A View from the Bridge on Broadway Begins a Limited 4 Month Run at New York's Cort Theater

Here's an insiders tip on a great Broadway play you may want to see this season. It is an Arthur Miller play called A View from the Bridge, a play which just opened at New York City's Cort Theater a few days ago. After reading some reviews and finding out that the day after the official opening of A View from the Bridge, that the show took in over $500,000.00 at the box office, it seems obvious that the shows two lead stars could very well be the reason.

A View from the Bridge tickets are already becoming a "hard to get" ticket on Broadway. The play takes place in the 1950's, telling the unique story of Eddie Carbone, a married Brooklyn longshoreman and his fascination with his 17-year old orphaned niece Catherine. Eddie and Catherine are played by big screen stars Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately for Eddie, apparently Catherine falls for one of Eddie's newly arrived immigrant relatives from Italy. Eddie's jealously gets the best of him and his rage follows him wherever he goes affecting his family and his entire life.

A View from the Bridge has had several revivals on Broadway since Mr. Miller wrote this terrific play in 1956. This show appears to be able to stand the test of time and the shows creative team manage to give the audience the feel that they are really in 1950's Brooklyn, nearby the Brooklyn piers. Direction is by Gregory Mosher who was last seen on Broadway 18 years ago in the revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. Helping to recreate the Brooklyn surroundings are set designer John Lee Beatty and lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski with costume design by Jane Greenwood.

A View from the Bridge tickets are on sale now through April 4, 2010. It's not likely the show will extend its run past this date as Ms. Johansson has a film commitment right after that. The show plays daily and takes Monday's as its day off.

If you think A View from the Bridge is a play that is of interest to you and your family, feel free to contact a local ticket agency called Applause Theater Service (license #71AP1001029) in New York City. These folks have been around the ticket business for more than 22 years now. Applause can offer you some "real" advice on how to get the best seats and prices for A View from the Bridge when you are ready to talk.

I hope you found this information helpful.

Cheers,
Rich Gladstone

American Idiot Cast Announced

Final casting was announced yesterday for the highly anticipated new musical American Idiot. Leading the cast are Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony nominee Stark Sands and Michael Esper. The show which is based on Green Day's American Idiot is set to begin previews at the St. James Theatre on March 24 with an official opening set for April 20. The show is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer who co-wrote the book with Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong.

Speculation on whether the show would open this season was enhanced by it's critical run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California last fall. The show which runs a mere 95 minutes is being hailed as one of the highlights of the 2009-2010 Broadway season. Here is a brief description of the show according to a production source.

"American Idiot follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post 9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. This high-octane show includes every song from the acclaimed album 'American Idiot,' as well as
several songs from the band's three-time Grammy- nominated new release,"21st Century Breakdown."

I myself am looking forward to seeing the show. The album is a personal favorite of mine and I really hope it does well. By the way tickets are set to go on sale on February 14. Get your tickets to see American Idiot on Broadway. Expect it to be a big Tony contender this Spring.

The theater has already booked the revival of Fences starring Academy Award winner Denzel Washington set to begin previews on April 14. Not only that but it's star Scarlett Johansson has a film scheduled to commence shooting this Spring. Good seats are still available for most performances so don't delay. Rock Of Ages Gives Back

As we all know the recent horrific situation in Haiti has left the country in ruin and left thousands of people virtually homeless. Over the past couple of weeks celebrities and people from all walks of life have given their time and money to help the cause. You can now count a few more among those people. Earlier this week it was announced that the cast of Broadway's Rock of Ages are auctioning off backstage tours to raise funds for the relief effort in Haiti.

Here is a statement from Kerry Butler one of the stars of the show. “We’re very excited about this auction package we’ve been offering for the past week, which will include a drink with James Carpinello and me at Glass House afterward,” Butler said in a statement. “We hope this will encourage others to look at their spheres of influence and think about what else they can do for Haiti. A lot has been given by the public, but so much more is needed for the long-term recovery.”

Updates on the auction can be viewed via Ms. Butlers twitter feed. I applaud the cast and hope other Broadway shows will soon follow suit in the coming weeks. Until next time theatre fans.

God Of Carnage New Cast Announced

Look I know what you're thinking. Didn't a God of Carnage just have a cast change? Believe it or not that was over two months ago. Time sure does fly doesn't it? So anyway the producers of the show announced yesterday that it's next quartet of actor's will begin performances on March 2. Now suffice to say there are a few surprises with with this cast. First of all Jeff Daniels who was nominated for his part in the original cast is switching roles and will now be playing the part portrayed by his former Tony nominated co-star James Gandofini. Playing his wife is Tony winner Janet McTeer who was last on Broadway is last season's Mary Stuart and who played the part in the London cast.Rounding out the cast are stage and screen star Dylan Baker and Lucy Liu. Quite an interesting foursome don't you think. No there were many out there who thought the show would never survive without it's four original stars. Yet here we are and it's about to celebrate it's first anniversary on Broadway. Tickets are now on sale thru June 20. Get your tickets to see God of Carnage. Need Advice When Buying Broadway Tickets?

I am often amazed when people I speak with tell me how much they overpay when they buy tickets for Broadway, Concerts and Sporting Events. Being a long time Broadway ticket industry veteran and knowing the ins and outs of pricing to various shows, when I talk with folks that call my company, Applause Ticket Agency in New York City, I try my best to inform the public that there is simply no need to pay outrageous prices for tickets.

