Forbidden Broadway is an Off Broadway show that originated in 1982. The show is selling discount tickets for all performances through April 28, 2013 right now at New York's 47th Street Theatre. It is a very funny "spoof" that has been constantly updating itself over the years, making fun of the top shows that play on Broadway. Although they constantly change the material in the show to reflect each season's new plays and musicals, Forbidden Broadway still pokes fun at long time shows like The Lion King, Death of a Salesman, Anything Goes, The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and others.
This season, Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking has created hilarious rewrites of songs that you've come to know as well as their own "impressions" of many casts of the shows of Porgy and Bess, Anything Goes, Spiderman, Follies, The Book of Mormon, Once The Musical, Nice Work if You Can Get It and many more.
The cast of four very talented actors include Natalie Charle Ellis, Scott Richard Foster, Jenny Lee Stern and Marcus Stevens. The creator, Writer and director for every edition of Forbidden Broadway as well as Forbidden Hollywood in New York, Los Angeles, London and throughout the world is the very talented Gerard Alessandrini. He has rewritten Forbidden Broadway nearly 20 times and each version includes very funny parodies of what each Broadway show has in its own show.
I've had the chance to witness Forbidden Broadway firsthand a few times and would highly recommend it as a nice addition to seeing a major Broadway production. Over the years the show has won 9 Drama Desk Awards, a Special Tony Award, An Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award and a Drama League award.
