Mamma Mia, which first premiered in the West End prior to making it's Broadway debut in October 2001, will play it's final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 13.
When it closes it will have played a total of 5,773 performances, and will be the eighth longest running show in Broadway history. Now when the show was first announced, I'm sure most people, myself included, weren't expecting it to be a hit. Then 9/11 happened, and as it turns out Mamma Mia was just what we needed.
We as a nation, and more importantly we as a city, were looking for an escape. We were looking for a reason to smile again. Mamma Mia provided that for all of us, and for that we are eternally grateful. Thanks for the memories, and thanks for reminding us that theatre can change our lives. If only for a little while. Until next time theatre fans.
