Broadway Grosses:Week Ending February 27

It's that time again. Give up? Well if you read the title then you know it's time to discuss last week's grosses. Now normally I just post results and move on to my next blog. Not that the grosses are not important or newsworthy. It's just that since last month it's pretty much been the same shows. Therefore not much to report. However there is good news ahead my friends. Between now and the end of April there are twenty-one shows set to open.

Now believe it or not but that many shows is not out of the ordinary as most shows open in the Spring in time for Tony consideration. As of now there are seven new musicals. Eight if you include Spider-Man. That's of course of it actually opens on March 15. Enough about the new shows. I'll save that for another blog. On to the grosses. No big surprises. Wicked was the top selling show followed by Spider-Man:Turn Off The Dark,The Lion King,American Idiot, and Jersey Boys. Wait a minute. One of these things is not like the other.

Care to guess which one I'm talking about? That's right American Idiot. Now the truth is the only reason the show made so much money was because it was the final week of Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong's run in the show. This week it will be lucky to hit 50%. Bring on the discounts. Bringing up the rear last week were Lombardi,The Importance Of Being Earnest,Driving Miss Daisy,Ghetto Klown, and La Cage Aux Folles. Until next time theatre fans.

Tony Winner Memphis Now Available For Below Face Value

Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards is Memphis. The show which began it's journey in 2003 at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts prior to it's critically acclaimed runs in San Diego and Seattle recently celebrated it's 500th performance on Broadway. That my friend's is what we call a milestone.

Now in it's second year on Broadway, "Memphis tells the story of Huey Calhoun a white radio DJ who wants to change the world and a black club singer who is ready for her big break. Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves -- filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock 'n' roll." Sounds like a winner to me.

Featuring book and lyrics by Tony winner Joe DiPietro and a score by Bon Jovi keyboardist and fellow Tony winner David Bryan Memphis is one the most exciting not too mention energetic shows to hit Broadway in years. Catchy tunes? Check. Some of the best dancing on Broadway? It's got that and then some. It's rare when something new and original like Memphis comes to Broadway.

I highly suggest you check it out next time you're in town. You will love it. I know I did. By the way for those of you who still haven't seen this award winning musical I have got some incredible news. Good seats are available this Spring for prices that can't be beat. Who says you can't find a bargain these days. Get your tickets to see Memphis on Broadway. The 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.

Customer Story

Three customer stories in one week? I thought two was a lot. What can I say? Our customers just love Applause. Now normally I post my weekly customer blog on Monday's that way I have a whole week of customer's to choose from. Makes sense right? However this past week I had so many great conversations that it was too hard to choose. So I decided not to and picked my top three instead.

Earlier this week I wrote about a woman from Illinois (My home state) who was looking for tickets for two shows. Two new shows at that. Luckily I was able to get her great seats for below face value. My other top customer was one of our regular concierges who needed tickets for a sold out event in Brooklyn. Thanks to a our ticket board I was able to come thru with a pair of house seats for the event.

Anyway today's customer story comes from a woman who I sold tickets to a few weeks ago to a show in London. Not just a show, but one if the hottest shows in London. Care to take a guess? Warhorse. Which by the way is coming to Broadway in just a few weeks. In fact our phones have been ringing off the hook from people looking to get tickets to the show. The show hasn't even started and it's already one of the hottest tickets in town. Back to my story.

The customer called me yesterday to thank me for the tickets and for suggesting where to sit. Now while she is a Tony voter and will be seeing the upcoming Broadway production she really wanted to see the London production first as she had heard great things about it. I thanked her for her call and told her to give me a call if I could help her in anyway in the future. She told me that she would definitely use us again and was going to recommend our service to all of her friends. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Applause Theatre Service Sells Tickets To All Off-Broadway Shows

Now let's be honest when most people think of theatre in New York they first thing that comes to mind is Broadway. Makes sense to me. New York is the theatre capitol of the world after all and everybody knows that when somebody comes to visit most people will see at least one Broadway show while they are here.

I know if I was coming here for a visit it would be the first thing on my list. Well that and the Statue of Liberty. What can I say? I'm a tourist at heart I guess. Now suppose you want to see a show but Broadway is not your thing. Look we all know that going to a Broadway show can be expensive.Off-Broadway? Not so much.

Sure it's not going to come cheap either but there are bargains out there. You just have to know where to look. Plus by supporting Off-Broadway or in some cases Off-Off Broadway you are not only getting the chance to witness new and exciting work but helping nurture up and coming artists who if successful may one day be able to take the leap to the Broadway stage.

Do you know how many shows began their journey Off-Broadway only to become huge hits on the Great White Way? Not to mention Tony winners as well. How about Rent? Winner of four 1996 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. That show ran for twelve years and was recently announced to be returning to New York this Summer at an Off-Broadway theatre.

Now that's what I call a full circle. How about last year's big Tony nominee Fela! or In The Heights which took home the Tony Award for Best Musical and is soon to be a major motion picture. The list goes on and on. What can I say? Off-Broadway is where it's at. Get your tickets today. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Until next time theatre fans.

More Spider-Man Drama

Now I know I said in yesterday's blog that I wasn't going to write anymore about Spider-Man until after it opens. Yeah like that was going to happen. According to yesterday's New York Times that may be a long ways away. Scheduled to open up back in December the show has postponed it's opening night a record five times already. Not to mention the fact that it was originally supposed to open in February 2010. Guess they are having some problems huh? If this new rumour is in fact true the troubled $65 million dollar musical will not open until late June. Therefore missing the chance to receive any Tony nominations for the 2010-2011 Broadway season. Maybe that's a good thing. With seven new musicals set to open in the next two months Spider-Man would have a lot of stiff competition come award time. Not like most expect it to get many nominations let alone a win. Stranger things have happened. Until then I will take delight in the continuing soap opera that is Spider-Man:Turn Off The Dark. Until next time theatre fans.

