Happy Broadway Ticket Buyers

We just wanted to share a very nice testimonial from one of our wonderful customers. Her email refers to our suggestion of seating for Wicked. At first she was sceptical of the seats we offered but upon our suggestion, everyone in her party loved Wicked and the seats as well.

Happy Broadway ticket customers are Applause's business. Won't you let us help you as well?

Here's the testimonial.

Hi Todd,
Thanks so much for emphasizing how there really are no bad seats in the orchestra section at the Gershwin Theater. Wicked was amazing and our seats were great!
It was my sons 16th birthday and his first time to New York City!
We had a great time and we will definitely purchase our tickets from Applause the next we come to New York City!

Happy Holidays!

Thanks so much,

Intodroducing Broadway Ticket News's Guest Bloggers

In writing today's blog post it gives me great pleasure to introduce Applause Theater Service's close friends of the Broadway Theater, Rosie and Bill Mearns. Rosie and Bill are long time writers of Music and Lyrics for the theater for over 30 years now. They live and work in New York City. When they're not working their regular jobs with the cruise lines that sail from New York City, they spend most of their time working on producing their very own Off Broadway musicals.

Applause Theater Service recently asked Rosie and Bill to attend a performance of Memphis The Musical on their behalf to get their "take" on the show. Memphis is one of Broadway's newest musicals and definite bright spots in the 2009/2010 Broadway season.

Rosie and Bill's review of Memphis The Musical can be read below along with our "plug" of their newest musical called "Ebenezer" playing a limited engagement in Atlantic City from December 4 through 20, 2009.

The friendly local Broadway ticket experts at Applause thanks Rosie and Bill for writing their very first Broadway Ticket News blog posting. Enjoy.

Hi Rich,Here's our first attempt at a Blog for MEMPHIS......see what you think...MEMPHIS the Musical, Not the City. We have not had this much FUN in a Theater in years!!! MEMPHIS is completely Entertaining, and isn’t that why we go to the Theater....to be Entertained? This show starts your foot tapping the minutes the curtain goes up and it doesn’t stop until the finale. The energy of this Extremely Talented cast explodes across the foot light and lands right in your lap. It almost takes your Breath Away. The score truly captures the music of the period. It manages to left you out of your seats with excitement, and passionately touches you heart. The Choreography, in MEMPHIS, is clever and at the same time completely engaging. The Dancers are outstanding! Every member of this cast is marvelous. The costumes are right on the money....perfect, and the sets are very clever and work beautifully within the story. BRAVO to everyone involved in this show. This is the kind of show that...though it has a few flaws...you gladly overlook them because of all the joy it brings. You should run...not walk...to see MEMPHIS, because you will be leaping with joy as you exit the Shubert Theater. Thank you to APPLAUSE to arranging these tickets.

Christmas Is Here

Yes I know Christmas is still almost four weeks away. But let's face it folks. It will be here before you know it. This coming week marks one of the busiest weeks in New York City. Four days ago was the Macy's Day Parade and in three days it will be time for the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center. Where does the time go? Now most people that are coming into town in the next couple of weeks are here to shop or see a show on Broadway or the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Yes I know the economy is not what it used to be. That doesn't mean there aren't some great deals out there. Currently there are over twenty-five shows running on Broadway and Off-Broadway that offer special "insider deal" prices. Spend that extra money on gifts or souvenirs for your family and then sit back and enjoy the show. Yes theatre can be expensive but it doesn't have to be. Just call the theatre experts at Applause and let us do the rest. It's as simple as that. Have a great holiday.

A VERY SPECIAL GIFT CERTIFICATE

I just wanted to tell you about the special Gift Certificates that we have at Applause Theatre & Entertainment Service. As many of you have learned to your dismay, almost all Gift Certificates have termination dates or they start eating away your gift certificate month by month until it disappears. Our Gift Certificates are eternal. In fact if you purchased a gift certificate for a pair of tickets, we respect the Gift Certificate even if it were purchased when a pair of tickets was half the price of what it is today. One of our customers found a gift certifcate that they had forgotten all about and we honored the gift certificatd. The only one who doesn't like our gift certificate is the Internal Revenue Service because our gift certificates are a liability that Applause has. Consequently we do not have to pay income tax on the sale until the Gift Certificate is used. The gift certificate makes every one happy: The gift giver who found the perfect gift, the gift recipient who saw a wonderful show given to them by a dear friend or a business associate and everyone who enjoys seeing the IRS having to wait for their taxes.

Have a Merry Christmas, A Happy Hanuka, A Joyous Kwanzaa, A happy Denali.

South Pacific Still Enchanting Audiences Eight Times A Week

What? You still haven't seen South Pacific yet? Well what are you waiting for people? Not only is it one of the most beautifully written musicals of all time but it is also one of the best shows currently running on the Great White Way. The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1949 won seven 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival as well as Beast Direction and Best Actor.

I first discovered the show during my junior year in high school when our drama director chose South Pacific as our Spring production. I of course wanted to play Emile de Beque but it was not to be. Although I was the understudy. I played Stewpot. You all remember him right? Of course you don't. I barely can recall what he did and I played him. Anyway enough about me. Back to the South Pacific that matters.

