Disney On The Great White Way

And then there were two. That's right Disney fans. With Newsies set to close this Sunday there will only be two Disney shows on Broadway. Whatever will you do? Now let's be honest. The Lion King isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In fact the show which will celebrate it's seventeenth year on the Great White Way in just a few months continues to sell our week after week. Not too mention their other hit Aladdin which has grossed over a million dollars a week since it first premiered in March. Looks like it's not going anywhere either.

Now I 'll be the first to admit that I am not the biggest Disney fan in the world. The truth is it really doesn't matter what I think. I'm not the one buying tickets to see their shows. Although I sure am selling a lot of them. Since 1994 Disney has produced nine shows on Broadway. Some as we all know were a success like Beauty and The Beast, Mary Poppins, Aida and the aforementioned The Lion King. Then of course there is The Little Mermaid and Tarzan which to be honest were critical and financial failures. Now while those last two shows might have been good for the whole family they probably just didn't have the wide appeal that the more successful shows have.

That's probably why they didn't last very long. It just seems to me like they are running out of ideas. Dare I say they might want to consider doing something original.? I mean just because it was a hit movie doesn't necessarily mean that it will translate into big bucks at the box office. The truth is when you compare a twelve or thirteen dollar movie ticket to a Broadway ticket that is a hundred and thirty seven dollars you better make sure it's worth it. Disney has made some great movies over the years that are not animated musicals. Maybe it's time to try something new. After all The Lion King won't last forever. Until next time theatre fans.

Customer Story

Today's customer story comes from our neighbors up North. That's right. I am talking about Canada. Yesterday afternoon I received a call from a very nice gentleman who was planning a trip to New York with his wife next week and wanted to see a show while they were here. I asked him how he found us and he told me that we were listed in the New York Pass book. Now for those of you who aren't familiar with it the New York Pass is an all inclusive pass that offers discounts on museums, sightseeing tours, restaurants and of course theatre tickets. Anyway after finding out when they would be here I asked them what they wanted to see. Their first choice was Motown. Good choice don't you think? I know I would see it again. Now because they were going during the week I told them that I should be able to get them excellent seats and at a lower rate. Plus I told them that if they sat in the Front Mezzanine it would be a better view as they would be closer to the stage with the overhang. Thankfully they took my advice and I got them great seats. Not only that but they called me back two hours later and booked Aladdin as well. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Customer Story

Today's customer story comes all the way from "Sin City". No I am not talking about the movie. I'm talking about the great city of Las Vegas. Two days ago I received a call from a customer who came to us via his travel agent which suggested that he use us. You see? This is why we love agents. So anyway after finding out when he would be here I asked him what he would like to see. His two choices were On The Town and Pippin. Both revivals and both excellent choices I might add. I asked him where he wanted to sit for each show and he told me that if available he would love to get a seat as close and center as possible. I told him that since he was coming during a slow time it shouldn't be a problem not to mention the fact that he only needed one ticket. When all was said and done I was able to get him an excellent seast for both shows. Not only that but he called two days later and ordered tickets for Cabaret and this year's Tony Award winner for Best Musical A Gentleman's Guide To Love and Murder. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren To Star in The Audience Next Spring On Broadway

Great news theatre fans. It was just announced that Academy Award winner and two-time Tony nominee Helen Mirren will recreate her awarding performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience. The show which first premiered in the West End in 2013 is set to begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on February 17 with opening night scheduled for March 8. The limited engagement will run thru June 28.

Now besides selling tickets to all shows both On and Off-Broadway we do sell every show in London as well. In fact not only was The Audience one of our biggest sellers last year but we sold almost as many tickets for that show as we did Matilda or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and those are two of the hottest shows in London. I guess you could say people like Helen Mirren huh? Now for those of you who know nothing about the show here is a brief synopsis about The Audience from the show's website. Enjoy!

"For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses," press notes state. "The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen.

From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional — sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. In turn, the Queen can't help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases. These private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age, from the beginning of Elizabeth II's reign to today. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister."

O.K. so maybe brief wasn't the right word to describe the show. Although you have to admit it does sound interesting. Tickets for The Audience are expected to go on sale next month and I have no doubt that it will be one of the hottest selling tickets of the season. Be sure to check back here when they do. Get you tickets to see The Audience starring Helen Mirren. Expect the show to be a big contender at next years Tony Awards. Until next time theatre fans.

Revised Production Of Side Show To Open On Broadway This Fall

Can I just tell you how I excited I was when I heard that Side Show was coming back to Broadway? No I didn't start doing cartwheels in my office or jumping up and down. I think I'm a little old to be doing that. Plus I couldn't do a cartwheel to save my life. Now as most of you are aware the original production was for a better word a flop. Although it did manage to snag a few Tony nominations including Best Musical of the Year. The winner that year? The Lion King which is now in it's seventeenth year on Broadway. This new production which is set to begin previews at the St. James Theatre on October 28 is scheduled to open on November 17 and will be directed by Academy Award winning director and screenwriter Bill Condon (Chicago,Dreamgirls).

Now as much as I loved the show I never thought we would ever see it again on Broadway. Like I said it was a flop. Yet her we are almost fourteen years later and the show is coming back for a second shot at redemption. Let's hope things work out a little better this time around. Now I don't know about you but I think it has a pretty good shot of making it.  First of all they got great reviews when it played at the La Jolla Playhouse last year not too mention another production which just recently closed at the Kennedy Center in June. Plus according to the show's creative team the show now has a "darker approach and incorporates new songs as well as additional biographical details of the Hilton twins' life and historical figures of the era."

