New Musical Based On The Notebook To Premier In Chicago This Fall

Image result for the notebook logoO.K. I'll admit it. I loved The Notebook. What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic. Featuring a score by Platinum selling recording artist Ingrid Michaelson, and a book by writer and producer Bekah Brunstetter (This Is Us), The Notebook is scheduled to begin performances at The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare on September 6, 2020 and play thru November 8. Directing the show is four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Grief (Dear Evan Hansen, Rent).

Published in 1996, the Nicholas Sparks novel debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List in it's first week in release. And while the 2004 film received mixed reviews, it was a hit at the box office, and won multiple awards including eight Teen Choice Awards. As of now, no further creative team members or casting has been announced. Be sure to check this website for further updates. Until next time theatre fans.

Blue Directed By Phylicia Rashad To Play New York's Historic Apollo Theatre This Spring

Prior to working for Applause, I worked in the box office for the Roundabout Theatre Company, where I had the opportunity to see each and every one of their shows during their season. One of those shows was a Blue, by Charles Randolph Wright.

That production, which had it's Off- Broadway premier at the Gramercy Theatre in 2001, starred Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, and Tony Award nominee Michael McElroy. Cut too almost nineteen years later, and the show is set to return to New York once again, only this time with Mrs. Rashad at the helm.

Now when the show was first announced in 2019, the play was scheduled to play at a Broadway theatre during the 2019-2020 season. Wouldn't you know it, but all of the venues are booked up. Well you know what they say? "When one door closes, another door opens."

The show, which is set to star Tony Award winner Leslie Uggams and Emmy Award winner Lynn Whitfield, is set to play a 16-week engagement beginning on April 27. Oh and did I mention that we are selling tickets for it? Well we are. Get your tickets to see Blue at the Apollo Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

Grand Horizons Reviews

in Grand HorizonsWhat's that? Two Broadway plays opening in the same week? What is this April? Last night, marked the Broadway premier of Grand Horizons.

Written by Bess Wohl, and directed by Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk winner Leigh Silverman, Grand Horizons stars Tony and Emmy winner Jane Alexander and Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner James Cromwell as Nancy and Bill, who have been married for fifty years.

As they settle into their new home, Nancy unexpectedly walks out, leaving their sons Brian and Ben to pick up the pieces of their once happy family. Rounding out the cast are Michael Urie (Torch Song) and Ben McKenzie (Gotham) as the two bothers, as well as Tony Award winner Priscilla Lopez, Ashley Park, and Maulik Pancholy. So what did the critic's have to say? Let's find out.

Customer Story

To Kill A MockingbirdToday's customer story comes all the way from the great state of Texas. Austin to be exact. A couple of days ago, I received a call from one of my regular customers who's client was planning a trip to New York in March, and wanted to see a few shows while they were here.

I asked him when they would be here, and most importantly what they wanted to see. Well of course two of the shows they picked, are among some of the most popular shows on Broadway. Care to take a guess? Why it's none other than To Kill A Mockingbird and Ain't Too Proud.

Two good choices don't you think? Now even though she picked a weekend, I knew I would still be able to find her great seats for both as it was not a holiday weekend. For To Kill A Mockingbird I get them excellent seats in the Center Orchestra, and for a price that was lower than even I was expecting. One down. Two to go.

To say that I was thrilled that they picked Ain't Too Proud is an understatement. Not only are The Temptations my favorite group of all time, but I have also seen the show several times. That means I know where the best seats are at to see the show. Once again, I got them amazing seats in the Center Orchestra, and of course once again at a great price. Two down. One to go.

Their third and final pick was The Book of Mormon. Now believe it or not but in all the years that I have lived here, I have never seen it. However I have seen other shows in the same theatre, and it is one of the smallest ones on Broadway. Translation, all the seats are great. Which means once again I got them great seats, and wouldn't you know it, but at a great price too. So there you have it folks. Three great shows, with great seats and amazing prices to boot. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

Winter Savings With Applause Theatre Service

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts 1 and 2Heading to the "Big Apple" in the next month or so? Well of course you are going to see a show or two while you are here right? But why stop at two? How about three or four? After all, New York is the "Theatre Capitol of the World" is it not? In the almost three decades that I have lived here, I have seen hundreds of shows both On and Off-Broadway. And you know what? I bet I've only paid full price a dozen or so times.

