Two-Time Tony Award Winner Tootsie To Close

TootsieI can't remember the last time I was this upset about a show closing. Yes I can. It was 2008, and it was announced that my favorite show of all time, Rent, was closing after a run of twelve years. By the way, not only was it my favorite show of all time, but I saw it over twenty-five times.

Now here we are eleven years later, and another favorite of mine is closing. Tootsie, will play it's final performance at the Marquis Theatre on January 5, 2020. When it closes, it will have played a total of twenty-five previews, and two hundred and ninety-three performances.

Now while I didn't see the show twenty-five times, it is by far one of the funniest Broadway shows that I have seen in years. The truth is,that while the show got some of the best reviews of last season, it just wasn't a hit at the box office.

I mean let's face it. Not every show can be a blockbuster like Hamilton or The Lion King. Then there are shows like Beetlejuice, which I also loved by the way, that didn't get the greatest reviews, but is still selling well. That's just business I guess. Doesn't mean that I have to like it. Until next time theatre fans.

My Pick's For This Year's Tony Awards

That's right theatre fans. We are just eight hours away from the 2019 Tony Awards. Leading the pack with fourteen nominations is Hadestown, followed by Ain't Too Proud with twelve. Now unlike year's past, I have actually seen most of this season's nominated musicals. My favorite? Beetlejuice. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much as I had never seen the movie. I am however a huge fan of The Temptations, who's story is told beautifully in Ain't Too Proud. Not too mention Toostie is in my opinion the greatest comedy of all time. My pick for who will take home the Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year? Tootsie. As for the rest of my pick's for this year's winners well you'll just have to keep reading. Enjoy.

Tootsie Reviews

TootsieA few days ago, I posted a blog commenting on how this was one of the busiest week's on Broadway. This week alone, there are four shows opening, not too mention the Outer Critic's Circle and the Drama Desk nominations. Like I said theatre fans. It's been a busy week.

Last night, one of this season's most highly anticipated new shows opened on Broadway. Tootsie, which is based on the award winning 1982 film, is one of the funniest shows that I have seen in years. But don't take my word for it. What did the critic's have to say? Let's find out.