See Mamma Mia The World's Most Popular Musical For Less This Spring

Who knew that Mamma Mia was that popular? Well according to the big sign hanging from the Wintergarden Theatre on Broadway Mamma Mia is more popular that any other show on the planet. Of course I had to find out for myself. Let's face it a sign like that is there to attract people walking by in hopes they will run into the theatre and buy a ticket. Smart advertising on their part. They aren't #1 for nothing after all.

Of course the music might have something to do with it too. I mean ABBA did sell over 475 million records in a span of ten years making them the fourth highest selling act in music history. Now I like their music as much as they next guy but to be honest the show has never interested me. In fact I've never seen the show or the 2007 hit movie starring the one and only Meryl Streep. Who knew she could sing?

Now for those of you who still haven't seen the show there is no better time than right now. Although at this point I might be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn't. Me being the exception of course. Right now is the perfect time to see Mamma Mia on Broadway. In fact if you call now you can get tickets to see the "World's Most Popular Musical" for below face value. Now that's what I call a bargain. Get your tickets to see Mamma Mia on Broadway. Millions of ABBA fans can't be wrong.Until next time theatre fans.

Get Tickets This Spring To See The Phantom Of The Opera For Below Face Value

Now in it's 23rd record breaking year on Broadway is The Phantom of the Opera. The show which won seven 1988 Tony Awards including Best Musical has been seen by over a 100 million people since it first premiered in the West End in 1986 and has been seen in over 25 countries. The New York production which holds the record as the longest running show in Broadway history has grossed over $5 billion dollars worldwide with the New York production grossing over $715 million. I guess it's a success.

Now unlike most people I have only seen the show once an that was over seventeen years ago. Now as much as I enjoyed the show once was enough for me. Now for those of you who have yet to see it or for those Phantom fanatics that are dying to see it again for the 55th time there is no better time than the present. Yes believe it or not but I recently came across somebody who has seen the Broadway production 54 times.

Scary right? Hey I'm not one to judge. I saw Rent over twenty times and trust me if I could have afforded it that number would be much higher. Anyway back to the reason for today's blog which is to tell you on how you can see Phantom for less. From now thru the end of May you can get excellent seats to this beloved musical for prices that are......wait for it.....below face value. Get your tickets to see The Phantom of the Opera. It's not Broadway's longest running show for nothing.

Nathan Lane And The Cast Of The Addams Family To Play Final Performance On March 6

That's right theatre fans. You only have one more week to catch the original cast of Broadway's The Addams Family. Now technically the whole cast is not leaving. You've still got Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. Oh and don't forget Zachary James as Lurch, Adam Riegler as Pugsley, and of course the always hysterical Jackie Hoffman as Grandma.

Joining the cast of kooky characters are Tony winner Roger Rees as Gomez and Broadway faves Heidi Blickenstaff as Alice Bienke and Tony nominee Brad Oscar as Uncle Fester. Earlier this month I posted a blog stating that while I loved the show I worried that the show would not survive for very long without it's main star. I love Bebe as much as the next person. but she's not Nathan.

Now do I expect the show to up and close in the next month? No. However with the onslaught of new shows coming in in the the next two months there is going to be a whole lot more competition. My guess is it will last at least until Labor Day. However if some of the new shows fail then it might have a chance.

Keep your fingers crossed. Now there is a silver lining to all this believe it or not. With the departure of it's leading man next week more seats will become available. That means better seats and not only that but at lower prices as well. Who doesn't love a bargain? Get your tickets to see The Addams Family on Broadway. Take it from me. You will love it.

New Broadway Revival Of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying Now In Previews

It's hard to believe that there are only two revivals opening on Broadway this season. Anything Goes and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Lat year there were six with La Cage Aux Folles being the only one that remains. Of course the fact that it won the Tony Award for Best Revival probably has something to do with it. That and the fact that it's author and fellow Tony winner Harvey Fierstein is starring in the show now. Let's fact it most revivals are lucky to last more than a year. Two years if their lucky. Anything Goes starring Tony winners Sutton Foster and Joel Grey is set to begin previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 10 with opening night scheduled for April 7.

I know. I know. You came here to get info about the one starring Harry Potter. So let me get to it. How to Succeed begins previews tonight at the Al Hirscfeld Theatre with opening night set for March 27. Four weeks of previews? Who do they think they are Spider-Man? Just kidding. Four weeks is the normal time allotted for previews. Hear that Julie Taymor? Four weeks. Not four months. Enough Spider-Man bashing. I''ll save that until after they open. Look for my blog in April 2012. Now I actually saw the last revival of the show in 1995.

It starred Matthew Broderick who won a Tony Award for his performance as J. Pierrepont Finch and future sitcom star and Emmy winner Megan Mullally as Rosemary. The show ran for a total of 548 performances and was also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical where it lost that year to ShowBoat. Now when I saw it back in the fall of 1995 it was not with Matthew Broderick but with John Stamos in his Broadway debut. He would of course later go on to star in the revivals of Cabaret, Nine, and last year's big flop Bye, Bye Birdie. Leading the cast of this revival is Daniel Radcliffe A.K.A. Harry Potter as Finch and five time Emmy winner John Larroquette (Night Court, The Practice) as his boss J. B. Biggley.

