American Idiot Wins Grammy For Best Musical Cast Album

Wait a minute. The Grammy's were on last night? How did I miss that? I mean it's not like they've been showing commercials on CBS everyday for the last two week's promoting the show. It's called sarcasm people. Of course I knew it was on last night. Now while I didn't watch the whole show I did see Lady Gaga's perform her new song " Born That Way". In case you didn't see it she was pretty amazing.

Although I will say I liked the song better when Madonna did it twenty years ago and it was called "Express Yourself." Who cares? The song is a hit and will sell millions of copies. Now for you those of you theater buffs who only watch the Grammy's to find out who won the Best Musical Cast Album of the Year you probably already know who it was. That's right. Everyone's favorite rock musical American Idiot. Also in the running last night were Fela!,A Little Night Music,Sondheim on Sondheim, and Promises, Promises.

Oh come on. Did you really think that the Grammy voters were going to pick Stephen Sondheim over Green Day? Get real. The show which opened to rave reviews last Spring is still packing them in at the St. James Theatre eight times a week on Broadway. Of course having Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong in the show certainly has something to do with that I'm sure. Don't forget you only have two more week's to see Billie Joe in the show so don't delay. Call now.

Get Tickets To See American Idiot On Broadway

Still haven't seen one of Broadway's most exciting shows? Well what are you waiting for people? Now is the best time to see American Idiot on Broadway. The show which opened at the St. James Theatre in April 2010 is by far one of the most thrilling nights that I have ever spent in the theatre in a long, long time.

Now prior to seeing it I knew a few of the songs but wasn't really sure how they were going to turn this Grammy Award winning album into a big Broadway musical. Sure the music is incredible. That doesn't mean necessarily equal success. Luckily they had a great director in the form of Michael Mayer who had scored a hit a few seasons prior with Spring Awakening.

Once again I put the cart before the horse. What a brill ant piece of theatre. From the opening moment of the show to the stirring finale I was blown away. Even if you are not a fan of Green Day you will still be moved by what this talented cast of actors is doing on that stage. It should not be missed. Get your tickets to see American Idiot on Broadway.

"It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.

Save On American Idiot This Spring

This is great news for all you Green Day fans. American Idiot the new Broadway musical based on Green Day's Grammy Award winning album is currently in previews at the St.James Theatre in anticipation of an April 20 opening. As I mentioned in last weeks blog I was fortunate to be able to attend their final sound check prior to that evenings first preview.

While I am a fan of the album I am anxious to see how the show will make the transfer to the Broadway stage. Now granted I only saw the opening number but if the put that much energy into the whole show then it is going to be amazing. For those of you like me who are dying to see the show then I have some fantastic news.

From now thru May 16 you can get tickets to see one of this season's most highly anticipated new shows for prices that are below face value. Be advised that in order to be eligible for this special offer you must order by April 20 and that it is not valid for Saturday evening performances. Get your tickets to see American Idiot at the St. James Theatre on Broadway. Expect it to be a big contender at this years Tony Awards.

American Idiot To Beging Performances Tonight

Calling all Green Day fans. Now sure you don't have to be a fan of the band to enjoy the show but it sure helps. My guess is that most of the audience buying tickets to see American Idiot is for that reason alone. Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the final sound check for the show prior to it's first public performance tonight at the St. James Theatre on Broadway.

The entire presentation consisted of the casts performance of the title song "American Idiot" which opens the show and the appearance of it's director Michael Mayer and the members of Green Day who discussed the show. Now from what I saw this is going to be a show with a lot of energy and sex appeal. To me it reminded me more of Spring Awakening as opposed to Rent.

Now while I enjoy Green Day's music I'm not sure if there enough fans out there that will buy tickets to see this Grammy Award winning album sung by a bunch of Broadway performers. I for one hope it succeeds. We shall see. Opening night is set for April 20. Until next time theatre fans.