For instance, if you are from out-of-town and don't really know what the demand is for a particular Broadway Show, how would you know if you could possibly obtain a "discount" for a show that is not selling out? Let me explain. The average orchestra seat usually has a printed price on it of around $130.00, some a little more and some a little less. Then you might also pay a ticket service like ours a service charge, anywhere from 25 % and higher depending upon the price of the ticket. So a customer might pay upwards of $160.00 or so as a final price, sometimes more. I might add that paying a service fee is not a bad thing when you consider what you get for your money. Like advice on where to sit in the theater, which date or dates you might be able to attend the show of your choice so that we can provide a better seat for you. Another reason to want a service like ours to help is that we can suggest some really fantastic places to dine before the theater, not something anyone else in the ticket business offers to do, to my knowledge. We also make suggestions on hotel choices, shopping and the like. You name it, we live and work here and know New York City really well. We want to help you make your visit to Broadway as great an experience as possible. We truly do.

Last and certainly not least, I sincerely believe that most people overpay for their Broadway Show tickets. Something I can prove to you if you give us a call. All you have to do is shop around, call ticket companies and get seat locations and prices for the Broadway Shows of your liking. Then take a minute and call my company Applause Ticket Agency (license #71AP1001029). Ask us any questions you like (don't forget to ask us our opinion of the shows you want to see). You can't imagine how many times some folks think they want to see a particular show but by the time they're done making all the arrangements, they often choose other shows that are more to their liking.

It is hard to write about oneself as we don't want to appear that we're bragging of course. Still the public needs to make informed decisions. The only way I think folks can find out how to make the right decision on Broadway Show ticket selections is to speak directly to local ticket companies in New York City. A simple call to Applause (that's us) and you'll know you are in the right place to get the accurate Broadway ticket information you covet.

We are here to help you with your Broadway Show ticket selections. Our ticket experts can be reached toll free at 800-451-9930 or locally at 212-307-7050, seven days a week.

I am one of the owners of Applause Ticket Agency. You have my personal guarantee that you'll be very happy with our Broadway ticket service. When you call, please ask for me, Rich Gladstone. Some people call me the BroadwayTicket Man. The other ticket guru's are Todd, Jay, Carol, Claudia, Billy, William and Bill. They want to help also.

London Breaks Records In 2009

Well it looks like Broadway wasn't the only one to experience a record breaking year in 2009. It was just announced that London's West End had one of it's best years to date. According to figures released by the Society of London Theatre both theatre attendance and box office revenue were at an all time high in 2009 with attendance at over fourteen million and box office revenue exceeding over a half a billion pounds. Among the shows that experienced the biggest increase were Billy Elliot who posted it's highest figures during Christmas and Sister Act The Musical who broke all previous box office records at London's Palladium Theatre.

Nica Burns, president of SOLT, commented, "Britain's artistic community continues to create exceptional work. The extraordinary quality and breadth of productions available nightly in London explains these record figures in such a difficult year economically. Whilst our musicals continue to flourish, 2009 was an outstanding year for plays – proving that audiences respond to challenge and stimulation as well as toe-tapping entertainment. Excellence is everything – look no further than London's theatre which adds a great deal more to London's revenue than just the ticket sales."

Don't forget that if you need tickets for any show in London we are just a phone call away.

Phantom Turns 22

That's right theatre fans. Broadway's longest running Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera celebrates an anniversary today. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1988 first premiered in London in September 1986 to great acclaim. It's original stars were Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and Steve Burton, all of whom reprised their parts for the Broadway run.

Growing up in Illinois I wasn't exposed to a lot of Broadway musicals except the ones I performed in during high school. Phantom was one of the first. I swear I must have worn out my first copy of the cast recording after a few months. Cut to five years later and I was living in New York pursuing my dreams of being an actor. Finally I was going to get to see the show that I had loved for so long. Although my expectations were high I was pretty sure that I would enjoy it.

Well long story short I enjoyed it. Now is it my favorite Broadway show of all time? No. Doesn't mean I didn't love it.Let's face it. Phantom is a New York institution. How much longer it will run is anybody's guess. Another two decades perhaps? Stranger things have happened.

Joel Cohen of New York City Vacation Packages- A Travel Professional and Artist

Joel Cohen is a very good friend of mine. Joel is the Vice President of travel industry expert New York City Vacation Packages. NYCVP is the only tour packager that promotes and sells New York City only as a destination (many sell New York but also sell every other city in the country as well). Joel often refers to New York City as "the greatest city in the world". NYCVP knows everything about New York City and is there to help you secure the best hotel room accommodations, the best theater tickets, sightseeing tours, restaurant dining assistance, shopping and dining discounts and offers lots of tips on what to do, where to go and just about anything else you might want to know when planning a trip to New York City.

What most folks don't know is that my friend Joel is an artist as well. And just like the excellence he portrays in running one of the greatest tour package companies in the world, Joel is an accomplished award-winning photographer as well. Joel has recently written a fantastic new book entitled "Random Photographs from Random Journey's". The book contains 40 amazing photographs that Joel has taken during 37 years of his life. They will give you a taste of Joel's travels to 10 countries and span 5 continents as well.

Joel's 40 photographs will clearly depict his love of nature, people, interesting structures but mostly convey his true love of travel. These magnificent photograph's include amazing pictures of a lone fisherman at the New Jersey shore, a government-owned sweatshop in Beijing, a cathedral courtyard in Aix-en-Provence and the American high desert.

If you or someone you know enjoys great art, you may want to consider having a peek at Joel's blog site. All 40 of Joel's photographs can be purchased separately and right now he is including complimentary shipping in the United States. For those of us that love life, travel and the wonderful journey we all partake in, Joel's superb photographs will make a terrific addition to your home or very special gifts for someone you care about.