Now I know what you're thinking. How is that even possible? Well to be honest, being in the industry that I am in I often get free tickets to shows. Does that mean that I get free tickets to everything? Certainly not. I mean I certainly didn't get a deal when I saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. However since the show has been playing for a while now, prices have never been lower. That's the great thing about going to the theatre this time of year. So many savings.

In fact as we speak, there are over thirty plays and musicals that are now available at prices that can't be beat. Some of those include recent Tony Award winners like Come From Away and To Kill A Mockingbird, as well as such long running favorites like Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera. I mean who doesn't love a bargain? I know I sure do. Oh and did I mention that we sell all of those shows, as well as each and every show and event in New York City? Well we do. So why not give us a try? You'll be glad you did. Until next time theatre fans.

What To See In London's West End

EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUT JAMIEHeading across the pond in the next few months? Well have I got exiting news for you theatre fans. Now is the best time to see some of the finest plays and musicals this side of well....Broadway.As we speak, there are over forty plays and musicals playing in London. The only question you have to ask yourself is, "Which ones do I see?"

Thankfully, you have come to the right place. Now while I have personally never been to London, I am very familiar with it's theatre scene. How you ask? Well it helps that a lot of it's shows have either played in New York before, or are playing here now. One of those shows, happens to be a personal favorite of mine.

Care to guess which one I'm talking about? Why it's none other than City of Angels, which won six 1990 Tony Awards, including Best Musical of the Year. Since then, it has played London twice, both in 1994 and 2015. Not only that, but both also went on to win Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, and Best Musical Revival.

Now you see why it's coming back for a third time? Performances for this award winning musical are set to begin at the Garrick Theatre on March 5, 2020. Another show you might want to check out while you are over there is Pretty Woman The Musical. Now while the show had a short run on Broadway last year, I really enjoyed it. Was it the greatest thing that I had ever seen? No. But I was entertained, and sometimes that's all you need.

Now for those of you Disney fans out there, do I have some exciting news. Next month will mark the West End premier of The Prince of Egypt. Winner of the 1998 Academy Award for Best Song of the Year, the show features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), and a book by Phillip LaZebink. Performances are scheduled to begin at the Dominion Theatre on February 5. Now what if musicals aren't your thing?

To be honest when I first moved here twenty-eight years ago, all I wanted to see was a big splashy musical. However in the last ten or eleven years,I have seen more plays than ever. One that stands out was the 2008 production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull starring Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas. This new production, which begins performances a the Playhouse Theatre on March 11, stars Emmy Award nominee Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones).

One of Broadway's biggest hit's of the past decade is To Kill A Mockingbird. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, and adapted Academy and Emmy Award winner Aaron Sorkin, the show is scheduled to begin performances at the Gielgud Theatre on May 21.One of the funniest shows that I have seen in years is The Play That Goes Wrong. The show, which is now in it's sixth year at the Duchess Theatre, is a laugh out loud riot that you do not want to miss theatre fans. Now besides that shows that I wrote about, here is a list of others I suggest checking out during your visit to "Merry Old England."

Everybody's Talking About Jamie
Les Miserables
Matilda
School of Rock
Thriller Live
The Comedy About A Bank Robbery
The Mousetrap
Waitress
The Woman In Black

By the way, for those of you that want tickets to any of these shows that I talked about you are in luck. We sell it. In fact, we sell every play and musical in the West End. Not only that, but we sell tickets to all events in London including opera and ballet, as well as all sporting events including soccer as well as this Summer's Wimbledon. Who knew? Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cinderella To Open In London Later This Year

CinderellaWhat's that you say? A new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opening in London in 2020? Count me in theatre fans. Although to be honest I'll probably have to wait until it comes here. Fingers crossed.

