Release Your Inner Dancing Queen.....

I have to tell you I frequently find myself singing or humming the music from Mamma Mia. I have seen the show a few time and loved it each time! Mamma Mia takes the hit songs by the Swedish supergroup ABBA and shapes them around the story of a single mother dealing with her young daughter's upcoming marriage on a picturesque Greek isle. While the daughter plans her future with the love of her life, her mother is haunted by three different men who may or may not be her daughter's father. Among the songs are such familiar '70s staples as “Dancing Queen,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “S.O.S.,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “The Winner Takes It All.” So if you have not seen this show I recommend you do. It will make you your own Dancing Queen or King for that matter. Don't delay call Applause today!!!! For the best seats at the best prices.

Billy Elliot-Broadway's Biggest Winner

Winner of 10 2009 Tony Awards is Billy Elliot The Musical. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Musical has been packing them in at the Imperial Theatre since it first opened to rave reviews last fall. I have not seen the show. In fact I am the only one in my office who hasn't seen it. To be honest the show doesn't really interest me. However I am in the minority. I have yet to hear from one person that did not love the show. Billy Elliot is still one of the most popular shows in London as well and should continue to run for many years both on Broadway and everywhere in between. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Billy Elliot The Musical.

Avenue Q Celebrates Six Years On The Great White Way

Has it really been six years since Avenue Q opened on Broadway? I remember the first time I saw it in previews and laughed my A** off. Since then I have seen the show several times and it still manages to crack me up every time I see it. The show which has played over 2,500 performances will celebrate it's 6th Anniversary tonight at the John Golden Theatre. Avenue Q is one of my favorite shows and I was so sad to hear that it will be closing on September 13. Hopefully I will get the chance to see it one more time. Six years is a major accomplishment and the creators and the producers of the show should be very proud. No one thought the show would make it this long let alone beat Wicked for the Tony Award but it did. Congratulations Avenue Q and may you continue to have success around the world for many years to come.

That's right theatre fans. One of Hollywood's most popular stars is set to make his return to Broadway this fall. Jude Law who was last seen treading the boards in 1995 will begin performances at the Broadhurst Theatre on September 12 in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Mr. Law who is currently playing the title role at London's Wyndham Theatre received critical acclaim for his portrayal. This strictly limited engagement will conclude it's run on December 6. "Wicked" the Movie? Could Be, But First You Must See the Show!

Those crazy bloggers out there are starting up some wild rumors again. They're reporting that Joel Grey the original Wizard of Oz in "Wicked" on Broadway, whose out doing publicity for his new book, said in an interview that he's been approached about doing the movie version. Well if it's true than that's exciting news indeed!

I would love to see all the original cast members come back and do it but I'm certain that won't happen in today's world. They'll try to get some big name stars to drawer bigger business. Some have even said that Liza Minelli would play Madame Morrible which would reunite her with Joel Grey(they both won Oscars for the movie of Cabaret!). Again, will never happen I'm sure. My bet is on Meryl Streep to play Madame Morrible, Perfect!

Anyway this is one of my all time favorite musicals and I've seen it multiple times. You don't know what you're missing if you haven't yet seen this brilliant totally entertaining musical extravaganza! Go! Now's the best time!

You Need to See "9 to 5 the Musical" on Broadway and Help it Stick Around for Awhile!

I'm saddened with all these blogs and rumors saying that if Dolly Parton's "9 to 5 the Musical" doesn't start selling well, it may be gone by Labor Day! It unfortunately has been on a steady decline in sales and that's not good for a new musical. I think it's wonderful and has a great cast with great songs! It's really a first rate production!

Rumor has it that "White Christmas", which is returning this lucrative holiday season and played the Marquis where 9 to 5 currently resides last season, is looking to get back in there come November! Also the new musical "Catch Me if You Can" now playing in Seattle is looking to play there this Spring after White Christmas!

I say no! Find other theaters!! This show is pleasing audiences nightly and word of mouth should help this show stick around for awhile. Support it, go see it! You have a great time!

"Shrek the Musical" Going Strong On Broadway! It's a Must See!

I loved Shrek the movie very, very much. I laughed my butt off! An animated feature film for adults more than children. I didn't think that they could pull it off on the Broadway stage with Shrek the Musical, but they did. In fact I think it's better than the film in many ways. You certainly feel more for the characters on stage than in the film. You really become part of this fairytale world.

The actors couldn't be any better. The songs are wonderful. And the sets are just amazing. I can't wait to see this show again and recommend that you get your tickets now to see this magical evening of theatre bliss!