Have a look for yourself at Joel's Random Photographs from Random Journeys collection and see what my amazingly talented friend Joel Cohen has created for all of us. Sure he's a great friend but a very talented "artist" as well.

Enjoy.

Cirque Du Soleil To Return To The Big Apple

Every one's favorite wacky performance artists are back and New York has got them. I am talking of course about Cirque Du Soleil. For those of you who have seen their work in the past you know that not only are you getting your money's worth but you are witnessing one of the most spectacular and unique events you will ever see. This new show entitled Banana Shpeel draws it's inspiration from the vaudeville shows of old. It's part comedy, part dance, and one hundred percent entertainment. Here is a brief synopsis of the show according to a production source.

"Propelled by crazy humor and intense choreography, Banana Shpeel plunges us into the world of Schmelky, a brash, ambitious producer who is trying to put together a spectacular variety show. His world is populated with sidekicks, dancers, singers and novelty acts - and a trio of badly-behaved clowns who crash the auditions spreading chaos in all directions."

Get your tickets to see Banna Shpeel live in New York City. Be advised that the show is a limited engagement, and runs through May 30, 2010 so don't delay.

Billy Elliot Reaches Milestone

That's right theatre fans. On January 24 Billy Elliot The Musical will celebrate it's 500th performance on Broadway. The show which won ten 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical opened on Broadway in November 2008 and continues to delight audiences of all ages eight times a week at the Imperial Theatre. It was also recently announced that the show recouped it's entire investment in fourteen months.

The cast is currently headed by Michael Dameski, Alex Ko, Trent Kowalik, Liam Redhead and Dayton Tavares, who rotate in the title role, with Kate Henning as Mrs. Wilkinson, Gregory Jbara as Dad, Carole Shelley as Grandma, Will Chase as Tony and Trevor Braun and Jake Evans Schwencke alternating as Michael.

Now unlike everyone else in my office I have never seen the show. To be honest it doesn't really interest me. What do I know? One of my favorite shows in the last few years was Passing Strange. Now while it was a critical and audience favorite it closed after six months. Besides being one of Broadway's biggest hits it continues to be one of London's most popular shows as well. Call now to get your tickets to see Billy Elliot The Musical on Broadway. It is a winner.

Chicago Hit Million Dollar Quartet To Open On Broadway This Spring

I don't know about you but I am really looking forward to seeing Million Dollar Quartet. The show which was an unexpected hit in Chicago is set to begin previews at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on March 13 with an official opening set for April 11. Now to be honest I wasn't familiar with the famous story that that the show is based on. For those others like me here is a brief synopsis of the show according to a production source.

"On December 4, 1956," press notes state, "an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the 'Father of Rock 'n' Roll,' who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time. . . . Million Dollar Quartet captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry's most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history."

This new production features such classic songs like Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "Sixteen Tons," "Who Do You Love?," "Great Balls of Fire," "Riders in the Sky," "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On."

Portraying the famous foursome are Eddie Clendening, Lance Guest, Levi Kreis and Rob Lyons, who all appeared in the Chicago cast.It was just announced today that Tony nominee Hunter Foster(Little Shop of Horrors) as music producer Sam Phillips and Elizabeth Stanley(Cry-Baby) as Dyanne, a woman who arrives with Elvis.

Now like I said before I am really looking forward to this show. Expect it to be the sleeper hit of the season.

The 39 Steps To Return To New York

So I guess the new hip thing now is to take an established long running hit on Broadway and move it to Off-Broadway after it's initial run. Sounds strange right?Well not so fast.It all started with Avenue Q. The show which beat Wicked for the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2004 enjoyed a six year run on the Great White Way and was scheduled to close last September. However during the final curtain call the producers announced that while the show was playing it's final performance on Broadway they were moving to a more intimate theatre Off-Broadway. Suffice to say theatre insiders and fans of the show were shocked. I know I was. Now I loved Avenue Q so I was just happy to see that it was going to remain part of the New York theatre scene for the foreseeable future.

Now back to the real reason for my blog. The 39 Steps. The show which first opened on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre in January 2008 played it's final performance on Broadway on January 10 after 771 performances and three different theatres. It also was the longest running play on Broadway in over seven years. Now I saw the show and while I found it funny at some points I never would have guessed it would have lasted this long. Now to be fair there aren't a lot of comedies out there. The majority of the plays that have opened on Broadway in the last few years have been dramas. Either way The 39 Steps is here to stay. Previews are set to begin Om March 25 at New World Stages.Until next time theatre fans.

Support Live Theatre

Planning a trip to the Big Apple in the near future? Well have I have got news for you. Now is the best time to come to New York and see a show. Did you know that there are currently twenty-one shows running on Broadway as we speak with eighteen more set to open within the next few months. Oh and don't forget Off-Broadway home to over twenty shows as well. That's what makes theatre in New York so exciting. So much variety. Over the years in the city I have probably seen over one hundred and fifty shows. Now in all of them I usually found something I liked. Although I'm also the type of person who loves bad theatre. There's nothing like a great train wreck. I know. I'm weird. Regardless of the show there is nothing in the world like live theatre. That feeling of sitting in a theatre with a bunch of strangers waiting for the magic to begin. Come to New York and experience it for yourself.

A View From The Bridge To Open This Sunday

One of this season's most highly anticipated shows and one that I personally am dying to see is Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge. This new revival which was last seen in 1998 first premiered on Broadway in 1955 and became of Arthur Miller's most critically acclaimed plays. Previews for this production which began on December of last year stars Tony winner Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson who is making her Broadway debut. Ticket sales have been strong and if the reviews are good expect this to be one hot ticket. Just a reminder. The show is only selling tickets thru April 4th so don't wait. Get your tickets to see A View From The Bridge on Broadway. It is one of Broadway's finest.

