The film, which won four 1977 Academy Awards, was written by Paddy Chayefsky, and was directed by Sidney Lumet. The stage version, which is being written by Tony winner Lee Hall (Billy Elliott), is being directed by fellow Tony winner Ivan van Hove ( A View From The Bridge, The Crucible .

But wait theatre fans. It get's better. Starring in the leading role of Howard Beale is Tony and Emmy winner Bryan Cranston. The show is scheduled to open at the National Theatre in London this November. Stay tuned to this blog site for more info in the coming months. Until next time theatre fans.

Broadway Production Of Waitress Recoups

WaitressI guess there are more pie fans out there than we thought. Just kidding. Waitress, which opened on Broadway last April, recouped it's entire twelve million dollars less than ten months after it opened. Now I loved the movie. However I will admit that when they announced they were turning the show into a musical I was a little skeptical.

Then I found out that six-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles was writing the score. Suffice to say my fears began to subside. Now I know what you're thinking. Did I like the show when I finally saw it? No. I loved it. Is it as good as the movie? All I'll say is that I love them both. By the way for those of you who want tickets to see Waitress you are in luck. We sell them.

Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets to see this Tony nominated musical at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer: is good thru March 16, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see Waitress on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. You will love it. Until next time theatre fans.

After a soldout run at the Public Theatre downtown, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's new play is ready to bring about great excitement to this years Best Play category at this years Tony Awards in June.

Sweat tells us about a lifelong group of friends that over the years have shared laughs, drinks and many secrets as they work together on the factory line together.  The audience will get to witness a time when job layoffs, protests and the formation of picket lines start to erode the basic trust amongst the group.  Friends are finding themselves now going against one another to in order to survive.

Charled Isherwood of The New York Times called Sweat "scorching, superb.  A vital contribution to contemporary drama.  Keenly observed and suprisingly funny, this compassionate, clear-eyed play throbs with heartfelt life."    The critics from Time Out New York, The Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker had glowing things to say about Sweat as well.

Many shows that start out at New York's Public Theater often become popular hits when transfering to the larger Broadway Theater venues.  I'm personally looking forward to catching a preview performance of Sweat and hope you'll consider doing so as well.

Right now, my company Applause-Tickets is offering discount pricing for Sweat at Studio 54 through April 30, 2017.  Once the show officially opens to positive reviews, it is likely these discounts will go away.  If you need assistance with obtaining Sweat tickets at Studio 54, please consider a call to Applause-Tickets at 212-307-7050.  We are open 24/7 to help.

New Musical Based On The Devil Wears Prada In the Works

Image result for the devil wears picsLet me just start off by saying that I have never seen The Devil Wears Prada. I take that back. I have seen bits and pieces of the film over the years. Plus I'll admit that the parts I saw were very funny. How could they not be with a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci right?

Now comes news that the 2006 beloved film, is headed to the stage. Not only that, but it is being written by Grammy and Tony winner Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), and acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Paul Rudnick (Jeffrey, In & Out). As of now no future info has been announced. Stay tuned to this blog for further updates. Until next time theatre fans.

Sit Back and Let Cirque du Soleil's 'Paramour' Lift You Up!

Review of 'Paramour' by Ed Katz 1-19-17

Cirque du Soleil has already conquered Las Vegas with a handful of successful, long-running shows there. They are known worldwide for their hallmark: spectacular, acrobatic aerial stunts, big glitzy sets and costumes as well as inventive dance numbers. They have been dazzling audiences for decades.

New York, however, is different. The team behind Cirque du Soleil shows are the Shakespeares of acrobatics but their simple, tired storylines could have been written by a middle-schooler. 'Paramour' is the show they wanted to use to change that perception and take New York by storm.
It features everything from
identical twins' astounding acrobatic aerial feats (by Andrew and Kevin Atherton, pictured) to a man and woman who perform a beautiful aerial ballet to leaping flights of fancy off a giant seesaw to a man who juggles an umbrella with several large rings to hoop dancers to an amazing rooftop trampoline chase scene (with costumes straight out of 'Guys and Dolls'). Each is a joy to behold.

 photo: Broadway.com

And, if all this isn't enough, there is also a scene with a high tech yo-yo and one with flying lampshades (I'm not kidding). It's all really fun. A heckuva lot of fun.

