Let me just start off by saying that one of my favorite theatre memories of the last decade was the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening. Now here we are almost nine years later, and the show is coming back to Broadway in a way that no one could have ever expected. So I know what you're thinking? What makes this production so different from the last one? Well for one over half of the performers in the show are deaf.
Now believe it or not but this is not the first time that Broadway has seen a show featuring hearing impaired actor's. In fact in 2003, there was a revival of Big River, that received universal acclaim and was nominated for Best Musical Revival of the Year. That production, like this one was produced by the California based Deaf West Theatre Company. Set in 1891 Germany, Spring Awakening tells the story of a group of teenagers and their struggles with sex and adolescence. Oh and did I mention it's all set to rock music?
By the way, the original production won eight 2007 Tony Awards including Best Musical of the Year. Let's hope this one is just as successful. Previews for the show are set to begin at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on September 8, 2015, with opening night set for September 27. As of now the show is scheduled for a limited run of only eighteen weeks. However if reviews are good I would not be surprised if it extends. Fingers crossed. Get your tickets to see Spring Awakening on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Who knows? Maybe I'll see you there. Until next time theatre fans.