Dinner and A Broadway Show Anyone?

Almost every one of our customers that buys tickets for a Broadway Show will have dinner before the show. Did you know that most people make reservations at restaurants that are in close proximity to the Broadway Theater District? This is done so as to not be late when the curtain rises I'm sure.

With this in mind, I'd like to call your attention to a much sought after service our company Applause Theater Service offers to our ticket buying customers. It's a simple one really. We simply suggest places to dine at before your Broadway Show.

We eat out all the time before the theater not to mention just about every night of the week as most of us live in the heart of New York City. So don't be shy friends, if you'd like a suggestion or two, simply call us on our toll free number at 800-451-9930 or locally in New York City at 212-307-7050, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

You can check out the following link for Applause staff restaurant suggestions or try Restaurant Row, one of my personal favorite "block long" list of amazing eateries right in the Broadway Theater District. Whether you buy your Broadway Show tickets from Applause or somewhere else, I promise you that you'll find something right up your alley with regard to restaurant picks. Good luck.

We hope to hear from you if you need a hand with securing tickets for Broadway Shows or simply have a question about dining or New York City in general.

Take care now.

Broadway's Secret Ticket Deals

Broadway Theater is doing very well during this economic recession. My colleague Jay, our resident "theater know it all" (that's know it all in a great way of course), says that 13 Broadway Shows sold over 1 million dollars in weekly ticket sales last week in New York City. I've been in Broadway ticket sales my entire career and am pretty sure this has never happened before. So although many of the travel and entertainment industries various companies are hurting these days, I see that the average person who is still gainfully employed, looks like they still will be traveling this year. And as I study the Broadway ticket sales statistics every Monday when they appear in our weekly trade newspapers, my feeling is that Broadway Theater will continue to thrive into the days ahead.

One of the things that Broadway has learned to do well is to "fill up the theaters" when a performance or two looks like it will be somewhat empty. Broadway Show producers have been inclined to offer "special rates" during off peak times so that they can offset an empty seat with some revenue that will bring them somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4 of what a regular ticket of admission would bring them.

If you are interested in seeing one or more of Broadway's amazing live entertainment shows, now is a great time to contact my company Applause Theater Service. Applause is a New York State licensed (NY State license #71AP1001029) ticket agency that offers their very own BFV ticket deals promotion for Broadway theater. Based on reduced prices to some of these shows I previously mentioned, Applause's BFV stands for Below Face Value. BFV will get you into top Broadway Shows at reduced prices. Very simply put, you will get to talk to a live ticket agent from Applause, be offered top priced seats in the orchestra or front mezzanine, we then add on a small service charge and you get the best seats for less than the usual suggested retail price printed on the ticket. This is no "come on". It's the real thing. Our goal is to get people the very best seats for the best shows at the very best prices.

You can check out what many other satisfied customers of Applause say about our service. Just click here.

If you take a moment to call us in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week, you have my promise that you will be treated extremely well. So when you get a moment, please call. Ask anything you want about any of the Broadway Shows. I guarantee you, we will make you smile with our friendly service and knowledge of everything on Broadway, especially the BFV ticket deals. Talk with you soon.

Go See a Disney Show on Broadway!

Disney took Broadway by storm with Beauty and the Beast and then The Lion King which is still running 10 plus years. They know how to do it! Families return to see their shows over and over again. Lion King needs no description. It's one of the best shows ever produced on Broadway.

Unfortunately one of them is closing, the classic The Little Mermaid. So if you haven't seen it, GO! Take the whole clan and enjoy a magical evening of theatre.

Mary Poppins has been running a few years now and plays at their flagship theatre the New Amsterdam. One of the most beautiful theatres you'll ever see. It's remarkable what they've done to this run down old house. Mary is a spectacular show with classic music that we all know. Another definite must see! I've seen them multiple times and could go back again and again and never get bored. You just sit there in amazement.

And if you call now, some great deals are available with Applause Theatre Service! Tickets for this show and all Broadway shows(including London productions) can be purchased by calling a sales expert live at 800-451-9930. Ask for the Below Face Value Deals for most Broadway shows this Summer!!

Jersey Boy's-Broadway's Most Popular JukeBox Musical

It's funny but Jersey Boys had been running for almost two years before I finally saw it on Broadway. Now the reason I waited so long was not because I didn't want to see it but because I couldn't get a ticket. Being in the business I am in we often get tickets to see all the shows for free but I was out of town the week we got tickets to see Jersey Boys. Therefore I figured I had missed my chance after the show opened to rave reviews across the board.

