What To See In 2018 Part 3

CatsMy Fair Lady
Vivian Beaumont Theatre
1st Preview: March 15, 2018
Opens: April 19, 2018

Yesterday I wrote a blog about this show. Look let's face it. My Fair Lady is a classic, and quite frankly it's been way too long since this beloved musical as seen the bright lights of Broadway. Therefore I for one am looking forward to seeing this beloved musical back on Broadway for the first time in almost twenty-five years.

Now believe it or not but I have never seen the show before. Oh sure I've seen the Academy Award winning film, as well as read the show's Tony Award winning libretto. But I have never seen the show live on stage. Finally here's my chance.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts 1 and 2
Lyric Theatre
1st Preview: March 16, 2018
Opens: April 22, 2018

Now I'll be honest. I have never read any of the harry Potter books, nor have I seen any of the award winning films. But even I know this is going to be the event of the system. Tickets for the two- part show has been selling like crazy ever since it went on sale in early October. Now that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. It just means they may be a little more expensive than other shows.

The Iceman ComethNow I know nothing about this show except for what I read online. From what I can gather, Rocktopia is a nutshell "Broadway meets Rock and Roll". Featuring a slew of Broadway and recording artists, a five piece rock band, a twenty piece orchestra, and a choir of forty, Rocktopia poses the idea that if Mozart and Beethoven were alive today, they would be rock stars. Sounds logical to me.

Now I have been going to Broadway shows for the better part of two decades. Thankfully because of the industry I work in, I have been lucky to see a lot of shows for free, or at a substantial discount. However I know for a fact that this show will not be offering any kind of discount.

Why? Well it may have something do with the fact that the show is starring Tony and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington. Which means it's time to break open that old piggy bank of mine. Trust me. It will be worth it.

Well that includes Part 3 in my ongoing series on the 2017-2018 Broadway season. Stay tuned for Part 4 next week. Until next time theatre fans.

Christmas Is Just Days Away

Image result for christmas in new york logoThat's right theatre fans. Christmas is almost here. Now I don't know about you, but Christmas has always been on of my favorite holiday's. In fact, one of my favorite theatre memories happened during my first Christmas in New York. On that night, I saw She Loves Me at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

Now for those of you that aren't familiar with the show, it takes place during the Christmas holidays. I mean can you think of a better way to celebrate the holiday? I sure can't. After the show, I headed to Rockefeller Center to see the tree. What a perfect night!

Now believe it or not, but in all the years that I have lived in New York, I have never been to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Oh well. I'm sure I will see it someday. I mean it's not like it's going anywhere right? Let's hope not. That's the great thing about New York during the holiday's. There is something for everyone. Happy Holidays!

Unlike several of my co-workers, I am not a big Jimmy Buffet fan. Don't get me wrong. I like some of his music. I mean anyone that came up with a song about eating cheeseburgers on a tropical island is o.k. in my book. The show, which features a book by Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope), and Mike O'Malley (Glee,Yes Dear), tells the story of Tully, a part-time bartender/singer who meets and falls and love with a overly ambitious tourist named Rachel, who makes Tully question his entire future. Hmmm. Maybe I will check it out. Plus it's being directed by Tony winner Christopher Ashley, who won the award for directing my favorite show from last season, Come From Away.

Broadway New Year's Schedule

Image result for new years eve logoThat's right theater fan's. It's almost time to say goodbye to 2017, and hello to 2018. And what better way to ring in the new year than by seeing a Broadway show.

Now as I'm sure you know, very few shows play on New Year's Eve. In fact the only two that are playing are Once On This Island at 3pm, and Junk at 7pm.

The good news, is that there are nine shows playing on New Year's Day, including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Oh and did I mention that we will be selling tickets to each and every one of those shows? Well we will.. Not only that, but are phone lines will be open for both days.

How many companies do you know that offer that kind of service? Not too many my friends. So why not give us a try? You'll be glad you did. Happy New Year's!

Phantom Winter Sale

The Phantom of the OperaThat's right theatre fans. Now is the best time to see Broadway's longest running show. The Phantom of the Opera, which will celebrate it's thirtieth anniversary next month on the Great White Way, is now available at prices that are lower than any other time of the year. Growing up in Illinois, the show was a personal favorite of mine.