Directing and choreographing the show is Tony and Emmy winner Rob Ashford who scored a hit with last year's revival of Promises, Promises. Will lighting strike twice? We will soon find out. By the way for those of you wanting to buy tickets to see this charming and funny musical you have come to the right place. Good seats are available for all performances. Not only that but if you call right now you can get them for below face value. This "Special Offer" is only good thru April 24 so don't delay. Rent To Return To New York This Summer

This is the best news I've heard all year. Now while the show was actually announced last fall the official dates were not announced until today. Previews are set to begin on July 14 with opening night scheduled for August 14th. Unlike the original production which ran for over 12 years and won 4 1996 Tony Awards including Best Musical this new production will open at New World Stages which is located Off-Broadway. Now a few years ago that would have been unheard of but due to the recent success of fellow Tony winners Avenue Q and The 39 Steps who also made the leap to Off-Broadway it has become the new thing. For one thing it is a whole lot cheaper to produce a show in a non-Broadway house. Plus by playing in a smaller venue you have a better chance of it enjoying a longer run. Not only but the prices are lower. Told you it was good news didn't I? As of now an on sale date for tickets has yet to be announced but you can be rest assured that when it does I will let you know. Until next time theatre fans.

Customer Story

Late in the day yesterday I received a call from one of our regular customers. She is a concierge for one of New York's most exclusive private clubs and calls at least three or four times a day to inquire about tickets to the hottest Broadway shows and other events in the city such as the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera. Anyway yesterday she called looking for tickets to see Geoffrey Rush in Diary of a Madam at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Care to guess where that venue is located? Why Brooklyn of course.

Now while we pride ourselves on never using the words "Sold Out" I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it. So anyway I decided to call the theatre and try my luck there. Well as expected the theatre was completely sold out too. What was I to do know? Well I guess I could tell my long time customer that there were no tickets available. Not if I could help it. So I decided to try one other place. The National Ticket Board.

For those of you not familiar with that term it is a ticketing system that lists tickets to all events in the U.S.that we here at Applause have access too.We use this option when we cannot get tickets from the box office or have run out of our own inventory. So anyway after a little research I was able to find two seats in the Orchestra a few seats off the aisle. Oh sure my client had to pay a little more than she had planned but the good thing is we were able to come thru with the tickets. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Get Tickets To See Mary Poppins For Below Face Value

Still haven't seen Mary Poppins yet? No I'm not talking about the movie silly. I'm talking about the Broadway show. Now in it's 4th year on Broadway Mary Poppins is one of Broadway's most popular shows. Not only that but it's one of the few shows that the whole family can enjoy. How many other shows can say that?

The show which first premiered in London in December 2004 where it was nominated for Best Musical of the Year losing to The Producers. Who do you think had a longer run? Mary Poppins of course. Now while I'm not the biggest Disney fan in the world I will say that the movie was and still is a personal favorite of mine.

Growing up as a child I must have watched the movie at least a hundred times or more. I guess you could say I liked it. So of course when they announced that they were bringing it to Broadway there was no way I was going to miss it. I take that back. As much as I loved the movie I wasn't sure if it would work on stage. Once again I was wrong.

Now was the stage version as good as the movie? I have to say it came pretty close. As much as I don't like Disney they never do anything without making sure it's absolutely perfect. Oh sure Tarzan and The Little Mermaid may not have been as successful like The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast but Disney isn't going anywhere. That's a fact.

Now I know you didn't come here for a history lesson on Disney so why don't I get to the reason for today's blog. To save you money. That's right. From now thru the end of April get tickets to see this beloved musical for prices that can't be beat. Good seats are available for all performances so don't delay. Call now. New Musical The Book Of Mormon Now In Previews

Calling all South Park fans. Now while I'm more of a Family Guy fan I have seen a few South Park episodes in my lifetime. Therefore I'm sure I will enjoy The Book Of Mormon. For those of you that are not familiar with South Park or The Book of Mormon it doesn't take a genius to figure out what it is about. That and that the fact that it is sure to offend Mormons as well as every other group. Oh who are we kidding? It's probably going to offend anybody who sees it. Doesn't mean it's not going to be funny. Here is a brief description about the show from the official website. "The Book of Mormon is about a pair of mismatched Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that's about as far away from Salt Lake City as you can get." Sounds like a winner to me. Now be advised that the show does contain explicit language so for those of you who don't care for stuff like that then The Book of Mormon may not be the show for you. For everybody else get on board and get your tickets today. Good seats are still available so don't delay. Call now. Get your tickets to see The Book of Mormon on Broadway.

Tickets For The The Motherf**ker With The Hat To Go On Sale This Week

That's right theatre fans. The show with the word in the title that you can't say on television is about to go on sale. Now it doesn't take a genius to figure out which word I'm talking about. The new play which from here on in I will refer as "The Hat" is set to begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 15 with opening night scheduled for April 11.

The show stars Bobby Cannavale (Jackie), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Veronica), Annabella Sciorra (Victoria), Yul Vazquez (Cousin Julio) and comic Chris Rock (Ralph D.)who will be making his Broadway debut. Directing the show is Tony winner Anna D. Shapiro who scored a huge hit three years ago with August:Osage County.

Here is a brief description of the show according to a production source. "Jackie and Veronica have been in love since the 8th grade. But now, Jackie is on parole and living clean and sober under the guidance of his sponsor, Ralph D, while still living and loving with his volatile soul mate Veronica who is fiercely loving, but far from sober. Still, their love is pure. And true. Nothing can come between them — except a hat."

