This past Sunday I had the pleasure of seeing Avenue Q. Now mind you it is not the first time that I have seen this amazing show. It was actually my sixth. Although truth be told the last time I saw the show was over twelve years ago. Which incidentally was the night after the show won the Tony Award for Best Musical. What's that? You forgot that Avenue Q beat Wicked for Broadway's biggest prize?
I know. I know. Some of you are still in denial. It's o.k. Luckily both are still playing. Now going into the show I wasn't sure what to expect. Would the show still be as good as it was when I saw it all those years ago? Well I can answer that in one word. No. It was better. Maybe it has something to do with the recent election, or the state of our country right now. Or maybe it has to do with me being at a crossroads in my life right now.
To be honest I have been struggling the last few weeks about the direction my life has been going in. Do I stay in the place I have called home for over two decades? Or do I leave the place that I love to pursue something else? Seeing Avenue Q on Sunday night showed me that everything is not always black and white. Yes it is easy to get defeated and a little scared about what is going on in our world right now. It's only normal. Sometimes you need to see a show like Avenue Q to show you that it's o.k. to laugh, and to help you forget your problems. At least for a little while that is. After all isn't that what theatre is supposed to do? I think Sunday night was exactly what I needed. Who knows? Maybe seeing Avenue Q will do the same for you. Happy Holidays everyone, and be safe out there.
