A Behanding In Spokane To Open Tomorrow

One of this season's most highly anticipated new shows is A Behanding In Spokane. This new play by acclaimed Irish playwright Martin McDonaugh stars Christopher Walken, Zoe Kazan, Anthony Mackie and Sam Rockwell and began previews on February 15 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. For those of you have never seen one of his plays they are generally very dark yet comedic at points as well. That is why they call it a "dark comedy".

It's also interesting to note that this is the first one of his shows to take place in the United States. What the reviews will be is anyone's guess. I have yet to see one of his plays that did not get good notices or a Tony nomination for Best Play. Will this be the one to break the streak? We will soon find out. Check out the website on Friday when I will post the reviews.

A Behanding In Spokane Begins Previews Tonight

That's right theatre fans. One of this season's most highly anticipated new shows is set to begin previews tonight on Broadway. A Behanding in Spokane, the newest work by playwright Martin McDonagh will officially open on March 4 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The play stars Christopher Walken,Sam Rockwell,Anthony Mackie, and Zoe Kazan, with direction by John Crowley who helmed this season's A Steady Rain.Unlike Mr. McDonagh's previous work this is the first play to be set in the United States. Here is a synopsis of the show from a production source.

"The title is just the starting point; take a man searching for his missing hand (Walken), two con artists out to make a few hundred bucks (Mackie and Kazan), and an overly curious hotel clerk (Rockwell), and the rest is up for grabs."

To be honest I've never seen any of his plays but based on the cast I think I might have to check this one out. Based on the playwright's previous track record I expect the show to be a big contender come Tony time. We will soon find out. Get your tickets to see A Behanding in Spokane On Broadway. It's only here until June 6 so don't wait.

The Season Ahead Part One

Well now that 2009 is behind us it's time to look ahead to the second part of the 2009-2010 Broadway season. As of now there are fifteen shows set to open between now and the end of April. Let's take a look at a few of them.

Present Laughter(Opens January 21)This new revival of one of Noel Coward's most well know plays began previews over the weekend at the American Airline's Theatre and stars four-time Tony nominee Victor Garber. The show was last revived on Broadway back in 1996 with Tony winner Frank Langella. The Roundabout Theatre Company hasn't had a hit in a few years. Will this be the one to get them out of their creative slump? We will soon find out.

A View From The Bridge(Opens January 24)I cannot wait to see this show. In fact my boss and I were just talking about it this morning. He loves Scarlet Johannson. Don't tell his wife. I saw the the 1998 revival and thoroughly enjoyed it. Playing the tortured Eddie Carbone is Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber. He is a wonderful stage actor and I can not wait to see what he brings to this iconic stage role. The show is only scheduled to play thru April 4 so get your tickets to what is sure to be one of the big hits of the season.

Time Stands Still(Opens January 28)This new play by Donald Margulies is being produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club. Like the Roundabout they have unfortunately had more misses than hits the last few years. The good news is they have an outstanding cast featuring Broadway veterans Laura Linney and Brian D'Arcy James. Rounding out the cast are film star Alicia Silverstone and making his Broadway theatrical debut playwright Eric Bogosian. I'll give it a chance.

The Miracle Worker(Opens March 3)Even though I have never seen a production or any of the many movie and television versions of this well known play I am looking forward to it. The main reason being Alison Pill as Annie Sullivan. In the last few years she has proven to be on of the finest stage actor's of her generation. Plus you have rising film star Abigail Breslin in the role of Helen Keller. This new production is being performed at the Circle in the Square which is theatre in the round. I can't wait.

A Behanding In The Spokane(March 4)This new play written by Martin McDonagh is getting a lot of press due mostly to it's all star cast. Academy Award winner Christopher Walken makes his return to Broadway for the first time in almost a decade to star in what is sure to be one of the biggest hits of the season. Rounding out the cast are Sam Rockwell, Anthony Mackie, and Zoe Kazan. I've never see Mr. Walken on stage so I am sure we are in for a treat.

Well there we are so far. Not one musical in the whole bunch. I'll be back later this week to discuss five new shows including the highly anticipated Addams Family. Until next time theatre fans.