Ever since the show was first announced several months ago we have gotten countless calls from people asking for tickets to the "Chris Rock Play". Now while he may be the main reason most will go to see the show there are other talented actor's involved as well as the play's author Stephen Adly Guirgis who has been a major force Off-Broadway for years now. Here's hoping the show is a big success and will encourage more new writers to try their luck on the Great White Way. Until next time theatre fans.

Customer Story

Really? Two customer stories in one week? I must have run out of things to blog about right? Not at all. It's just that helping customers is what we do here at Applause so what better subject to blog about then them. So here we go. Earlier this week I received a call from a very nice woman from Illinois. Well of course she's nice. She's from the Midwest after all. Anyway this charming resident of Hinsdale (That's a suburb of Chicago in case you didn't know) wanted to see if she could get tickets to some shows while she was here in March. I asked her what she wanted to see and of course she picked Wicked and Jersey Boys.

Just kidding. What? You mean there are other shows on Broadway beside those two? Well actually there are. In fact in come April there will be a total of 39 plays and musicals playing on the Great White Way. Anyway back to her choices. After all that's what today's blog is about. Care to guess what she wanted to see? I'll give you a hint. They are both well known revivals and both are headlined by two very well known actor's. That's right. How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying starring Harry Potter himself Mr. Daniel Radcliffe. And the other one? Right again. Anything Goes starring Broadway favorite Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney.

Oh and don't forget Tony and Oscar winner Joel Grey is in it too. See I told you they were well known didn't I? So now that I knew what she wanted to see it was time to find out when she wanted to go and where she wanted to sit. Since she was going to be here for a week she was pretty flexible on her dates which made my job a lot easier. Well after a little bit of research I was able to find her excellent seats for both shows. Not only that but I was able to get them for below face value. That's means she paid less then if she would went right up to the box office herself. So there you have it folks. Two great shows. Two amazing deals. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Disney On Broadway

Looking for the perfect show that the whole family can enjoy? Well look no further than Disney's The Lion King. Winner of six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical The Lion King is one of Broadway's most beloved shows of all time. Not to mention one of it's most successful. In fact since it opened at in November 1997 it has continued to rank in the top five grossing shows week in and week out. Not bad for a show that opened over thirteen years ago. Now those of you who read my blogs know how I feel about Disney. Now while I loved their movies when I was a kid I have no desire to see them brought to life on a Broadway stage.

That's just how I feel. However I know that without shows like The Lion King and Mary Poppins there would be fewer people coming to Broadway. That means fewer people buying tickets and I would be out of a job. Now you don't want that to happen do you? The truth is no matter how I feel Disney is good for Broadway. I mean let's face if it wasn't for them most kids might never have had the chance to experience one of the greatest things in the world. Seeing a Disney show was their first time to feel the magic that is live theatre. For that they should be commended. Let's face it. Disney is here to stay my friends. Not even I can change that. Until next time theatre fans.

Everybody Loves Billy

Can't guess which Billy I'm talking about? Why Billy Elliot of course. The show which won ten 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year is one of Broadway's most popular shows. Based on the 2000 Academy Award winning movie Billy Elliot takes place in a small town in London in the 1980's during the height of the miner's strike. Billy who struggles to find his place within his working class family soon discovers that his new found passion for dance is what makes him happy. Despite resistance from his father he does not give up his dreams of a better life for himself. Now believe it or not but I have never seen the show. Look I'm sure it's good. It didn't win all those awards for nothing. It's just not my type of show.

Maybe I'm just afraid that because there is so much hype I will be disappointed if the show is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. Same thing happened with Jersey Boys. I waited until almost two years after it opened for the same reason. Well as it turns out I was worried for nothing. I loved it. You know what? Maybe one of these days I will have to check out Billy Elliot. Who knows? I might even like it. Stranger things have happened. Now for those of you who want to see the show I have good news. From now thru March 27 you can get tickets to see this Tony winning musical at prices that can't be beat. Get your tickets to see Billy Elliot on Broadway. Who knows? Maybe I'll see you there. Until next time theatre fans.

There is No Better Time Than The Present To Get Tickets To See Jersey Boys On Broadway

Now in it's 5th record breaking year on Broadway is Jersey Boys. Winner of four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year. Not only is it one of Broadway's most popular shows but in theatres all around the world. Believe it or not but when the show was first announced over six years ago most people didn't expect it to be a hit. Myself included.

With the exception of Mamma Mia and Rock of Ages and most recently with Million Dollar Quartet and American Idiot "Jukebox Musicals" have not been what you would call successful. In fact since the concept first began in 1984 with the Broadway flop Leader of the Pack there have been less hits than misses. Kind of makes you wonder what the masterminds behind those disasters were thinking huh?

Thankfully the creators of Jersey Boys got it right this time. Now for those of you who have yet to see it, and by now I can't imagine there are to many of you left, there is no time like the present. Good seats are available for all performances so don't delay. Call now. Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. You will have the time of your life. I know I did.

See Broadway Bound Priscilla Queen Of The Desert For Below Face Value

A show about drag queens on Broadway? That will never work right? Wrong. How about a little show called La Cage Aux Folles. Winner of last year's Tony Award for Best Musical Revival and one of Broadway's most popular shows. Well what about the fact that the show features some of the biggest hits of the 70's and 80's. Hello?

