That's right theatre fans. One of the theatre's most acclaimed stars is set to return to the Great White Way for the first time in over six years. Alan Cumming, the Tony Award winning star of stage and screen will begin previews on April 7 in Macbeth. The show which is scheduled to open at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on April 21 will play a limited engagement thru June 30.
Now let's face it. Everybody has heard of Macbeth and chances are most of you have read it or seen a production if it sometime in your life. It is a classic after all. However this new production is a little different. What do I mean by that? Direct from acclaimed, sold-out engagements at the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival, Tony and Olivier Award winner ("Cabaret") and two-time Emmy nominee ("The Good Wife") Alan Cumming returns to Broadway this spring in a thrilling one-man interpretation of Shakespeare's darkest and most powerful tragedy, Macbeth.
This Macbeth is set in a clinical room deep within a dark psychiatric unit. Cumming is the lone patient, reliving the infamous story and inhabiting each role himself. Closed circuit television cameras watch the patient's every move as the walls of the psychiatric ward come to life in a visually stunning multi-media theatrical experience of Shakespeare's notorious tale of desire, ambition and the supernatural.
Sounds like an interesting night in the theatre if you ask me. Tickets for the show to be directed by fellow Tony winner John Tiffany (Once) went on sale last week and are already selling like crazy.
