Exciting news theatre fans. Tony winner, and Broadway legend Mandy Patinkin is joining the cast of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Wait a minute. Not so fast. Less than twenty-four hours after the acclaimed actor was announced to take over the leading role of Pierre from fellow actor Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan, he issued the following statement to the New York Times.
“My understanding of the show’s request that I step into the show is not as it has been portrayed and I would never accept a role knowing it would harm another actor,” Mr. Patinkin said. “I hear what members of the community have said and I agree with them. I am a huge fan of Oak and I will, therefore, not be appearing in the show.”
Mr Pantinkin was scheduled to begin performances on August 15 and play thru September 3. It was also announced that Mr. Onaodowan, who took over for Tony nominee Josh Groban on July 11, will not be returning to the production. While sales have dropped since Mr. Groban departed on July 2, the show continues to gross high numbers at the box office. Here's hoping this latest controversy won't effect ticket sales, and the show will continue to run for the foreseeable future. Until next time theatre fans.