I first saw the show back in March of 2008 before it opened to glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike. Even almost two years into the run the show continues to draw thousands of people each week to the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Now that's saying something. By the way if you are not familiar with the theatre I can tell you that not only is it one of the smallest theatres on Broadway but they perform the show in the round. You know what that means don't you? There is not a bad seat in the house. How many theatres can say that? Get your tickets to see South Pacific on Broadway. It is a classic.

Rock Out To Rock Of Ages

Being a huge fan of 80's music I was so excited that somebody was doing a show featuring some of my favorite songs of all time. I take that back. When Rock of Ages was first announced in the Summer of 2008 I was intrigued but skeptical. You see jukebox musicals are not really my thing. Although I did love Jersey Boys. I first saw Rock of Ages Off-Broadway in October 2008. Not only was I pleasantly surprised that I liked it so much but if I had to recommend one show to see while your here then this is the one. Now I'll admit if you are the type that loves traditional musical theatre than you might not like it. Maybe I'm wrong. I have an idea. Why don't you check it out and decide for yourself. Who knows? You might even like it. I know I did.

Brave The Cold Months With Broadway's Hottest Show In The Heights

That's right folks. It's time for my weekly In The Heights blog. Now those of you who read my blogs know how much I love the show. Therefore you would think it would be no problem for me to write about it right? That wasn't the case this week. Look I can tell you how great the show is and tell you that you have to see it. That's not my style. You can see it or not. That's your choice. All I can tell you is if you are looking for a great show with an inspirational story, great music, and a talented cast that will put a smile on your face from ear to ear than In The Heights is the show for you. Granted that is just one man's opinion. Take it for what you will.
By the way you don't have to come to New York to see the show. As we speak In The Heights is on a Nationwide tour. In case you are thinking I work for the show I do not. I just love it that's all. Maybe you will too. Well look at that I guess I did find something to write about.

Until next time theatre fans.

Superior Donuts To Close In January

I don't know about you but I think it's a crying shame when a great show like Superior Donuts has to close while other shows that should not even be on Broadway continue to take up valuable theatre space. Maybe that's just me. I am very picky when it comes to the shows I see. I wasn't always like that. When I first moved here I saw everything. Some good. Some bad. The point is even though there were some things I didn't like about the production I did find some value in them. Nowadays they will put anything on Broadway and call it theatre. Not too mention charging people $120 to see these shows. I'm sorry but for that amount of money I better be somewhat impressed. Now I 'm not one of those people that have to see a star. I could care less about that. What I want is for a quality production with a good book, some catchy songs, and a talented cast. Is that too much to ask for? I don't think so. Oh I almost forgot. Superior Donuts is closing on January 3. Get your tickets before it is too late.

Applause Ticket Agency Promoting Off Broadway Theater

Off Broadway has some awesome shows playing. And the prices at these shows are considerably less expensive too. Yes maybe there is much less in the way an Off Broadway show is staged but I think it makes sense to have a look at the roster of the Off Broadway top selling shows.

Here's the list.

Happy Broadway Customers Are Our Business

I've been selling tickets all my life. Well over 32 years now.

Although today is Thanksgiving Day, we are open for business mostly to make sure everyone gets into the theater on time. Holidays are sometimes hectic in New York City and people sometimes get sick or lose their tickets and the like. If we were closed then we might not be available to help out if something went wrong with a performance for a show today.

It turns out that a customer lost their tickets for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for one of today's performances. Since street traffic is terrible these days with holiday shopping in full swing, I decided to meet them at the security area directly in front of Radio City. After I met up with this nice family at the theater, I asked the wonderful people that work at Radio City Guest Relations to help them get seated in the theater in the seat locations we sold to them. Years ago doing this was kind of a pain but with technology and the database information to prove to Radio City that our company Applause indeed did sell this client the seats, we were able to make this family very happy.

We may not have made too many new ticket sales today but we sure made this one family's outing a special one. Selling something to someone is important of course but on this Thanksgiving Day, when I got hugs from Mr. and Mrs. Love and their 3 kids, it really made my day.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Broadway Ticket Deals Update-November 26, 2009

If you love Broadway Theatre and enjoy saving money at the same time, you might be interested in this blog posting. I co-own a ticket agency called Applause. Our goal is to offer the very best personal service while giving consumers the best prices available. Although people often think ticket brokers like us are expensive, actually the reverse is true quite often.

I'll prove it to you. Here is a list I've compiled of every Broadway Show that we can obtain substantial discounts for. We simply have a deal with the shows that allow us to buy at a lower price for some performances that aren't expected to sell out all their inventory. Since the theater doesn't want unsold seats, we get a great price, add on a little service charge for our work and save the public lots of money. And the actors get to play to theaters that have a larger audience.

If you think we can be of service, we would love to hear from you. Just call and say The Broadway Ticket Man sent you. I'm the guy on the left in the picture. My staff will chuckle a bit but know you are really asking about our famous BFV ticket deals. BFV is short for Below Face Value.

Here's the list. Enjoy the Broadway Theater.

Mamma Mia And New York Theatre

Being a ticket broker in New York City I have seen hundreds of shows over the years. Now you may not believe this but I have never seen Mamma Mia. In fact out of all the Broadway Theatres I have never been in the Wintergarden. You see for the first eight years that I lived here I was able to avoid Cats and have avoided Mamma Mia for the past eight as well. Am I destined never to step foot in that theatre?