Finally I got my opportunity to see the show but to be honest I did have my doubts. I avoided The Producers the entire time it was here because I truly believed that nothing could live up to that much hype and Jersey Boys seemed to have just as much if not more. In the end I figured that if I didn't like it I could always leave at intermission. I am so glad that I went. What an amazing night in the theatre. From the very beginning I felt like I was at a Frankie Valli concert. Growing up I knew of their music but never realized how much they had to struggle and the hardships they had to face in order to achieve their dreams. It really was inspiring and being a composer myself very enlightening.

Now while the show still tends to sell out every night that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. We here at Applause have tickets for every performance and not just Broadway either. We can get you tickets to see Jersey Boys in London or anywhere it plays Nationwide. Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys. Oh what a night indeed!"

South Pacifc Still Packing Them In On Broadway

When they first announced two years ago that South Pacific was coming back to Broadway I was so excited. It is one of my favorite Rodger and Hammerstein shows and I will always have fond memories of doing the show in high school and Community Theatre(I played Stewpot and understudied Emile De Becque in case you care.)Anyway back to the Broadway production of South Pacific. The new revival marks the first time it is back on Broadway since the original 1949 production. Wow! Has it really been 50 years? This version produced by Lincoln Center won 7 2008 Tony Awards including Best Revival. Now in it's 2nd sold out year it continues to delight audiences of all ages eight times a week at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre and should continue to do so for many years to come. That don't make shows like this anymore so I highly recommend you see South Pacific if you get the chance. As my coworker Erik likes to say, "It will give you goosebumps!"

West Side Story-Broadway Goes Bilingual

Some of you may have heard that the new revival of West Side Story is in Spanish. Now don't worry. The whole show is not in Spanish. Just a few songs and some dialogue. Now having seen the movie many times over the years I knew all the songs going in so it really didn't phase me. Now for those of you who think that they will be lost I have good news for you. The English lyrics are printed in the program so if you have any doubt as to what the heck they are saying then you are good. The dialogue is minimal and you can pretty much figure out what they are saying by their body language and facial expressions. It amazes me that so may people seem to be turned off when they hear that some of the show is in Spanish. Personally I think it adds another layer to the show and makes it even more powerful. It does not and should not keep you from enjoying this stunning production of one of Broadway's most beloved musicals.

Customer Story

April 3,2004. My first day at Applause. Over the past five years I've seen a lot of shows. Some good. Some bad. I've also talked to hundreds of customers on the phone. Some good. Some bad. Just kidding. To be honest most of the calls we get are from some very nice people who just like us love and support the theatre. Anyway the reason for today's blog is to talk about a customer who called the other day. It was a typical day like any other. People calling to inquire about Wicked and Billy Elliot tickets.(Our two biggest sellers)When out of nowhere I got a call from a very nice lady who was looking for a show to take her daughter to for her Birthday that they both would enjoy but not cost an arm and a leg.

I asked her if she had seen a lot of shows and she said that she used to come to New York with her husband but since he passed away a few years ago she just didn't feel up to making the big trip by herself. Finally her daughter who had never been suggested that it was time to go again and what better way to spend her Birthday then with a trip to New York. The first show I suggested was Mamma Mia. Believe it or not they had seen the movie and hated it. That's a first for me. My next suggestion was Wicked but they had actually seen it in Chicago last year. Then I thought how about The Marvelous Wonderettes? Here is a brief synopsis of the show.

"The Marvelous Wonderettes is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop musical blast from the past! Featuring your favorite songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s ("Mr. Sandman," "Stupid Cupid," "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," "Heatwave," and many, many more!), The Marvelous Wonderettes takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes – Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match!"

So after telling them a brief description about the show and the fact that everyone in my office loved it, they knew it was the show for them. Not only that but I told them that I could get them great seats at at a discount. Well, that just made her day. Before wrapping up I asked her if she needed any restaurant recommendations and I was able to suggest over ten restaurant's that her and her daughter might like. It's calls like these that make me love what I do.

Phantom of the Opera Is Still Going Strong

It's hard to believe that it has been twenty-two years since The Phantom of the Opera opened on Broadway. A lot of shows have come and gone since that time but Phantom is still here playing to packed houses eight times a week at Broadway's Majestic Theatre. The cast recording which has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a kid growing up in Illinois is still one of Broadway's most popular shows. In fact to this day it is still one of our most requested day in and day out. My first and only time seeing the show was over sixteen years ago and I thought it was outstanding. Maybe it's time I see it again? Get your tickets to see The Phantom of the Opera. Broadway's longest running show.

