Disney's The Lion King-Going Strong Since 1997

Can you believe it's been almost 12 years since The Lion King first opened on the Great White Way? I sure can't. The show which opened to rave reviews in December of 1997 is Disney's most successful show since they first started producing musicals on Broadway in 1994. Their first show was Beauty and the Beast and since that time five other shows have since opened. Some successful like Aida and Mary Poppins. Some not so successful like Tarzan and the soon to be closed The Little Mermaid. Their shows while good for families don't have the wide appeal that other shows seem to have. That is probably why their last few shows have failed to run as long as The Lion King has. It seems to me like they are running out of ideas. I dare say it's time for them to produce something original. Just because it was a hit movie doesn't mean it's going to work on stage. When you compare a $12 movie ticket to a $120 Broadway ticket you better make sure it's worth it. Disney has made some great movies over the years that are not animated musicals. Maybe it's time to try something new. The Lion King won't last forever you know.

How to Buy Tickets for Broadway

It's important to know the company you are buying tickets from when planning to attend a Broadway Show.

So you are thinking about buying tickets for one of the current Broadway Shows playing. A quick Google search for "Broadway tickets" will yield you over 14 million different results along with 23 different advertisers that display ads on all results pages. Talk about confusion?

Right now you probably think I'm going to say something typical like "call our company, we're the best place to buy tickets for Broadway". Why would I do that? That would make me just another "pushy" sales man.

Most of us that shop on the Internet regularly realize that after a while, many companies all tend to resemble the next one. This is true when shopping for Broadway tickets as well.

In fact it seems that most of the Broadway ticket agencies that come up in the search results aren't even located in New York City. Does it make sense that these companies would really know everything about all the shows or what's happening in New York City? I would tend to think probably not. They also don't seem to display any kind of licensing information as required by the State of New York, Department of Licensing Division. Does it make sense to take a risk and purchase tickets for Broadway Theater not knowing if the company is legitimate or not?

After you do your due diligence, shop around and ask questions, we hope you'll consider a call to Applause Theater Service in New York City. At Applause, you get a really excellent customer service experience. And with real people you can trust.

Click here and see what some of our past and current customers say about us. At Applause you'll be given all the options of seating as well as pricing options. And remember to ask for the Below Face Value ticket deals. We know all the discounts that are being offered on a daily basis. Why pay more than you need to?

Remember to say The Ticket Man sent you. You'll be glad you did.

The 70's Rule-Mamma Mia Is Still Going Strong

In the 17+ years that I have lived here there is only one Broadway theatre that I have never been in. That theatre is the WinterGarden which is home to the International hit Mamma Mia. When I first moved here Cats was playing there and there was no way in hell that I was going to see that piece of crap. Well to be truthful it couldn't have been that bad. It did last 17 years after all. Mamma Mia opened in October 2001 and has been a hit ever since. To be honest the show isn't really my thing. I like some of the music but there is a big difference between 4 singers from Sweden singing those songs as opposed to a bunch of Broadway belters. Look whether I see the show or not it really doesn't matter. The show is still one of Broadways most popular shows and should be for a very long time to come. Me not seeing won't change that.

The Boys From The Hood Make Good-Jersey Boys Is A Hit

Now in it's 4th sold out year is Jersey Boys. The show which tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is still one of the most popular shows on Broadway. I saw the show about two years into the run and thought it was phenomenal. Going in I wasn't sure if I would like it but I did. It's funny I knew most of the songs but I had no idea how much this talented foursome really struggled to make it to the top. Being a writer myself I found the show very inspiring and if I could have half the success that they had I would consider myself very lucky. If you haven't seen the show I strongly suggest you check it out next time you visit our fair city. It is a winner. Don't forget. If you are travelling across the pond Jersey Boys is also playing in the West End. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Jersey Boys. "Oh what a night."

The Recession May Be Over for Some of Us on Broadway

But will high Broadway ticket prices hurt the shows even when recession ends?

I've been working in the Broadway ticket business forever it seems. Even though the Broadway theater has been doing quite well this last year and a half, as I look at sales figures from some of the Broadway Shows recently-it looks like some of the shows are beginning to wane a bit.

Being an entrepreneur for just about 22 years now, I pride myself on being a provider of "excellent service" with fair and reasonable service charges for our ticket service. I think that's one big reason why our little company called Applause Theater Service will always be around in good times and in bad.

So every week I study the sales figures for 20-28 Broadway Shows and I see a similar pattern all the time. It seems like a new show can open like Burn The Floor to pretty good reviews, then sales start to rise but after a few weeks or so, the numbers begin to fall. Almost like they are an "older show" that might be closing somewhere in the near future.

You might remember 9 to 5 The Musical opening on Broadway a few months ago. It is a solid Broadway theater piece. Unfortunately it is like many others that have appeared on the Great White Way in years past. 9 to 5 The Musical received decent reviews but the word of mouth with a pretty attractive "star cast" with music by Dolly Parton herself seemed to be enough to start selling lots of tickets. But the problem again that I noticed weeks ago is that sales began to slow right away as well.