The thing is I don't see Mamma Mia closing anytime soon. Not that it doesn't have it's place on Broadway. It does. It just isn't for me. There will always be shows that I don't like. Doesn't mean that you won't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My favorite show at the moment is In The Heights. Your's might be Jersey Boys or Billy Elliot. Maybe Off-Broadway is your thing. That's the great thing about New York City. There are so many choices. What will you choose?

Until next time theatre fans.

The Applause Ticket Agency Guarantee

We get lots of calls from folks that want to purchase tickets for Broadway Theater in New York City. We hardly ever make a sale to a customer on the first phone call as there are many consumers that shop for price. When you shop for price sometimes it means you have to do allot of legwork to find the lowest price.

Although my company Applause (NY State Ticket Agency license #71AP1001029) has been around for over 2 decades offering a real personal ticket buying service experience for Broadway ticket buyers, we are unfortunately in the position of being the recipient of callers who are armed with lots of bad information, "fake" seating locations and various price quotes from others in the ticket business. Often the information is not real and "fake" seat locations are shown whereby ticket brokers offer seats but really don't even own the inventory. I guess they hope they get a phone call and can "fill their orders". These brokers give a bad name to those of us that are licensed and legit.

In any case, Applause is often put in the position to match a price with another ticket broker. If we feel that the shopper on our phone line has received a "bogus" quote, we don't get involved with matching a price. Still we get lots of calls from those folks that are shopping around from some of our friendly legitimate competitors. Since we often have shoppers tell us they like our brand of service but would appreciate a somewhat lower price, we often will indeed match a price. But only if we feel it is legit for sure.

I'm sure some lower priced competitors don't want us to match their price but since we spend allot of money on advertising to get our phone to ring, we welcome the opportunity to serve new clients. If you feel taken advantage of by your current ticket broker, maybe you need to consider your options.

Simply ask for the Applause "Price Match Guarantee".

No pressure of course. We are here if you need us.

Have a wonderful and healthy holiday season.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Update as of November 26, 2009

One of the most popular shows for decades now is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Being a licensed ticket agent for all the Broadway Shows and special events in New York City for over 32 years now, I've seen ticket prices for The annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular rise just about every year.

The economic recession that has hit this country hard, has changed the way people consume and how much they are willing to pay for goods and services. In my professional opinion as a licensed ticket agent for all the shows, I really feel that in particular, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is clearly over-priced. Especially when you think about how many ticket buyers are purchasing tickets for small children. The pricing doesn't make sense to me.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has "insider prices" if you know where to look. They make them hard to find as they obviously want folks to pay full price. With this in mind, I had decided years ago to make it my business to find the best ticket deals, pass the savings on to our customers at Applause and make our customers even happier than we like to think they already are.

So why pay more than you need to? If you think you'd like our help obtaining tickets for Radio City's Christmas Spectacular in 2009, you now know where to find us. Right here.

I hope you find this information helpful to you, your friends and family. Have a very Happy Holiday season.

Six Years And Counting-Wicked Is Still Going Strong

Has it really been six years? Time sure does fly doesn't it? You know most people forget that when Wicked first opened up it didn't get very good reviews. Yet here we are in 2009 and the show is just as popular as it ever was. I first saw the show about a week before it's official opening in October of 2003.Is it my favorite show of all time? No. That's not to say that it wasn't good. Besides who cares what I think. The show has been selling out around the world for over half a decade and should continue to do so for many years to come.

With some shows I really have to push to get people to see them. That is not the case with Wicked. In fact I would say most of our calls are from people wanting tickets to see the show either on Broadway, London, or even Nationwide. Look I'll be the first to admit that I never thought the show would do as well as it has. I figured it would run a few years and that would be that. I was wrong. I'm glad I was. If it wasn't for that show some ticket companies would be out of business. O.K. so maybe I'm over exaggerating but it is still Broadway's biggest seller. That isn't going to change anytime soon.

An All Star cast plays in Mamet's Race on Broadway

Last Friday I had a chance to see David Mamet's Race at the Barrymore Theater. In Mr. Mamet's new play, he writes and directs this 4 character play about 2 partners in a law firm and their newly hired law school graduate that are supposed to defend a white man that is charged with raping a young black women.

In Race, we get the unique opportunity to see four popular actors- James Spader (Boston Legal) who partners with David Alan Grier ( In Living Color, A Soldier's Play) and their new law partner Susan, played by Kerry Washington (Save The Last Dance, Ray, Lift and many other film and television roles), as they are asked to defend Charles Strictland (played by Richard Thomas) in a case about rape.

Race takes place in a law office. The show is at times quite powerful as the law partners argue back and forth with each other about what they think really happened between their client and the black women with the sequined red dress one night. Jack Lawson, played by Mr. Spader, has asked his new protege Susan to become involved in the case as a means of teaching her what to look out for in determining their own client's possible guilt or innocence. It turns out that the new hire has a very strong opinion of her own.

Although I felt as though Richard Thomas's role could have had a somewhat larger part in the show, overall I would recommend that people consider buying tickets for Race this season. Ms. Washington's performance is quite capable as is Mr. Grier's and the many season's that Mr. Spader played Alan Shore in Boston Legal has indeed made it easy for him to bring across his "fiery" lawyer character in Race.

Race could possibly win the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play as the current Broadway season is half over. Superior Doughnuts, the other fairly popular play on Broadway this season, is possibly going to close early next year.

There are lots of people that enjoy legal television series and films. Just thinking about these folks alone makes me think that Race will have lots of interested ticket buyers lining up once the show officially opens to critics review on December 6, 2009.

