Well and less you've been living under a rock you know that this past Sunday was the Tony Awards. Now believe it or not but I did not watch the show. Oh sure I watched a few of the highlights the next day on CBS.com but as far as sitting down on my couch and staring at my television set for three hours that was not going to happen. In fact this was the first time in twenty-four years that I did not watch the show. Boy do I sound old.
The main reason is that for the first time there was not one show that I really liked or liked enough that I needed to see again in a three minute highlight of the show. Now of course the show I enjoyed the most the season was The Addams Family and that was not nominated. Yes I enjoyed American Idiot but watching a bunch of stuffy Broadway people trying to headbang to Green Day music was not my idea of a good time.
As I'm sure you know by now Memphis took the award for Best Musical and of course the next day we received a fury of calls from people looking for tickets to the show. Now while the show received critical acclaim and won several awards it is not a big seller nor do I expect sales to go thru the roof because of a little new found fame. In fact every call that I received regarding the show were from people who wanted to see the show at a discounted rate. Now what does that say about the Tony Awards or the future of the Broadway musical for that matter?I'm done.
