Exciting news theatre fans. One of last year's most critically acclaimed plays is headed to the Great White Way. Hangmen, written by Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Martin McDonagh (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,), is set to begin previews at the John Golden Theatre on February 28, with opening night scheduled for March 29.The show, directed by Matthew Dunster, premiered at London's Royal Court Theatre in September 2015, where it went on to win the Olivier Award, Critics' Circle Theatre Awards, and the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for Best Play. So what is the show all about? Well I'll tell you.
Set in London in 1965, Hangmen centers around executioner and pub owner Harry Wade. After the abolition of hangings, Harry's pub is soon overtaken by a group of questionable characters, including stranger Moody who proceeds to flirt with Harry's fifteen year old daughter Shirley.
After convincing Harry he has kidnapped and killed his daughter, Moody is hung by Harry illegally, which as it turns out, was his plan all along.