If you are interested in possibly obtaining tickets for Race, may I suggest you consider a call to Applause Ticket Agency in New York City. Applause is a local ticket seller for all the Broadway Shows.

Right now, prior to the Race opening, Applause is offering top price orchestra seats for below the regular cost of the show. They can do this as they have an "insider's price" from the producer and simply pass on the savings to their customers. For people on a somewhat tighter budget, Applause can offer front mezzanine seats (which is where I sat in the theater) for even less money.

The insider's price is good for most performances of Race through December 23, 2009. Even though I anticipate that Race will garner good reviews from the critics, the current economic recession will probably still make it necessary for the show to offer these ticket deals even further into the future.

Here's Applause's contact information below. I hope you found this Broadway Ticket News blog helpful.

Final Two Weeks For Three Shows

That's right playgoers.Sunday December 6 will mark the end for three shows. Hamlet, After Miss Julie, and A Steady Rain. Now the one thing these three shows have in common is that they were all limited runs. That's where the similarities stop.Let's take a look.

Hamlet-Let's be honest. Most people are not going to the show because the are fans of William Shakespeare's. Although the man sure knows how to write dramas. The main selling point is film star Jude Law. Now while he does have a following I don't think the show would have been as well received if he didn't have the acting chops to pull it off. According to everything I've read he does. Hopefully we won't have to wait another fourteen years to see this talented actor on the boards again.

After Miss Julie-This new adaptation of Strindburg's Miss Julie marks the Broadway debut of film star Sienna Miller who by the way also just happens to be the ex of Hamlet himself, Jude Law. While the show received mix reviews Ms. Miller was praised for her work in the show. Dare I suggest a revival of Streetcar with her and Mr. Law in 2011. Wishful thinking perhaps.

A Steady Rain-Last but certainly not least is a new play by playwright Keith Huff. The show which first premiered in Chicago stars a pair of unknown actor's who play two of Chicago's finest. Kidding. We all know the only reason this show has been breaking box office records is because of the shows two stars. Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. These two could have read the phone book for ninety minutes and it still would have made money. Now whether or not these two are remembered come Tony time is another story.

Well there you are. Three shows. Three closings. Tickets are still available for all shows. Which will you choose? Until next time.

A Little Night Music Now In Previews

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past month then you know that Catherine Zeta-Jones is making her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. Oh and don't forget five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury as well. The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1973 began previews last night at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway. I'll admit that I'm not the biggest Sondheim fan in the world although Company does rank up there as one of my favorite musicals of all time. Not too mention last years production of Sunday In The Park With George which completely blew me away. Maybe I'm a Sondheim fan after all.

This new revival is based on the critically acclaimed production which opened this past March at the Garrick Theatre in London. Let's be honest. Would the show be selling as well as it is without it's two main stars? Who knows? Sondheim shows while critically acclaimed have never been big money makers. The show is going to have to receive some pretty outstanding reviews to survive after it's two stars leave. We shall see. Until next time theatre fans.

A View From The Bridge Is Now On Sale

That's right theatre fans. Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge is set to make it's return to the Great White Way next month. The show which first premiered in 1955 as a one-act play will star Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson who is making her Broadway debut. I had the pleasure of seeing the 1998 revival which starred Anthony LaPaglia, Allison Janney, and Brittany Murphy. It was fantastic. That production also won that years Tony Award for Best Revival. Will lighting strike twice? We will soon find out.

Previews are set to begin at the Cort Theatre on December 28 with an official opening set for January 24, 2010. I expect this show to sell very well and based on the talent involved it should hopefully be well received. By the way the show is only running thru April 4th so don't delay. Get your tickets to see A View From TheBridge on Broadway. It is one of the theatre's best.

OUR TOWN

Thorton Wilder was the winner of three Pulitzer prizes, which is one of the records as far as I know. The prizes were the the book The Bridge at San Luis Rey, the play The Skin of Our Teeth and his most famous work the play Our Town. I have to admit I love plays especially the work of Eugene O'Neil, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Thorton Wilder. I have seen many of the works of the above authors more than 10 times including Our Town.

The current cast of Our Town has received excellent reviews and is rumored to move to Broadway. If you like plays you will definitely enjoy Our Town. There is virtually no scenery in this play but I think this is an asset to the play. I personally this play should be up there with Death of a Salesman, The Iceman Commeth, Streetcar Named Desire, etc, etc.

This is the season when aficionados of Broadway come to New York City to shop and to catch up on all the plays and musicals they missed during the year. I really enjoyed it. I sat on the stage and was about 2 feet from the actors. It is a great bargain and somehing you will never forget.

33 Broadway Shows- A Theater Lover's Delight

Being a ticket agent for Broadway, I like to check out how much money each show takes in every week. Here are some noteworthy items if you have a similar interest or if you're thinking about attending one of the Broadway Shows.

A Steady Rain with Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig is stilling doing 101 % occupancy and is only playing through December 6, 2009 in a strictly limited engagement. The only other sell out show was Jersey Boys.

God of Carnage dropped from 102.2 % occupancy to only 62.5 % last week as the new cast with Jimmy Smits, Annie Potts and Christine Lahti took over in this very funny Best Play of 2009. I think word of mouth will help the new cast sell tickets for sure.