Tony Winner Next To Normal To Tour Next Year

That's right theatre fans. One of last season's most critically acclaimed shows is set to tour the country in 2011. If you haven't seen Next To Normal on Broadway well don't you dare miss it if it comes to your city. The show which won three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Actress and Best Music is not only one of the most original musicals out there but one of it's most touching as well. Now I know there are those of you out there who may not want to see it due to it's subject matter or because you might have heard that it is a little on the depressing side. You know what I say? Big deal. Life is depressing at times. There is no such thing as the perfect family or the perfect situation. I don't care who you are. That is what makes the show so powerful. Now for the twenty-five thousand dollar question. The show has been very successful during it's Broadway run. How it will play around the country is another story. I personally think it will do very well if people just give it a chance. We shall see.

2010 London Theatre Season

Planing a trip across the pond in the near future? Well have I got great news for you. The theatre season in London is heating up right now with several high profile projects on the horizon. First up is one of this season's most highly anticipated shows in years. I am of course talking about Love Never Dies, the sequel to Broadway's longest running show, The Phantom of the Opera. The show which has been in development for several years now is set to beginning previews on February 20 at London's Aldelphi Theatre, with an official opening set for March 9.

Leading the cast are Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess(Ariel from Broadway's The Little Mermaid) as the Phantom and Christine. According to a production source Love Never Dies,"Is set ten years after Phantom ends, The Phantom has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House—to the fairgrounds of Coney Island. Talk about a change of scenery! It's Phantom of the Cyclone. All the major players are back, including Christine, Raoul and Madame Giry. And, taking a tip from the title, it's a good bet that the Masked One's feelings for Christine have not dimmed."

The show is expected to open this fall on Broadway with the rumored theatre being the Neil Simon. Will lighting strike twice? We shall see.

Last week I posted a blog about the glowing reviews that Legally Blonde The Musical received from the London critics. Who knew the Brits would be charmed by a smart and perky blonde from California? I sure didn't. As of right now the show is on sale thru the end of June but I expect it to be a round for the foreseeable future.

Also getting a lot of buzz is the return of Academy and Tony Award winner Jeremy Irons in The God's Weep. The show which opens on March 17 will mark Mr. Iron's first time on a London stage in twenty-three years. The show is only running thru April 3.

Quite a season so far huh? Don't forget that Applause sells tickets not only to the three shows I mentioned but every show in London. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to London and see for yourself. Who knows? You might even like it. Until next time theatre fans.

Next to Normal Musical Tickets in New York City

I am a big fan of Broadway Show musicals. One in particular is called Next to Normal, an amazing musical drama that tells the story of a family torn apart by the struggles of mental illness. Although not a show for the squeamish, I think Next to Normal is one of the finest Broadway Shows ever produced on Broadway.

The Next to Normal musical includes an awesome cast of 6 talented actors led by Alice Ripley and J. Robert Spencer, 2 Broadway veterans. The show won 3 Tony Awards in 2009 including a Best Actress award for Ms. Ripley.

Being in the Broadway ticket industry for over 32 years now, I follow the weekly sales that each show makes. Although the Next to Normal musical is an outstanding critical success at New York's Booth Theater for over 9 months now, the show seems to be available on most weeknights, not really selling out of all of its inventory. With this in mind I wanted to let theater lovers all over the country in on a little secret.

Right now our ticket company, Applause Ticket Agency (license #71AP1001029), can get the theater-going public excellent seats at amazing prices for Next to Normal musical tickets. From now through February 28, 2010 (except for the busy February 12 to 14 weekend), Applause Ticket Agency has terrific orchestra seats for Next to Normal for below face value. Which means you get the best seats below cost.

If you are interested in seeing an amazing piece of Broadway Theater that is called Next to Normal, consider a call to us. We're friendly and we know lots about all the Broadway Shows.

Speak with you soon, I hope. Just say the Broadway Ticket Man sent you.

Memphis Celebrates 100 Performances

One of this season's most critically acclaimed shows has just reached a milestone. Memphis The Musical just celebrated it's 100th performance on January 14.The show which began previews at the Shubert Theatre on October 19, 2009 had been a crowd pleaser since day one. In fact I have yet to hear from anybody who did not absolutely love it. The sad part is that in spite of all it's acclaim it is struggling at the box office. Last week the show was at sixty-one percent. Now bear in mind it's January when a lot of shows show low ticket sales. My guess is that with the lack of new musicals this year the show will try to hang on at least until the Tony Awards. Besides The Addams Family it is the only show with a score exclusively written for the stage. Will Memphis reach two hundred performances? We will soon find out.

Last Chance To See Bye Bye Birdie On Broadway

That's right theatre fans. You only have one more week to see Bye Bye Birdie. This new revival marks the first time on Broadway since the original 1960 production. Now while reviews for the show were not that good audiences of all ages have flocked to the theatre since it first opened in September 2009. Whether you loved the show or absolutely hated it you can deny it's appeal. I mean who hasn't either seen or starred in a their local high school or community theatre production of the show at least once in their lifetime. I have. For years there was talk about reviving the show on Broadway but nobody wanted to take a chance. Like it or not you have to commend the Roundabout Theatre Company for at least taking a chance on this beloved show. I'm guessing this will be the last time we will see another production of Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway again. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.

