Broadway's Wicked Celebrates Anniversary

WickedHas it really been fourteen years since Wicked took the Great White Way by storm? Well it has. On October 30, 2003 Wicked opened at the at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway. Since that time, it has played to packed houses eight times a week not only in New York, but at theatres around the world. Now while I loved the show when I first saw it,  I never expected the show would become as popular as it has.

I don't think anybody did. After all, the show got mixed reviews when it first opened. But what do the critics know right? Now for those of you haven't seen the show, you are in luck. We sell it. In fact we sell tickets for the London production, as well as tickets for it's National tour. Who knew? Get your tickets to see Wicked on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre, or at a city near you. Until next time theatre fans.

Where To Eat In NYC

Image result for restaurant row nyc logoNow we all know that New York City has some of the finest restaurants in the world. In the theatre district alone, there are literally hundreds and hundreds of ones to choose from.

In fact on 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, there are over twenty-five. I guess that's why they call it Restaurant Row huh? Now I don't know about you, but I just love a good steak. Although I have been known to eat Mexican and Italian.

I even like sushi. Well once in a while. But that's what is so great about New York City. There truly is something for everyone. The only thing you have to ask yourself is which one do you choose? Well thanks to the experts at Applause Theatre and Entertainment Service, we can do the work for you.

Not only have we been to many of these restaurants, but we know which ones to avoid as well. Let's face it. There is nothing worse than going to a restaurant that looks good and turns out to be a nightmare. Trust me my friends. We have all been there. Plus not only do we know the best places to eat, but also ones that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Until next time food fans.

Jersey Boys To Return To New York Next Month

Image result for jersey boys logoExciting news theatre fans. One of Broadway's most celebrated shows is headed back to the Big Apple. Only this time it's headed Off-Broadway. Jersey Boys, which won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year, is set to begin previews at New World Stages on November 22, with opening night to be announced.

Now when the show was first announced back in 2005, I admit I was a little intrigued. After all I did love the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Although to be honest they were a little ahead of my time. Cut to six months later, and the show opens to rave reviews, and goes on to win award after award.

Now as much as I loved their music, I have never been too big on shows with a lot of hype. It's probably the reason why it took me so long to see Billy Elliot or Hamilton. Three years later I finally saw the show. So I know what you must be thinking. Did I like it? No I didn't. I loved it.

I can't believe I waited so long to see it. That will teach me I guess. Now as much as I loved the show, I assumed that after it closed earlier this year, it would be a very long time before we would see this show again in New York City. I was wrong. Trust me. It won't be the last time. Tickets for the show are now on sale. Not only that, but we are selling it. Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys at New World Stages. Until next time theatre fans.

Exciting news theatre fans. One of my favorite actor's and yours, is headed back to Broadway. John Lithgow, a two-time Tony and Emmy Award winner, will star in John Lithgow: Stories By Heart.

The show, which previously played throughout the United Sates and London, will begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on December 21, with opening night scheduled for January 11.

John Lithgow: Stories By Heart, which the New York Times called, "a tour de force" is directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan. So what is the show all about? Well according to a production source, "Stories By Heart, evokes memories of family, explores and expands the limits of the actor's craft, and masterfully conjures a cast of indelible characters from classic short stories by Ring Lardner and P.G. Wodehouse."

Sounds like a great evening in the theatre to me. Tickets for the one man show are now on sale. Not only that, but we are selling them. Get your tickets to see John Lithgow: Stories By Heart on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Mean Girls On Broadway

Mean GirlsWhat's that you say? A hit movie turned into a big splashy Broadway musical? That almost never happens. I'm kidding of course. After all, there have been twenty-nine shows since 1995 that have been nominated for Best Musical that were based on successful movies.

Nine of which took home the top prize. Now it's Mean Girls turn. The show, which is based on the 2004 hit film, will begin previews at the August Wilson Theatre on March 12, 2018, with opening night scheduled for April 8. Oh but wait. It get's better.

Writing the book for the new musical, is the film's original screenwriter Emmy winner Tina Fey, with music by fellow Emmy winner Jeff Richmond (30 Rock), and lyrics by Tony nominee Nell Benjamin (Legally Blond). Direction and choreography is by Tony winner Casey Nicholaw.

Prior to it's Broadway production, the show will play at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. from October 31-December 3. Tickets for both productions are now on sale. All Star Cast To Headline Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero On Broadway

One of my favorite movies of the past year was Manchester By The Sea. I know. I know. What does that have to do with today's blog? Well it's because the film's director and screenwriter, who by the way won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay this year, is also the author of Lobby Hero.