Near sell out shows included Billy Elliot, Wicked, Hamlet (with Jude Law closes December 6, 2009), Bye Bye Birdie and Fela! Ragtime, Rock of Ages, Race, Memphis, Wishful Drinking and The Lion King are all holding their own doing solid business between 80-90 %.

Even though this has been a very tough year for all kinds of ticket sales, especially rock concerts and sporting events, I think that Broadway's 33 shows says an awful lot for the Broadway producers. They always have faith in the consumer and have done a great job in signing star names when casting many shows as well as offer discounted seats for performances that they know most likely will not sell out all their tickets.

Consumers have been looking for bargains this year and Broadway tickets are no exception. It's no secret that ticket prices are higher than ever but if you know how to wait for discounted tickets of admission, you sure can save lots of money.

I'll give you a very good example. As I mentioned earlier, only a few shows sold out last week and one of them is a short term show. This should tell you that the shows need to start to develop a long range plan to sell more tickets and put more money in their advance sales bank account right? Right after most of the tourists go home at year end in a few weeks, the shows will need to be more aggressive with their discount options.

With this in mind, you might want to consider signing up for Broadway discount alerts from one of New York's licensed ticket agencies, Applause Theater Service. These guys really do know how to get new customers and how to keep them for the long term.

For instance, consider checking out their BFV ticket deals. These deals are Applause's way of sharing all the insider discounts they find out about directly from the horses mouth-the show producers themselves.

Applause Ticket Agency has been around forever it seems. Over 22 years anyway so far. They are licensed by NY State (license #71AP1001029) and love talking about tickets and Broadway theater.

If you love Broadway Theater too, what are you waiting for. Ask to be placed on their mailing list if you like. This way you'll be sent the best offerings on Broadway as soon as they come out.

That's all for now. I sincerely hope you find this information helpful and interesting.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

What To See In NYC

Can you believe the year is almost over? I sure can't. Where has the time gone? I started the year out by seeing In The Heights for the third time and now as the year comes to a close I am trying to figure out what show to see to round out 2009. Maybe I'll see Shrek again before it closes. Too soon in my book by the way. How about Chicago? I haven’t seen it since 1997. I enjoyed it back then so maybe it’s time to see how this Broadway institution is holding up.

Excluding a dinner theatre production of Bye Bye Birdie I saw in high school I have never seen the show on Broadway. That is an option too. Who says I have to see a musical? For the first time in years Broadway is alive with some of the best new plays as well as revivals of some of theatres greatest dramas.

From Superior Donuts to Hamlet. To God of Carnage to A View From The Bridge. Broadway has it all. See that’s what is so great about the theatre. So many choices. Which one will you choose? Me. I don’t know yet. But no matter what I can always count on the theatre to give me a night that I will never forget. Until next time theatre fans.

Buying Tickets The Easy Way

When it comes to buying tickets to a Broadway show there are hundreds of ticket companies out there that you can call. Now I'll be honest that ordering tickets can sometimes be a little confusing. But it doesn't have to be. Let's say you want tickets to Wicked or Billy Elliot but are not sure what are the best seats. Just call us and we will get you the best seats and at the best prices. It really is that easy. Now let's say that you and your family are coming to New York and want to see a show but don't want to have to mortgage your house to do it. No problem. Applause has "Insider Deals" for over twenty-five Broadway and Off-Broadway shows including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Now how can you beat that? Look we all know that the economy is not the best right now. Seeing a Broadway show is a luxury for most people. But that doesn't mean that seeing a Broadway show has to cost you and arm and a leg either. I'll be the first to admit that theatre tickets are not cheap. But there are ways around it if you do your homework. The rest is up to you.

Insider's Tip on Buying Group Tickets for Broadway Shows

If you are a group leader that purchases blocks of tickets for Broadway Shows, you may be interested in this blog post. The cost of theater tickets has gone up every year or two for the past many years. Depending on the Broadway Show your group has chosen to see, you may have even been given a discount for group purchases of 20 or more tickets.

All the Broadway Shows love selling group tickets. Firstly they get their money fairly far in advance of the performance date. Secondly, group sales fill up the theater quickly and if a show is very popular, group sales allows for investor payback to happen sooner than later. This all sounds great for the shows and the producers but what about the group leader, travel agency group excursion or church or school group outing that orders their tickets far in advance hoping they will need let's say 40 tickets or so for a show. What happens to them if they only end up needing 20 or 30 of the tickets?

The answer is simple really. They get stuck with tickets as group tickets once paid for are not refundable. So the group leader then has to figure out how they will get rid of the tickets they don't need. Will they need to stand outside the theaters and try to resell the tickets? Can they put them up for sale on the Internet, on eBay or Craigslist? Long story short, most of these groups get stuck with their tickets unfortunately.

So why not consider purchasing only the number of tickets for the people in the group that have paid their money and need the tickets? This way you can't possibly get stuck with tickets you do not need. In this economy, who needs to get stuck with tickets. Once the show starts, the tickets have no value.

Something to consider for those buying group tickets would be to get paid from everyone in your group before you commit to buying tickets for a show. Then also consider the show you want group tickets for. If it is one of the more popular shows that usually "sell out" all their tickets like Wicked, Jersey Boys, or Billy Elliot, then maybe buy a few extra which you can probably resell before the performance date. Or maybe just buy what you need and if your group numbers are increasing, just buy some " a la carte" tickets for the overflow tickets you need.

