New Musical Leap of Faith To Open Tonight On Broadway

This past Friday I had the pleasure of seeing the new musical Leap of Faith. The show which opens tonight at the St. James Theatre is based on the 1992 movie starring Steve Martin. Being in the ticket business we are often invited to see all the new shows. That way when someone calls and wants to know what I think of a certain show I can give them my honest opinion. Now having never seen the movie I wasn't sure what to expect. The one thing I knew going in was that playing the Steve Martin role was four-time Tony nominee Raul Esparza. Other than that I went in with an open mind. Well guess what? I loved it. From the very beginning I was hooked. If there is any justice in this world the show will receive multiple Tony nominations next week including Best Musical along with Best Actor, Best Featured Actor and Actress and Beat Score. Keep your fingers crossed. Get your tickets to see Leap of Faith on Broadway. It is a must see my friends.

2012 Radio City Christmas Spectacular Now On Sale

That's right theatre fans. Christmas is just around the corner. Yes I know it's still eight months away but trust me my friends. It will be here before you know it. Now in it's 79th year the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is set to begin performances on November 9 and run thru December 30. Now believe it or not but in the 20 + years that I have lived in New York I have never seen the show. In fact until two years ago I had never seen anything at Radio City Music Hall. I guess I need to get out more. Having said that I am almost sure I would probably love it if I saw it. I just always felt it is one of those things you need to see with someone else or a least wait until I get married and have a family. Luckily for me I'm still a young guy so I am sure that I will see it one day. I mean it's not like it's going anywhere anytime soon. Now for those of you who need tickets to this years Radio City Christmas Spectacular you have come to the right place. Good seats are now available for all performances. Get your tickets to see the 2012 Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Your holidays won't be the same without it.

What To See This Spring In NYC

Can you believe that May is almost here? Although it sure doesn't feel like it outside. It was forty-nine degrees when I left for work this morning. Please don't tell me we are going to go skip Spring all together and go right to Summer. Stranger things have happened. Now I know you didn't come here to get a weather report so on with the real reason for my blog. As we speak there are over seventy-five shows playing both On and Off-Broadway. Of course you are going to want to see all of them right? Well maybe not all of them. Five or six should be enough. The big question of course is which ones do you see? I guess you could pick some of the newer hit shows like The Book of Mormon or War Horse. Although truth be told those tow aren't so new anymore. How about such long running hits like The Lion King or Jersey Boys? Or maybe you would prefer something Off-Broadway like Rent or Avenue Q? Both of which enjoyed long runs on Broadway. who says you have to see a musical?  Right now Broadway is alive with some of the best new plays as well as revivals of some of theatres greatest shows of all time. See that’s what is so great about the theatre. So many choices. Which one will you choose? Me. I don’t know yet. But no matter what I can always count on the theatre to give me a night that I will never forget.

Customer Story

This week's customer story comes all the way from New City, New York. No that is not a typo. There actually is a town called New City. Who knew? I sure didn't. Anyway this past Thursday I received a call from a gentleman who was looking for tickets to see Porgy and Bess in June. I told him that should not be a problem as the show while well received has been playing since last December. I even told him that I would probably be able to get him good seats for less. While he appreciated that he told me that price wasn't an issue as he was really looking for seats in the first ten rows of the Orchestra. For those of you who don't know those are usually Premium seats which while may be a little more are more center and of course closer to the stage. However after I told him that I had been in the theatre many times myself I suggested that the better seats for viewing in that theatre is the Front Mezzanine as he would still be very close to the stage and still have a great view. Plus it would be less than a Premium seat. Well he loved that. After all was said and done I was able to get him two center seats in the first row and at a rate that he has seen anywhere else. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

My Thoughts On The Ticket Industry As A Whole

Having worked in the ticket industry for over fourteen years now I can say honestly say that I have done and seen it all. From working at a Broadway box office to selling tickets at Applause I have had the great pleasure of helping thousands of people from all walks of life with all their ticket needs. Now while the job may have changed a few times over the years there is one thing they all have in common. Customer service. Now we can all agree that without good customer service most businesses would not be as successful.

The truth is that whether you are buying tickets to a Broadway show or ordering a meal at a restaurant it is all the same. I mean I don't know about you but I would never buy anything from a company that doesn't give you the respect or the attention that you deserve. Now we all know that going to a Broadway a show or even an Off-Broadway show nowadays can be expensive.I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that we are the only game in town. We're not.In fact in New York City alone there are at least twenty to twenty-five ticket companies with hundreds more around the country.

Now of those ticket agents I would say more than half of those are licenced by their respective states. The truth is you can spend all day researching different sites trying to find the best deal. In fact I recommend that you do. We all know that nobody buys on their first call. I myself like to do a little investigating when I am purchasing anything. In this economy it just makes sense right? I suggest you shop around and by all means take your time. Then do what is best for you for you. It's your money.

