for several Broadway shows at below the regular printed price usually that appears on the tickets.

Chicago The Musical on Broadway

Come this November 14, 2009, the revival of Chicago The Musical will turn 13 years old. And "lucky 13" it is for sure.

Chicago is one of those shows that pleases its audiences from beginning to end. And the producers of Chicago do an awesome job of constantly changing the lead cast members, often to recognizable movie actors and Broadway regulars so that they can keep the show "fresh". Chicago The Musical tells the story of corruption in the criminal justice system in prohibition Chicago through satire. Chicago The Musical is based on a 1926 play by news reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins who wrote stories on real criminals and the crimes they committed. Although the original Broadway production of Chicago played for 936 performances starting in 1975, the current revival has played over 5000 performances. Quite a feat I would say when you consider how many shows open and close in the same year on Broadway.

Right now Tom Hewitt plays the role of Billy Flynn. Mr. Hewitt is best known for his lead role in The Rocky Horror Show, for which he earned Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations some years back. Chandra Wilson plays the role of Matron Mama Morton. Chandra is best known for her leading role on television's Grey's Anatomy for which she earned an Emmy nomination as Dr. Miranda Bailey. Rounding out the cast are Bonnie Langford (as Roxie Hart), Amra-Faye Wright, Toms Riis Farrell and R. Lowe. The shows creators are Broadway favorites John Kander and Fred Ebb, who wrote the music and lyrics with a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb. Direction of Chicago is by Walter Bobbie with choreography by Ann Reinking. Ms. Reinking was the star of Dancin' nearly 30 years ago, made famous by Mr. Fosse's unique dance routines specifically designed for the Broadway stage.

I've been in the Broadway ticket selling business all of my adult life and sold tickets to a few thousand shows. Many of them were terrific shows to see but if you want to see one of the more popular Broadway Shows in the history of New York theater, you might want to consider buying yourself some tickets to this great old-fashioned Broadway show. Right now, Applause Theater Service (New York State license #71Ap1001029), our little Broadway ticket agency operating in New York for 21 years now, has specially priced tickets to see Chicago The Musical. And at prices that are Below Face Value. What this means is that we can obtain the best seats in the orchestra or front mezzanine of the theater for less then the regular printed price on the Chicago ticket.

There are hundreds of companies that sell Broadway tickets on the Internet. Simply do your shopping then consider a call to Applause in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. Remember to tell them the Broadway Ticket Man sent you and ask for your BFV ticket deal also. The money you will save will be more than enough to pay for some nice meals before the theater.

I hope you think this advice is helpful and that you will call Applause if you have questions about Chicago The Musical or about any of the other fabulous Broadway Shows playing right now.

Avenue Q To Close On September 13

This is truly a sad day. One of my favorite shows and one of Broadway's most unexpected hits in recent years is saying goodbye. I am of course talking about the 2004 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Avenue Q. When it closes it will have played 33 previews and 2,534 performances. Not too bad for a show that most people thought would barely last a couple of years.
I've had the pleasure of seeing this hilarious show over the years and I can't believe it will no longer be around. The show was the first Broadway show my parents ever saw and they loved it. In fact they still talk about the show to this day and it's been over five years. I guess it made a lasting impression. If you haven't seen Avenue Q yet than you don't know what you are missing. You have got to see it before it is too late. For those of you lucky people like me who loved the show then I think it's time to check it out again. Maybe if tickets sales increase it will encourage the producers of the show to keep it around a little longer. It worked with Rent. Maybe it will this time too.

Initial Casting Has Been Announced for the New Musical Spider-Man on Broadway! Tix Now on Sale with Applause!

Initial casting has been announced for the new musical Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, which will now begin previews at Broadway's Hilton Theatre Feb. 25, 2010, more than a month later than originally reported (Jan. 16, 2010). A new opening date will be announced shortly. Tickets are on sale now with Applause!

Evan Rachel Wood(The Wrestler, Running with Scissors, Across the Universe) will play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's girlfriend, and Tony winner Alan Cumming(Cabaret, X-Men) will star as Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin), Spider-Man's most notorious nemesis.

The Lion King's Julie Taymor directs.

About the casting of Wood and Cumming, Taymor said in a statement, "'Across The Universe' was my first opportunity to work with Evan Rachel Wood — and it was a sublime experience. Evan is unique: she is a young actress with incredible depth for both serious and comic drama in films and theater, and on top of that, she has an extraordinary lyrical voice. We are thrilled to have her as our Mary Jane. . . . I obviously love him as this is my third collaboration with Alan – and finally we get to do it on stage. He has such range and such charisma as a performer that I feel confident his Green Goblin will bring many surprises that will move and entertain us."

Drawings from over 40 years of Marvel comic books, Spider-Man, according to press notes, "spins a new take on the mythic tale of a young man propelled from a modest rowhouse in Queens to the sky-scraping spire of the Chrysler Building, the bustling offices of the Daily Bugle, through the dizzying canyons of Manhattan, to new vistas never before seen. The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down — literally — when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek — suddenly endowed with astonishing powers — soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Spider-Man's battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected — yielding new characters as well as familiar faces — until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero's journey." Additional casting will be announced at a later time.