Being a ticket broker all my life, I can safely say that I have seen lots of group tickets "go dead" because of buying extra tickets that don't end up being used. The theaters don't really mind because they got paid but what about the group that ends up losing money?

One suggestion might be to consider contacting Applause Ticket Agency in New York. Applause Ticket Agency is a NY State licensed ticket broker for every Broadway Show playing. They are not a group ticket agent so their fees may be somewhat higher on certain tickets but they also offer their very unique BFV ticket deals. BFV ticket deals refers to buying below face value. Simply put, Applause gets discount tickets for many shows, adds on a small service fee but you get to buy tickets only when you need them and for exactly how many you need. There is no "getting stuck" with tickets with Applause.

When you buy tickets from group sales, you could lose considerable monies. When you contact Applause, you get exactly what you pay for, and with exceptional service. Just give these guys a call and see for yourself.

If this sounds like an advertisement, well, once in a while we do have to "toot our own horn" don't we?

I hope you find this information helpful. Wherever you buy your tickets, Applause would be happy to talk with you to help you and your group.

CHRISTMAS SHOW & THE ROCKETTES

I know I am going to reveal my age but when I was young we went every year to the Christmas Show. A ticket was 99 cents and it included a first run movie like Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, etc. The only reserved seats were in the First Mezzanine. The rest of us just lined up all around the block with our face in our Mother's or Grandmother's coat as it was usually very cold.

The tickets are a long way from 99 cents and there is no movie. However, there is an incredible difference in prices from one agency to another. I am pretty certain that if you shop around you will find that Applause is the best buy for the Christmas Show. We pass Radio City every day on the way to the bank. Almost every year we see them leading in the animals for the Nativity scene: sheep, lambs, camels, horses, cows, goats etc. (By the way Radio City is the largest Theatre in the world seating over 5000 and is a gem of Art Deco architecture and sculpture and painting. If you are going, try to get there a little earlier so you can see the structure)

However, I diverted from my statement on prices. I am certain that you will be pleased by our prices and by our knowledge of the Christmas Show and Radio City. It is hard to believe but even the Rockettes are affected by the recession. The Rockettes are incredible and I don't just mean it as a man who loves their beautiful, beautiful legs but also as someone who appreciates their choreography and the synchronization of their steps. I have probably seen the March of the Wooden Soldiers over 40 times and it still amazes me every time. All of us are going to be careful with spending this year. Most of us are watching our expenditures and I think our prices will help you spend money on other things. We should also remember the less fortunate this Christmas. After all this is what Christmas is really about.

The Christmas Spectacular ends with the Living Nativity and it is something you will never forget. All of the characters and the animals are live and the Gospel according to St Luke is read. Taking your children or grandchildren is a gift that will remain with them forever.

Let me be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas and may the joys of the Christmas Season and the Christmas Spectacular remain with you forever.

TICKETMASTER / LIVE NATION MERGER

Years ago one could buy tickets by visiting the box office at the theatre or by sending a check with several dates by mail to the box office to fulfill. There was no charge for either of these. Then several companies started fulfilling orders by phone and now also on line. There was a charge for this service even though they were just selling the tickets to the show. There is a service charge and a shipping charge and a handling charge, etc.

The two largest companies in this field are proposing a merger which would virtually give them total control of this market. The European Union has already stated that they will not allow this merger. Unfortunately in the United States, our Congress is always susceptible to lobbyists. Fortunately to date 50 Congressmen have already complained to the Department of Justice.

I think it is in the best interest of every consumer to write his Senators and congressman to request that they tell the Department of Justice that this merger is not in the best interest of the Consumers in the United Sates. You have all seen what a monopoly in the cable area has done to the prices we pay for TV. Imagine what we will be paying for purchasing tickets.

You saw what happened when Ticketmaster purchased TicketsNow. They started putting the tickets on the secondary market rather than selling the tickets at the box office price. If this merger takes place this ticketing giant would gain full access to competitive information in the market and unprecedented control over each aspect of the industry from artist management to concert promotion, including ticket distribution and concession stands. It will prevent competitors from entering the market, thereby creating a monopoly on the industry.

If you love theatre and sporting events and concerts, you should take the time to let Washington, especially the Department of Justice and our Congress know how you feel on this matter,

Have a Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Applause.

A Word of Caution to Purchasers of Group Tickets

Most of the Applause business is for individuals and small groups. However, if you are buying group theater tickets for your school or Church or any large group and are unable to get the tickets you want, please give us a try.

We have gotten so many Help calls from people who have bought tickets from Group Ticket agencies. If you make an order with one of these agencies, they will give you a due date for payment. The problem is if you do not send the money by the due date, your order is cancelled. They do not have the courtesy to call you and tell you that you have missed the due date. They just cancel the order. This can be terribly embarrassing if you are no longer able to provide the tickets to your group after confirming the tickets to them. We just finished getting 50 tickets to Wicked for someone who has been a customer of ours for smaller groups. I can't tell how grateful she was as it was one of her most important customers. We are sending this message out to try to help you avoid this happening to you. Not to drum up business.

It is very important that you pay before your due date. We really don't want you to find yourself in this situation. Many of the people doing this are volunteers who are trying to be helpful. We don't want good people like this to find themselves in this kind of a situation. We do not want it to be a case of "No good deed goes unpunished."

I hope you find this information helpful.

How to Buy Last Minute Jersey Boys tickets in New York City

I just got off the phone with Karen from upstate New York. Karen has been searching the Internet for hours today trying to obtain tickets for Jersey Boys at the August Wilson Theater for this Saturday November 21, 2009. The 2pm performance.

