Off-Broadway Theatre

StompBlue Man GroupRock of AgesLet's be honest. When most people think of theatre in New York, their first thought is usually Broadway. Makes sense right? After all, it has been around since the early 1900's, with the original theatre scene beginning in New York as far back as 1750. The oldest theatre is the New Amsterdam, followed by the Lyceum and the Hudson. All three were completed in 1903.

That's a hundred and seventeen years for you mathematician's out there. Now of course, Off-Broadway has not been around that long. It actually started back in the 1950's as a response to the growing commercialism in the theatre, as well as the need to build more less expensive venues, that in turn would employ more artists. Sounds like a win win to me.

Now as much as I love Broadway, I'll admit that some of the most innovative and groundbreaking shows that I have ever seen got their start Off-Broadway. Maybe you've heard of some of them? A Chorus Line. Avenue Q, In The Heights. Spring Awakening. Fun Home. Dear Evan Hansen. Hamilton. And my personal favorite. Rent. Any of those ring a bell?

Now besides all of them getting their start Off-Broadway, they also have another thing in common. Give up? They all won the Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year. Then of course there are shows like Rock of Ages, Jersey Boys, and The Play That Goes Wrong, all of which had long runs on Broadway, then reopen later on at a smaller theatre Off-Broadway.

Rock of Ages by the way got it's start at New World Stages, where it recently returned last year.Other long running Off-Broadway shows that you might want to check out are Blue Man Group, Stomp, and Sleep No More. That's what's so great about Off-Broadway. There truly is something for everyone. Oh and did I mention that we sell tickets to each and every one of those shows that I mentioned? Well we do. Until next time Off-Broadway fans.

Off-Broadway Production Of Little Shop Horrors Extends

Oh come on now. You knew it was going to happen. I mean how could it not, with reviews like these. Little Shop of Horrors, which opened Off-Broadway at the Westside Arts Theatre on October 17, is now on sale thru March 8, 2020.

The show, which features music by Alan Menken, and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, stars Tony Award nominee's Jonathan Groff and Tammy Blanchard, and two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle.

It was also announced that Groff will be exiting the show on January 19, and will be replaced by fellow Tony Award nominee Gideon Glick, who previously played the role for a two week engagement earlier this month.Tickets for the show have been selling like gangbusters since the show was first announced, and I expect this new batch of tickets to fly out the door too. Oh and did I mention that we are selling it? Well we are. Get your tickets to see Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway at the Westside Arts Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Off-Broadway Revival Of Little Shop Of Horrors Now In Previews

One of my favorite movies growing up was Little Shop of Horrors starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, and Bill Murray. The movie, which was based on the long running Off-Broadway production, premiered on the big screen in 1986. Now while it grossed less at the box office than expected, it soon turned into a hit following it's release on VHS and Beta.

Yes that's right kids. I said Beta. Now here we are thirty-three years later, and this beloved musical is headed back to the Off-Broadway stage. Only this time instead of playing at an the intimate Orpheum Theatre in the East Village, it has moved uptown just steps from Time Square at the Westside Arts Theatre.

Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), and featuring music by Tony and Academy Award winner, and book and lyrics by Academy Award winner Howard Ashman, Little Shop of Horrors stars Tony Award nominee's Jonathan Groff and Tammy Blanchard as co-workers Seymour and Audrey, and two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle as Orin.

Tickets for the limited production have been flying out the door ever since they went on sale. Now that doesn't mean you can't get tickets. It just means you have to spend a little more to get them. Get your tickets to see Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway at the Westside Arts Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Rock Of Ages Now On Sale Thru January 2020

Rock of AgesI can't tell you how excited I am by this news theater fans. Although truth be told, I actually predicted this months ago when the show was first announced. Rock of Ages, which was scheduled to ran thru October 6 at New World Stages, is now on sale thru January 12, 2020.

Now I know what you are thinking. How could I be so sure that the show would extend? Well first of all, most shows that announce a limited engagement, usually end up extending anyway. Unless of course it's a show with a major star, in which case it runs anywhere from twelve to sixteen weeks.

The second reason is because the show had a huge fan base when it first opened in the same venue eleven years ago. That production if I recall was also a limited run, and ended up transferring to Broadway where it was nominated for five 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year, and played for a total of 22 previews and 2,328 performances. And third, I love the show, and if I'm being honest I want the show to last for a long, long time.

By the way, for those of you who want to see the show, you are in luck. We sell it. Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets to see Rock of Ages at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru October 6, it is for select seats only, and as always, subject to availability. Get your tickets to see Rock of Ages Off-Broadway at New World Stages. Until next time theatre fans.