American Idiot Now On Sale

Now I don't know about the rest of you but I am really looking forward to this show. American Idiot, which is based on the Grammy Award winning album by Green Day is set to begin previews at Broadway's St. James Theatre on March 24 with opening night set for April 20. The show first premiered last fall at the Berkeley Repertory Theater where it received critical acclaim prompting the show to move to Broadway this season in time for Tony consideration.

Now while the show is sure to have a very large fan base due to the world wide popularity of Green Day I'm not sure how the rest of the theater going public will receive the show. Rent was and is my favorite show of all time. When it first opened I don't think anyone expected it to be as popular or as mainstream as it did. The last rock musical to open on Broadway was Spring Awaking which enjoyed a two year run on Broadway and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Coincidentally that show was also directed by Michael Mayer who won a Tony for his work. Will lighting strike twice? I hope so. Personally I am rooting for the show and if successful I hope it will encourage more musicians like Greene Day to try their luck on the Great White Way. Until next time theatre fans.

Tickets For American Idiot To Go On Sale This Sunday

That's right Green Day fans. In less then four days tickets will go on sale for one of this season's most highly anticipated shows. I am of course talking about American Idiot. The show which is set to begin previews at the St. James Theatre on March 24 is based on the Grammy Award winning album of the same name. The show which received rave reviews at the Berkeley Rep Theatre last fall is set to officially open on April 20. Last week I posted a blog on how the show did a million dollars in ticket sales following the casts performance with Green Day at the Grammy's.

I expect ticket sales to go thru the roof as the first preview gets closer. I for one can't wait to see the show. In fact I am going to go out on a limb here and say that American Idiot will win the Tony Award for Best Musical. Anyone out there care to dispute my theory? You know where to reach me. Until next time theatre fans.

Grammy Awards Gives American Idiot A Boost At The Box Office

It was reported today that American Idiot, the new musical featuring the music of Green Day took in over a million dollars in tickets sales the day after the cast performed at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday. According to Michael Reidel of the New York Post Green Day frontman Billy Joe Armstrong insisted that the cast perform with them during the telecast. Looks like it was a good idea as the show sold more tickets in a single day then most shows sell in a week. Buzz about the show is already at a fever pitch and their performance at the Grammy's only made it stronger. Now I'm not a betting man but I think it will come down to The Addams Family and American Idiot vying it out for this year's Tony Award for Best Musical. Let the games begin. Until next time theatre fans.

American Idiot Cast Announced

Final casting was announced yesterday for the highly anticipated new musical American Idiot. Leading the cast are Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony nominee Stark Sands and Michael Esper. The show which is based on Green Day's American Idiot is set to begin previews at the St. James Theatre on March 24 with an official opening set for April 20. The show is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer who co-wrote the book with Green Day lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong.

Speculation on whether the show would open this season was enhanced by it's critical run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California last fall. The show which runs a mere 95 minutes is being hailed as one of the highlights of the 2009-2010 Broadway season. Here is a brief description of the show according to a production source.

"American Idiot follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post 9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. This high-octane show includes every song from the acclaimed album 'American Idiot,' as well as
several songs from the band's three-time Grammy- nominated new release,"21st Century Breakdown."

I myself am looking forward to seeing the show. The album is a personal favorite of mine and I really hope it does well. By the way tickets are set to go on sale on February 14. Get your tickets to see American Idiot on Broadway. Expect it to be a big Tony contender this Spring.

American Idiot To Open On Broadway This Spring

Never in a million years did I ever think I would hear Green Day music on Broadway. Yet here we are at the start of a new decade and American Idiot, a musical based on the Grammy Award winning album is set to begin previews on Broadway on March 24 at the St. James Theatre. The show which played in September at Berkeley Rep was a critical and financial success extending twice before playing it's final performance on November 15, 2009. Here is a brief description of the show.

"American Idiot follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration — an exhilarating journey borne along by Green Day's electrifying songs. This high-octane show includes every song from the album, as well as several new songs from '21st Century Breakdown.'"

The show is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer(Spring Awakening)with choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett.Being a composer myself and working on my own rock musical I am so excited to see how this show will do. This years Tony race just got very interesting. Until next time theatre fans.