What I'm saying here is that recession or no recession, people don't want to pay the high price of admission to theater, concerts or any sporting events if they feel it is overpriced. So why doesn't the Broadway theater go to a price structure that might be more conducive to charging lower prices. Maybe they can price the theater so that people feel like they got a good value, a great experience and then simply let the "word of mouth" about the show take their natural course. That would sure sell more tickets wouldn't it?

All you ever seem to hear people saying is that football and baseball tickets cost too much and that Broadway theater is too expensive to go anymore. This is generally true if you don't know the "little secrets" to buying tickets for Broadway Theater as well as any reserved seating event ticket.

Although I cannot literally divulge our secrets, what I can tell you is this: shop around, talk to a human being and make sure you are getting the very best seat for the very best price. After all, its your money right?

Make your calls and your Internet inquiries then give a call to Applause at 800-451-9930 or 212-307-7050 right here in New York City. Applause Theater Service has been around nearly 22 years this September 1, 2009. We are a licensed ticket agency (license #71AP1001029) for all the shows in New York.

You have nothing to lose. You definitely will save lots of money and experience our excellent service as well. Let us know how we can help you solve your problems of paying too much for your tickets.

Just tell them The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. That's me, Rich Gladstone.

Rich Gladstone

Latino's Rejoice! In The Heights Is #1

Those of you who read my blogs or those who know me or work with me at Applause know how much I love In The Heights. It is by far my favorite show running on Broadway and one of my favorites of all time. Even as I write this I am listening to the cast recording. In other words, "I LOVE THIS SHOW!"

Now for those of you who haven't seen it I suggest you do. It has got everything you could possibly want in a Broadway musical. Great music. Amazing choreography. Not to mention one of the sexiest and talented casts on Broadway today. The show also won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical. They don't just give that award to just anyone you know. In The Heights was not only the best show that season but one of the best shows of the past decade. Look I can go on and on about how great this show is but you need to find out for yourself. The ball is in your court.

Rock Your A** Off At Rock Of Ages

That's right all you head banging fans from the 1980's. Do I have a show for you. It's called Rock of Ages and it is one of the coolest and sexiest shows running on Broadway today. The show which features over twenty-four of the best songs from the 80's is an awesome show that will entertain you from beginning to end. Rock of Ages currently stars former American Idol contestant and Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis. If you are looking for a great night in the theater than this is the show for you. It was also recently announced that Mr. Maroulis has extended his contract thru next summer so if that doesn't make you want to see it than nothing will. Except for the great music and sexy cast of course. In the immortal words of Bret Michaels, "Don't need nothing but a good time." At Rock of Ages you will have that and more. Rock On!!!!

Last Three Weeks To See Avenue Q

Now I'm really sad. Yes I know that I've know for a couple of months now that Avenue Q is closing but it still hurts. The show which lasted a lot longer than anyone ever thought it would will conclude it's six year run on Sunday September 13. Avenue Q which beat Wicked for the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical is one of my favorite shows and I am so proud that a little show about puppets found success on the Great White Way. There will never be anything like it and I hope that eventually it will find it's way back to Broadway again in the future. There are only 23 performances left so don't delay. Get your tickets to see Avenue Q on Broadway. It is the only show that offers full frontal puppet nudity after all.

West Side Story Won't Be Just Any Night!!!!!!!

If you love the movie like I do you will love this production of West Side Story.West Side Story takes Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the gang-ridden streets of Manhattan in the 1950s. Instead of the Capulets and Montagues, we have the Puerto Rican Sharks versus the Anglo Jets. In place of Romeo and Juliet are Tony and Maria, two teens torn between ethnic loyalty and their intense, abrupt love for one another. The Leonard Bernstein- Stephen Sondheim score includes "Tonight", "Somewhere", "Maria" and "Somethings Coming.West Side Story stars Josefina Scaglione and Matt Cavenaugh. It was just announced on Aug. 25 that slight lyric changes were put into place during production at Broadway's Palace Theatre on Aug. 20.Two songs that had been performed in Spanish since the shows opening — "A Boy Like That" ("Un Hombre Asi"), sung by Tony winner Karen Olivo, and "I Feel Pretty" ("Siento Hermosa"), led by Tony nominee Josefina Scaglione — are now delivered mostly in English. The Spanish sung by the Sharks in the "Tonight" (Quintet) remains. For a great night out on Broadway go see West Side Story. For the best seats at the best prices call Applause!!!!

Wicked Is Still Broadway's #1 Show

Six years and over 2,400 performances later Wicked is still going strong with no end in sight. Wicked which is now a worldwide sensation has been breaking box office records at the Gershwin Theatre since October 2003 and everywhere in between. The show which believe it or not did not get very good reviews when it opened continues to sell out every night. Broadway has not seen a hit like this in years and I expect Wicked to be around for a very long time. Will it outlast Broadway's longest running hit The Phantom of the Opera? Well they have a long way to go but if any show has a chance to break Phantom's record than it is Wicked. Good seats are available for all performances so call Applause now to get your tickets to see Broadways most popular show Wicked The Musical. Don't forget Applause has tickets for Wicked in London and Nationwide as well.