Ever heard of Mamma Mia or Rock of Ages? Priscilla Queen of the Desert which is based on the 1994 cult film is not only one of this season's most highly anticipated new shows but continues to play to packed houses in the West End where it received a nomination for Best Musical of the Year. Previews for the Broadway production are set to begin at the Palace Theatre on February 28 with opening night scheduled for March 20.

Leading the cast are Tony nominee Will Swenson (Hair, Rock of Ages)) as Mitzi, Nick Adams (Guys and Dolls, La Cage Aux Folles) as Felicia, and Tony Sheldon who received a 2010 Olivier nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Now while I saw the movie when it first opened I don't remember that much about it except that I recall laughing quite a bit.

What can I say? Drag queens lip-syncing to "Shake Your Grove Thing" and "I Will Survive" is as good as it gets. By the way good seats are still available for all performances. In fact of you call right now you can get tickets to Priscilla for prices that can't be beat. This "Special Offer" is good right now thru April 18 so don't delay. Get your tickets to see Priscilla Queen Of the Desert. I guarantee it will have you dancing in the aisles.

See Broadway's Lombardi For Below Face Value This Spring

Still haven't seen Lombardi yet? Well there is no better time than right now. The show which opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre in October 2010 is based on When Pride Still Mattered:A Life of Vince Lombardi by Pulitzer-Prize winning author David Maraniss and takes place in 1965 over a period of a week in the life of football legend Vince Lombardi.

Now while reviews were good for the play the show struggled at the box office for the first couple of months. I like most thought the show was going to close in January. However the producers of the show have decided to continue despite it's low ticket sales. In fact it was recently announced the play would now run thru June 19.

Which incidentally is exactly one week after this year's Tony Awards. Believe it or not but there are seven new plays opening this season which is the most that I can recall in years. Can Lombardi hang on for the next four months with such stiff competition? We will soon find out. Until then why not see Lombardi for prices that can't be beat. From now thru April 10 good seats are available for below face value. Get your tickets to see Lombardi on Broadway. Go Packers!

Applause Theatre Service-Your Local Ticket Expert

Let's be honest. When it comes to purchasing tickets for a show in New York or any city for that matter there are hundreds of different companies you can call. We just happen to be one of them. So what makes Applause different from all of the rest? Well location for one thing. Applause Theatre Service is located right in the heart of Times Square. Technically we are in the theatre district but I think Times Square sounds cooler. How many other ticket companies do you know that you can go right up to the office and purchase tickets? Not too many my friends.

Now walk-up service is just one of the many things that sets us apart from the rest. I bet you didn't know that when you call most companies they are not even located in New York. Yes I know that's nothing new. I don't know about you but when I buy tickets I like to know where I'm sitting. Wouldn't it make sense to speak to someone who's actually been in the theatre before? I myself have been in every Broadway Theatre multiple times. Therefore I know the best place to sit. Not only that but I actually go to the shows.

Now I realize that my tastes may not be like everybody else. Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean you will. My job is to offer my opinion and let you decide for yourself. However I'm not going to recommend a show that I didn't like just so I can make a sale. Never have. Never will. How many other companies can say that? Look whether you order from me or another company is ultimately your choice. I just hope that when it comes time to make your decision you have done your homework and found what works best for you. It's your dollar.

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that when I moved to the big city over nineteen years ago that I would be spending my days and nights selling theatre tickets to other people. You see like most I came to New York to be an actor. Yet here I sit selling hundreds of tickets every day to travel agents, concierges, and total strangers.

I mean let's face it where else would I get the chance to share my knowledge and love for theatre on a daily basis? Certainly not as a waiter. Plus I get to blog about my opinions too. I'll admit that's my favorite part of the job. Well that and getting to see shows for free. How many jobs do you know offer a perk like that. Not too many my friends.

The thing is I love my job. How may people can say that? Not too many. So while I wait patiently for my big break I will continue to help people from all walks of life with all of their ticket needs. That’s not all. I am also here to answer any questions you might have about the greatest city in the world. After being here for nineteen years I have acquired a lot of knowledge about this great city of ours.

Don’t hesitate to call me with any questions you might have at 1-800-451-9930 or 212-307-7050. I don’t have an extension but since I am the only J. that works here I should be pretty easy to find. Tickets For Wonderland Now On Sale

That's right theatre fans. One of this season's most highly anticipated new shows is now on sale. Of sure you may not be as excited about Wonderland as I am but trust me if you heard some of the songs you might just change your tune. Believe it or not but in all the years that I have lived here I have never see a Frank Wildhorn musical. That's right. Not only did I not see Jekyll and Hyde but I missed all three versions of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Now besides the music the main reason I am dying to see the show is because of it's leading lady the one and only Janet Dacal. For those of you that are not familiar with her work you are in for a treat my friends. What a talent. Tickets for the show are now on sale. Better yet if you call now you can get tickets to see Wonderland for below face value. This special offer is good thru May 10 so don't delay. Get your tickets to see Wonderland on Broadway. London Production Of Dirty Dancing To Close This Summer

Sad news for all you fans of Dirty Dancing. And when I say fans I mean pretty much everyone in London and it's surrounding countries. Now while I loved the movie I wasn't sure how it was going to do considering it had opened almost twenty years after the movie had come out. Once again I was wrong. In fact ever since it premiered in October 2006 it has been one of the most popular selling shows in the West End. Not only that but it is the longest running show in the history of the Aldwhch Theatre. What can I say? The Brits love the 60's.

The show which will play it's final performance on July 9 will then embark on a national tour from September 1, 2011 thru October 8. Rumors have been spreading for years that the show would eventually come to Broadway since it's very successful North American tour that ran from May 2007-January 2009. My guess is no. Just because it was a hit one place doesn't mean it will be a hit on Broadway. Many productions over the years have tried and failed. I say leave it alone and be thankful for the success you have. Most shows don't even achieve that. Until next time theatre fans.

