Has it really been almost ten years since The Color Purple first opened on the Great White Way? I remember seeing the show right before it opened. Even then I knew it would be a big hit. Luckily I was right, as the show went on to run for over two years on Broadway, where it recouped it's entire investment in the first year.Not only that, but the show enjoyed a successful national tour that played across the country for over six years. This new production, to be directed by Tony winner John Doyle (Company, The Visit), is set to begin previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on November 10, with opening night scheduled for December 3.
Making her Broadway debut in the role of Shug, is Academy and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson, and Cynthia Erivo who will reprise her performance as Celia. Now for those of you that are not familiar with the show, here is a brief synopsis of The Color Purple for you to peruse. Enjoy!