NATB Gives Back... Stories From Ronald McDonald House

The other day I wrote a blog post entitled Charity Begins at Work Too. It tells the story of a group of men and women that make a living selling tickets for Broadway Shows, Concerts, Sporting Events and other entertainment attractions around the country. It reveals the tremendous amount of charity work that is being done between the NATB (National Association of Ticket Brokers), its nearly 200 members and Ronald McDonald House Charities. RMHC gives children with medical challenges from all over the world a chance to receive much needed treatment as well as family housing at a local RMHC chapter.

The cause is an important one friends. All we have to do is think for an instant about how lucky we are to have healthy children right?

Anyway, I have been fortunate to work with a fantastic group of folks on the NATB Charity Committee that has been tasked with asking their fellow ticket brokers to give lots of tickets to preseason NFL football games all over the country as well as much needed volunteer time at local Ronald McDonald House's around the country. Now that the preseason games have begun and our regional coordinators, staff, family and friends have paid visits to local RMHC chapter locations, we are receiving lots of feedback from our volunteers.

If you have a minute, maybe you can read a few of their stories. They'll warm your heart. I know they sure did that to mine.

Here they are, more will follow for sure. Be well friends.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

****Volunteer Stories****
Story #1
Dear All,
I delivered the 98 tickets that we collected for Seattle this past Tuesday. We had 35 tickets for Game 1 and 63 for Game2. All of the donors have been mailed a receipt for tax purposes already.

The facility consists of 3 buildings housing 80 families. It is currently the second largest house in the US. One building is only 10 units (6 one bedroom and 4 2 bedroom apartments) and is locked down pretty much 24 hrs a day. These are the most critical children. This house works closely with Children's Hospital of Seattle and primarily serves as the main destination for critical children with bone cancer. Unfortunately, despite all of their efforts, 63 children in 2008 and 51 children in 2007 passed away while receiving treatment, care, and services at Children's Hospital and the house. Dianna Finnerty is the Executive Director and I toured the 3 buildings. Of course they have huge kitchens and pantry's to service 80 families and several game rooms, audio visual and media library, computer learning centers and a 20 seat theatre donated at a cost of 150 K by former Seattle Sonic Rashard Lewis. I will work with the local brokers to fill the volunteer hours and ask for their participation in the October 17th formal Gala being held in Seattle. This is the main fund raising event for the Seattle house and I hope that the brokers will participate by buying a sponsor table. The house has an annual budget of 3.3 million, 23 full time staff, and 500 volunteers throughout the year.

I'll download some pictures later this weekend and forward them on to everyone.

Keep up the good work,

Story #2 (this has two parts)
PART #1
Thanks, Roger. My donation form is attached. I am donating 20 tickets total (with a total face value of $726). After talking to Kathy, I did not have any tickets for the first pre-season games for Tampa Bay or Jacksonville. The second pre-season games for both of those teams were already at the quota, so I decided to go a different route and donate for some other teams/cities.

I will be contacting the RMHC here in Orlando and seeing how I can help. I am currently a one-man shop here, so I am hoping that they'll have something for which my whole family can help out (me, my wife, and my three oldest sons, and possibly one or more grand-parents). Since I spend a lot of time working the ticket brokerage (and my other job), I don't have much time with my family. So, I would love to donate some of my time - as long as I can do so with my family. I'll keep you updated on my discussions with RMHC.

I would not mind being on the committee at some point, but, for now, I'm going to have to pass. I have too many things going on right now. However, I may be able to help out as the next season approaches.
Thanks again,

Roger,
Wanted to give you an update...

My family and I toured the RMHC @ Florida Hospital in Orlando this past Thursday morning. It was a fantastic tour and an amazing facility. We have scheduled a Share-A-Meal for October 11th and plan on that being the start to our activities with them.

I'll keep you updated on how it goes.

Burn The Floor Extends Broadway Engagement

Dance fans around the world can rejoice. Burn The Floor, the international dance sensation has officially been extended thru January 2010. The show which was originally supposed to close in October has been selling out nightly at the Longacre Theatre since it opened earlier this month. The show currently features Anya Garnis and Pasha Kovalev of Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance."

"From Harlem's hot nights at The Savoy, where dances such as the Lindy, Foxtrot and Charleston were born, to the Latin Quarter where the Cha-Cha, Rumba and Salsa steamed up the stage, Burn the Floor takes audiences on a journey through the passionate drama of dance," according to press notes. "The elegance of the Viennese Waltz, the exuberance of Jive, the intensity of the Paso Doble — audiences will experience them all, as well as the Tango, Samba, Mambo, Quickstep, and Swing. It's Ballroom dance with a sexy 21st century edge."

Sounds hot to me. I think it's time to check this one out.

