What a way to start the week theatre fans. It was just announced, that Little Shop of Horrors is headed back to New York in September. Now before you start wondering what Broadway theatre it's going into, you can stop wondering. Why you ask? Because the beloved musical is not going to the Great White Way.Instead it's headed Off-Broadway to the Westside Arts Theatre. Previews are set to begin on September 17, with opening night scheduled for October 17, Leading the cast are Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff as Seymour, two-time Tony Award nominee Tammy Blanchard as Audrey, and two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle as Orin. Now that is what I call an all-star cast theatre fans.
The show, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1982 at the Orpheum Theatre, features music by Academy Award winner Alan Menken, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, and direction by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. Now I for one am happy to see the show returning to it's Off-Broadway roots. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the 2003 Broadway production. I just feel it plays better in a more intimate space.