Get Your Tickets To See West Side Story On Broadway

Still haven't seen West Side Story yet? Well don't worry because based on the boffo business it is doing every week you can expect it to be around for a very long time. The show which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival received glowing reviews in Washington D.C. prior to it's Broadway run which began this past March. I'll admit I had very mixed feelings about the show. As far as the music goes it sounded as good as I have ever heard it. Now while some of the performances weren't as strong as they should have been all in all it was pretty good. Karen Olivo who plays Anita and won a much deserved Tony Award for her performance is worth the price of admission alone. Tickets are selling well but the good news is that Applause has availability for all dates. Call now and get your tickets to see West Side Story on Broadway. It is one of Broadway's most beloved musicals after all.

Celebrate The 60's-See Hair On Broadway

When Hair first premiered it changed the face of Broadway as we know it. Now over forty years later this production has breathed new life into this beloved musical and has set Broadway ablaze once again. The show which won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival is by far one of the most thrilling and exciting productions on the Great White Way and I expect it to be around for a very long time. Since it first opened this past Spring we have gotten hundreds of calls from people of all ages and all walks of life who are dying to see this show. Some of them saw the original production back in 1968 and now want to see if this new production is just as good as the first one. Others like myself who had never seen it want to see what all the fuss is about. You see I tend not to like the same things that most people do. This time the critics got it right. Hair is a revelation and just as relevant as it was in 1968. Times may have changed but the message of the show is just as powerful as it was back then. See Hair on Broadway.

Still Haven't Seen In The Heights? Call Applause Now

Now in it's 2nd year is In The Heights, the 2008 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. I was actually the last person in my office to see the show as everyone else had seen it and loved it when it first premiered Off-Broadway in the Summer of 2007. Based on their feedback and enthusiasm for the show I figured I would check it out. Of course by then it had closed. I guess I was doomed never to see it. Well before I knew it they announced they were coming to Broadway and I would now finally get to see what all the fuss was about. Six months later the show began previews and I got my tickets. Well all I can say is it was worth the wait. What an amazing show from start to finish. Not only have I seen the show several times but the cast recording is one of my favorites. I listen to it it at work at least two or three times a week. Luckily my co-workers like it too or we could have a revolt on our hands. Probably not but you never know. We tend to be a very opinionated bunch here at Applause. Anyway back to In The Heights. All I can say is go see it. It is a show that will touch your heart and put a smile on your face. Isn't that what Broadway is supposed to do after all? Call Applause now to get your tickets to see In The Heights on Broadway. It is a winner.

Next To Normal-Broadway's Most Emotional Show

Winner of 3 2009 Tony Awards is Next To Normal. The show which received outstanding notices from critics and audiences alike has been selling out nightly since it opened at the Booth Theatre this past Spring. Todd, who is a co-worker of mine has seen the show several times and thinks that it is one of the most touching and moving shows he has seen in a long time. I admit I was a bit skeptical about seeing the show when it was first announced but I am so glad that I went. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Score features an eclectic mix of Pop,Rock, and Country music. Being a composer myself I really enjoyed the mix of styles and am happy that a show like Next To Normal is finding success on Broadway. Now I know some people may find the subject matter a little depressing and perhaps too real at times. That's what makes it so different and if I dare say appealing. Real life is not perfect. We all know that. No one ever said it was. That's why we should embrace shows like Next To Normal. The future of Broadway is in your hands.

You're In For Some Enchanted Evening on Broadway By Seeing "South Pacific"

With a round of praise from the toughest of Broadway critics and a show that I knew would become a mega hit is easily one of my all time favorite musicals! The new revival of South Pacific is so enchanted and beautifully staged by director Bartlett Sher and the full-scale production at Lincoln Center Theatre has earned every accolade they were given, winner of seven 2008 Tony Awards . While in retrospect, given the considerable praise and excitement about this revival of Pacific, it seems like this revival was a sure thing, or not.

Of course, nothing could be further than the truth, and the fact that Lincoln Center was ready to again roll the dice in a large way, speaks to its ability to accomplish and risk things that commercial producers avoid. It is unlikely that a full orchestra and cast of 40 would be desirable for a commercial producer. Last season, Lincoln Center dared big on Tom Stoppard's Coast of Utopia. That paid off…for the most part. It won Tony's. This South Pacific Broadway revival also ran away with a bunch of awards as well. The real accomplishment is partly in the fact that it was produced on Broadway at all. The age, cast size, and physical scale of South Pacific make this musical a challenge. Once again, Lincoln Center has risen to the challenge, and not doubt the rewards will be great as well.