Broadway's "Monster" Hit Is Shrek The Musical

Now is the best time to get your tickets to see Shrek The Musical on Broadway. This new musical which is based on the 1990 book by William Steig and the hit 2001 movie. I have to be the only one on the planet who hasn't seen the movie but animated films aren't really my cup of tea. Imagine my surprise when I went to see the musical and loved it. In fact I even got a little chocked up a few times. Yes believe it or not men do cry. I'm not afraid to admit it. Anyway enough about me. Back to the show. In a nutshell it's fantastic. Great cast. Great music. Not to mention a story that will warm your heart. Now that sounds like a show you want to see right? So what are you waiting for? Revivals Are The Thing On Broadway

That's right theatre fans. Some of Broadway's most popular shows are plays and musicals from the past. Last years big winner was Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. The show which won 7 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival is still one of the most popular shows on the Great White Way. This new production which marks the first time it's been on Broadway since the original 1949 production is currently playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center. The show is not only visually stunning but features some of the most talented performers on Broadway today including Tony winner Paulo Szot. Kelli O'Hara who originated the role of Nellie Forbush in this production is set to return to the production this fall following the birth of her first child. I saw the show during previews and absolutely loved it. If you get the chance I highly recommend you catch the show next time you're in town. They don't make shows like this anymore. Get Your Tickets To See Jersey Boys On Broadway

Don't tell me you still haven't seen Jersey Boy's yet. Well what are you waiting for people? It's only one of the most popular shows running on Broadway today. Not only that but it is probably the best Jukebox musical of all time. Yes I know all the Mamma Mia fans will probably disagree with me but it's true. As most of you know the show tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and their meteoric rise to stardom. Being a songwriter myself I found the show very inspiring and made me realize that anything is possible if you work hard enough. Jersey Boys is a winner and if you get the chance make sure you see it during your next trip to New York. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. Charity Begins at Work Too

National Association of Ticket Brokers Gives Back

Many of us open our mailboxes each day and find various letters from many charities asking us for donations. For myself and my family, we generally sit down once a month and simply write out a check for several organizations that are in need while paying our bills. It’s easy to do and makes you feel good doesn’t it?

I have been a ticket broker for 31 years now primarily providing a personal ticket service for Broadway Shows. Over 21 years ago I co-founded my own ticket agency called Applause Theatre Service in New York City. We cater to the ticket needs of consumers, hotel concierge, corporations, tour operators and travel agencies all over the world.

About 4 years ago I joined an industry trade organization called NATB, which stands for the National Association of Ticket Brokers. Although I joined NATB so that I could keep my little company aware of ongoing concerns in my industry, I was amazed at how much thought was being put into charitable efforts within this organization. The NATB is made up of nearly 200 or so companies and growing daily. In the past year I have been working with this group of ticket broker companies around the country that are involved with a very important charitable effort. It’s called NATB Gives Back. The program is the NATB’s way of having these ticket broker companies, staff and family members “give back” to the local communities that support our businesses. And what a great organization it is.

The NATB Gives Back has recently launched our first partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities. The program is a 3 year partnership called “32 for 32” and the goal is to donate 32 tickets for every preseason NFL football game in every one of the 32 markets all over the country. NATB ticket broker members have been generous in providing $117,661.64 including nearly 3000 donated tickets as well as having signed up for 298 volunteer hours at local Ronald McDonald Houses across the Unites States. I’m proud to report that since the first preseason football games have kicked off last Thursday August 13, 2009, that every day we are receiving additional ticket donations along with volunteers willing to work at their local Ronald McDonald House locations. Click here for a list of our donors.

The President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities is Marty Coyne. Mr. Coyne has recently said “RMHC and our local chapters rely on generous donations of our corporate partners and the NATB is providing valuable contributions in terms of volunteers and entertainment for our families. Our families are going through difficult medical situations with their child, and NATB is giving them a chance to relax and take their minds off their worries-if only for a few moments. This partnership is a natural extension of our mission to support families-both financially and emotionally-during a very difficult time of their lives.”

Since the football preseason has just begun and the families have begun attending the games, we have received lots of pictures from the NATB Regional Coordinators from around the country and have taken the liberty of sharing them with you. There will be lots more to come I’m sure. The smiling faces of the families say it all. They are greatly appreciative of everything.

To all of our fellow ticket brokers who have contributed tickets, volunteer time at a Ronald McDonald House, served on one of our committees or made any kind of contribution to the NATB Gives Back Program, we are forever grateful to you. To those who might want to help us with these charitable efforts in the future, we would appreciate any ticket donations or volunteer time you might be able to give us in the days ahead. Every minute counts. It feels good to help others, really it does.

Please click here and see how you can join the NATB in its goal of “giving back” to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Wicked-Broadway's Biggest Hit

Can you believe it's been almost six years since Wicked first opened on the Great White Way? Since then it has not only become a Broadway favorite but one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The show which is also an international sensation continues to sell out every night at the Gershwin Theatre. I saw the show about a week before opening and thought it was good and would probably run awhile. Who would have imagined that it would become the big hit that it has become. I sure didn't. Most people forget that the show didn't get very good reviews when it opened. Not only that but the show which was expected to win the 2004 Tony Award lost the big prize to the little show that could Avenue Q. Which by the way is closing on September 13. Look whether the critics liked it or not Wicked is here to stay. That is a guarantee.

Broadway "Rocks Out"-Rock Of Ages Is A Hit!