Apparently she found seats that she liked from one of the dozens of web sites around except the ticket prices were over $200.00 each in the front mezzanine. When she asked me what I thought about the company she was going to buy from, I said I have heard of them. However before filling out her credit card and personal information on their shopping cart page form, I suggested that she make sure there were no "extra fees" for securing the seats. Unfortunately, until you give up your personal information and credit number, Karen really wouldn't know the final price to pay. This made her feel uncomfortable as often ticket company web sites display a "loss leader" price then tack on allot of fees. Especially for a hard to get show like Jersey Boys in New York.

I decided to do some research for Karen as our company Applause Ticket Agency in New York City is always looking to make a new customer whenever we can. As luck would have it, I simply made a call and within a few minutes was able to get the 5 tickets my new customer wanted. And in the first and second rows of the front mezzanine center section. These seats are often sold as premium seats commanding over $300 a piece. Instead I was able to purchase them for less than half that, add on a small service charge and sell them to Karen for the $175.00 she originally had in her budget to pay.

Jersey Boys may indeed be one of the hottest and most popular shows ever to play on Broadway. Still most folks don't want to fork over $200 to $300 a ticket. Why should people overpay for the experience of seeing a Broadway Show?

I'm a sales person but I'm also a consumer. I think it is about time that consumers shop around and call company after company to find the best prices and service. Don't you?

There are a ton of ticket companies out there. The questions I would ask if I were a consumer in need of Broadway tickets is simple really.

1. Can I talk with a local ticket expert that will give me as much time and information needed to make a decision?

2. Will they disclose the "face value" printed on the ticket?

3. Will I receive an email confirmation for my purchase?

4. Was the cancellation policy explained?

These questions and anything else you feel you might need to ask of the ticket agency are all fair questions for sure. Just make sure you feel comfortable with the person you are about to buy tickets from.

And enjoy the live Broadway experience. I hope this information was helpful to you and others in your life.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone

Race To Begin Performances Tonight.

Let the F Bombs begin. David Mamet's newest work Race will make it's official Broadway debut tonight at the Barrymore Theatre. The show which is also being directed by Mr. Mamet stars stars Emmy Award winner James Spader (Boston Legal, Sex, Lies and Videotape),Tony nominee and television star David Alan Grier (A Soldier’s Story, In Living Color,Kerry Washington(Ray, Lakeview Terrace) and Richard Thomas(TheWaltons,Democracy, Twelve Angry Men).

Speculation about the show has been running rampant ever since it was first announced a few months ago. Here is a quote about the show from Mr. Manet from the New York Times."In my play a firm made up of three lawyers, two black and one white, is offered the chance to defend a white man charged with a crime against a black young woman. It is a play about lies." He added: "All drama is about lies. When the lie is exposed, the play is over."

Sounds like it could be an interesting night in the theatre. I will be back next week to give you my full review of the show. Until next time theatre fans.

22 Years Later:Is Phantom Still Worth It?

The first time I saw The Phantom of the Opera was in March 1993. I was in my first year of acting school and we received free tickets as part of our school's program. That was also the last time I saw the show. Until last week. Growing up the cast recording to the show was one of my favorites. Seeing the show for the first time I knew going in I was probably going to like it. After all I loved the music and had been wanting to see the show for a long time. It did not disappoint. Now while I enjoyed the show I just never got around to seeing it again until now. Going in I wondered if the show would be as fresh and interesting all these years later.

I have to say I enjoyed it as much as I did sixteen years ago. Is it my favorite show? No. But you do get your money's worth. It is still one of the most romantic shows on Broadway. Look a show doesn't last this long for nothing right. Now how much longer the show will last I really couldn't tell you. As I'm sure you have already heard a sequel to Phantom, Love Never Dies, is set to open in London this Spring with a Broadway opening next Fall. Will lighting strike twice? We will soon find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Everybody Loves Hair

As an office of theatregoers we often don't agree on a lot of things. However there is one thing we do agree on. The new production of Hair is a winner. Now before I saw Hair I didn't know that much about it except for a few songs and that it took place in the 1960's. Let me just get it out right now. The show blew me away. The cast is one of the finest ensembles you will ever see on Broadway and the score is one of the most moving and enjoyable you will ever hear.

I'll admit I wasn't too sure if I was going to like it at first. Yes I know reviews from the Summer 2008 Shakespeare in the Park were outstanding and word of mouth was good. That doesn't mean I was going to like it. I tend not to go to shows that are that over hyped because in most case's they really don't live up to my expectations. That is why I never saw The Producers. That and because Nathan Lane annoys me.

The show which won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival still continues to do very good business eight shows a week at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre. If you haven't seen the show yet I highly recommend you do on your next visit. You will love it. I know I did.

See Memphis in New York, on Broadway Of Course

For my money, one of the best shows of the 2009/2010 Broadway season is a 1950's rock n' roll musical called Memphis The Musical. It is one of the most energetic musical performances I've personally ever seen on a Broadway stage.

Memphis The Musical takes place in the racially charged South in the 1950's. A local white radio DJ by the name of Huey Calhoun, who has an incredible love for great music, crosses the usual racial boundaries at the time and tries desperately to help a local black singer make it to the big time. He falls for her in the process and the audience gets to witness the difficulties in getting a simple thing like what was referred to at the time as "race" music played over the air waves. Although it took quite some time, change in the way people thought about music was starting to turn around. As we all know, sometimes when change does come around, there is often a price to pay for the participants. In the show, it is Huey and his girl Felicia Farrell who might suffer the consequences.