Dee Roscioli Soars To Broadway as the "Wicked" Witch of the West!

Well it looks like I have to make a return visit to see one of my all time favorite shows! Dee Roscioli assumes the role of Elphaba in the hit musical WICKED this week and I always like to see the different cast changes. I'm hearing great things about this gal!

Ms. Roscioli is making her Broadway debut after playing the role of Elphaba for the final two years of the record-breaking Chicago production of WICKED. Dee joins a cast which includes Alli Mauzey as Glinda, Tony Award-winner Rondi Reed(August Osage) as Madame Morrible, P.J. Benjamin as The Wizard, Kevin Kern as Fiyero, Alex Brightman as Boq, Cristy Candler as Nessarose, and Timothy Britten Parker as Dr. Dillamond.

In addition to her three years with the Chicago company of WICKED, Dee Roscioli has appeared as Grizabella in the national tour of Cats and in the NYSF Workshops of Dangerous Beauty and Behind the Limelight. She has sung for the governors of Arkansas and Kentucky and had the privilege of singing the national anthem for the Chicago Bears and White Sox.

Winner of 20 major awards including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, WICKED is the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Declared "A Cultural Phenomenon" by Variety, WICKED currently has productions in New York, San Francisco, London, Tokyo, Stuttgart, Melbourne and on two North American tours. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman. The production is directed by Joe Mantello(9 to 5 the Musical) with musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

Now is the Best Time to Catch the 2006 Best Musical Winner "Jersey Boys" on Broadway with Applause!

One of the most well-liked musicals to hit Broadway over the past few years is Jersey Boys. It is a superb show, and one that will entertain everybody. It is bright, happy and a large amount of fun. The music is fantastic - you could end up dancing in the aisles. Do what you can to get tickets at a great price with Applause so you do not miss out.

I couldn't wait to see Jersey Boys when it first came out in 2006 because I knew I liked the music, which is superb, and knew a little about the area it is set in and a bit about the Four Seasons. Those boys were an engaging bunch to say the least. Their private likenesses are likely more clear to most than their differences, but how they came together against amazing odds to become a music sensation is a really rather incredible story.

You will be thrilled by the telling of the story, which is done through an effective mixture of both spoken word and song, and plenty of hilarious jokes. I nicknamed it "Soprano's the Musical"! Lots of F bombs thrown out in the show, so you may want to be careful if you're thinking about taking the youngins! You can pick up some engaging trivia about the group, for example which current Hollywood star basically introduced two key members of the group or how “Sherry,” the group’s first massive hit came into being, and which very superstar galvanized the song “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” Lots of their songs and other popular songs of the era are performed by a very talented cast.

People return to see this show over and over again! Right now during the week you can get in to see the show at an amazing price! Run to see it. And if you call now, some great deals are available with Applause Theatre Service! Tickets for this show and all Broadway shows(including London productions) can be purchased by calling a sales expert live at 800-451-9930. 2009 Best Musical Winner "Billy Elliot" is a Must See!

I went to see the 2009 Tony Award Winning Best Musical Billy Elliot at the Imperial Theatre early in previews. The story follows the film version very closely but it had at least one scene that was completely new. It is about the teenage boy Billy, who is growing up together with his father and brother in the coal mining district in England during the Thatcher-era. It´s a rather political drama going on underneath the main theme that is about Billy and his awakening interest for dancing. By chance he happens to visit the local dance school when there is a rehearsal going on with the girls. The dance teacher however notices that he could have some talent for dancing and makes him come back and try dancing a bit more. His narrow-minded father thinks he is attending the boxing class instead. Some complications arise of course when the dance teacher wants Billy to go to an audition in London at the Royal Ballet School.