Rock Of Ages To Return To Broadway This Spring

Let me just start off by saying that I love Rock of Ages. How can you not? Great music. Hot girls in fish net stockings and a story that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. How many musicals can say that? For those of you who haven't seen it yet I just have one thing to say to you. What are you waiting for people? Now is the best time to get seats to see one of Broadway's coolest shows. The show which first premiered Off-Broadway in October 2008 before moving to Broadway in February 2009 is set to reopen at the Helen Hayes Theatre on March 24. By the way the Helen Hayes Theatre which seats 587 is Broadway's smallest theatre. That mean's there is not a bad seat in the house. Get your tickets to see Rock of Ages on Broadway. You will have the night of your life. I know I did.

More Bad News For Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark

Poor Spider-Man. That show just can't catch a break can it? Boo-hoo. As far as I'm concerned that show has it coming. Now while I did not care for the show I certainly feel for the actor's involved with the production. They are putting their lives not to mention their career's in danger. Yes the special effects are amazing. That is when they actually work. I'll admit that when the show was first announced back in 2006 I was intrigued. I mean who wouldn't be excited about a new musical featuring the music of Bono and The Edge.

I mean even if the show itself wasn't great at least the music would have to be amazing. It wasn't. As most of you know several critics reviewed the show last week even though the official opening night is not scheduled until March 15. Now most people don't think they should have done that and when I say most people I mean the producer's of the show. Were the reviews good? No. Will I think the show will close? Not right away. As of now the show does have a sizeable advance. However that will soon run out. My guess is it will be gone by Labor Day. We shall see.

So anyway now that I am finished with my Spider-Man rant of the week I guess I should get to the reason for today's blog. Today it was announced that the show was hit with two safety violations by the New York State Department of Labor. According to a source from the New York Times the violations were issued for accidents that occurred last year. Following the violation a spokesperson from the show issued a statement. "The productions in full compliance of Department of Labor guidelines and will continue to work with state officials to maintain the highest safety standards at all times." Oh the drama that is Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark. Until next time theatre fans.

American Idiot Wins Grammy For Best Musical Cast Album

Wait a minute. The Grammy's were on last night? How did I miss that? I mean it's not like they've been showing commercials on CBS everyday for the last two week's promoting the show. It's called sarcasm people. Of course I knew it was on last night. Now while I didn't watch the whole show I did see Lady Gaga's perform her new song " Born That Way". In case you didn't see it she was pretty amazing.

Although I will say I liked the song better when Madonna did it twenty years ago and it was called "Express Yourself." Who cares? The song is a hit and will sell millions of copies. Now for you those of you theater buffs who only watch the Grammy's to find out who won the Best Musical Cast Album of the Year you probably already know who it was. That's right. Everyone's favorite rock musical American Idiot. Also in the running last night were Fela!,A Little Night Music,Sondheim on Sondheim, and Promises, Promises.

Oh come on. Did you really think that the Grammy voters were going to pick Stephen Sondheim over Green Day? Get real. The show which opened to rave reviews last Spring is still packing them in at the St. James Theatre eight times a week on Broadway. Of course having Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong in the show certainly has something to do with that I'm sure. Don't forget you only have two more week's to see Billie Joe in the show so don't delay. Call now.

Customer Story

This week's customer story comes all the way from Fort Worth, Texas. Late on Saturday I received a call from a gentleman who called looking for tickets to see two shows next month. He had mentioned that a friend of his had used us in the past and we came highly recommended. I asked him what he wanted to see and of course he picked the two most popular shows on Broadway. Care to take a guess what two shows I'm talking about? Why Wicked and Jersey Boys of course.

So now that I know what he wanted to see it was time to find out when he wanted to see it and where he wanted to seat. Of course he picked one of the most popular not to mention craziest days in the city. That's right my friends. St. Patrick's Day. Now believe it or not but St. Patrick's Day is actually a perfect day to go to the theatre as most people will be out celebrating at their favorite watering hole as opposed to spending 2 1/2 hrs in the theatre. First up? Jersey Boys. Because of the holiday there was a lot of availability which means that it should be no problem to get excellent seats.

That's right. I got him great seats in the Front Mezzanine plus at at rate that was lower than he was seeing anywhere else. One show done. One to go. Once again I was able to get him very nice seats for Wicked in the Mid-Mezzanine.Now I know what you're thinking. Aren't those seats way in the back? Actually the first row of the Mid-Mezzanine overhangs Row T of the Orchestra which I know may sound far away but it is actually a great view. Plus it's cheaper. How much cheaper? Oh about $45-$50 cheaper. Well he loved that. So there you are folks. Two great shows. Two great savings. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Anything Goes Starring Tony Winners Sutton Foster And Joel Grey Now On Sale

Earlier today I posted a blog about the upcoming production of Sister Act The Musical where I mentioned Tony winner Sutton Foster and her rise to stardom since winning the Tony Award in 2002 for her breakthrough performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Well now it's time to talk about her latest production. That's right theatre fans. Broadway's favorite leading lady is set to return to the stage this Spring in the new Broadway revival of Anything Goes.

Joining her in this beloved Cole Porter classic is fellow Tony winner Joel Grey. The show which is being staged by two-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall is set to begin previews at the Stephen Sondheim on March 10 with opening night scheduled for April 7. Now while I personally am not familiar with the show it does feature some of Broadway's most popular songs like " I Get a Kick Out of You",You're the Top", It's De-lovely"and of course the title song "Anything Goes."