Cinderella, which features an original story and book by Emerald Fennel (Killing Eve), and lyrics by Tony Award winner David Zippel (City Of Angels), is being directed by Laurence Connor (Miss Saigon), and choreographed by JoAnn Hunter (School of Rock).

Now unlike previous productions of Cinderella, this one has a more modern take on the classic tale of a princess who loses her glass slipper. Performances are set to begin at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in September 2020. As of now no on sale date or cast have been announced. Be sure to check this site for further updates. New Musical Sing Street To Open On Broadway This Spring

Sing Street_NYTW_Off-Broadway_Production Photos_2019_X_HRIn December 2011, a new musical called Once opened Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop. It went on to be a huge hit, transferring to Broadway, and winning eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical of the Year. So what does this have to do with today's blog?

Well as it turns out the new musical Sing Street, which is set to open on Broadway in March, got it's start at the same Off-Broadway Theatre. Not only that, but the shows book writer is the same one from Once. Seeing a pattern? The show, based on the 2016 indie film of the same name, is scheduled to begin previews at the Lyceum Theatre on March 26, with opening night set for April 19.

Set in Dublin in the 1980's, Sing Street features a New Wave score by John Carney and Gary Clark, a book by Tony Award winner Enda Walsh, choreography by Sonya Tayeh, and direction by Tony Award winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent). See Broadway's Newest Hit Jagged Little Pill For Less

Jagged Little PillStill haven't seen Jagged Little Pill on Broadway yet? Well theatre fans, there is no better time than the present. The show, which opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on December 5, features a book by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (Juno), and direction by Tony Award winner Diana Paulus (Pippin, Waitress). So what is the show all about?

Well, according to a BuzzFeed article on the pre- Broadway Cambridge production, "Jagged Little Pill features a woman, Mary Jane Healy, in a sexless marriage and secretly addicted to painkillers. Her daughter, Frankie, is adopted and Black and has to deal with her mother’s “colorblind” world view. Frankie also explores her queerness with her genderqueer best friend, Jo. The show also features a plot about Mary Jane’s son, Nick, whose best friend is accused of raping one of Frankie’s best friends."

Well it's not Disney that's for sure. Although if I'm being honest, it is exactly the kind of show that I like. And clearly I am not the only one as the show has gotten great reviews from critic's and audiences alike. Now as I mentioned, now is the best time to get tickets for this exciting show. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru March 4, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability. A few days ago I got a call from a travel agent who's client was planning a trip to New York next month, and wanted to see a couple of shows while they were here. Her choices? That's right. I am talking about none other than Mean Girls and Dear Evan Hansen. Now since both shows had been playing for a while, I knew I would have no problem getting them good seats. Plus since February is usually considered a slow time in New York, I was able to get them at a much lower price.

Well they loved that. Not only that but I got them seats in the Center Front Mezzanine, which in case you are wondering, is the best view for both shows. So there you have it folks. Two great shows, with great seats and prices to boot. Another satisfied customer. Will you be next?

My Name is Lucy BartonLet me just start off by saying that I am a huge Laura Linney fan. Which is why you might find it surprising that I have never seen her on stage. Weird right? Here's hoping I will finally get my chance with her latest production.

My Name Is Lucy Barton, adapted by Rona Munro, from Elizabeth Strout's best selling novel, tells the story of Lucy Barton, who after awakening from an operation, is startled by the sudden appearance of her mother.

Over the course of several days, the two begin to reconnect, after years of not speaking to one another. Directed by five-time Tony Award nominee Richard Eyre, this new solo play, is scheduled to open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on January 15, and play thru February 29. By the way, for those of you who want tickets to see the show, you have come to the right place. We sell it.

Plus if you call right now, you can get tickets to see the show at prices that can't be beat. Be advised that while this "Special Offer" is good thru February 29, it is for select seats only, and as always subject to availability.