In this particular performance, the role of Billy was played by David Alvarez(pictured left), a young talent born to Cuban parents in 1994. He started ballet at the age of eight in Montreal and his family has lived in New York City since 2006, when he won a full scholarship to study classical ballet at the American Ballet Theatre´s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. With ABT, David has danced featured roles in “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Nutcracker”. He also studies piano on scholarship at the 92nd Street Y School of Music. In class, Alvarez is a sober, dedicated student, practicing his jumps on the sidelines when other groups take the floor. If he is lucky, he will eventually advance to ABT II, the junior troupe. If he is very lucky, he will end up in the main Company.
As Billy he floats through high leaps and multiple turns with a plumed softness and an innocent uprightness. “This”, the 14-year-old says of his exhilarating turn on Broadway, “is just for once-once in a lifetime.” Ballet he hopes will be forever.
I liked this show very much, and it´s wonderful to enjoy both very good dancing combined with good singing and acting at the same time. And Elton John's music ain't half bad either! It definitely gets the tears flowing and gives you the chilly bumps! Together it´s a great show for the eyes and heartstrings. David Alvarez is a dancing machine and I will most certainly be following his dancing career from now on.

It Would of Been Nice to Have Had the Original Cast of Avenue Q Close the Show!

I just read an article recently which interviewed Stephanie D'Abruzzo, the singing actress who was Tony-nominated for creating the roles of Kate Monster/Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q about the possibility of returning to close the show with the original cast which would have been wonderful. I mean lets face it, the originals with the exception of John Tartaglia(Shrek) aren't working steady at the moment. At least not with anything meaningful. I'm sure John could have gotten a months leave to close the show.

About whether she had thought about returning to the show for its closing weeks, the actress and puppeteer said, “There were rumors of reuniting the original cast to close the show, but apparently they turned out to be just that, rumors. I never heard anything directly". Shame on the producers! What a way to have gone out! Anyway Ann Harada is back in with other originals and the show should be seen if you haven't yet seen it. It's a laugh a minute. It’s staggering to think that the show opened an entire first-grader’s life ago. The show has had a great run — about six years longer than most people thought it would have had — and certainly this closing is hardly the end. I am sure that we’ll soon be seeing regional and college productions.

9 to 5 The Musical is Now Available on CD

I have to tell you that I really enjoyed the music in 9 to 5. Dolly really surprised me! Dolly Parton's Tony Award-nominated score for 9 To 5: The Musical was released on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 by DOLLY RECORDS.
The cast celebrated the big day with a performance and CD signing at Barnes & Noble Lincoln Center, New York City. Iconic singer, songwriter, musician and actress Dolly Parton debuted her new label, DOLLY RECORDS, with the release of "Better Get To Livin'" in September 2007, the first single from 2008's critically acclaimed top 10 CD Backwoods Barbie. The album's current hit single and video is "Backwoods Barbie." The Original Broadway Cast Recording of 9 To 5: The Musical is the label's second release.
Multiple Drama Desk and Tony Award nominated 9 To 5: The Musical stars four-time Emmy Award winner and two-time Tony Award nominee and recent Drama Desk winner Allison Janney, along with Stephanie J. Block, Megan Hilty, and three-time Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch. It opened Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Marriott Marquis Theatre (1535 Broadway). 9 To 5: The Musical marks the Broadway debut of seven-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and musician Dolly Parton as composer and lyricist. With direction by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello(Wicked) and choreography by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler(In the Heights), 9 To 5: The Musical has a book by Patricia Resnick, based on her original story and screenplay for the smash 1980 film comedy 9 To 5 starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly herself. And my personal favorite Dabney Coleman as Mr. Hart! Funny stuff!!

What? You still haven't seen Rock of Ages yet? Well what are you waiting for people? It's time to unleash your inner"Headbanger" and get yourself down to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre to see Rock of Ages on Broadway. The show which features twenty-eight classic hits from the 1980's takes place in The Bourbon Room, a bar/club on L.A.'s Sunset Strip and stars American Idol alum and Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis. Since it opened I have seen the show three times. Once Off-Broadway and twice on Broadway. The show is an absolute blast and I am so glad an unconventional show like this has found an audience on Broadway. Since the Tony Awards and it's amazing performance at the ceremony ticket sales have went up and the show is starting to sell out on a nightly basis. Now don't worry. You can still get tickets. How you ask? Just call Applause. It's that easy. So get your tickets to see Rock of Ages on Broadway. It's like going to a rock concert. Minus the pot of course.

Want to Feel Hot...Hot....Hot?