As of now the show is scheduled to run thru July 31 but if reviews are good and I expect they will be Anything Goes will be here for a long time. In fact besides the upcoming production of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying it is the only other revival opening this season. Weird right? Just last year alone there were six musicals vying for the Tony Award for Best Revival. This year it's a two-horse race. Guess we'll have to wait and see who gets the better reviews. Let the games begin.

Sister Act The Musical Now on Sale

I have to admit that when it was announced that the London production of Sister Act was coming to Broadway I wasn't that excited. My first thought was, "Here we go again. Another successful movie from the 90's turned into a big splashy Broadway musical." Be there. Done that. Now imagine my surprise when I turned into The View last week and saw a musical number from the upcoming show.

Now while the song itself didn't blown me away I can see why the producers chose to bring it's leading lady Patina Miller over from London to open the show. What a voice. Ms. Miller who will be making her Broadway debut in the leading role of nun on the run Delores Van Carter originated the role in the 2009 London production following a year long international search where she understudied the role during multiple productions in North America.

Sounds familiar doesn't it? A talented but unknown actress is plucked out of the chorus and became a star. Ding. Ding. That's right. 42nd Street. Now while there is no denying the similarity between the two I was talking about the story of another chorus girl turned leading lady. That's right. The one and only Miss Sutton Foster. You've all heard of her right?

Back in 2002 she too was floundering in the chorus of the Broadway bound Thoroughly Modern Millie when she was tapped to take over the leading role. Of course we all know what happened next. She won rave reviews and won the Tony Award that year for Best Actress in a Musical. By the way that show was produced by Whoopi Goldberg who also happens to be producing Sister Act.Will lighting strike twice? We shall see. Until next time theatre fans.

My friends and colleagues like to make fun of me because I don't have texting on my phone. Quite frankly I just don't like it. I realize I'm in the minority. That's just how I feel. Now for those of you who out there who prefer that option or those of you facebook fanatics who spend several hours a day talking to your friends I have something right up your alley. Boldchat. Never heard of it?

To be honest when my boss first mentioned it to me a couple of years ago I wasn't really sure what to expect. Having worked in this business for over twelve years now I have spoken to all types of people. Now while I spend most of my day talking to people on the phone I will admit that the idea of talking to people online sounding intriguing.

This way I could still talk to people on the phone and chat with people at the same time.Plus it allows the customers online to ask any question they want without having to pick up a phone. With this new system you can get the info you want and we can take your ticket request and complete it all in the same chat. Sounds good to me. Why don't you give it a try? Hey if I can learn to love you might too. Until next time theatre fans.

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker

Having been in the ticket selling business for almost thirteen years now I can honestly say I have seen it all. I've seen shows that got amazing reviews and yet struggled to find an audience. I've also seen shows that while maybe not my cup of tea run for years and years. So what is your favorite show? Now those of you who read my blogs know that Rent is still my all-time favorite show with the recently departed In The Heights a close second.

In fact Rent is scheduled to return this Summer Off-Broadway at New World Stages. Now of the current shows running I would have to say my favorites are Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages which is set to re-open at the Helen Hayes Theatre on March 24. If you haven't seen either one I highly suggest you do. In the next two months there are twenty-two news shows set to open. Fourteen of those are plays. When was the last time that happened?

Now when I first moved here musicals were what got me to the theatre. However with most new musicals being based on a movie or in Spider-Man's case a cartoon strip I am more likely to see a new play then some over the top musical. Now don't get me wrong. I enjoyed shows like The Addams Family and the new revival of La Cage Aux Folles. But it's nice to see something new and original again on Broadway instead of cartoon and movies turned into musicals.

Yes I know they have a place just like revivals do. That's the good thing about Broadway I guess. There is something for everybody.I mean let's face it there is no better feeling than sitting in a crowded theater waiting for the unexpected to begin. Over the years my favorites may have changed but one thing has not. My love for the theatre. That is forever. Live theatre. There is nothing like it. Until next time theatre fans.

That's right theatre fans. You only have eight more chances to see one of Broadway's hottest selling shows. The Merchant of Venice starring the one and only Al Pacino opened at the Broadhurst Theatre in November 2010 following a critically acclaimed production last Summer in Central Park. Now while it was sold out for it's initial 16 week run tickets have been a little easier to get for it's two week extension. Now Is The Best Time To See Jersey Boys On Broadway

Still haven't seen Jersey Boys yet? Quite frankly I didn't think there was anyone left on this planet who hadn't. Or at least in New Jersey. I mean I would think by now that every one in the Garden State has seen it at least five or six times by now. I myself have only seen it once so I guess I am in the minority. Of course I'm from New York so maybe that has something to so with it. All joking aside if you haven't seen Jersey Boys yet then there is no better time than right now my friends. In fact good seats are available for all performances thru the winter months.

What better way to stay warm then by seeing one of Broadway's hottest shows. Clever huh? They didn't hire me just for my looks. Now for those of you that are not familiar with the August Wilson Theater, the home of Jersey Boys, it is one of Broadway's smallest theatres. Only 1200 seats. That means there is not a bad seat in the house. I myself saw it from the last row of the Mezzanine on the side and had a perfect view. Therefore if I can see from there than so can you. Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. You will have the time of your life. I know I did.

