Disney's The Lion King

The Lion KingNovember 13. 1997? Care to guess what happened on that date? Well if you read the title of my blog, you can probably guess that was the day that The Lion King officially opened on the Great White Way. The show, which not only won the 1998 Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year, is also the highest grossing show in Broadway history.

Pretty good for a show based on an animated film. Now those that know me, know that I'm not exactly the biggest Disney fan in the world. In fact, I've never even seen The Lion King. Not the movie, nor the Broadway show. But I'm not and idiot. Disney has been a force on Broadway ever since the premier of Beauty and the Beast in 1994.

That's twenty-five years for those of you keeping count. Now the truth is, it really doesn't matter what you think. Disney is here to stay my friends. And even though it may not be my cup of tea, I have to applaud them for their originality and the fact that their productions are always at the highest quality. Plus if it wasn't for them, most children might never get the chance to see a Broadway show. For that and that alone, they deserve the highest of the praise. Congratulations to The Lion King for thirteen amazing years on Broadway. Until next time theatre fans.
