Playwright And Actor Sam Shepard Passes Away At The Age Of 73

Sad news theatre fans. One of the theatre's greatest playwrights has died. Sam Shepard, who won a Pulitzer Prize for Buried Child, passed away on July 27 at the age of 73, following complications from ALS. Other notable works include True West, Fool For Love, A Lie Of The Mind, and Curse of the Starving Class.

Besides being an award winning playwright, Mr. Shepard was also a critically acclaimed actor, who's work spanned over five decades with such hits like The Right Stuff, Steel Magnolias, The Pelican Brief, Blackhawk Down, and The Notebook. In 1994 he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. He is survived by his children Jesse, Hannah, and Walker Shepard, and his sisters Sandy and Roxanne Rogers.

New Cast To Begin Performances Tonight In A Doll's House Part 2

That's right theatre fans. One of last season's most critically acclaimed shows is set to welcome a new set of stars. A Doll's House Part 2, which was nominated for eight 2017 Tony Awards including Best Play of the Year, takes place immediately following the final scene of A Doll House, where Nora Helmer, storms out after discovering her husband's betrayal.

Joining the cast are Tony winner Julie White (The Little Dog Laughed, Airline Highway) as Nora Helmer, Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences, Manchester By The Sea), as Torvald Helmer, Erin Wilhelmi (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as Emmy, the daughter of Nora and Tovah. Tony winner Jayne Houdyshell (The Humans) will continue in the role of the Helmer family servant.

Final Week's For Broadway's On Your Feet

Still haven't seen On Your Feet? Well you better hurry theatre fans because time is running out. The show, which is based on the lives of Grammy winner Gloria Estefan and her husband producer and musician Emilio Estefan, will play it's final performance at the Marquis Theatre on August 20. When it closes it will have played a total of thirty-four previews and seven hundred and forty-six performances.

Now I'll be honest, when I was invited to see the show in October 2015, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. Well I am happy to say that I was wrong once again. What a great night in the theatre. Thankfully I wasn't the only one who thought that, since the show opened to rave reviews from critic's audiences alike. Now here we are almost two years later and the show is preparing to take it's final bow.

Now that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. In fact if you call right now, you can get tickets to see On Your Feet at prices that can't be beat. Michael Moore's The Terms Of My Surrender Now In Previews

That's right theatre fans. Everyone's favorite documentary filmmaker and author is headed to the Great White Way. Well not every one's favorite. After all our current president is not exactly a big fan. Although I have heard that Mr. Moore has set aside a seat for our current president if he would like to see the show. Somehow I don't expect he will be attending anytime soon.

The show, which is being directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), will officially open at the Belasco Theatre on August 10. As of now the show is scheduled to close on October 22. Although if reviews are good I would not be surprised if it extends. Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen Recoups

That's right theatre fans. One of last season's biggest hits is now officially in the black. Dear Evan Hansen, which won six 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Musical of the Year, has recouped it's entire investment of $9.5 million dollars in eight and a half months.

Not only that, but since it has opened it has continued to gross over a million dollars at the box office week after week. Now that's what I call a hit. Now I know what you're thinking. It must be impossible to get tickets right?

Broadway Production Of Wicked Makes History

That's right theatre fans. One of the Great White Way's most successful shows is in the news once again. Wicked, which will celebrate it's fourteenth year on Broadway this Fall, has reached another milestone. As of July 9, the show has surpassed The Phantom of the Opera to become the second highest grossing show in Broadway history.

Since the show opened in October 2003, it has grossed over one billion dollars at the box office. So who is number one? Why none other than Disney's The Lion King, which will celebrate it's twentieth anniversary this November. Now the only question is will the Wicked Witch of the West ever topple the once and future king? I guess we'll find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Final Week For Broadway's Oslo

Carole King Coming To A Cinema Near You

I know what you're thinking. The hit Broadway musical Beautiful is headed to the big screen right? Not so fast theatre fans. Although it may be the closest thing to actually seeing a movie version of the award winning musical.

Carole King: Tapestry-Captured Live at Hyde Park London, is set to premier on July 11, were it is scheduled to play at theatres around the United Stares. The hour and forty minute film, was recorded at her 2016 concert at Hyde Park, that was attended by over sixty-five thousand people.
