Priscilla Queen of the Desert New York City
Every once in a while, the continent that we call Australia reminds us in a big way that they are alive and kicking. The most recent way they have made their presence known is through their latest musical export – a show called Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Priscilla is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for those who like their musicals to be sunshine and rainbows and written by Stephen Sondheim. Priscilla is crude, rude, and absolutely hysterical. If you count yourself amongst those who enjoy drags queens, over the top disco music, and amazing Australian one liners, Priscilla Queen of the Desert will have you rolling in the aisles.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert Broadway show is the story of three aging drag queens living in Sydney. Each of them is in a bit of a rut for various reasons and they all decide to accept a gig on the other side of the country in a city called Alice Springs. This involves a journey across the outback in a bus they name Priscilla. Along the way they encounter bigotry, friendship, and a whole slew of small town characters.
The show is over the top in practically every way. From the lip synching and hip thrusting to the neon feathers adorning every inch of costume, Priscilla Queen of the Desert embraces the disco drag queen theme. And just when you thought that the show couldn’t get any more camp, it comes back to surprise you with the touching relationships that begin to emerge between the characters. Though they spend the majority of the two hours singing and dancing their way across a desert, the three men somehow manage to reveal hidden and very human parts of themselves as well.