So much was so impressive- except, alas, the story. That continues to be Cirque du Soleil's Achilles heel. I have seen three other Cirque shows (all in Las Vegas, where this kind of "style over substance" is more accepted) but the Cirque executives have made it clear they want 'Paramour' to be more like a Broadway musical, with the thinking being if they want to be on Broadway they need a "Broadway" show.

Set in the mid-1950's, 'Paramour's' clichéd storyline is about a Hollywood director named AJ, played by Jeremy Kushner (who also serves as narrator but comes across more like a circus ringmaster- which is, of course, fitting), in search of a star who he (surprise!) instantly finds in a speakeasy nightclub. She's played capably by Ruby Lewis, who also possesses a powerful voice. AJ, of course, immediately changes her name from Vera to Indigo. We then follow him making her into a star and the ensuing predictable love triangle between him, Indigo and Indigo's friend the songwriter, Joey (Ryan Vona). But these three are not the real stars of the show.
 photo: Theatermania.com

Those would be the aerialists, acrobats, set designers, choreographers and the musicians. The music manages to match the amazing acrobatics beautifully with a majesty and power that enhance the effect of the performers' theatrics and fit the mood of each scene.

I was told by a production staffer that the 9-piece orchestra (which sounds like twice that size) is comprised of all Broadway pit veterans except the music director, Seth Stachowski, who is a Cirque veteran and plays several instruments during each performance.

You won't leave the theater humming any of the songs (the trite lyrics are also not a Cirque strong suit) but, with the incredible surround-sound at the Lyric Theatre, the music enhances the experience of the stunts.

I can't say the same for the character of the mute Cooper (Nate Cooper), in a Harpo Marx-type role which just offered needless doses of low-brow pratfall humor, often on roller skates... for some reason.

The video projections were a curious combination of high and low definition, perhaps to give you a feeling of Old Hollywood.

So is this a "Broadway" show?
Well, it is playing in a Broadway house so, technically, it is considered a Broadway show. But does that really matter?
For years people have been saying Broadway needs to expand the types of shows it offers and perhaps this is one example of how that can be done. While it's not completely successful, it is fascinating and a lot of fun to watch.

A few words about the Lyric Theatre: Walking into it reminded me of a casino. And I mean that in a good way. The attention to service, a remarkably wide selection of concessions goodies and optional levels of VIP service (called The Ambassador Experience) all add to a Las Vegas-style atmosphere that is a refreshing change from the stodgy old ways of most Broadway houses. And the state-of-the-art surround sound system was spectacular as well-  another notable difference from other Broadway shows (with the exception of 'The Encounter').

To sum up the debate about whether this is a Broadway musical or just a circus show: You don't believe the story for a minute but there is so much spectacle that the thin plot doesn't bother you. At least that would be the suggested approach to take here- just relax and be amazed by all the talented performers doing their aerial stunts. They won't let you down.

What To See In 2017: Part Four

A few days ago, I posted my thoughts on several of the new Broadway shows that are set to open in the next few months. Here is Part Four in my ongoing series. Now unlike my previous posts which featured a mix of plays and musicals, this one is focused on three of the new plays, plus one that is returning to Broadway for the first time since it's original production. Enjoy.

A Doll’s House, Part 2A Doll's House Part 2
First Preview: April 1
Opens: April 27

What's that you say? A sequel to one of the theatre's greatest plays? It can't be true right? After all A Doll's House premiered back in December 1879. That's over a hundred and thirty-seven years for you mathematicians out there. A Dolls' House Part 2, which is a continuation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll House, is written by Lucan Hnath, and stars Emmy winner and Tony nominee Laurie Metcalf, and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper. The show, which is being directed by Tony winner Sam Gold (Fun Home, The Glass Menagerie), also stars Tony winner Jayne Houdyshell (The Humans), and two-time Tony nominee Condola Rashad (Ruined, Stick Fly). Quite the cast don't you think?

The Play That Goes WrongThe Play That Goes Wrong
First Preview: March 9
Opens: April 2

A new play from across the pond? Oh and it's a comedy too. Winner of the 2015 Oliver Award for Best Comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong, is described as Fawlty Towers meets Noises Off. Now that sounds like my kind of comedy. Not only that, but the original company of the London production are reprising their roles for Broadway. It just keeps getting better and better theatre fans.