Who would have thought that a musical featuring a bunch of classic 80's rock songs starring an American Idol finalist would be a big Broadway hit? I tell you who. Me. I first saw Rock of Ages Off-Broadway and told my friend that if this show moves to Broadway then it would not only sell but would be the sleeper hit of the 2008-2009 Broadway Season. I am proud to say that not only was I right but it has done ever better than I or the producers of the show could have ever imagined. The show which garnered five 2009 Tony nominations including Best Musical has been selling at over 90% since it opened this past Spring. Not bad for a show nobody thought would even make it Off-Broadway. What I love most about this show besides the awesome music is that it is attracting crowds that might not normally come to a Broadway show. We need more of that. If not Broadway might cease to exist someday. O.K. I'm probably getting a little over dramatic but theatre is important. We need to support theatre at all costs.Let's face it. Without theatre the world would be a pretty boring place. Without theatre there would be one less happy person in the world. Me.

Next To Normal

You think your family is messed up? Well then you'll love the new Broadway hit and Tony winner Next To Normal. The show which first opened Off-Broadway last year at the Second Stage Theater opened to rave reviews across the board this past Spring. I had first heard of the show back in 2005 when it was called Feeling Electric and played at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. That production featured a cast of Broadway veterans including Amy Spanger and Anthony Rapp. The show which went thru several revisions over the years is one of the most original and exciting shows to hit Broadway in years. Being a composer and writer myself I am so happy a show like this has found a place on the Great White Way. It's shows like Next To Normal that give me hope not only for my show but for the future of the American Musical Theatre. The producers of Next To Normal should be commended for taking a chance on a show that while disturbing at times touches your heart and makes you see what is really important in this day in age. That my friends is family. Without them we are nothing. With them we are whole.

Superior Donuts Box Office Opens Today

Superior Donuts, the new play by Tony and Pulitzer winning playwright Tracy Letts is set to begin previews at the Music Box Theatre on September 16. His last show August:Osage County was a personal favorite of mine and I am really looking forward to this new production. The play which like August:Osage County premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago received great reviews and will officially open on October 1. It was recently announced that the entire Chicago company will be reprising their roles for the Broadway run.

"The show tells the story of Arthur Przybyszewski who owns a decrepit donut shop in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. This comedy-drama, set in the heart of one of Chicago's most diverse communities, explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship."(Official Website)

I can't wait to see this show. Call Applause now to get your tickets to what is sure to be one of the most anticipated new plays of the season.

Broadway-The Perfect Date

Looking to impress that special someone? Why take them to a Broadway show of course. Last week a friend of mine called me asking for a suggestion on a show to take his new lady friend to see. I asked him if she had ever seen a Broadway show and he said," He had just taken her to see Mamma Mia last month and she loved it." I of course suggested my favorite show In The Heights. Well wouldn't you know it but she grew up in New York and is also Spanish. I know what you're thinking. What does that have to do with In The Heights? Well for those of you who have never seen the show or heard anything about it then all I have to say to you is,"Have you been living under a rock for the past two years? The show won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and is one of the most successful shows to open on Broadway in the last few years." Oh and by the way the show takes place in a Spanish neighborhood in Washington Heights. That is a neighborhood in New York for those of you that are wondering. Anyway back to my friend. He took her to the show and of course like everybody I send to the show she loved it. In fact she was so overcome with emotion that when he asked her to marry him she jumped out of her seat and screamed "Yes!" at the top of her lungs. O.K. so I made that last part up. She did love the show though. The point is whether it's In The Heights or Phantom of the Opera there is nothing better than seeing a show with the one you love. Just ask my boss Rich Gladstone AKA The Ticket Man. He's been happily married for twenty-two years after all.

Last Three Weeks To See 9 to 5 The Musical

That's right theatre fans. You only have three more weeks to see 9 to 5. That's only 24 performances for those of you keeping count. The show which had a lot of buzz prior to it's Spring opening was unnecessarily panned by the critics. I liked the show. Is it a show that will change your life? No. Not every show has to do that. What it does is entertain you and make you laugh. Isn't that what theatre is supposed to do? I think so. The show is not perfect. I'll admit that. Most shows rarely are nowadays. What it is is a lot of fun. If you get the chance I suggest you check it out before it's gone forever. 24 shows and counting..........

Go Green! See Shrek The Musical On Broadway

Shrek The Musical had to be one of the biggest surprises for me last year. I walked into the show kicking and screaming because I knew that I would probably hate it. I had never seen any of the movies and quite frankly never had any desire too. Animated films are not really my thing. However there was a girl that I was taking to the show who loved the films and I wanted to impress her so I went even though I was sure I was going to be disappointed. Well I guess the old saying is true. "You can't judge a book by it's cover." I loved the show. From the very beginning I was hooked. Every member of the cast from the ensemble to the four principals were amazing. The sets and costumes were perfect and the music worked well with the show. Shrek which was nominated for Best Musical is a great show for the whole family and if you get the chance I highly recommend you see it on your next trip to New York. It is a hit!

National Association of Ticket Brokers "Gives Back"

If you've ever purchased tickets for a Broadway Show, Sporting Event or a Rock Concert anywhere in the United States, you may have had the opportunity to buy your tickets from a member of the NATB, which stands for the National Association of Ticket Brokers. The NATB is a non-profit trade organization made up of nearly 200 or so legitimate ticket resellers throughout the country. The NATB has a "code of ethics" and represents its ticket broker members as well as the active promoting of "consumer protection" whenever the public engages in the purchasing of tickets. In addition the NATB has been actively promoting members to be "good neighbors" in their communities. We think the best way to be a good neighbor is simply by "giving back" to our local communities where we run our businesses all around the country.