The show, which first premiered Off-Broadway in March 2001, is set to begin previews at the soon-to-be newly renovated Helen Hayes Theatre on March 1, 2018, with opening night scheduled for March 26. Leading the cast are three of Hollywood's hottest young stars. Making his Broadway debut along side Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Superbad), who himself made his Broadway debut three years ago, is Chris Evans (Captain America, Fantastic Four).

Joining them in the celebrated drama is Brian Tyree Henry (The Book of Mormon), who received an Emmy nomination this year for NBC'S breakout hit This Is Us. Set in a Manhattan apartment building during the wee hours of the evening, Lobby Hero follows a security guard in his late twenties, his strict supervisor, and an overbearing cop and his rookie female partner.

Now I know what you're thinking. Who is the lucky young lady who get's to act along side this trio of talented actor's? You're guess is good as mine. Stay tuned to this site for further updates. New Play The Parisian Woman Starring Uma Thurman To Open On Broadway This Fall

Image result for the parisian woman logoUma Thurman on Broadway in a brand new play? Well I'm sold. The Parisian Woman, which is written by Broadway newcomer Beau Willimon (House of Cards), is set to begin previews at the Hudson Theatre on November 7, with opening night scheduled for November 30.

So what is the show all about? Well according to a show spokesperson, The Parisian Woman is based on Henry Becque’s late 19th century comedy La Parisienne. However the major difference with this new production is that it takes place in present day Washington D.C.

I can just see the fireworks now can't you? Plus it was recently announced that the play will change week to week in order to reflect on the current political climate. Sounds like an episode of Saturday Night Live. Let's hope the actor's are up for it. Starring along side Academy Award nominee Uma Thurman is Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, Hulk), Tony winner Blair Brown (Copenhagen, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd), Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, Amelia), and Marton Csokas (Loving, Into The Badlands).

The show, which is being directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, A Delicate Balance), is set to begin previews at the Hudson Theatre on November 7, with opening night scheduled for November 30. Tony and Oscar Winner Mark Rylance To Return To Broadway In Farinelli and the King

Image result for farinelli and the king logoOne of this season’s most highly anticipated shows is Farinelli and the King. The show, which stars three-time Tony Award winner and 2016 Academy Award winner Mark Rylance, is set to begin previews at the Belasco Theatre on December 5, with opening night scheduled for December 17.

The show, which first opened at the Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015 prior to it’s sold out run in the West End, is written by Claire van Kampen, AKA Mrs. Mark Rylance, and directed by John Dove.

So what exactly is the show about? Well I’ll tell you. Farinelli and the King, tells the story of King Philippe V of Spain (Mark Rylance), who suffers from insomnia, leaving him bedridden. The queen, whose prior attempts at a solution have failed, discovers Farinelli, a castrato who's angelic voice mesmerizes all who come in contact with it.  However there is only one problem. Will Farinelli, the world renowned singer, give up fortune and fame to remain at the beck and call for Spain’s reigning monarch? I guess you will have to buy a ticket to find out. Tickets for the critically acclaimed new play have been selling like crazy when it was first announced back in May. Get your tickets to see Farinelli and the King on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre. Broadway Revival Of A Children Of A Lesser God To Open On Broadway in 2018

Image result for children of a lesser god broadway logoI can’t tell you how excited I am to see this show. One of my favorite movies from the 1980’s was Children Of A Lesser God. The film, which was released in 1986, starred Academy Award winner William Hurt, and Marlee Matlin who won the Oscar for Best Actress in her film debut.

Not only that, but the original production which premiered in 1980, won the Tony Award for Best Play. Plus, both of its stars John Rubinstein, and Phyllis Frelich took home Tony’s for their performances as well.

Sounds like this show has some pretty big shoes to fill don’t you think? Thankfully this new production, which stars television and film star Joshua Jackson (The Affair, Dawson’s Creek), and Broadway newcomer Lauren Ridloff, received rave reviews when it opened at the Berkshire Theatre Festival this June.

Previews for the new revival, which is being directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin In The Sun), will begin at Studio 54 on March 22, 2018, with opening night scheduled for April 11. As of now tickets for the show are not on sale. Check back here for future updates. Get your tickets to see Children Of A Lesser God on Broadway at Studio 54. Who knows? You just might see me there. Until next time theatre fans.

Junk To Premier This Fall On Broadway

Junk
Some title huh? I wonder what it could be about? No it’s not set in an old depleted junk yard. Junk, which is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar (Disgraced), takes place during the dog eat dog financial world of the 1980’s. The show, which has been described as a mix between a Shakespearean play and recent Academy Award winning film The Big Short, focuses on America and it’s obsession with money and greed.

Sounds like my kind of show. Previews for the show are set to begin at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on Broadway on October 5, with opening night scheduled for November 2. Directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt), Junk stars Broadway favorite Steven Pasquale (The Bridges of Madison County), as financial wizard Robert Merkin.