Indecent
First Preview: April 4
Opens: April 18

IndecentHard to believe that it's taken forty years for Paula Vogel to make her Broadway debut. Well thankfully we won't have to wait much longer theatre fans. Indecent, which is inspired by the play God of Vengeance by Sholem Asch’s, is described as a play with music. The show, which premiered back in 1923, featured the first ever same sex kiss between two young girls. Not surprisingly, this caused quite a bit of controversy, as well as jeopardizing the careers of the shows author, and it's actor's.

Six Degrees Of Separation
First Preview: April 5
Opens: April 25

Six Degrees of SeparationNow of all the shows set to open this season, this is the one that I am the most excited about. How could I not? Not only is it one of my favorite plays. but it is starring Emmy winner Allison Janney, and Tony winner John Benjamin Hickey as New York socialites Ouisa and Fran Kittredge. The show, which is scheduled to run thru July 16, is one show you don't want to miss this season.

So there you have it theatre fans. Quite the season don't you think? Which ones will fail, and which ones will succeed? We will soon find out. Until next time theatre fans.

Aladdin's Tony Winning Genie To Join Broadway's Hamilton

HamiltonExciting news theatre fans. And here I thought Wayne Brady starring in Hamilton was big news. It was just announced, that Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart, is joining the Broadway production of Hamilton, in the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.

Mr. Iglehart, who won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the Genie in Aladdin, is scheduled to begin performances on February 21. His final performance as the Genie is scheduled for February 19. Sounds like somebody will be doing double duty for a while.

Now I know what you're thinking. Can he rap? Well believe it or not, but the award winning actor is actually a member of Freestyle Love Supreme, which is case you didn't know, was founded by fellow Tony winner, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. I'm thinking he'll be just fine. Until next time theatre fans.

What To See In 2017: Part Three

Last week I posted my thoughts on several of the new Broadway shows that are set to open in the next few months. Here is Part Three in this ongoing series. Enjoy!

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryGroundhog Day
First Preview: March 16
Opens: April 17

Let me just start off by saying that I love the movie. Therefore I admit that I was a little skeptical when it was announced that they were turning one of my favorite movies into a big Broadway musical. However when I heard that the creative team behind Matilda was behind it, I knew that I had nothing to worry about. The show, which opened to rave reviews from the critic's in London last Summer, will star Tony nominee Andy Karl (Rocky On The Twentieth Century) in the lead role of Phil Connors. Here's hoping lighting strikes twice.

Anastasia
First Preview: March 23
Opens: April 24

Now I'll be honest. I have never seen Anastasia. The truth is animated films aren't really my thing. It's mostly why I have avoided seeing shows like The Lion King and Aladdin all these years. Don't get me wrong. They certainly have their place. After all if it wasn't for Disney, most kids would never get the chance to experience their first Broadway musical. For that alone they should be commended. Saying that however, I am a fan of the show's writers, Tony winners Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, and Terrence McNally. That alone makes me a little intrigued. Plus the fact that it is based on a true story makes me think I just might have to check it out. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.

Groundhog Day
Oslo
First Preview: March 23
Opens: April 13

Well would you look at that. Another original play On Broadway set to open this season. That's number three so far for those of you keeping count. Oslo, which is based on the real life 1993 negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, first premiered at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre last Summer, where it played to sold out audiences eight times a week. Now you see why it's moving to Broadway? Although to be honest, it won't have to move very far, as it's new theater is right upstairs. Plus with an extra nine hundred and one seats. Here's hoping the show does just as well.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
First Preview: March 28
Opens

Wait a minute. One of my favorite books is coming to the Broadway stage? I must be dreaming right? Now I know what you're thinking. Wasn't there also a very successful movie as well too? Yes there was. However this new version is based more on the Roald Dahl novel, as opposed to the beloved 1971 film. Don't get me wrong. I love the movie. It's just that I love the book just a little more. The show, which is being directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O'Brian (Hairspray, The Coast of Utopia) features a score by Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash), and stars two-time Tony winner Christian Borle (Something Rotten, Falsettos) as Willy Wonka.

The Little Foxes
First Preview: March 29
Opens:

Now wait just a minute. Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon on stage at the same time? Oh and did I mention that both actresses will be alternate in the leading roles of Regina and Birdie Hubbard? Now if that doesn't make you want to see the show then I don't know what will. The show, which is being directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan, is scheduled to play a limited run thru
June 18. Although if reviews are good I wouldn't be surprised if it extends a least a couple of weeks.

