Two-Time Tony Award Winner Tootsie To Close

TootsieI can't remember the last time I was this upset about a show closing. Yes I can. It was 2008, and it was announced that my favorite show of all time, Rent, was closing after a run of twelve years. By the way, not only was it my favorite show of all time, but I saw it over twenty-five times.

Now here we are eleven years later, and another favorite of mine is closing. Tootsie, will play it's final performance at the Marquis Theatre on January 5, 2020. When it closes, it will have played a total of twenty-five previews, and two hundred and ninety-three performances.

Now while I didn't see the show twenty-five times, it is by far one of the funniest Broadway shows that I have seen in years. The truth is,that while the show got some of the best reviews of last season, it just wasn't a hit at the box office.

I mean let's face it. Not every show can be a blockbuster like Hamilton or The Lion King. Then there are shows like Beetlejuice, which I also loved by the way, that didn't get the greatest reviews, but is still selling well. That's just business I guess. Doesn't mean that I have to like it. Until next time theatre fans.

Tootsie Reviews

TootsieA few days ago, I posted a blog commenting on how this was one of the busiest week's on Broadway. This week alone, there are four shows opening, not too mention the Outer Critic's Circle and the Drama Desk nominations. Like I said theatre fans. It's been a busy week.

Last night, one of this season's most highly anticipated new shows opened on Broadway. Tootsie, which is based on the award winning 1982 film, is one of the funniest shows that I have seen in years. But don't take my word for it. What did the critic's have to say? Let's find out.

Tootsie Now In Previews

TootsieI can not wait until April 8. Why you ask? Because that my friends, is the day that I am going to see Tootsie on Broadway. Now do you see why I'm so excited? First of all, the movie is a personal favorite of mine. In fact, I think it's probably the greatest movie comedy of all time. But that's just my opinion of course.

And second of all, it has a score by Tony Award winning composer David Yazbeck, who won last year for The Band's Visit. The show, which premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Theatre in Chicago, is scheduled to open at the Marquis Theatre on April 23.

Directed by eight-time Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis (She Loves Me, 1776, You Can't Take It With You), and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Denis Jones (Holiday Inn, Honeymoon In Vegas), Tootsie stars Tony Award nominee Santino Fontana as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels).

Starring along side him are Lily Cooper as Julia Nichols (SpongeBob SquarePants), Sarah Stiles as Sandy Lester, John Behlmann as Max Van Horn, Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff Slater, Julie Halston as Rita Marshall, Tony Award winner Michael McGrath as Stan Fields, and Reg Rogers as Ron Carlisle.

By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see Tootsie, you are in luck. We sell it. In fact, we are selling tickets for every new play and musical this season. Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets to see the show at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru May 30, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability. Get your ticket to see Tootsie on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

TootsieLast month I posted a blog about the upcoming production of Tootsie. Now while the film is one of my favorite of all times, I was a little worried if it could work as a big Broadway musical.

I am happy to report that based on great word of mouth out of Chicago, and today's reviews, I had nothing to worry about. So what did the critic's have to say? Let's find out.

Broadway Bound Production Of Toostie Is Already Creating A Buzz

TootsieLast month I posted a blog about the eagerly anticipated new musical Tootsie. Based on the popular 1982 film, the show is currently in previews at the Cadillac Theatre in Chicago thru October 19. Now as I mentioned in my blog, Tootsie is one of my favorite films of all time. However I will admit that after reading recent articles about the show I was a little scared. After all, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Thankfully word of mouth out of Chicago looks promising, with the recent article by New York Post's resident theatre columnist Michael Riedel. Now I know that there are those out there that are not too fond of Mr. Reidel or his views. You know what? Who cares. Oh sure he may be a little controversial, and his opinion may rub some people the wrong way.

But at the end of the day, the man is there to report the news, which is what he has been doing for over twenty-five years and counting. And besides, isn't it about time that Broadway has a feel good, old fashioned type musical once again? I think so. Here's hoping I am right. Until next time theatre fans.
