Blue Man Group

Blue Man GroupAugust 17, 1991 Care to guess what happened on that date? Believe it or not but on that date Blue Man Group opened Off-Broadway at the Astor Place Theatre. That's over twenty-six years for those of you mathematicians out there. A few months after moving to New York I had the opportunity to see the show for the first time. To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect. The truth is up until that point the my Broadway experience was limited to shows like Miss Saigon and Crazy For You.

Both good shows, and both housed at very large theatres as well.  So imagine my surprise when I headed down to the village to see this tiny little show in the East Village. Cut to an hour and forty minutes later and I couldn't believe my eyes. What a fantastic night in the theatre. Cut to twenty-five years later and I got to see the show once again.

Now I know what you're thinking. Is the show just as good as it was back then? No. It was better. Who would have thought? Now for those of you who still haven't see the show I have some great news. We sell it. Not only that, but it is now possible to get tickets to see the show at some incredible rates Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru October 1, it for select seats, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see Blue Man Group at the Astor Place Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

The Band's Visit, which won two Lucille Lortel Awards, including Outstanding Musical, will begin previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on October 7, with opening night scheduled for November 9.

Based on the award winning 2007 film, The Band's Visit tells the story of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Band, who are hired to play at the opening of a new cultural center in Israel. Shortly after their arrival, they discover that not only have their hosts not arrived, but they are in the wrong place, with no transportation and no place to stay.

The show, which is being directed by David Cromer (Our Town), features a score by Tony nominee David Yazbeck (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.), and a book by Itamar Moses. King Kong Musical Headed To The Great White Way

Image resultOh come on. You knew it was going to happen eventually. After all they made a musical out of Spider-Man didn't they? Granted the show was a huge flop, despite running for over three years.

King Kong, which first premiered at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne Australia in June 2013, is set to open on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre in the Fall of 2018.

The show, which was co-written by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child author Jack Thorne, has had quite the journey since it's premier down under.

Since that time the show has gone thru multiple writer's and directors. Hopefully this new creative team can come together and make the show a hit. As of now no on sale date has been announced. Stay tuned to this website for more information. Until next time theatre fans.

Review of 'War Paint' by Ed Katz 5-21-17

Broadway has had a great season for musicals but only four shows were nominated for Best Musical.

One that many people thought would be nominated- but wasn't- is 'War Paint.' The creative team is remarkably talented: book writer Doug Wright has won many awards- including a Pulitzer Prize- and the music and lyric team of Scott Frankel and Michael Korie were nominated for several awards for 'Grey Gardens.' Choreographer Chris Gattelli and Director Michael Greif are both multiple award winners and Michael Grief has directed 'Rent,' 'Grey Gardens,' 'Next to Normal' and this season's superb 'Dear Evan Hansen.'

Now add two legendary megawatt stars in Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole and you have all the ingredients for a huge hit, right? Well, it doesn't get any better than that- on paper, at least.

And, even besides all the talent involved, there is much to recommend in 'War Paint.' It is the story of dueling women's cosmetics legends, Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden; how they rose to fame and fortune- and what they sacrificed to make it. (I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say they both sacrificed love.)

The story has some sharply realized moments as well as some witty dialogue including several great zingers delivered perfectly by Patti Lupone.

An example is when she recounts being rejected by a tenant board in a posh New York City apartment building because she was Jewish. When asked, "So what did you do?," she coolly replies, "I bought the building."

But the story lags in spots, bringing the energy level down. And it is one thing to have two legends singing the songs- but most of the music is unexceptional. As is the choreography. And I was not the only one who had difficulty deciphering Patti Lupone's heavy German immigrant accent as Helena Rubinstein, particularly in Act One. I'm not sure if it was the audio engineer's fault on the night I saw it- and it did seem better in Act Two- but several people remarked they also missed some dialogue because her accent was just too hard to understand.

David Korins' scenery and Catherine Zuber's costumes are first rate and they both earn their award nominations as the sets and costumes do a great job of enhancing the atmosphere and setting the scenes as the story goes from the 1930's to the 1960's.

And both Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole are Best Actress nominees.

So, because the whole show doesn't fully connect, I give 'War Paint' 3 stars out of 5.  Again, this has been a great season for musicals so there are many to choose from. 'War Paint' did receive 4 Tony Award nominations and it does have several entertaining scenes- plus the big added draw that it's a rare chance to see two Broadway legends performing on the same stage. All of the sheer talent involved in this production provide many reasons to see the show.

And you know where you can get the best tickets: Applause Theater & Entertainment Service, 800.451.9930, or online at www.applause-tickets.com.