So imagine how excited I was, when I finally got the chance to see the show just a few months after arriving here. Suffice to say I loved it. Now did I ever think I would still be writing about the show all these years later? No. Trust me. I'm probably not the only one. Yet here we are all these years later, and the show is just as popular as it was thirty years ago. Who would have thought?

Now as I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, it is now possible to see this award wining musical at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru February 25, 2018, it is not good for Saturday evening performances, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see The Phantom on the Opera on Broadway at the Majestic Theater on Broadway. You will love it. Until next time theatre fans.

J'S Top Ten Shows Of 2017

Image result for top ten logoWhere oh where has the time gone? Can you believe that the year is almost over? I sure can't. Which brings me to today's blog. Every year, numerous publications like Time Magazine and the New York Times publish their year end lists of their favorite theatre shows.

Therefore, I figured I would share with you my favorite productions from this year. Also note that this list is not limited to only shows that opened this year, but simply a list of ones that I have seen in 2017. Enjoy!

1.) Avenue Q-. An oldie, but a goodie. Winner of the 2003 Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year, Avenue Q remains one of the funniest shows in town.

2.) Oslo- Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Play of the Year, unfortunately only played for a limited run. I for one am glad I got to see it before it was too late.

3.) School of Rock- After more than two years on Broadway, I finally got around to seeing it. All I can say is, "It was well worth the wait!"

4.) Cruel Intentions: The Musical- Now I know what you're thinking. They made a musical out of one of the 90's most classic films? You know what? It was a genius idea. The show is only playing thru January 29 so get your tickets now.

5.) Beautiful- Another long running musical that I had still never seen until now. Jukebox musicals have always been sort of hit or miss with me. I loved Jersey Boys. Mamma Mia? Not so much. How about Beautiful? I loved it. Enough said.

6.) Waitress- The movie is a favorite of mind. Hard to believe it's been ten years since this wonderful film captured the heart's of millions around the world. Thanks to it's writers and the rest of it's creative team, Waitress The Musical has continued to do the same eight times a week on Broadway.

7.) Miss Saigon- Growing up in Illinois, I wasn't exposed to a lot of theater except for the shows I starred in during high school. Thank goodness for my teachers who introduced me to shows like this one. Twenty-five years after seeing it for the first time, Miss Saigon still remains one of my favorite shows.

8.) A Doll's House Part 2- Now I 'll admit that I was a little hesitant about seeing the show. Not that I'm sure it wasn't going to be good. After all, it was starring Academy Award winner Chris Cooper, and Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf, who would go on to win a Tony Award for her performance. My concern was that I had never seen A Dolls House. Of course I worried for nothing. It was brilliant.

9.) Prince Of Broadway- Let's face it. Without Harold Prince, the Broadway landscape as we know it today would be very different. Harold Prince is what Broadway is all about. One of the most enjoyable evenings I have had in the theatre in a very long time.

10.) Hamilton- I know what you're thinking. The most successful musical of the past decade was your tenth favorite show of the year? No. I was simply just saving the best for last. Now nothing will ever top Rent as my favorite show of all time. But this one is a close second.

So there you have it. My top ten shows of 2017. How many have you seen? Oh and don't forget that Applause sells tickets for all of these shows. Well those that are still running of course. Live theatre. There is nothing like it. Until next time theatre fans.

Get Tickets To See Anastasia On Broadway For Less

AnastasiaStill haven't seen Anastasia yet? Well theatre fans there is no better time than right now. The show, which is based on the award winning 1997 film, premiered in 2016 at the Hartford Stage prior to it's Broadway premier in April 2017. Now I have never seen the film. No big shock there as I am not a big fan of animated films. Especially the musical ones. But who cares what I think right? The show is doing just fine without me.

In fact since the show opened, it has constantly grossed over a million dollars a week at the box office. I guess it's a hit. Now that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. In fact if you call right now, you can get tickets to this enchanting musical at prices that can't be beat. Farinelli And The King Now In Previews At The Belasco Theatre

Farinelli and the KingThat's right theatre fans. One of this season's most highly anticipated new shows is ready to take the Great White Way by storm. Farinelli and the King, which stars three-time Tony Award winner and one-time Academy Award winner Mark Rylance, began previews last night at the Belasco Theatre, with opening night scheduled for December 17.