Phantom Winter Sale

That's right folks. Phantom of the Opera tickets are now on sale and Applause Theatre Service has got them. Not only that but at prices that can't be beat. The show which is now in it's record breaking twenty-second year on Broadway still continues to pack in audiences eight times a week at the Majestic Theatre. Being in the business I'm in it still amazes me after all these years just how popular the show remains. You would have thought it just opened a few months ago. I grew up listening to the show but let me tell you seeing it live is a whole different experience in itself. It is a must see.

As I'm sure you have already heard by the now the eagerly anticipated sequel to the show, Love Never Dies, is set to open this fall On Broadway. The rumour is that it is moving into the Neil Simon although nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Rehearsals began earlier this week for it's London premier and the buzz already is that it is going to be a hit. Can Broadway handle two Phantom musicals at the same time? We will soon find out.

Oh that's right. The Winter sale. That was the reason behind my blog in the first place. Forgive me. I tend to get sidetracked sometimes when I am talking about theatre. I love it so. From now thru March 13 Applause can get you tickets to see this beloved Broadway musical at some incredible savings. Who doesn't love a bargain? I do. Get your tickets to see The Phantom of The Opera on Broadway. It is a New York institution after all.

Hair-Broadway's Best Revival

O.K. so I may be a little partial. What can I tell you? I loved Hair. Now I know there are some people out there who might think that the show is a little too radical for their tastes. You know what I have to say about that? See something else then. There are over twenty shows playing on Broadway right now so it's like you don't have any options. Am I right? Look whether you see the show or not is up to you. I personally think you should give it a look see. To me it is everything a Broadway show be. Great music. An inspiring message. Not too mention a talented cast who give it their all from the moment they step on stage to the final curtain call. That's the type of theater that I love. That is the type of theatre that we should embrace and savor. That my friends is Hair. Not only one of the best shows currently running on Broadway right now but one of the best shows of all time. See it. You can thank me later.

The Miracle Worker To Go Sale Next Week

That's right theatre fans. One of this season's most anticipated shows is set to go on sale next week.Starting on January 18 tickets will go on sale for The Miracle Worker. The play which first began on television in 1957 as part of Playhouse 90 premiered on Broadway in 1959 to critical acclaim. The play like the movie starred Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke as Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller and won that years Tony Award for Best Play. Both stars would both win Academy Award for the 1962 feature film.

This new revival which will mark it's first time on Broadway since the original Broadway production is set to begin previews at Broadway's Circle In The Square on February 12 with an official opening set for March 3. Headlining the revival is Tony nominee Alison Pill as Annie Sullivan and Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller.

Now while I am familiar with the story I have never seen a live production or any of the television or movie versions of this beloved play. I have been a big fan of Ms. Pill's for many years now and can not wait to see what she brings to this role. Same with Ms. Breslin who is a star on the rise. If reviews are good expect The Miracle Worker to be a big contender come Tony time. We will soon find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Lion King On Broadway-Still A Must See

Now in it's twelfth year on Broadway is Disney's The Lion King. The 1998 Tony Award for Best Musical. Now for those of you who read my blogs know I am not the biggest Disney fan in the world. But I have to say I enjoyed the show. As far as pure entertainment it definitely delivers. In fact I dare anyone not to be totally blown away by the show during the first opening moments of the show. I won't spoil it for you but believe me it is incredible. The show which opened on Broadway in December 1997 continues to be one of Broadway's biggest hits of all time with no end in sight.

By the way the Producer's have recently announced that they have lowered the cost of the Front Mezzanine which by the way is the best view for this show. That's just my opinion. Now normally when you go to a Broadway show the Orchestra and the Front Mezzanine are the same price. Makes sense right? They are both considered top dollar seats after all. I applaud the producers for making the change. Let's be honest. Theatre tickets are expensive nowadays. In this economy any deal you can get is a good one. That is for sure. Get your tickets to see The Lion King on Broadway. It is an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Present Laughter on Broadway Will Have You in Stitches

I saw a really fantastic revival of Present Laughter last night at New York's American Airlines Theater. And boy am I so glad I did.

Present Laughter is a Noel Coward play and is being produced by the Roundabout Theater Company of New York City. Present Laughter began its recent revival tour at Boston's Huntington Theater Company in 2007 and after great success should sell lots of tickets to the New York theater crowd as well.

Present Laughter has an amazingly talented cast that includes Broadway regular Victor Garber. Many people recognize Mr. Garber from his roles on Broadway (Lend Me A Tenor, Art, Little Me, Damn Yankees) and the movies (Legally Blonde, Titantic and Milk as well as television's Alias and Nurse Jackie series. Although many in the theater community are talking about a possible Tony Award for Mr. Garber, in my personal opinion I think the entire cast should be commended for being a part of an awesome ensemble performance.

Present Laughter tells the story of an aging matinee idol by the name of Gary Essendine who apparently is struggling with the aging process. Gary sees his entire world as a stage and although he was a famous stage actor and a playboy in his younger days, these days he is simply trying to avoid the years passing him by. The Present Laughter play setting takes place in Gary's London apartment in the 1930's and includes him always trying to get rid of his entourage that seems to never leave him alone. His annoying group includes his almost ex-wife (they never took the time to get divorced), his secretary (played by Harriet Harris), some business partners, obsessed lovers and a lunatic playwright.

It's worth mentioning that the costume design by Jane Greenwood is outstanding in the way that she conveys what the attire at the time was like. In addition, Alexander Dodge's set design is worth the price of admission all by itself.

If you think you may want to purchase Present Laughter play tickets, consider calling Applause Ticket Agency (license #71AP1001029) in New York City right now. Applause Ticket Agency has insider discounts and seating for Present Laughter for most performances through February 28, 2010. All you have to do is call 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930 and ask for the Present Laughter below face value ticket deal. You can mention that Rich Gladstone said to call.