Makes you want to run out and buy a ticket right now doesn't it? Now while tickets are not on sale yet I would expect in an announcement in the coming weeks. Make sure to check back her when it does because we will be selling them. By the way for those of you that are not familiar with the show you might want to check this out. It will give you a better idea of what the show is about and you get to hear some great music at the same time. Get your tickets to see Side Show at the St. James Theatre on Broadway. Who knows? I might even see you there. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway Revival of Love Letters To Open On Broadway This Fall

Now let me just start off by saying that I know very little about Love Letters except that it is a two person play by A.R. Gurney that first premiered over twenty-five years ago. The show which first opened in New York Off-Broadway prior to moving to Broadway the following year will make it's return to the Great White Way this fall at the Nederlander Theatre. Now we all know that the only time a revival of a play decides to come back to Broadway is because it is usually set to feature a well known television or movie star. Makes sense to me. After all big stars equals big business and when it comes to this show the producers have made sure that there are plenty of big names to go around. Love Letters is set to begin previews on September 13 with opening night scheduled for September 18. What? Only five days of previews? Well considering they are reading letters for the whole show they probably don't need a whole lot of preview time. Here is a list of the actor's who will be performing in the show along with the dates that they will be in it.

September 13-October 10
Brian Dennehy & Mia Farrow
Oct. 11-Nov. 7
Carol Burnett & Brian Dennehy

Nov. 8-Dec. 5
Alan Alda & Candice Bergen
Dec. 6, 2014-Jan. 9, 2015
Stacy Keach & Diana Rigg
Jan. 10-Feb. 1
Anjelica Huston & Martin Sheen

Quite the line up don't you think? By the way for those of you that are not familiar with the show here is a brief synopsis about the show from the play's website. back to Broadway featuring some of
Love Letters, according to press notes, is a "disarmingly funny and unforgettably emotional portrait about the powerful connection of love. Two friends, rebellious Melissa Gardner and straight-arrow Andrew Makepeace Ladd III have exchanged notes, cards and letters with each other for over 50 years. From second grade, through summer vacations, to college, and well into adulthood, they have spent a lifetime discussing their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, and victories and defeats. But long after the letters are done, the real question remains: Have they made the right choices or is the love of their life only a letter away?"

As of now the show is only on sale thru February 1 but I'm sure if reviews are good and they can keep a rotating cast of stars it could continue much longer. Sounds like a pretty sweet gig to me. Come in for a month and head off to your next project. Not to mention collecting a nice little salary for reading a bunch of letters for a couple of hours a night. Now that's what I call a dream job. Tickets are expected to go on sale in the next couple of weeks so make sure to check back here when they do. Get your tickets to see Love Letters on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Customer Story

Today's customer story comes all the way from the "Lone Star" state. That's right. I am talking about the great state of Texas. Lubbock to be exact. This past Friday I received a call from a travel agent who's client was heading over to London next week and wanted to see a show while he and his family were there. His first and only choice was The Book of Mormon. Perfect family show don't you think? O.K. so maybe it's not The Lion King or Wicked but you have to admit it is pretty entertaining and after all isn't that why we go to the theatre in the first place? So anyway after a little research I was able to get them some excellent seats in the Mezzanine and at a price that was lower than they had seen anywhere else. Another satisfied customer. Wait a minute. Not so fast. They weren't done.

Less than two hours later the agent called me back because they wanted to see something else. Another show perhaps? No they wanted to go to a game. Not just any game mind you but a football game featuring one of London's premier teams the Arsenal Football Club aka The Gunners. Now I know what you're thinking. I thought Applause only sold theatre tickets for London. Now while most of our tickets in London are for the theatre we do sell other events too including all major sporting events. Who knew? Anyway after contacting our regular ticket seller in London I was able to secure club seating for the event. Oh sure it was a little more than The Book of Mormon tickets but if you want the best seats then you've got to pay the big bucks. So there you have it folks. Two great events with great seats to boot. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Charity Begins At Work Too

Many of us open our mailboxes each day and find various letters from charities asking us for donations. For myself and my family, we generally sit down once a month and simply write out a check for several organizations that are in need while paying our bills. It’s easy to do and makes you feel good at the same time too. In 1987 I co-founded my own ticket agency called Applause Theatre Service in New York City. We cater to the ticket needs of consumers, hotel concierge, corporations, tour operators and travel agencies all over the world.

About nine years ago I joined an industry trade organization called NATB, which stands for the National Association of Ticket Brokers. Although I joined NATB so that I could keep my little company aware of ongoing concerns in my industry, I was amazed at how much thought was being put into charitable efforts within this organization. For the past several years I have had the pleasure of working with this group of ticket brokers with a very important charitable effort.

It’s called NATB Gives Back. The program is the NATB’s way of having these ticket broker companies, staff and family members “give back” to the local communities that support our businesses. And what a great organization it is. In 2009 the NATB Gives Back launched it's first partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities. Since that time we have provided tickets to preseason games for both the New York Giants and New York Jets to hundreds of families thru this great program.

To all of our fellow ticket brokers who have contributed tickets, volunteer time at a Ronald McDonald House, served on one of our committees or made any kind of contribution to the NATB Gives Back Program, we are forever grateful to you. To those who might want to help us with these charitable efforts in the future, we would appreciate any ticket donations or volunteer time you might be able to give us in the days ahead. Every minute counts.