1984 Now In Previews

1984That's right theatre fans. The 2017-2108 Broadway season has officially begun. 1984, which opened in London last year to rave reviews, begins performances tonight at the Hudson Theatre, with opening night scheduled for June 22. Now for those of you that don't know, the book, which was written by George Orwell, was published in 1949.

That's thirty-five years before the year in which the story takes place for those of you keeping count. Now I have never read the book. Nor have I seen the 1956 film. That doesn't mean I don't want to see it though. In fact I do. Very much. I wonder how I will get tickets to see it? Just kidding.

Now for those of you like me who wish to see the show, I have some great news. We sell it. Plus if you call us right now we can get you tickets to see the show at some amazing rates. Be advised the while this "Special Offer" is good thru July 2, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see 1984 on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre. Theatre Announced For Broadway Revival Of Once On This Island

That's right theatre fans. The first Broadway revival of Once On This Island has found a home. The show, which began Off-Broadway at Playwright's Horizon in May 1990, before transferring to Broadway in October of that year, will begin previews at the Circle In The Square Theatre on November 9.

Opening night is scheduled for December 3. Now I love the show. Unfortunately it closed a few weeks before I moved here, so I never got to see it. You better believe I won't miss it this time around.

Tickets for the ninety minute musical are now on sale. Not only that, but we are selling them. Get your tickets to see Once On This Island on Broadway at the Circle In The Square Theatre. Who knows? You might just see me there. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway For The Whole Family

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryHeading to New York City with your family in the coming months? Well of course you are going to see a show or two while you're here right? Of course you are. The only question is what to see? As we speak there are currently thirty-four shows playing on Broadway.

Now I have been working in the ticket industry for almost two decades. Which means, I have sold tickets to hundreds of different shows. Therein lies the problem. Not all of them are what I what I would call "Family Friendly".

Now the truth is what I think may be inappropriate for some, seem fine for most. Perfect example. Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon. Two shows that aren't exactly for the younger generation.

Yet both have been running for many years with no end in sight. What can I say? The people want what they want. Now instead of listing every show I have decided to list the ones that are well, once again, "Family Friendly". Enjoy!

Aladdin

The Lion King
Anastasia

Cats

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Kinky Boots

Miss Saigon

On Your Feet

School of Rock

The Lion King

The Phantom of the Opera

Wicked

Quite the list don't you think? Oh and did I mention that we sell tickets for all of these shows? Not only that, but most of those are available at some incredible prices as well. Also don't forget that Applause is open seven days a week. 365 days a year. That means we are always here to help with all of your ticket needs. So why not give you a try? You'll be glad you did. Tony Winner Idina Menzel To Return To The Stage

What a way to start off my Tuesday morning. It was just announced, that Tony winner and recording star Idina Menzel, is headed to the New York stage for the first time since her Tony nominated performance in If/Then. Skintight, the new play by Significant Other playwright Joshua Harmon, will have it's world premier next Spring at the Laura Pels Theatre.

The show, which is to be directed by Daniel Aukin (Bad Jews, Fool For Love), will begin previews on May 31, 2018, with opening night scheduled for June 21. So what exactly is the show about? Well according to a production source,  "Skintight tells the story of Jodi Isaac, a divorcee with a 20-year-old son who discovers her famous father is in a relationship a with Trey, who’s also 20, and possibly gay. And possibly an adult film star.

Skintight assays the nature of love, the power of attraction, and the ways in which a superficial culture persists in teaching its children that all that matters is what’s on the inside. Now I don't know about you, but it is a little hard to picture Idina Menzel with a twenty-year old kid. Then I remembered that she was in her mid-twenties when Rent opened on Broadway. Which by the way was twenty-one years ago. Now I feel old. Tickets for the show are scheduled to go on sale later this year. Stay tuned to this site for future updates. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway's School Of Rock Recoups

School of RockThat's right theatre fans. School of Rock is officially a hit. Not that it wasn't a hit already. After all the show has been one of the top grossing shows on Broadway since it first premiered in November 2015. Not only that, but the show has earned over eighty-million dollars at the box office since that time, as well as breaking box office records this past December.

Now here we are a year and a half since it's premiere, and the show as officially recouped it's entire fifteen million dollar investment. In fact except for Hamilton and Waitress, it is the only other musical from the 2015-2016 season that has accomplished that amazing feat. By the way for those of you who want tickets to see School of Rock, you are in luck.

We sell it. Not only that, but if you call right now you can get tickets to see the show at prices that can't beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru June 4, it is for select seats, and as always subject to availability. London Production Of Dreamgirls Headed To Broadway

Dreamgirls TicketsExciting news theatre fans. One of Broadway's most beloved musicals is headed back to the stage. Dreamgirls, which first premiered on Broadway in 1981, opened to rave reviews last November at the Savoy Theatre in London.