Cheers and enjoy your Present Laughter play tickets or any Broadway Show you see.

The Season Ahead Part 4

Well it's time for my final look at the remaning new shows this season. Here are the final four.

Fences(April 26)Those who know me know what a huge Denzel Washington fan I am. In fact I actually bought a ticket for his last Broadway show Julious Casear in 2005. I have also enjoyed August Wilson's plays but have yet to read this one. This new production will return to Broadway for the first time since the original 1987 production that won the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The first preview is set for April 1th with it set to open on April 26. Please note that the show is only scheduled to run for 13 weeks. When tickets are set to go on sale have yet be announced. When it does watch out. It is going to be one hot ticket my friends.

ENRON(April 27)This new play which is based on the 2001 scandal first premiered in London in July 2009 to outstanding reviews. For those of you unfamiliar with the story let me give you a little background on the scandal courtesy of Wikipedia.
"Revealed in October 2001, eventually led to the bankruptcy of the Enron Corporation, an American energy company based in Houston, Texas, and the dissolution of Arthur Andersen, which was one of the five largest audit and accountancy partnerships in the world. In addition to being the largest bankruptcy reorganization in American history at that time, Enron undoubtedly is the biggest audit failure." Could be interesting night in the theatre. Set to star as disgraced Enron executive is Tony Award winner and Broadway favorite Norbert Leo Butz.

Collected Stories(April 28)The show which first opened Off-Broadway in 1996 is set to make it's Broadway premier this Spring. This will also mark the second show by playwright Donald Marguiles to open this season. His other show Time Stands Still which is in previews now is also being produced by the Manhattan Theater Club. The show stars Tony Award winner Linda Lavin and one of my favorite actresses Sarah Paulson. Previews are set to begin on April 6 with an official opening set for April 28. Here is a brief description of the show according to a production source."Ruth Steiner is a teacher and respected short story writer. Her student and protege is Lisa Morrison. Over the course of 6 years Lisa journeys from insecure student to successful writer. Her fame comes from a novel based on Ruth's affair with poet Delmore Schwartz. The women deal with the moral dilemma of whether a person's life events are suitable for another to use in the creative process." I think I might have to check this one out.

Lips Together, Teeth Apart(April 29)Like Collected Stories this is another play that began it's journey Off-Broadway only to open years later on Broadway. One of Terrence McNally's most beloved plays is set to open the American Airlines Theatre this Spring. Heading the cast are Megan Mullally,Patton Oswalt, and Lily Taylor. The show takes place on Fire Island during the 4th of July and involves two straight couples. Will Roundabout Theatre Company finally have a hit? Time will tell.

Well there we are. Which one will fail and which one will scucceed? It's going to be a very interseting three months. Until next time theatre fans.

Celebrate Valentine's Day With A Broadway Show

That's right all you crazy romantics. Valentine's Day is only 30 days away and what better way to spend the evening with that certain someone than with a Broadway show. Well now that you have figured out how to spend your evening the next step is to pick the show. It's not as difficult as you might think you know. Give up? I guess I'l have to tell you. The Phantom of The Opera of course. Not only is it Broadway's longest running show but also one of the most romantic shows ever written. How about South Pacific? Not only is it a classic but it shows that love can conquer all obstacles. Now while I loved both shows my pick would be West Side Story. Now while the show may end on a depressing note there is no greater love story than this modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. Still can't decide? Well if you are looking for something a little different then might I suggest Rock of Ages. Besides having a great music it is another show about two strangers finding love against all odds. Well there you are. I've given you plenty of choices. The rest is up to you. Have a great Valentine's Day.

London Production Of Legally Blond Opens To Rave Reviews

Who would have thought that the British would love Elle Woods? I sure didn't. Now while I enjoyed the 2007 Broadway production of Legally Blonde I never expected that it would make the leap across the pond. It was a cute show. I'll give you that. The show which enjoyed a near eighteen month run on Broadway and failed to make back it's investment is currently selling out on the road. Who knows? Maybe they'll make their money back after all.

The show which began previews at London's Savoy Theatre opened last night to excellent reviews across the board. Here are a few comments from the critics.

Daily Telegraph
I tried, I really tried to hate this show, but resistance is futile." He went onto praise the production as "light, fast, fun and frothy."

The Independent
the musical is] ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish." For Taylor, the show was even an upgrade from the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, calling Heather Hach's lyrics "unflaggingly funny," and declaring Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin's score rich with "brassiness, bite, joie de vivre, sheer cheek, and even the odd strain of sadness."

The Times
"The audience cheered, whistled and made my cavils seem precious" and ends his review with "Let's agree that Legally Blonde is, well, fun."

Sounds like a hit to me. Tickets are on sale thru May 23, 2010 but don't be surprised if it extends. They would be foolish not to. Don't forget if you are looking to purchase tickets to see Legally Blond The Musical or any other show in London we are just a phone call away. Until next time theatre fans.

Defending The Caveman Returns To New York

That's right theatre fans. One of Broadway's longest and most successful shows is coming back to New York this Winter.Defending The Caveman. The show written by comedian Rob Becker first opened on Broadway in 1996 at the Helen Hayes Theatre where it ran for a record breaking 702 performances. I never saw the show during it's first run but always heard good things about it. This new production is set to begin previews Off Broadway on February 23 at The Downstairs Theatre at Sofia's which is located at 221 West 46th Street. Opening night is set for March 7. Tickets are on sale thru April 18.