See Tony Winner Billy Elliot For Below Face Value This Winter

Winner of ten 2009 Tony Awards is Billy Elliot. The show first premiered in the West End in 2005 is not only one of Broadway's most popular shows but also one of it's most profitable. In fact the show recouped it's entire investment of $18 million in a little over fourteen months. Not too bad for a show that I never thought would make it in the first place. Once again I was wrong. Trust me. It wasn't the first time and I can guarantee it won't be the last.

Now believe it or not but I have never seen the show It's just not my thing I guess. I'm sure Sir Elton John is not losing any sleep because I haven't seen the show. Now for those of you who still haven't seen it well you have come to the right place. From now thru March 27 you can get tickets to see this crowd favorite for prices that can't be beat. That Championship Season Featuring All Star Cast Begins Previews Tonight

That's right theatre fans. One of this season's most highly anticipated shows has begun. That Championship Season which is set to begin previews tonight at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre is scheduled to open on March 6. The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1972 features an all-star cast. Here is the line-up.

Brian Cox,Jim Gaffigan,Chris Noth,Jason Patric, and Kiefer Sutherland. See I told you it was all-star didn't I? As of the now the show is scheduled to run thru May 29 only but if reviews are good I expect it to extend. Now for those of you that are not familiar with the show here is a brief synopsis about the play from a production source.

"On the anniversary of their victory in the Pennsylvania state championship game, four members of the starting lineup of a small-town Catholic high school basketball team gather with their coach to re-live their youthful glory. As the night progresses, the long buried grudges and secrets of the once-confident players surface, threatening not just their solidarity, but the meaning of their victory. With savage humor, That Championship Season probes the darkest aspects of the American dream of success at all costs."

I for one can't wait to see this show. Expect this show to be a big contender come Tony time. Get your tickets to see That Championship Season on Broadway. Who knows? Maybe I'll see you there. Until next time.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark Reviews

I guess I must have been asleep because last time I checked it wasn't March 15 yet. Now for those of you who don't know what I am talking about everybody's favorite "Punching Bag" Spider-Man" Turn Off The Dark is scheduled to open that day. However several critics decided not to wait until then and posted their reviews yesterday. I can't say I blame them as February 7 was the original opening night.

Actually it was supposed to open in December then switched to January an then switched again to February but I digress. Anyway to everyone's surprise the critic's hated it. Well let's be honest the only people surprised were Julie Taymor and the producer's of the $65 million bomb. Even it's composers Bono and The Edge were smart enough to flee the country to avoid the backlash. Anyway on to the reviews. Enjoy. I know I did.

Customer Story

This week's customer story comes all the way from Monroe, Louisiana. Late in the day on Sunday I received a call from a lady who was planning a trip into New York in late March and wanted to see a show while she was here. I asked her if she had a show in mind and she had mentioned that she had seen Jersey Boys three times and while she loved it she was hoping to see something else. She mentioned that a friend of hers had recently seen Million Dollar Quartet in Chicago and loved it.

I told her that not only is it one of my favorite shows but also one of the best shows currently running on Broadway. I also told her that not only would I be able to get her excellent seats but also at a discount. Well she loved that. In fact I was able to get her great seats in the Front Mezzanine on the aisle. Who says you have to spend big bucks to get good seats? So anyway after I finished with her I got another call not five minutes later from her friend looking for the same date and the same deal.

I told her that I had just gotten off the phone with her friend so I should be able to get seats right nest to hers. Now wouldn't you know it but just as I was talking her information a call came in for me. Care to take a guess who it was? That's right. Another one of her friend's wanting tickets as well. By the time I was done I had sold a total of six tickets and all for below face value. So there you have it folks. Six satisfied customers. Will you be next?

A Day In The Life Of A Ticket Broker

As I come upon my 7th Anniversary at Applause I find myself wondering about the future of our business. Just last month fifteen shows closed. Now since January is considered a slow month that is not all that surprising. But fifteen? That is a lot more than usual. Can we recover and come back stronger than ever? I think we can. In fact if you look at Broadway’s December breaking records than I know we can and will into the foreseeable future.

However now is not the time to rest on our laurels and hope that theatre will continue to thrive as it has in the past. If you want theatre to survive than you have to support it. And I don’t just mean Broadway. New York City is home to over 100 Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway theatres. But what if you can’t come to New York? Thankfully there are other ways to see your favorite shows at a theatre near you.

From New York to San Francisco, to London to Toronto, Applause Theatre and Entertainment has access to shows and events nationwide and abroad. Will 2011 be as successful as 2010? To be honest I don’t know. What I do know is that there is no better feeling in the world than sitting in a crowded theatre, surrounded by total strangers, waiting for the lights to dim and the magic begin. Live theatre. There’s nothing like it!

Mary Poppins Winter Sale

That's right theatre fans. Now is the best time to see one of Broadway's most beloved shows and at prices that can't be beat. I am of course talking about none other than Mary Poppins. The show which opened on Broadway in fall 2007 is the perfect show for the whole family. Now while I may not be the biggest Disney fan in the world the movie will always hold a special place in my heart as it was a favorite of mine as a child.

In fact growing up I swear I must have seen it at least a hundred times. What child hasn't? Therefore I was pretty sure that I was going to like the stage production. Well guess what ? I didn't. I loved it and I know you will too. Like I said it's the perfect show no matter how old you are. How many shows on Broadway can say that nowadays?

Plus it is also one of the least expensive. How may shows can say that either. In fact if you call now you can get tickets to see Mary Poppins for below face value. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru April 16 there are a few blackout dates. * Get your tickets to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. It will make you feel like a kid again.

*March 11-18, 19 Matinee. April 13 Matinee and April 15-16.