I don't know about you, but I am super excited for Burn The Floor to arrive here in New York. Burn The Floor is a spectacular blend of Latin and Ballroom dance first conceived as a special performance at Sir Elton John's 50th birthday celebration in 1997. It takes its audiences on a journey through the passionate drama of dance. The elegance of the Viennese Waltz, the exuberance of Jive, the intensity of the Paso Doble—audiences experience them all, as well as the Tango, Samba, Mambo, Quickstep and Swing. It's Ballroom dance with a sexy 21st century edge. It will be performed on Broadway for a limited engagement starting July 25, 2009. This is where it gets exciting for me....Special Guest Stars, through August 16, KARINA SMIRNOFF and MAKSIM CHMERKOVSKIY from Dancing with the Stars will be appearing through August 16th only. So if you’re a fan of So You Think You Dance, Dancing with the Stars, or America’s Best Dance Crew and if you enjoy entertainment that is fast-paced, romantic, dramatic, energetic and sexy, you will love Burn The Floor. What Will Be This Season's Breakout Hit-Part Two

Last week I highlighted the first eight shows to open on Broadway during the upcomimg 2009-2010 Broadway Season. Here now are the next nine.

Memphis:A New Musical(Shubert Theatre)Yes! A new musical. According to press notes Memphis," Takes place in the rockin' dance halls of Memphis, Tennessee comes this hot and bothered new Broadway musical with heart, soul and energy to burn. Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, it is the story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. The show which opened to very good reviews at the La Jolla Playhouse last year is the first new musical of the season. I am very excited about this show and I hope it is given a chance to succeed.
First Preview:October 19
Open Run

After Miss Julie(American Airlines Theatre)This new adaptation of August Strinberg's 1888 play takes place in 1945 and stars Sienna Miller, Johnny Lee Miller and a personal favorite of mine Tony nominee Marin Ireland who starred in last seasons reasons to be pretty. Buzz has been strong due to Sienna Miller and tickets are already starting to sell very well. As is always the case with Roundabout Theatre shows subscribers have most of the prime seats before the show already opens so don't wait until the last minute to get your tickets for what is sure to be a critical and audience favorite.
First Preview:September 18
Closes:December 6

Brighton Beach Memoirs-Nederlander Theatre
Neil Simon returns to Broadway with one of his most successful and popular plays. This new revival will also run in repertory with Broadway Bound. Both show's center around Eugene Morris of Brooklyn and his eccentric but loving family. Neil Simon is one of my favorite playwrights and I can't wait to see it.
First Preview-October 2
Open Run

Finian's Rainbow(St.James Theatre)-This revival of one of Broadway's most loved and controversial musicals returns to Broadway for the first time in over forty years fresh off a very successful run last Spring at The New York City Center Encores! That production received good reviews from critics and audiences alike. Can a show that played a limited run of five performances fill one of Broadway's largest theatres eight times a week? We will soon find out.
First Preview:October 8
Open Run

In The Next Room, or The Vibrator Play(TBA)Critically acclaimed American playwright will make her Broadway debut in this new play produced by Lincoln Center.Other than that there is no other info. Lincoln Center has an outstanding track record so I expect this show to at least be interesting. How can it not with a title like that?
First Preview:October 22
Open Run

Fela!(Eugene O'Neill Theatre)This new musical based on performer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones, with a book by Jim Lewis and Jones. Mr. Jones choreographed one of my favorite shows Spring Awakening, and I am very excited to see his new work. The show which had a very successful run Off-Broadway has been rumored to be moving to Broadway for the last year and a half. I'm glad to see it's finally going to happen. By the way the last show to play 39 Arts and transfer to Broadway was a little show called In The Heights. Perhaps you've heard of it? It won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2008. Will lighting strike twice again? I think so.
First Preview:October 19
Open Run

Ragtime(Neil Simon Theatre)Has it really only been 10 years since the last production closed? The show which first premiered in the brand new Ford Center for the Performing Arts(Now the Hilton) Why the changed the name I'll never know. Oh that's right. Because the big bad hotel chain bought them out. Well I guess it's better than the Holiday Inn or the Super 8 Theatre. Anyway back to Ragtime. Before the show first opened in late 1997 it had a very well received run in Toronto and was expected to be a massive hit when it moved to Broadway. The show got very good reviews and was nominated and expected to win the Tony for Best Musical. Only problem was that was the same year as Lion King and well we all know what happened there don't we? Lion King won the Tony and Ragtime closed within two years losing millions of dollars in the process. Now most people believe the major downfall of Ragtime was not the show but it's producer and his overspending. By the way that producer was convicted last month for embezzlement. Karma is a bitch. This new production which opened to rave reviews in Washington D.C is said to be a lot smaller and better than the original. We will soon find out won't we?
First Preview:October 23
Open Run

Race(Ethel Barrymore Theatre)David Mamet returns to Broadway for the second year in a row with his first new play on Broadway since last years November. The show which Mamet is also directing stars James Spader and Richard Thomas. Spader who is one my favorite actor's will make his Broadway debut with this new show. Little is known about the piece but expect lots of controversy and of course profanity.
First Preview:November 16
Open Run

Broadway Bound(Nederlander Theatre)See Brighton Beach Memoirs
First Preview:November 18

Well that's the season so far. Which will fail and which will succeed? I myself can't wait to find out.