BandstandBandstand
First Preview: March 31
Opens: April 26

What's that? A new musical that's not based on a movie or a book? Count me in theatre fans. Bandstand, which takes place during the "Band Era" of World War II, stars Tony nominee Laura Osnes (Bonnie and Clyde, Cinderella) and Corey Cott ( Newsies, Gigi). Not only that, but the show is being directed by two-time Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, In The Heights). I smell a hit.

What To See In 2017: Part Two

Hello Dolly! TicketsA few days ago I posted my thoughts on several of the new Broadway shows that are set to open in the next few months. Here is Part Two in this ongoing series. Enjoy theatre fans.

Miss Saigon
First Preview: March 1
Opens: March 23

Growing up in the Midwest, I was not exposed to a lot of theatre except for the shows I performed in during my junior high and high school years, as well as at my local community theatre. So when a show like Miss Saigon come along I was thrilled. Now here we are over twenty-six years later and the show is ready to take Broadway by storm once again. The show, which is based on the recent highly acclaimed London production, is set to begin previews at it's former home, the Broadway Theatre on March 1. I can't wait.

Sunset Boulevard
First Preview: February 2
Sunset BoulevardOpens: February 9

Now I'll be honest. As much as I enjoyed Sunset Boulevard when it first opened over two decades ago, I never expected the show to come back to Broadway. After all while it did win several Tony Awards, it was by all account purposes a failure financially. Thankfully for this new production they have scaled it down. Plus I guess if you're going to do it again it helps to have it's original Tony Award wining star back again. I am of course talking about the one and only Glenn Close. Previews for the limited engagement is set to begin on March 2. Expect the show to be one hot ticket theatre fans.

War PaintWar Paint
First Preview: March 7
Opens: April 6

Now except for what I have read online, I know nothing about this show. Well except that it stars Tony winners Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole as cosmetic titans Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden, and that is was the most successful production in the history of the Goodman Theatre. But let's be honest shall we? Isn't that all we need? Two Broadway divas in a brand new show? That's enough for me.

Sweat
First Preview: March 4
Opens: march 26

Finally. A brand new American play by one of the theatre's most critically acclaimed writers is opening on Broadway. I know. I know. It's not like it's never happened before. It's just that with the exception of last season's Eclipsed it doesn't happen that often. In fact after a little research, I discovered that prior to Eclipsed the last play produced on Broadway by a black female writer was back in 2002. Here's hoping we won't have to wait another decade or so for the next one.

AmélieAmelie
First Preview: March 9
Opens: April 3

Well would you look at that. A new Broadway musical based on a movie What will they think of next theatre fans? All kidding aside I have heard nothing but good things about the show during it's recent run last year at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The show, which is scheduled to begin previews at the intimate Walter Kerr Theatre on March 9, stars Tony nominee Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) in the title role. Here's hoping lighting strikes twice for this talented ingénue.

Hello Dolly
First Preview: March 15
Opens: April 20
That's right theatre fans. Dolly Levi is back where she belongs. Bette Midler too. Now in case you've been living under a rock the last six months you know that the Divine Miss M is making her return to the musical theatre stage in a brand new production of Hello Dolly. The show, which is scheduled to begin performances a the historic Shubert Theatre on March 15 is already selling like gangbusters. In fact it sold over nine million dollars on it's first day of sale. A record by the way. I smell a hit!

So there you have it theatre fans. Stay tuned for Part Three on the 2016-2017 Broadway season. Until next time theatre fans.

Tony Awards Set To Return To Radio City Music Hall In 2017

Image resultExciting news theatre fans. The Tony Awards are coming home. It was just announced that this years Tony Awards will be held at the historic Radio City Music Hall on June 11. Last year's awards were held at the Beacon Theatre, which holds over 3,000 less seats than Radio City Music Hall.

Now there was speculation that the show may not return due to the upcoming Summer Spectacular. Thankfully the schedules worked out and the show will return back where it belongs. This year's Tony nominations are set to be announced on May 2. Stay tuned to this site for more info as we get closer to the date. Until next time theatre fans.

Avenue Q Celebrates Milestone

Avenue QOne of the funniest shows that I have ever seen is Avenue Q. In fact, I just saw it for the sixth time at the end of 2016. What can I say? I'm a fan. Trust me. I'm not the only one. After all a show doesn't survive all these years if it isn't good right? In fact, today will mark the show's 3,000 performance.

Pretty impressive for a show featuring a bunch of beer drinking, sex crazed puppets. O.K. There not that bad. Not all the time that is. The show, which won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical, is one show you do not want to miss. Plus if you call right now, you can tickets to see this award winning musical at prices that can't be beat.

Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru February 26, it is for select seats, and as always subject to availability. Get your tickets to see Avenue Q Off-Broadway at New World Stages. You will laugh your a** off. I know I did.Until next time theatre fans.

Get Your Tickets To See Miss Saigon With Applause Theatre Service

Miss SaigonThat's right theatre fans. In less than two months Miss Saigon will be back on the Great White Way. Not only that, but it is returning to it's original home, the Broadway Theatre. Previews for the highly anticipated revival are set to begin on March 1, with opening night set for March 23.

The show, which premiered in the West End in November 2015, is scheduled to play thru January 14, 2018. Now I've been in this business for a long time. So unless there is a star in the show, there is always a chance that a limited run, turns into an open-ended one. Here's hoping the show sticks around for a while. I know I would happy about it.

Now for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you have come to the right place. We sell it. In fact we sell every new play and musical opening on Broadway this year. Get your tickets to see Miss Saigon on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre. It is one show you will never forget. Until next time theatre fans.

What To See In 2017: Part One

Sunday in the Park with GeorgeHard to believe that 2016 is over huh?  It seems like only yesterday that I was celebrating the end of 2015, and here we are in 2017. Time sure does fly doesn't it? Especially in the big bad city. So now, as we embark on a new year, I figured it was time to showcase all the brand new shows set to open on the Great White Way in the coming months. And away we go!

August Wilson's Jitney
Samuel J. Friedman Theatre
Opens: January 19

What's that? A new August Wilson play on Broadway? Now technically it's not new, as the show premiered in 1982. However this is the first time that the show has ever been on Broadway. The play, which is being directed by Tony Award winner, and August Wilson alum Ruben Santiago-Hudson, is set to open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on January 19. Now I am a huge August Wilson fan. I have been ever since I saw Two Trains Running on Broadway back in 1992. That production started Lawrence Fishburne, who won a Tony Award for his performance. Are you seeing a pattern here theatre fans? August Wilson + Broadway = Tony Awards. I hope I didn't just jinx it. I guess we will soon find out.

Sunday In The Park With George
Hudson Theatre
First Preview: February 11
Opens: February 23
Closes: April 23

One of the most unexpected evenings I ever spent in the theatre was during the 2008 Broadway revival of this show. So there I sat in the Rear Orchestra getting ready for the show to begin. Cut to two and half hours later and I knew that I was just witness to one of the greatest productions I have ever seen. Now we are some nine years later and the show is poised to take Broadway by storm once again. This new production is starring Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford. Excited yet theatre fans?

The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie
First Preview: February 14
Opens: March 23

One of the theatre's most celebrated plays, is headed back to the Great White Way in a brand new production, directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold (Fun Home, Othello). Oh and did I mention that it also stars two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field as Amanda Wingfield. That alone is worth the price of admission theatre fans. Expect The Glass Menagerie  to be a big contender at this year's Tony Award.

Significant Other
First Preview: February 14
Opens: March 2

A new American play by an up and coming playwright on Broadway? Count me in theatre fans. Writer Joshua Harmon, who's critically acclaimed production of Bad Jews opened Off-Broadway in 2012, will make his Broadway debut with Significant Other. Here's hoping it will be just as successful on the big stage. Fingers crossed.

The Price
First Preview: February 16
Opens: March 16

Let me just say that I can not wait to see this show. Not only am I a huge Arthur Miller fan, but I am super excited to see this production finally getting it's due on Broadway after all these years. Yes I know that it's only been seventeen years since the last revival. But who's counting? After all, Gypsy and La Cage Aux Folles have had multiple revivals in the last two decades. How about a little love for one of America's greatest playwright's am I right?

Come From AwayCome From Away
First Preview: February 18
Opens: March 12

For those of my fellow New Yorkers who were here on 9/11, you know that it is a day that we will never forget. It was a day that not only changed our lives, but the lives of a nation. It's hard to believe that this year will mark the sixteenth year since that terrible tragedy. Since that time, there have been countless films and television shows recounting that horrible day. Now here we are in 2017, and we are about to experience it once again. This time in musical form. Now when the show was first announced I wasn't sure what to think about it. To be honest I still don't. But I'm willing to give it a chance.

So there you have it theatre fans. Quite the upcoming season don't you think? Stay tuned for Part Two on the 2016-2017 Broadway. Until next time theatre fans.