Disney's The Lion King Celebrates Milestone

Those of you who have read my past blogs know that I am not the biggest Disney fan in the world. The truth is I have never seen The Lion King. I take that back. I saw Act One although to be honest I don't remember much about it except for the animals coming down the aisles during the first ten minutes of the show. That being said the show is here to stay my friends. No matter what I think of it. Which brings me to the reason for today's blog. At exactly 2pm today The Lion King will celebrate it's 6000th performance. Not only that but last week the show became the highest grossing Broadway show of all time surpassing Broadway's longest running show The Phantom of the Opera. The show which won six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 13. 1997 prior to moving to the Minskoff Theatre in June of 2006 where it continues to play to packed audiences eight times a week. Get your tickets to see The Lion King on Broadway. Oh sure it may not be my cup of tea but it just might be yours.

Six Years and Counting Jersey Boys Is Still The Show To See On Broadway

Still haven't seen Jersey Boys yet? Well what on earth are you waiting for people? There is no better time than right now. The show which opened to rave reviews when it opened in December 2005 continues to fill the August Wilson Theatre eight times a week. In fact last week the show grossed over a million dollars at the box office. Not bad for a show that opened six and a half years ago. I can't tell you how much I loved the show when I first saw it. Now granted that was two years after it opened. Not that I couldn't get a ticket. We get invited to everything. Just one of the many perks of working at Applause. I just didn't have any desire to see it. Too much hype I guess. Well cut to two years later and I went to see it. Chalk it up to not having anything to do on Halloween. I can't believe I waited so long. What was I thinking? It lived up to it's hype and then some. What an amazing night at the theatre. So like I said before. What are you waiting for people? Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. You will have the time of your life. I know I did.

Customer Story

This week's customer story comes all the way from the great state of Pennsylvania. Mc Kees Rocks to be exact. Don't feel bad. I've never heard of it either. Last Thursday I received a call from one of our regular travel agents who needed to book tickets for one of her best clients. I asked her her when she would be here and what she wanted to see. Of course at the top of her list was The Book of Mormon. Not only is it Broadway's most popular show but also it's most expensive.

Luckily after a little research I was able to find two tickets in the Rear Mezz at the bargain price of $255 each. Yes I said Rear Mezz which by the way in that theatre is still a good view as it only seats 1,066. Pretty small theatre for a musical don't you think? Anyway after taking care of the most difficult of the three shows I set out to find her good tickets for the other two. Her next choice was Memphis. The 2010 Tony ward winner for Best Musical of the Year.

Now while the show remains a crowd favorite is has been playing for quite a long time. Therefore I knew that not only would I be able to get excellent seats but probably for below cost. Guess what? I did. Two shows down. One to go. Last but not least was How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Now while the show has slowed down a bit I figured I would once again be able to get good seats for less.

However since this was show was very important to her client's granddaughter the price wasn't so much important as the seats. When all was said and done I was able to get her excellent seats in the second row of the Front Mezz on the aisle. Plus at a price that was lower than she had seen anywhere else. So there we have it folks. Three shows at three amazing prices. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Musical Revivals Are The Thing On Broadway This Year

Believe it or not but there are currently seven musical revivals playing on the Great White Way. They are Anything Goes,Chicago,How To Succced In Businesss Without Really Trying,Evita,Godspell,Jesus Christ Superstar, and Porgy and Bess. The last four of which opened this season. Now of all the shows listed the only ones that I have seen are Chicago and Superstar. Not that I'm sure the others aren't good. I just haven't gotten around to seeing them yet.

The longest running revival as well as the longest running American musical is Chicago which opened back in the fall of 1996. Has it really been that long? I remember seeing it back in 1997 and while I loved it I never expected to still be talking about it all these years later.Say what you want about producers Barry and Fran Weissler but they know how to keep a show running. Next up is last year's Tony Award winner for Best Revival.

No it wasn't How To Succeed. It was Anything Goes. The show which also won Tony's for Best Actress and Best Choreography continues to delight audiences eight times a week at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Now to be honest I didn't expect How To Succeed to continue after the departure of Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. However thanks to the casting of Glee's Darren Criss and popstar Nick Jonas the show has stuck around.

Which brings me to Godspell, Evita, and Porgy and Bess. Now of the three the ones with the best reviews were Porgy and Bess. Of course it helps having two loved Broadway veteran like Norm Lewis and four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald. The show which opened in December is now on sale thru September 30. Now while Godspell did not get the greatest reviews it has managed to stick around mostly do to low overhead and because it is one of the few shows on Broadway that the whole family can enjoy.