Speaking of Felicia Farrell, the role is played by Montego Glover. She does a beautiful job and has a fantastic voice. Chad Kimball plays the role of Huey Calhoun. He's an awesome performer and might just win the coveted Tony Award in 2010 for Best Actor in a Musical. Stay tuned, right now I think he's in the lead.

The staging is quite creative as we get to explore the radio stations, recording studios and rock clubs in Memphis. We have David Gallo, the set designer to thank for this. Joe Pietro wrote the Book and Lyrics with Music and Lyrics by David Bryan (the keyboardist in Bon Jovi). Mr. Bryan also has another musical playing Off Broadway called Toxic Avenger. Sergio Trujillo has done an exceptional job with the choreography in Memphis.

Memphis is a real look into the emotions that were playing out at the time. Songs like "Underground" and "Steal Your Rock n' Roll" will stay with you long after the show is over. Although the "racial" theme of Memphis The Musical might seem somewhat "heavy" for some folks, I can personally assure you that the story is told in such a way as to not offend anyone that might wish to see it. In fact it is done quite tastefully I might add.

If you like, Applause Ticket Agency in New York can obtain tickets for Memphis The Musical for you at below face value prices. I'm Going to see White Christmas on Broadway

Dear Theater Friends,

I just picked up my seats for this years seasonal White Christmas show at New York's Marriott Marquis Theater. I saw the show last year around the same time and thought this would make a great show to reprise each year. And I guess the producers of the show felt it was a good idea too.

This years White Christmas will play a limited 64 performances from November 13, 2009 through January 3, 2010. White Christmas is based on the age-old classic film Irving Berlin's White Christmas. The story is a simple one and aims to please its audience. Two former veterans of war and now a tag-team show business attraction, meet up with two sisters who have a song and dance act of their own and put on a show to help their former military commander out of hard financial times. What may seem like a difficult moment or two lets the theater-goer witness some excellent Broadway singing, dancing, lots of great laughs and some "boy-girl" matchmaking as well.

White Christmas's book for this musical is written by David Ives and Paul Blake with superb choreography by Randy Skinner and direction by Walter Bobbie (Chicago The Musical). The show runs a little under 2 and 1/2 hours long with one intermission. This is a real family type show so no one should have a problem taking youngsters along with you.

And if you consider buying tickets before the show is officially reviewed, you might be able to obtain tickets at below face value for White Christmas. As the show is coming into New York in the midst of a recession, the producers are offering discount tickets of admission as long as you select an off-peak performance.

Applause Ticket Agency in New York (License #71AP1001029) is a licensed New York State ticket broker. They can be a great resource to get wonderful seats for White Christmas and every other Broadway Show. Their contact information is below.

I hope you find this information helpful today.

God of Carnage on Broadway Welcomes a New Cast

Here's some great news I hope you find helpful regarding God of Carnage playing on Broadway in New York City. On Sunday, November 15, 2009 it will be the last performance with star cast members James Gandolfini, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden. I saw the show several months ago and found it very funny. Most of you know that God of Carnage won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2009 and an award for Ms. Harden for Best Actress. I waited outside the theater for autographs the night I saw the show and everyone but Mr. Gandolfini greeted their fans at the stage door of the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. The three other leads were quite gracious in taking their time on a night of bad New York weather to sign autographs and chat with everyone that waited for them.

God of Carnage may have a funny kind of name but the show is a big success story on Broadway. Just about every performance has sold out all their inventory since the show began.

God of Carnage is what some might call a "black comedy". It is a new play written by Yasmina Reza and shows us what can possibly happen when two sets of parents try to come to grips with helping to settle a fight that happened at school between their two sons. What starts out to be a civilized parental get together at one of their homes ends up being anything but a calm and rational solution. Unless of course you consider calling each other names and picking an adult fight "civilized". The aftermath is very funny and at times borders on hysterical. The show is only 90 minutes and doesn't have an intermission.

Now let me tell you about the exciting new cast change taking place in God of Carnage on November 17, 2009. Television's Annie Potts (making her Broadway debut) and Jimmy Smits (LA Law, NYPD Blue and lots of television, stage and film) will perform as one of the couples and Ken Stott (an original London cast member) and Christine Lahti (The Heidi Chronicles, Third which is Wendy Wasserstein's final play and lots of television and film) play the other set of parents.

I don't know if God of Carnage will be reviewed with the new cast. If you have not had the opportunity to see God of Carnage or think you might want to see it with the new cast members, consider calling Applause Theater Service, a local ticket agency in New York City.

Right now Applause has a very special offer to get you excellent seats at prices that are below face value. You simply ask for the BFV ticket deal, give them your credit card and a few days later your tickets will be at your doorstep. The special offer is good for November 17, 2009 through February 28, 2010 and except with a Saturday evening or holiday ticket request, it looks like the BFV ticket deal will score you great seats at excellent prices.

This may sound too good to be true but sometimes it's the local experts in New York that come up with really good ticket deals. Shop around and see for yourself friends.

Applause can be reached out to at 800-451-9930 or locally in New York at 212-307-7050 seven days a week.

Take care now.

Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone
