Today In Theatre History

April 29, 1996. Care to guess what happened on that date? Well if you are like me then you know that one of the greatest musicals of the last twenty years opened on Broadway. Dare I say one of the greatest musicals in the last hundred years. Now that's what I think but I may be a little partial as it is one of my favorite shows of all time. So have you figured out which masterpiece I am talking about? Well I'll give you a clue. The show just has one word in it's title. Still can't figure it out? Well it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and won the Tony Award for Best Musical of the year. Not only that but it was a rock musical. Ding. Ding. Ding. That's right theatre fans. It was Rent. Which by the way I say twenty-five times. Now you may think that is a lot but you would be wrong. I have heard stories of people who saw it hundreds and hundreds of times. Now I'm sure I probably would have seen it more but I figured paying the rent was important. Like I how I threw that in there Rent fans? The show which ran on Broadway for over thirteen years is still being performed in theatres all around the world and will hopefully continue for years to come. Thank you Jonathan Larson. Your memory lives on.