Although most people know that a legitimate ticket broker provides a much needed service for a reasonable price, I'd like to share a story with you that you may not be aware of. Our NATB organization has just "kicked off" an official multi-year partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities which will include ticket donations from many NATB ticket broker members as well as volunteerism at local Ronald McDonald House chapters throughout the United States. This new partnership is part of the NATB Gives Back 32 for 32 Program where ticket brokers, their staff and families have generously given tickets to NFL preseason football games as well as volunteer time to assist the families of children with difficult medical challenges.

According to Marty Coyne, the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities, he said "RMHC and our local chapters rely on the generous donations of our corporate partners and the NATB is providing valuable contributions in terms of volunteers and entertainment for our families. Our families are going through difficult medical situations with their child, and NATB is giving them a chance to relax and take their minds off their worries-if only for a few moments. This partnership is a natural extension of our mission to support families-both financially and emotionally-during a very difficult time of their lives."

The three year 32 for 32 Program will donate 32 tickets for every NFL preseason game in each of the 32 NFL markets. In addition, our members are giving 32 hours of volunteer time at one of the many Ronald McDonald Houses around the country.

As of today the NATB has donated $117,661.64 in NFL ticket donations as well as 298 hours of volunteer time. Wow! Every day there are more and more volunteers from NATB ticket broker companies all over the country giving additional tickets and acts of volunteerism. I am personally so proud of the people that are helping out with this effort. For a list of contributors click here.

If you're a ticket broker and can help the NATB in its mission to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities by giving ticket donations of any kind or volunteer hours, we would greatly appreciate your assistance today. Every minute counts. Any ticket donations are greatly appreciated. It feels so great to help others in need.

Please click here and see how you to can join the NATB in its mission of "giving back" to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Thank you for caring.

A Steady Rain Box Office To Open August 20

A Steady Rain, the new show starring a cast of unknowns is set to begin previews on September 10 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The show which as of yet has received very little press or any buzz will officially open on September 29 and run thru December 6. If you haven't figured out by now I am totally kidding. The show already has a huge advance and so far quite a few dates are already sold out. Now that doesn't mean you still can't get tickets. There are other options. Ever here of Premium seats? Yes they are a little more expensive but they are up close. I know that will excite all you Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman fans. Now for those of you who are expecting to see Peter Allen or James Bond then you might be in for a little bit of a shock. According to the website it does contain a lot of profanity, mature subject matter, and politically incorrect language. The play tells the story of two Chicago cops who are lifelong friends and their differing accounts of a few harrowing days that changed their lives forever. As I mentioned tickets are selling very well so get your tickets before it is too late.

Tonight's The Night to See West Side Story...

Back on Broadway West Side Story is delighting fans of all ages. In what director/librettist Arthur Laurents says will convey authenticity, this version of the landmark musical will have Spanish interwoven in the dialogue and songs and gang members who are more thug life than thug lite. A classic love story West Side Story tells a Romeo and Juliet type of tale set in the gang ridden street of New York. Instead of Romeo and Juliet you have the Tony and Maria two teens torn between ethnic loyalty and their intense, abrupt love for one another. With great dance numbers and a wonderful score with songs such as "Tonight", "Somewhere", "Maria", " I Have Love" and "Something's Coming" West Side Story is one show not to be missed. Still Haven't Seen Billy Elliot? Call Applause

Winner of 10 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical is Billy Elliot. The show which first premiered in London has been selling out nightly since it opened to rave reviews last fall. Billy Elliot which has a score by Tony and Grammy Award winner Elton John is based on the hit 2000 movie of the same name. Currently four boys, three of which made Tony Award history by sharing the Best Actor Award, rotate the role of Billy. Since it opened it has been one of our most requested shows. Just to let you know the Imperial Theater which houses Billy Elliot is not very big so there really isn't a bad seat in the house. In fact the first row of the Front Mezzanine, which only has six rows, overhangs row H of the Orchestra. Now while there are some partial view seats in the theatre you don't really miss that much and they are cheaper too. Most people don't know that Broadway theatres are smaller than most theatres around the country. Well now that you know about the theatre why not check out the show. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Billy Elliot on Broadway.

Worldwide Sensation Mamma Mia Leaves Them Dancing In The Aisles

Now in it's 8th hit year on Broadway is Mamma Mia. The show which has been delighting audiences Worldwide since 2000 is still a sensation on Broadway and everywhere in between. I swear I must be the only person left on the planet who hasn't seen this show. Heck I haven't even seen the hit movie staring Meryl Streep. I figure I have plenty of time to see it as the show will probably be here for a long time. The other day I had a regular customer of mine call asking for some recommendations on the new shows coming up this season. When it comes to most shows we have the same tastes. Then he asked if I had seen Mamma Mia.I said that I have avoided it because I really have no interest in seeing it. He in turn asked me if I was married. I told him I was not. That is why I probably hadn't seen it he said. My friend who has been dating a girl took her to see it and she loved it. I guess I'll just wait until I have a girlfriend. Maybe she won't want to see it. Wait. I'm not that lucky. Until then I will keep avoiding the show until that day comes. Let's face facts. The show will survive whether I see it or not. Cats and Les Miz did.