Another Happy Customer....

They don't call me a chatterbox for no reason. I guess that it is a good thing that I was blessed to talk a lot.....This morning a very nice lady called looking for 4 tickets to Lion King. I checked and told her I could get her seats for $160 per ticket in the Orchestra. She told me that was a little more then she wanted to spend and asked if there were any other seats that were a bit less money. I asked if she was flexible with her dates and she told me what dates would work. I was able to get her seats in the mezzanine for $120 per ticket she was thrilled. She told me she was having visitors from out of town and they were wanting to get to see The Lion King for a few years. I finished up her order and gave her all the information she would need. She then proceeded to thank me for helping her and telling me another company she called would not give her the time of day let alone check dates and work with her. She told me she would be calling Applause the next time she needed theatre tickets. Hey it was all in a days work. So remember for the best seats at the best prices not to mention best customer service call Applause for all you ticket needs.

Gayle started buying tickets from Applause about 2 years ago after my friend Steve told her about my ticket service. Steve tells everyone he meets about his friend Rich Gladstone, The Broadway Ticket Man. Some call me, some use other ticket services.

So anyway, Gayle calls me and says "Rich, I want to take my friends and family to see Hair The Musical on Friday August 14th. Can you get us some great seats". I said "Gayle, I have 2 suggestions for you, first I can get you excellent seats right now for around $180.00 each or we can wait a week or two and obtain seats for a discount of around $50.00 less each ticket". Gayle simply said "Rich, do whatever you have to as long as the seats are good seats and let me know".

So I have an order sitting on my desk for Gayle which I will fill with the very best available seats. I will buy them at a discount that the Broadway Shows offer from time to time. Then I will add on a reasonable service charge for my company's efforts and sell them to Gayle at a far reduced price. What could be better than this type of customer experience?

As we all live in a time of economic uncertainty and witness many stores having all kinds of sales, Applause takes the approach of always offering "the best seats at the best prices". This concept coupled with Applause's trademark of "excellent customer service", has allowed us to continue our successful ticket agency for nearly 22 years now. We don't believe in charging high prices. We believe in treating shoppers and customers the way we ourselves want to be treated when we shop.

Many of us feel that the Internet has made it easier to buy Broadway tickets but I personally think it has made it more confusing. When you click on a show and a date for a Broadway Show, you usually see dozens of sets of inventory at many different prices. I am an experienced ticket buyer for my own company and some times it is difficult to figure out which seat and price is better than the next offering.

So where am I going with this discussion? It's simple really. Applause Theater Service (New York State license # 71AP1001029) has been around a long time, much longer than most others claiming they're legit ticket brokers. We find ourselves being in the position of being one company that sells tickets among hundreds of companies these days. How will we help Applause "stand out" from all this competition?

The answer is a simple one. Customers like my friend Steve or Gayle from Connecticut will tell dozens of people they come into contact with to call my little ticket agency called Applause. It's really the best marketing we could have. People telling other people that Applause is "friendly, knowledgeable and trustworthy". We couldn't ask for more than that.

So this blog is to say thanks to the Applause Theater Service community of fans that like and appreciate our ticket service. If we can be of service to you when your plans include a visit to a Broadway Show, we hope you'll call us locally in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Take care now.

West Side Story-Broadway's Most Popular Revival

The reviews are in and it's unanimous from critic's and audiences alike. West Side Story is a hit. The show has been playing to packed houses eight times a week at the Palace Theatre since it began previews in late March. The movie has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it during my Freshman English class in high school. We were studying Romeo and Juliet so our teacher thought we should see a Modernized version of the Shakespearean classic. I'll admit that when these supposed tough guys started dancing every guy in my class began to crack up. It wasn't until years later that I learned to appreciate the show for the masterpiece that it truly is. I had the opportunity to see the show during the first week of previews and thought it was very good. My favorite was Karen Olivo who won a much deserved Tony Award last month for her portrayal of Anita. She is worth the price of admission alone. The show is currently on sale right now thru January 31 and I expect it to be around for a very long time. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see West Side Story on Broadway. It is a show for the ages.
