Tony Winner Jennifer Holiday To Return To Broadway Tonight In The Color Purple

The Color PurpleAnd just when I thought the new revival of The Color Purple couldn't get any better. That's right theatre fans. Jennifer Holliday is coming back home. The award winning actress, who won a Tony Award in 1981 for her explosive performance as Effie White in Dreamgirls, is taking over the role of Shug Avery in the Tony Award winning revival of The Color Purple.

She replaces fellow Tony winner Heather Headley, who played her final performance on October 2. Holliday, who last performed in Chicago as Matron "Mama" Morton in 2001, made her Broadway debut in 1980 at the age of 19 in the gospel musical Your Arms To Short To Box With God. By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see The Color Purple you are in luck.