Disney On Broadway

One down. Two to go. That's right all Disney fans. The Little Mermaid will soon be gone which leaves Mary Poppins and The Lion King. Which will be next? Look as much as I don't like Disney or what they stand for they ain't going anywhere. Yes I said ain't. Get over it. As of this November The Lion King will celebrate it's 12th year on Broadway. Not to shabby for a show based on a cartoon. The show is just as popular as it was in 1997 and I don't see that changing anytime soon. My feelings about the show won't change that. Now Mary Poppins is another story. I personally liked the show. The movie was a favorite of mine as a child and I thought the show was just as charming and entertaining as the film if not more. Bet you never thought I'd say that did you? Time to time my co-workers and I like to speculate what will be the next show to close. Mary Poppins is one that comes up. I say that as long as the show is doing well and the fact that the New Amsterdam is their flagship theatre they will not close it until they are ready to put another show in there. I personally hope it stays around for awhile. It's the perfect show for all ages.

Don't forget. The Little Mermaid will be gone on August 30 and most dates are already sold out. Get your tickets before it is too late. Call Applause now to see Disney on Broadway.

South Pacific VS Hair

Two hit shows. Two Tony Award winning revivals. Which one to see? How about both of them? Having seen both shows I can attest to how good they are. Let's take a look at both shows and le you can decide.

South Pacific-This new revival of one of Broadway's most beloved musicals has been selling out nightly eight times a week at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The show which won 7 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival is still one of the most popular shows running on Broadway and should continue to be for a very long time. For those people looking to buy tickets I have some important info for you. First of all this production is in the round so you know what that means right? All the seats are great. It is also the largest stage on Broadway so you don't miss a thing. That includes upstairs which by the way is only five rows. You know how in most theatres the first 8-10 rows are on the same level? Not with this theatre. Every row is raised and there are only 13 rows in total. Now can you beat that? So now that you know the in an outs of the theatre it is time to get your tickets to see the show.

Hair-This years winner for Best Musical Revival is one of the most exciting and poignant shows running on Broadway today. The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1968 is still as relevant today as it was over forty years ago. I loved the show and found it to be one of the most powerful nights in the theater that I have ever experienced. They grab you from the first song and don't let you go until the end. I guess you could say I liked the show huh? By the way. For those of you who are turned off by the nudity don't be. It is minimal and is over before you know it. I can't recommend this show enough and hope you get a chance to see it next time you're in town.

Well there you have it. Two top notch productions. While both may be different in both substance in style they entertain you and make you think. Isn't that what theater is suppose to do after all?

Celebrate The Music Of The Night-See The Phantom Of The Opera On Broadway

January 26, 1988. Anybody know what is special about this date? Give up? O.K. I guess I'll tell you. On that date The Phantom of the Opera opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. The show which won the Tony Award for Best Musical is also the longest running show in Broadway history. Growing up in a small town in Illinois I wasn't exposed to a lot of theatre except for the shows I did in high school and Community Theater. Therefore I was so excited to hear something new as opposed to Rodger's and Hammerstein or Frank Loesser. During my senior year I actually bought a ticket to go see it in Chicago but wouldn't you know it there was a snowstorm and I couldn't go. Cut to three years later. I am now living in New York and my school gets free tickets to see the show. Well all I can say is, "It was worth the wait." Here we are almost twenty-two years later and it is still one the most popular shows on Broadway. How much longer will it continue? To be honest I could see it running for another decade or so but who knows. Plans are in the works for a sequel,Love Never Dies,to open sometime next year both on Broadway and the West End. Can both shows run at the same time and be successful? We will find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Bye Bye Birdie Box Office To Open Today

What? You didn't know that Bye Bye Birdie was coming back to Broadway? Well it's true. The Tony Award winning Roundabout Theatre Company is bringing back this beloved musical back to Broadway for the first time since the original 1960 production. I first heard of the show in eighth grade when I auditioned for the local high school production of Bye Birdie back in 1987. God I feel old. I nailed the audition and walked away with the role of Randolph MacAfee the obnoxious little brother of Kim MacAfee and son to the Ed Sullivan loving Harry MacAfee. It was my first show and after that I was hooked. I guess that's why I moved to New York 18 years ago to work in the theatre. Anyway back to the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie. Previews are set to begin at the brand new Henry Miller's Theatre on September 10. The theatre is new but they kept the name along with it's original facade. The show has an all star cast including John Stamos, Gina Gershon, and Bill Irwin. Roundabout is well know for their revivals over the years so I hope this one is good. I can't wait to see it. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway. If this doesn't make you put on a happy face then nothing will.