For those of you who want to know a little bit about the show here is a brief description about the show. "With hilarious insights on contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zone," Defending the Caveman, according to press notes, "mines the common themes in relationships that go straight through the funny bone and into the heart. Broadway's Billy Elliot Recoups Investment

That's right theatre fans. Last year's biggest winner Billy Ellliot is now in the black. After only fourteen months the show has made back it's entire investment. The show which was budgeted at a staggering eighteen million dollars continues to be one of the Great White Way's biggest hits. I have yet to speak to anybody who didn't love the show.

It was recently announced that the Tony Award winning musical is set to launch it's National tour in Chicago on March 18 with a second tour to begin in November. The show continues to be a big hit in London as well. The musical won 10 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical and has a score by Elton John with music and lyrics by Lee Hall who also wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed 2000 film.

Billy Elliot The Musical is currently on sale thru January 2011. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Billy Elliot. It is fantastic.

The Addams Family Musical on Broadway-Preview Performances Begin March 8, 2010

To be or not to be, that is the question theater lovers. I am referring to the possibility of The Addams Family possibly winning the 2010 coveted Best Musical Tony Award this year. After reading about a dozen out-of-town reviews for the new Broadway bound musical The Addams Family, the Chicago theater critics had much to say about the show. Several loved the show, and some think that with a few changes here and there, that The Addams Family musical could enjoy a very long and successful run at New York's Lunt Fontanne Theater.

The Addams Family is a brand new musical that is based on the very successful television series which ran for 64 episodes from 1964 to 1966. They were each 30 minutes in length and were filmed in black and white. The Adams Family members were an extremely close knit group that seemed to possess some supernatural powers although they were never explained to those of us that grew up watching the series. The unique concept of The Addams Famliy revolved around their cultural differences and their "odd" physical appearances from the rest of the world. They were often amazed at the reactions from others that visited their home and have had interactions with family members, as they truly think of themselves as "normal" as the rest of the outside world.

The characters were based on cartoons by Charles Addams and were published in New York magazine. The Addams Family musical that just played a limited and very successful run in Chicago, will begin preview performances on Monday March 8, 2010 at New York's Lunt Fontanne Theater. The Addams Family musical will have one of the greatest Broadway casts ever assembled on a Broadway stage. They include lead stars Nathan Lane (playing Gomez Addams) and Bebe Neuwirth (playing his wife Morticia Addams). Rounding out the cast are Addams family members Krysta Rodriguez (playing their daughter Wednesday), Adam Riegler (playing son Pugsley), Kevin Chamberlain (playing the role of Uncle Fester), Jackie Hoffman (playing Grandma), and Zachary James (playing Lurch their butler).

The three other outstanding actors that complete the cast are Terrance Mann, Carolee Carmello and Wesley Taylor who play Mal, Alice and Lucas Beinekes. The Beinekes family, is your typical average "family next door" and are key to the story in The Addams Family musical as the Addamses daughter, named Wednesday, falls for The Beinekes son Lucas and lots of fun starts when the families meet and begin to get acquainted.

The Addams Family musical book is written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Directing and the creating the "incredible gothic look and design for this production are by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, usually associated with London theater productions and newly appointed creative consultant Jerry Zaks. Mr. Zaks was retained a few weeks ago to work with the shows directors and design staff. He is a legend on Broadway and is often brought into a show to streamline the story line, help with the comedic timing of jokes as well as make sure the characters are fully developed so the audience is always following the action every step of the way.

Rounding out The Addams Family creative team are Natasha Katz (lighting), Acme Sound Partners (sound), Basil Twist (puppetry), Mary Mitchell-Campbell (music direction), Greg Meeh (special effects), Larry Hochman (orchestrations) and Rick Sordelet (fight direction).

The Chicago critics have said that it looks like Nathan Lane is "having the time of his professional life". I can fondly remember Mr. Lane having a grand time portraying Max Bialystock in the 2001 Broadway hit The Producers. I understand that newcomer Krysta Rodriguez, playing the role of Wednesday, is an amazing performer and that her career may very well take a giant leap forward after becoming better well known in The Addams Family musical. I hear that Bebe Neuwirth is a very solid performer in the show (playing Gomez's wife Morticia) but that her "fear for getting older" may appear to be tiresome to some after a while. Other "midlife crises" subplots apparently consume a great deal of time in the show but my guess is that's why the producers of The Addams Family may have asked Jerry Zaks to help streamline the story. To make it flow better. One Chicago Daily Herald critic said that "the culture clash alone provides enough fodder for a musical.

Anyway, I feel certain that by opening night in New York that The Addams Family will be exactly what the Broadway audiences will want to see and hear. There's an abundance of talent on stage and on the creative side of this show so with a little tweaking here and there, many of us in the Broadway ticket business are thinking The Addams Family could be a monster size hit.

For anyone that grew up with television's The Addams Family, you may recall the "catchy" opening number played just before each episode began. Here goes:

Da-da-da-DUM, snap, snap!
Da-da-da-DUM, snap, snap!
They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
The Addams Family

West Side Story Winter Sale

Good news theatre fans. One of last years biggest hits is now available at some incredible savings. I am talking about West Side Story. The show which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical is one of the world's most beloved shows of all time. Growing up I was a huge fan of the movie but had never seen a live production. Therefore I was very excited when it was announced in the fall of 2008 that the show was coming back to Broadway for the first time since 1980.

Following a sold out run at the National Theatre is Washington D.C. the show opened on Broadway in March of 2009. The show received a lot of buzz initially when it was announced that four of the songs were to be performed in Spanish. While I applaud the idea of trying something new a lot of people did not care for it. Due to an overwhelming negative response from audiences the lyrics were switched back to English within six months.

