My Top Ten Shows Of 2019

Image result for top ten logo
Where oh where has the time gone? Can you believe that the year is almost over? I sure can't. Which brings me to today's blog. Every year, numerous publications like Time Magazine and the New York Times, publish their year end lists of their favorite theatre shows.

Therefore, I figured I would share with you my favorite productions from this year. Also note that this list is not limited to only shows that opened this year, but simply a list of ones that I have seen in 2019. Enjoy!

Ain't Too Proud - Let me just start off by saying that I am a huge Temptations fan. HUGE! Which is why it will surprise you, that I was a little skeptical when the show was first announced.
The truth is, when it comes to jukebox musical's they are usually hit or miss. For every Mamma Mia and Rock of Ages, there is an Escape To Margaritaville or The Cher Show. Well of course as it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. It was amazing.

Beetlejuice - Now I might be over exaggerating, but I swear I am probably the only person who has never seen Beetlejuce, Well at least that's how I felt while sitting in the Wintergarden Theatre a few months ago. I mean clearly everyone that was there that evening, were huge fans of the film. Thankfully not seeing the film, worked to my advantage. I loved it. In fact, I've seen it twice since that night.

Tootsie - I just have to say it. Tootsie is the greatest film comedy of all time. And the Broadway musical? I have not laughed that much at at Broadway show in years. So why is it closing in seven days? I haven't a clue.

Hadestown - I'll be honest. I spent the first six month's of the shows run not wanting to see it. Why you ask? Well the truth is, I tend to stay away from shows that have so much hype. That way I'm not disappointed when it doesn't live up to my expectations. Long story short, I saw the show in October. Now besides being worried that I might not enjoy it, I was literally soaked from the monsoon that took over New York that day. So basically the last thing I wanted to do was sit in a theatre for two and half hours. Now I know what you're thinking? Was I right to be a little hesitant? The answer is no. It is hands down of the most enjoyable nights in the theatre that I have had in years. There I admit it. I was wrong.

Rock of Ages - This past July I saw this show. It was my seventh time. Enough said.

A Christmas Carol - My favorite Ebeneezer Scrooge is Albert Finney. After seeing this lovely production, I would list Campbell Scott as a close second. It has been rumored that the show will be returning again next year. If you happen to find yourself in New York in December 2020, I highly suggest you don't miss it.

Kinky Boots - O.K. I have to cheat a little with this pick. The truth is I didn't actually see a live production of this show. Thankfully there is this little thing called PBS, that broadcasts Broadway and West End shows. This was the London production, and it was fantastic. It actually made me wish that I had seen the Tony Award Broadway production.

Mamma Mia - Now I know what you're thinking. Didn't Mamma Mia close on Broadway four and a half years ago? Yes it did. This production was a little east of New York City. Paris, Illinois to be exact. Also known as my hometown. Now the truth is, I avoided the show during it's fourteen year run. Trust me. I had my reasons. Who would have thought that a production directed by my best friend would make me fall in love with it?

A Musical About Star Wars - I love Star Wars. And guess what? I loved this too. A must see for any Star Wars fan.

So there you have it. My "Top 10" theater picks of 2019. Wait a minute. Not so fast. If you do a quick count, I only listed nine shows. What can I say? I had other things going on I guess. Or maybe there were only nine shows that I enjoyed. I guess you'll never know. Until next time theatre fans.

The Phantom Of The Opera Winter Sale

The Phantom of the OperaStill haven't seen The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway? Well what are you waiting for people? I mean it's only been playing for almost thirty-two years after all. Growing up in a small town in Illinois, I wasn't exposed to a lot of theatre, except for the shows I did in high school and the local community theatre.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard the cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera for the first time? Well as you have probably guessed, I loved it. In fact, I think I wore out my cassette. Yes that's right. I said cassette. Anyway, cut to almost five years later, and I finally got to see the show on Broadway for the first time.

Now I know what you are thinking. Did the show live up to my expectations? You better believe it did. Now here we are twenty-seven years later, and I'm still blogging about it. How crazy is that? Now for those of you who want tickets to see this beloved musical, you have come to the right place. We sell it. Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets to see it at prices that can't beat.

Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru February 14, 2020, it is not good for Saturday evening performances, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see The Phantom on the Opera on Broadway at the Majestic Theater on Broadway. You will love it. Until next time theatre fans.

New Tracy Letts Play The Minutes Is Now On Sale

The MinutesOne of my favorite theatrical experiences of the last fifteen years, was the Broadway premier of August: Osage County. The show, which won five 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Play of the Year, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, played for a total of six hundred and forty-eight performances, and eighteen previews.