Evita which was a big hit in London opened last week to good notices for it's leading lady and while she may be great we all know the real reason people are going in droves to see the show. Two words. Ricky Martin. Now the big question is who will win this year's Tony Award for Best Revival. My guess is that it will be between Evita and Follies which closed back in January following an acclaimed run. Nominations are set to be announced on May 1 with Tony night scheduled for Sunday June 10. Should be an interesting award season. Until next time theatre fans.

London Theatre

Lately we have been getting a lot of requests for tickets in London. Look I'm not complaining. The more phone calls we get the better it is for business. Now while there are some hot new shows such as Matilda The Musical as well as long running hits such as War Horse and Billy Elliot my guess is the Olympics might have something to do with it too. Makes sense to me. Between the gymnasts and the weightlifting why not squeeze in a musical? I mean how many times can you go see Big Ben or Buckingham Palace? Now if Matilda or Billy Elliot is not your thing there are plenty of other things to see. Don't forget that London is home to one of the world's greatest playwrights Mr. William Shakespeare himself. Plus don't forget such long running plays like Woman in Black or The Mousetrap which has been running since 1952. London has it all and then some. So next time you are planning a trip across the pond don't forget that Applause is your one stop shop for all shows in the West End. That's what we do. Until next time theatre fans.

Applause Loves Travel Agents

Now I know people like to throw the whole "L" word around a lot but when it comes to travel agents we here at a Applause Theatre Service really mean it. Heck if it wasn't for you, our loyal travel agents, I wouldn't be typing this blog right now. I'd be out of a job. Well not literally. The truth is we wouldn't be where we are if it wasn't for the travel agent industry. It still amazes me that after all these years that I still hear from the same agents over and over again. In fact there are even a few agents that have been using our service from the very beginning. And that was over 25 years years ago. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. When you provide great service there will always be those customers that come back time and time again. We truly couldn't do it without you.

So from all of us at Applause Theatre Service (Todd,J.,Claudia,Adam,David,Jonathan,Billy and Rich)we thank you,and hope to talk to you all again very soon!

New Play Magic/Bird To Open On Broadway Tonight

Calling all theatre fans. Or should I basketball fans. Now the truth is I have been going to the theatre a lot longer than I have been following basketball. In fact until 1999 I didn't follow basketball at all. That of course was the year that the New York Knicks made it to the finals. Having been a resident of New York for almost a decade I figured it was time to support the home team. From then on I was hooked. Cut to thirteen years later and the Knicks are on the verge of making the playoffs for the second consecutive year. I know. I know. I probably just jinxed them. Anyway back to the reason for today's blog. Tonight will mark the Broadway debut of the new play Magic/Bird.

The show which began previews at the Longacre Theatre on March 21 tells the story of Hall of Famers Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird and their rivalry turned friendship beginning in the late 70's thru the 1992 Olympics. I myself saw the show a few weeks ago and loved it. Do you need to be a basketball fun to enjoy it? It certainly helps but I think overall if you go in with an open mind you will have a good time. Plus at a running time of only ninety minutes it is just as thrilling as a real basketball game and not as long. Plus you don't have to worry about some drunk fan spilling beer all over you.By the way for those of you who want to see this new play now is the best time. Not only that but at prices that can't be beat.Get your tickets to see Magic/Bird on Broadway. You will love it.

Purchasing Tickets On The Web

Recently I purchased a gift for my Mother on Amazon.com. As usual the experience was great. Those people know what the are doing. I guess that's why they are so successful. Now we all know that not every website is as easy to navigate as Amazon. Same with ticket sites. Now the problem is that not everyone who sells tickets is legitimate. The key is to find one that do what they say they do and in turn establishes a relationship that will continue to exist in the foreseeable future. The truth is without repeat business most companies would fail to survive. I know without our loyal customers Applause wouldn't still be here. I always tell people that whether when buying tickets or anything for that matter online it is important to shop around. Do your homework and find the one that works best for you. It's your money after all. Until next time theatre fans.

Customer Story

That's right theatre fans. It's time for our customer story of the week. This week's customer story comes all the way from the great state of Illinois. Chicago to be exact. It's funny but in the eighteen years that I lived in Illinois I only visited Chicago once. Anyway enough about me. This past Thursday I received a call from a travel agent whose client was planning a trip to London next month and wanted to see a couple of shows while there were there. I asked him what they wanted to see and his two choices were The Mousetrap and hopefully a show at the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

I told him that while The Mousetrap was still very popular it shouldn't be a problem as it has been playing in the West End for over fifty years. That made him laugh. After securing some excellent seats in the Stalls (Orchestra) I set out to see what was playing at the Globe the following day. Why it was none other than the Danish prince himself Hamlet. After a little research I was able to get him two seats in the Middle Gallery. Which by the way is the best view in that theatre. Well suffice to say the client was very happy. Not only that but the agent said that he would use us again when his client visits New York in the fall. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?