While I enjoyed the show the highlight for me was the Tony winning performance of Karen Olivo as Anita. She was worth the price of admission alone. Good seats are available for all performances. In fact if you call Applause now we can get you tickets to see the show at some terrific prices. This offer is only good thru March 21 so don't delay. Get your tickets to see West Side Story The Musical on Broadway. It is fantastic.

January Slump

Last week I posted a blog stating that during the last week of December eleven shows grossed over a million dollars with Wicked hitting the two million mark. Well last week as expected saw a dip in almost all of the shows on Broadway. No surprise. It happens every year around this time. In fact more shows close in January and February then any other time of the year. With those being two of the slowest months some shows simply can't survive. It's sad I know. However there is good news ahead. Between now and the end of April twenty-one new shows are set to open. Looks like we are in for a busy Spring folks. One other silver lining to mention is that during these slow Winter months you can get tickets to some of your favorite shows at prices that are much less then any other time of the year. Now that is something to smile about. Don't forget to ask for our "Insider Deal" when you call and we will take care of the rest. It doesn't get and easier than that.

The Season Ahead Part 3

That's right theatre fans. It's time for Part three of my look at the remaining shows set to open this season. Let's take a look.

The Addams Family(April 8)One of the season's most anticipated shows. A few months ago it was the only new show expected to open so of course people were excited. Since then four new shows have been announced so what was once a sure fire hit isn't guaranteed. The show which features Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth received mixed reviews from the Chicago critics. Evidently these reviews were enough to cause a major upheaval as four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks was brought in to fix the show. Although he is officially listed as "Creative Consultant' he has been assured by the producers that he the one in charge. Will he be enough to fix the show? Let's hope so.

Million Dollar Quartet(April 11)This new musical is based on the December 4, 1956 impromptu jam session between Elvis Presley,Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash which was called Million Dollar Quartet. Based on the talent involved I would say that it's an appropriate title. The show first premiered in Florida before moving to the Village Theatre is Seattle where it broke box office records. Following that run it played to in Chicago at the Goodman and Apollo Theatre. I for one am looking forward to this show very much. Previews begin on March 13 at the Nederlander Theatre.

La Cage Aux Folles(April 18)Let's face facts. It's only been five years since the last revival. Do we really need another one? This new production which is based on the critically acclaimed London production at Menier Chocolate Factory stars Douglas Hodge and Kelsey Grammar. While I enjoyed the last revival I wasn't blown away by it. Even though it won the Tony for Best Revival it lost it's entire investment and closed eight months into it's run.

American Idiot(April 20)Late last week I posted a blog about the show. Green Day on Broadway? Who would have thought that? I sure didn't. Based on the pictures I've seen of the show it reminds me a little of Pink Floyd's The Wall.A masterpiece in my opinion. I have to admit I'm only familiar with a few songs from the album but I loved those. The show is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer who gave us Spring Awakening four years ago. Will lighting strike twice? I don't know. I hope it does. It's already my pick for Best Musical but we shall see.

Sondheim On Sondheim(April 22)This new musical revue features live music and video interviews with Stephen Sondheim. There a lot of Sondheim fans out there. Will it be a hit? Who knows? Because it's being produced by the Roundabout Theater Company it already has a guaranteed audience due to it's large subscription base. Following years of critical blunders Roundabout could use a hit.

Well there we are. Later on this week I will highlight the remaining five shows set to open this Spring. Looks like an interesting season so far. Until next time theatre fans.

Sondheim On Sondheim Now On Sale

That's right Sondheim fans. Tickets are now available for one of this season's most anticipated shows. I am talking about Sondheim on Sondheim. This musical revue is set to begin previews at Studio 54 on March 19 with an official opening set for April 22. Here is a brief description of the show according to producers. "He brought us Into The Woods, Company, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, West Side Story and Gypsy (to name a few)," according to the Roundabout. "By writing songs that reflect the complexity of his characters, he has changed the way we define a great musical. But even though millions of fans know his songs by heart, few know much about Stephen Sondheim himself. Until now. Roundabout presents Sondheim On Sondheim, an intimate portrait of the famed composer in his own words... and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, you’ll get an inside look at Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process."

Starring in Sondheim On Seindheim are a varity of Broadway veterans and newcomers. They are Tony Award winner Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams, Tom Wopat, Leslie Kritzer, Norm Lewis, Euan Morton, Erin Mackey and Matthew Scott. Directing the show is longtime Sondheim collaborator James Lapine. Now I'll be the first to admit that I am not the biggest Sondheim fan in the world. Although I loved Roundabout's 2008 production of Sunday in the Park With George. Maybe I'll give this one a shot. I do love Vanessa Williams. Be advised that the show is a limited engagement scheduled to run thru Jun 13. However if the reviews are good I wouldn't be surprised if it extends. We will soon find out.

Will Spider-Man Ever Open

Well according to it's director Julie Taymor it will open in 2010. Here is her statement."With a team that includes Bono, Edge and Glen Berger, there was never a question in my mind that Spider-Man would happen — it was just a matter of when. I am delighted that Michael Cohl(Producer) is making this a reality." The show which was supposed to begin previews on February 25 has been postponed although no official statement has been made. Come on. Who do think they're fooling? Anybody with a brain in their head could figure out that the show was not going to happen. Yet the producers of the show continued to deceive the public by not only continuing to sell tickets but by refusing to acknowledge what was really going on. Will the show open this year? If I had to bet money on it I would have to say yes. Millions have dollars have already been spent for it not too. Plus do you really think that Bono and The Edge would have invested their time and talent just to have it fail and their reputation tarnished. I think not. Let the games begin. Until next time theatre fans.