Now I know what you're thinking. What does this have to do with today's blog? Well as it turns out, the author of August: Osage County, is also the same author as The Minutes, which is set to begin previews at the Cort Theatre on February 25, 2020.

The show, which also stars Tony Award winners Jessie Mueller and Blair Brown, Tony Award nominees Austin Pendleton and K.Todd Freeman, will officially open on March 15, and play thru June 14. Now as I mentioned, tickets for the show are now on sale. Not only that, but we are selling it. Get your tickets to see The Minutes on Broadway at the Cort Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Image result for to kill a mockingbird broadway logoWow. Broadway Revival Of The Music Man Finds It's Home

The Music ManLet me just say that while I am looking forward to the upcoming revival of The Music Man, I am not exactly thrilled with it's choice of theatres. Now don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with the Winter Garden Theatre. It's just that I feel bad for the cast and crew of Beetlejuice, who in case you haven't heard are being forced out to accommodate The Music Man. That's show business I guess.

Anyway, previews for the highly anticipated musical are set to begin on September 9, 2020, with opening night scheduled for October 15, 2020. The show, which is being directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks (Hello Dolly), and choreographed by Tony Award winner Warren Caryle, is set to star Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman as con-man Harold Hill and two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as librarian Marian Paroo.

Featuring such classic songs like "Seventy-Six Trombones", "Till There Was You", "Shipoopi", "My White Knight", "(Ya Got) Trouble", "Gary, Indiana", The Music Man, also stars a quartet of Tony Award winners in the form of Jefferson Mays as Mayor Shinn, Jayne Houdyshell as Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, Shuler Hensley as Marcellus Washburn and Marie Mullen as Mrs. Paroo.Quite the cast don't you think? Now for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you have come to the right place. We sell it. Get your tickets to see The Music Man on Broadway at the Wintergarden Theatre. Expect the show to be a big contender at the 2021 Tony Awards. Until next time theatre fans.

Starring alongside the dysfunctional couple is Russell Tovey, and 2019 Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran.

Now for those of you that are not familiar with the show, here is a brief synopsis to tell you a little more. Set over the course of one evening, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, tells the story of long suffering married couple George and Martha, who spend the evening entertaining George's fellow colleague Nick and his wife Honey at their home.

As day turns into night, alcohol, not too mention some hidden secrets soon turn both couples world's upside down. Now that sounds like my type of show. To Kill A MockingbirdThat's right theatre fans. One of last season's biggest hits, is now available at some incredible savings. To Kill A Mockingbird, which will celebrate it's one year anniversary on Broadway later this week, currently stars Academy Award winner Ed Harris in the role of attorney Atticus Finch.

The show, which was adapted by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin, and directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, is the highest grossing non-musical production in Broadway history. Now as I mentioned, To Kill A Mockingbird in now available at prices that are lower than they have ever been.

Broadway Smash Ain't To Proud Now On Sale Thru November 2020

Ain't too proudI'll be the first to admit, that when it was announced last year that they were working on a new musical about The Temptations, I was a little weary. Don't get me wrong. I love The Temptations.

In fact, they are my favorite musical group of all time.Which is why I was concerned that they might screw it up. Well as it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. What a fantastic night in the theatre. Now going in, I was well aware of their story.

However, the thing that impressed me the most was any time a tragedy occurred to one of them, it was as if I was hearing about it for the very first time. Now that is great storytelling my friends.

Now for those of you who still haven't seen the show, you have come to the right place. We sell it. Not only that, but tickets for this award winning musical are now on sale thru November 29, 2020. Get your tickets to see Ain't Too Proud on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. You will love it. Until next time theatre fans.

Harry Connick Jr. - A Celebration Of Cole Porter To Begin Performances Next Week On Broadway

Image result for a celebration of cole porter logoExciting news theater fans. Two-time Tony Award nominee Harry Connick Jr. is headed back to the Great White Way in Harry Connick Jr. - A Celebration of Cole Porter.

Now while I knew that he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in A Musical in 2006 for his role in The Pajama Game, I had to do a little research on the second one.

As it turns out, it was in 2002 for Best Original Score for Thou Shalt Not, which unfortunately opened to scathing reviews, and closed after eighty-five performances and twenty-two previews. Here's hoping his new show fares better than that one did. Fingers crossed.

The show, which had it's world premier at the Durham Performing Arts Center in North Carolina this past September,  is set to begin performances at the Nederlander Theatre on Saturday December 6, and play thru Sunday December 29. It was also recently announced that the show will embark on a national tour following the Broadway engagement.

By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see Harry Connick Jr.- A Celebration of Cole Porter, you have come to the right place. We sell it. In fact, we sell every play and musical both On and Off-Broadway. Get your tickets to see Harry Connick Jr. - A Celebration of Cole Porter on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre.