The show, which stars television star Amber Riley, (Glee, Dancing With The Stars) is scheduled to open on Broadway sometime in the Spring of 2018. As of now it hasn't been announced if Ms. Riley will recreate her critically acclaimed performance.

However based on her reviews, it would be foolish on the producers part not to allow her the chance to make her Broadway debut in the role of Effie White. Fingers crossed. So far no theatre, or performances dates have been announced. Stay tuned to this blog for future updates. Until next time theatre fans.

Tony Award Nominated Best Musicals of 2017-Need Tickets For Broadway?

Today's blog post is a look into this season's Tony Award nominated Best Musicals and Best Musical Revivals of 2017.  And it is a terrific group of exciting productions for sure.  Kindly let me introduce them to you one by one.

The first one is Dear Evan Hansen, a modern day story about a high schooler named Evan Hansen, who although feeling mostly ignored by his peers and suffers from social anxiety, finds himself in the middle of a storm when another student takes his own life.  Apparently Evan Hansen has painted a picture that he was close friends of the student, which leads to Evan's sudden rise in popularity.  Dear Evan Hansen is a profound story which really makes people think about the often "quiet difficulties" that teenagers go through while growing up.  Dear Evan Hansen plays 8 performances weekly at New York's Music Box Theatre in New York City.  I think this show will win the Tony Award for 2017 Best Musical.  Ben Platt should win the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical playing the role of Evan Hansen.  The show has received 9 Tony Award nominations.

Come From Away is another exciting new musical.  The show is set in the week that follows the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and shares the story of 38 airplanes that were diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland in Canada.  7000 stranded passengers were greated warmly by the local people of this town where they were cared for, housed and fed.  Although the story takes place at an extremely difficult time in our history, the clear picture of how wonderfully warm and friendly our society truly is runs throughout every moment of this terrific inspiring and uplifting new muscial.  Come From Away has been nominated for 7 Tony Awards in 2017, including Best Musical.  Jenn Colella has been nominated for
Best Featured Actress in a Musical.  The show is planning on another production to play in Toronto in Februry 2018.

The third musical nominated for the Best Musical of 2017 is Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet.  The show has been playing since November 2016 at the Imperial Thetre in New York City after two previous runs in smaller venues in 2012 and 2013.  I saw it in a tent Off Broadway in New York City's Meatpacking District and it was a great deal of fun indeed.

The show takes place in 1812 Moscow just prior to Napolean's invasion of Russia and before the burning of the city.  Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet is based on Volume 2, Part 5 of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel War and Peace.  This 70 page section of the book centers on beautiful, young Natasha, who is visiting Moscow while waitng for her fiance Audrey to return from war.  Natasha, in a moment of indescression, has an affair with Anatole and her expected place in high society is ruined. Anatole is already married and is Pierre's cousin. Pierre is a wealthy, middle aged aristocrat, who tries to direct Natasha toward redemption as he, himself searches to overcome his loneliness and search for his true life's meaning.  The Imperial Theatre has been completely redone to look like an oppulent Russian salon and gives a unique perspective to theatergoers from every vnatage point.

Dave Malloy wrote the Book, Music and Lyrics for the show.  Singer Josh Groban stars in the show through July 2, 2017.  The show is 2 hours and 40 minutes long with 1 intermission.  Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet has been nominated for 12 Tony Awards, the most for any show this season including Best Musical.

The 4th musical being covered in this post is on Groundhog Day The Musical.  The show is based on the film written by Harald Ramis in 1993.  It is a musical comedy with a fun story.  A Pittsburgh televison weatherman named Phil Connors is asked to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  The less than friendly Mr. Connors gets caught in a "time loop" where every day is the same as the day before.  The show is just the type of fun filled time at the theater that audiences will enjoy for a long time to come.

Music and Lyrics have been written by Tim Minchin (Matilda The Musical) with a Book written by Danny Rubin.  Andy Karl, a Broadway regular, stars along with a terrific cast or talented actors that aim to please every moment of the show.  I'm looking forward to seeing it again.  Groundhog Day The Musical is nominated for 7 Tony Awards this season and won London's Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2017.

Although the 4 shows listed above are all nominated for Best Musical of 2017, I thought it most important to mention this years Best Musical Revival category which includes Miss Saigon, Falsettos and this season's mega hit revival of Hello Dolly!, starring Bette Midler.

Falsettos is a combination of 3 shows, Falsettos, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland.  The show has closed several months ago and told the story of a modern day family which includes the father Marvin, his gay lover Whizzer Brown, Marvin's ex-wife Trina, his teenage son Jason, his psychiartist Mendel and 2 neighbors, Charlotte and Cordelia.  Although this modern family is going through big changes, Marvin is committed to making sure that everyone will be allright.  The musical has a Book written by James Lapine and William Finn.  Mr. Finn wrote the Music and Lyrics as well.  Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells and Stephanie J. Block were the stars of this fun musical.