The show, which will play a limited engagement thru March 25, 2018, premiered at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre in February 2015, prior to it's acclaimed sold-out run at the Duke of York Theatre from September to December 2015. A few months ago I posted a blog about the show and what it's about.

After all it's important to know what you are spending your hard earned money on right? Now the truth is, the show is selling very, very well. Which means that tickets are a little more expensive than most shows.

Now don't worry theatre fans. It's not as expensive like Hamilton or Dear Evan Hansen. But it's not cheap either. Thankfully we sell it. Well that and every new play and musical this season. Get your tickets to see Farinelli and the King on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre. Expect the show to be a big contender at this year's Tony Awards. Until next time theatre fans.

That's right theatre fans. The wait is finally over. SpongeBob SquarePants is officially open. Well in six hours that is. Now I have never seen one episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. Not one. But even I know that this show is going to be hit! Here's hoping the critic's think so too.

The show, which premiered in June 2016 at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago, began previews at the historic Palace Theatre on November 6. The new musical, which is conceived and directed by Tina Landau, features a score by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, and Cyndi Lauper.

Now for those of you who want tickets to see the show, I have some exciting news. We sell it. Not too bad I think. Oh sure there were a few that weren't crazy about it. But let's face it. Critic's don't hold the same power they used too. Plus it's not like this show needed raves across the board to succeed. The show already has a record breaking advance sale of over seven million dollars. Take that critic's!

By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you are in luck. We sell it. Well that and every other show both On and Off-Broadway. Get your tickets to see Meteor Shower on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

New Play The Parisian Woman Starring Uma Thurman To Open Tonight On Broadway

The Parisian WomanThat's right theatre fans. One of this season's most highly anticipated new shows is ready to take the Great White Way by storm. The Parisian Woman, which is written by Beau Willimon (House of Cards), who by the way is making his Broadway debut, officially opens tonight at the Hudson Theatre.

Starring Academy, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award nominee Uma Thurman, and film and television star Josh Lucas, The Parisian Woman is based on Henry Becque’s late 19th century comedy La Parisienne. However this version takes place in President Trump's Washington D.C. as opposed to 19th Century France.

It was also announced that the show will change from week to week based on the coming and goings in our Nation's capitol. Why do I have a feeling the show will be changing quite a lot? I guess we'll see. The ninety minute play, which is directed by Tony winner Pam McKinnon (Edward Albee's Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?), will play a limited engagement thru March 11, 2018.

By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you are in luck. We sell it. In fact if you call now, you can get tickets to see The Parisian Woman at some incredible rates.Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru January 14, 2018, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see The Parisian Woman on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Meteor Shower To Open Tonight On Broadway

Image result for meteor shower broadway logoWhen I first moved to New York City all I wanted to see were  e musicals. Oh sure if I got a free ticket to see a play I would go. After all a free ticket is a free ticket. However in the last ten years or so, I would rather see a play than some splashy Broadway musical. My how times change right? Now the one show that I am really looking forward to seeing this season is Meteor Shower. Which is the reason for today's blog.

The show, which is written by Steve Martin, officially opens tonight at the Booth Theatre. Making her Broadway debut along side Tony winner Laura Benanti, Tony nominee Jeremy Shamos, and Emmy winner Keegan-Michael Key, who is also making his Broadway debut, is Emmy winner Amy Schumer. Now that's what I call a first rate cast. So what's the show all about? Well I'll tell you.

Meteor Shower is set in Ojai, California, on a hot night. Corky (Schumer) and her husband, Norm (Shamos), are having another couple over for dinner. However, Gerald (Key) and Laura (Benanti) aren't looking for a casual evening of polite small talk with new friends. Instead, the two couples find themselves in a marital free-fall matched in velocity and peril only by the smoldering space rocks tearing through the sky.

Well I'm sold. Oh and if that wasn't enough to entice you, the show is being directed by four-time Tony Award Jerry Zaks. Who by the way has two other shows running on Broadway. Hello Dolly! and A Bronx Tale. Not bad huh? By the way for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you are in luck. We sell it. Well that and every other show both On and Off-Broadway. Get your tickets to see Meteor Shower on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. Who knows? You just might see me there. Until next time theatre fans.