Oh What A New Night-See Jersey Boys On Broadway

Now in it's 4th year on Broadway is Jersey Boys. The 2006 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. The show which was not expected to be a hit when it first opened has been selling out nightly at the August Wilson Theatre since it opened to rave reviews in December 2005. When the show was first announced I didn't really think that it had a chance. After all most jukebox musicals don't usually last that long on Broadway. Mamma Mia being the exception of course. Even after all it's success I still avoided seeing the show until almost two years into the run. There was just so much hype behind it that I didn't think it could live up to my expectations. Boy was I wrong. I absolutely loved the show and if you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend you do. No worries though. Jersey Boys will be here for a very long time. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. Just so you know we sell tickets to Jersey Boys in London and everywhere Nationwide too. Oh what a night indeed.

Last Five Weeks To See Avenue Q

That's right theatre fans. You only have until September 13 to see Avenue Q. I'll admit that when they announced they were closing I got a little teary eyed. Since it opened in August 2003 I have seen the show many times and have sent many of my friends and customers at Applause to see the show. The show also has a special place in my heart as it is the first Broadway show my parents ever saw. That was over five years ago and they still talk about it. In fact the National tour of Avenue Q is coming to their hometown in December and they are going to see it. I guess you could say that the show left an impression on them. Shows like Avenue Q don't come around too often so call Applause now to get your tickets to see Avenue Q. The 2004 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.

Mary Poppins Continues To Soar On Broadway

One of Disney's most beloved films is now one of Broadway's most beloved musicals. I am of course talking about Mary Poppins. The new musical which is based on the classic 1964 movie was nominated for 7 2007 Tony Awards including Best Musical and has been charming audiences of all ages since it first opened on Broadway in November 2006. The film was a personal favorite of mine as a child and I was so excited that it was being made into a Broadway show. Now those of you who read my blogs must think I've lost my mind. I hate Disney. No what I hate are cartoons being turned into splashy Broadway musicals. Mary Poppins is different. Yes I know there were a few cartoonish elements in the movie but they were minimal. I got the chance to see the show before it first opened and I was so happy that I did. It was like being a little kid all over again. Finally Disney got it right. Let's see if they can do it again. I won't hold my breath.

The 2009 Tony Award For Best Musical Is Billy Elliot

Winner of 10 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical is Billy Elliot. The show which first premiered in the West End in March 2005 also won the Olivier Award for Best Musical. Being in the business that I am in we are often invited to see most of the new shows prior to opening. So when Billy Elliot began previews last October we as an office went to see the show. Well everybody except me. Somebody had to stay behind and answer the phones. Anyway as it turns out I didn't miss much as that was the night that the set broke down a record five times. I have to tell you that always puzzled me. Here was a show that had been running for 2 1/2 years in London with no problems. So you would think by the time they moved it to Broadway it would be running like a well oiled machine. Well after the fifth time they decided to stop the show altogether and invited everyone to come back and see it again. By then I had lost interest and didn't really care if I ever saw it. Well here we are almost a year later and I still haven't seen it. Oh well. I don't think Elton John is losing any sleep because some small time ticket broker hasn't seen his show yet. Look whether I see it or not Billy Elliot is here to stay. That is for sure. A show that continues to gross over a million dollars a week isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Who knows? Maybe I'll go see it someday. Or maybe not. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway Goes"Green"-Shrek Is A Hit

I'll be the first to admit that when Shrek was first announced I was not too excited. Sure I knew with Dreamworks behind it the show had the potential to be a hit. I'm just not big on animated movies becoming big splashy Broadway musicals.Early in the run we were invited to see the show so I figured I would give it a try. I brought along a friend of mine who loved the movies so I knew at least one of us would have a good time. Finally the show began and I sat back waiting for what I'm sure was to be another miserable night at the theatre. Well imagine my surprise when not ten minutes into it I found myself loving the show. The things they do on that stage are truly amazing. By the way it's not just a show for kids. If a guy in his mid-thirties like me enjoys it then you know it's got to be good. Shrek is a great show for the whole family. So whether your five or ninety-five I highly recommend you see Shrek The Musical. It will bring out the "Ogre" in you.

True Comedy on Broadway with The 39 Steps

OK, so you are not a big musical person. Have I got the perfect show for you. The 39 Steps, a little bit of Alfred Hitchcock meets Monty Python. The 39 Steps tells the story of an innocent man who becomes caught up in espionage, mystery and a Hitchcock thriller, to boot, in this clever staging of an "unstageable" classic.

Part espionage thriller and part slapstick comedy, the production features four actors who portray all the characters and all the action from the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film, including the chase atop the Flying Scotsman train, a bi-plane crash and the death-defying finale in London’s Palladium theatre

Take A Chance On Mamma Mia

Now in it's eight smash year on Broadway is the international sensation Mamma Mia. I swear I have to be the only one left on the planet who hasn't seen the show. Now don't get me wrong. I like some of the music. The show just doesn't interest me. But what do I know? My tastes are a lot different than the average Joe. Regardless Mamma Mia is here to stay. The show which first premiered in London in 1999 is still one of Broadway's biggest hits and shall continue to be for a very long time. Maybe I'll break down one of these days and see the show. Who knows? I might even like it. Stranger things have happened. Call Applause now to get your tickets to see Mamma Mia on Broadway. It will have you dancing in the aisles.