Miss Saigon's revival is a great one indeed.  The musical is written by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil with Lyrics by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. and is based on Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly.  The show centers on the unlikely romance between an Asian bargirl and an American GI around the time of the fall of Saigon in the 1970's.    This Broadway production stars Eva Noblezada, Jon Jon Briones and Alistair Brammer.  Miss Saigon tickets are on sale through January 14, 2018 with reduced prices by going through our company Applause-Tickets.

This years show most likely to win the Best Musical Revival cate
gory is the runaway hit Hello Dolly!, starring Bette Midler.  Ms. Midler plays the role of Dolly Levi, a middle-aged widow who decides to start living her life again.  She lives life to the fullest by spending her time by matchmaking, meddling in the lives of others and looking for opportunity at each and every turn.  An opportunist to say the least.

Hello Dolly! is based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 novel called The Merchant of Yonkers, which although originally unsuccessful, was retitled and called The Matchmaker in 1955.  That's when the the story begins to achieve some pretty striking success in the arts world.

In 1964, David Merrick produced the musical stage version of Hello Dolly!  With Music and Lyrics written by Jerry Herman with a book by Michael Stewart, Hello Dolly! went onto win 10 Tony awards. Coincidentally, Hello Dolly! has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2017.  The 1964 production had won 10 Tony Awards and became a record on Broadway which lasted for 37 years until The Producers, starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, broke the record in 2001.  Barbra Streisand starred in the film version of Hello Dolly! in 1969.  The film was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, winning 3 of them.

Amélie To Close

AmélieThat's right theatre fans. The first casualty from this year's Tony nominations has found it's first victim. Amélie, which is based on the 2001 film, will play it's final performance at the Walter Kerr Theatre on May 21. When it closes, it will have played a total of twenty-seven previews, and fifty-six regular performances.

Now while the show received mix reviews, I thought it might have a chance of sticking around due to the popularity of it's star, Tony nominee Phillipa So (Hamilton). However after it received zero Tony nominations, the writing as they say, was on the wall.

Now for those of you who still want to see the show, there is still time. Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets at prices that can't be beat. Get your tickets to see Amélie at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway. Until next time theatre fans.

The Bronx is Blooming at the New York Botanical Garden!

The 2017 Tony Nominations have been announced, so there is so much to see and do in NYC right now.  We'll help you with your Broadway show requests.  Call us anytime.

But in the meantime... May I suggest something you may find worthwhile doing, during the daytime. I certainly did at the Botanical Garden.  Since I am a member, I do go quite frequently.  But this time, I'm going to rant and rave about what I saw!

This past weekend, I went to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx (my home,  and of course, home of the New York Yankees The New Botanical Garden is a 250 Acre National Historic landmark landscape, with 50 gardens and some wonderful seasonal events and nature's growth ...  Currently,  there are thousands of different varieties of daffodils, lilac trees in blues, pinks, and lavender color, the azaleas garden and flowering trees such as cherry blossoms and magnolias, to name a few!!  This is worth the trip alone.

Although the blooming was spectacular, I was even more excited to see a Dale Chihuly exhibit.  This beautiful exhibit is going on now through October 22nd. . Explore Art and Glass in Nature with Chihuly!  Dale Chihuly is the world renowned artist who's works of glass art are exhibited all around the world.

His glass works are spread out throughout the gardens and conservatory. There are over 50 pieces to see.  A picture is worth a thousand words… In this case, several of the pictures I took can be worth a thousand words and then some.. I hope you enjoy them and try to get there.  And best of all, it’s only a subway ride away! Take the B or D or 4 line.

(Note: there is a fee or become a member and enjoy the gardens all year round and I suggest you go during the week.  Weekends are very very busy.)

Regards,
Phyllis

See Broadway Production Of Beautiful For Less

Beautiful: The Carole King MusicalStill haven't seen Beautiful yet? Well what are you waiting for people? There is no better time than right now. The show, which tells the true story of music legend Carole King and her rise to fame, is now in it's fourth year on Broadway. Now prior to seeing the show, I wasn't all that familiar with her work except for two or three songs.

So imagine my surprise, when I discovered that she is responsible for sixty songs including, " Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "The Loco-Motion", "I'm Into Something Good", "One Fine Day", and many, many more. Who knew? What an amazing show. Now for those of you who still haven't seen the show, I have some incredible news to share with you.

It is now possible to get tickets for Beautiful at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru September 3, it is not good for Saturday matinee performances, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see Beautiful on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. You will love it. Until next time theatre fans.
