Typically when one thinks of a Broadway show it's something grander than can be imagined. That's exactly what an audience member gets when they see Spongebob Squarepants the Musical.
Possibly one of the biggest underdogs of the 2017-2018 season, Spongebob Squarepants is one of the most creative shows I've seen this year. I'm going to be honest with you - we weren't sure exactly how well received this show would be. After seeing the show now multiple times, I can guarantee this is not only a show for children, adults can have just as much fun.
Based off of the animated show of the same name, Spongebob Squarepants the Musical is a less cartoonized version of the Nickelodeon favorite. The production team has somehow created Bikini Bottom inside of the Palace Theatre and it's definitely a site to behold.
Spongebob Squrepants the Musical follows the story of Spongebob, his two pals Sandy and Patrick, and the rest of the Bikini Bottom population. An ordinary day turns into an ominous one as the town is threatened by the impending eruption of a nearby volcano. Spongebob and his friends set out to save their town and their friends.
Ethan Slater is the hard-working actor who's performance should be notable. Referring back to my Tony nominee prediction blog, I believe Slater will get a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor In A Musical. Though I wish he would win, I believe a more season actor might beat him out. From the moment the show starts, Slater's high-energy performance as this "Simple Sponge" doesn't quit, and leaves nothing to be desired.
The set and costume designer David Zinn is the one who is responsible for making the Palace feel as though you've taken an underwater detour to Bikini Bottom. It's sensory overload- in the best possible way. Imagination was not forsaken in this production.
There are so many other aspects of the show that make it great. A live folly artist creating all the unique sounds in the show; the superb tap dance number by Squidward (Gavin Lee); the voice of Jai'Len Christine Li Josey while she plays Pearl, all just to name a few.
Fans of the popular TV show and newbies alike will have a hard time sitting still during this show. It's smart, it's creative, and it's just downright fun as well. Be sure to see this wonderful show soon, it's bound to be your "Best Day Ever!"
