That's right theatre fans. It's that time again. Time to celebrate another show opening on the Great White Way. Last night, the highly anticipated, yet controversial production of West Side Story opened at the Broadway Theatre.
The show, which is being directed by Tony Award winner Ivan Van Hove, began previews at the Broadway Theatre on December 10.Now I know what you're thinking. Two months of previews for a show that first opened over sixty years ago? Seems like a lot right?
Yes and no.For starters, this new production is a re-imagining of this iconic show, complete with new choreography, as well as a technical aspect that from what I can tell, has never been done before.
Plus due to injury by the show's leading man Isaac Powell, the show's opening night was pushed back by a couple of weeks. I guess we now know why the reason for such a long preview period huh? Which brings us to the twenty-five thousand dollar question. What did the critic's have to say? Did they love it? Did they hate it? Let's find out shall we?
