That's right theatre fans. You can now get tickets to see Memphis in the West End. The show, which won four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year, opened in London at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 23, 2014 to rave reviews. Being in the business that we are in, we often get tickets to see all of the new show's prior to opening.
That way when people call asking what the show is about, we can tell them. Well that and whether we liked it or not. Now it's not very often that my coworkers and I agree on a show. However in the case of Memphis, it was unanimous. We all loved it. I mean how could you not? It has a great story, and a score that will have you tapping your feet all night long.
Which by the way in case you didn't know was written by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan. That alone was enough to make me want to see it. Oh and did I mention that he also won the Tony Award that year for Best Score? Pretty impressive for a rock guy making his Broadway debut. I know I'm impressed. O.K. so now that you know who wrote it, you probably want to know what it's about right? Well let's get right to it shall we? Here is a brief synopsis about Memphis for you to peruse. Enjoy!
Inspired by the legendary DJ Dewey Phillips and set against a rock-and-roll score, Memphis follows a 1950s disc jockey who plays African-American music for his white listeners, and soon he begins to fall for a talented black singer. Memphis follows the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Join them on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves – filled with laughter, soul and rock 'n' roll!
Starring the Queen of British soul, multi-award-winning recording artist Beverley Knight (The Bodyguard) as club singer 'Felicia Farrell' and West end star Killian Donnelly (The Commitments, Billy Elliot the Musical, Les Misérables) as radio DJ 'Huey Calhoun', Memphis will leave you feeling exhilarated by its explosive blend of electrifying music, soaring emotion and roof-raising energy.
Well I'm sold. How about you? So how do you get tickets? I guess you could wait until you get over to London and hope that they are still available. That's one option I guess. Or you could just make it easy on yourself and let us do it for you. That's right. Just give us a call and one of our friendly ticket experts at Applause will do the rest. See? I told you it was easy. Get your tickets to see Memphis at the Shaftsbury Theatre in London. It is one show you don't want to miss. Until next time theatre fans.
