If you have had the good fortune to see Matilda The Musical (played nearly 4 years on Broadway, won several Tony Awards in 2013 and closed on January 1-2017 after 1555 performances), then you're in for a special treat. The producers of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are bringing their recent London stage hit musical to play at NYC's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre this Spring. Previews begin on March 28, 2017 prior to an official opening that will take place on April 23, 2017. This will allow the show to be eligible for Tony Awards nominations for the 2017 Broadway season.
Famous British novelist Roald Dahl, who is known as a great screenwriter, short story writer, novelist and poet, who wrote this incredibly magical story about a young boy by the name of Charlie, who comes from impoverished means but who is one of 5 contest winners who gets to be led on a tour by Willy Wonka of his famous chocolate factory. The most famous in the world.
Mr. Dahl is known for bringing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, You Only Live Twice (the 5th James Bond film which starred Sean Connery) and so many others to the big screen. Although Mr. Dahl died many years ago, his legacy lives on. Ten percent of all of Roald Dahls income goes to their charity partners which include the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity and the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. They support many great causes which help provide specialist children's nurses as well as providing for special grants for needy families and educational programs. It's no surprise that his books are being turned into London and Broadway blockbuster musicals. I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a year and a half ago in London and enjoyed the show immensely. It will appeal to youngsters as well as their parents and even be enjoyed by older people as well. After all, I was 59 years old when I saw this excellent show.
Broadway star Christian Borle, a two-time Tony Award winner for his roles in Peter and the Starcatcher and Something Rotten!, will play the role of Willy Wonka. Mr. Borle will be wonderful in this role as he is a tremendous acting talent.
World famous songs which include "The Candy Man" (a big hit recorded by Sammy Davis) when I was a youngster and "Pure Imagination" and many other terrific songs written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) with a book written by playwright David Greig, choreography by Emmy Award winner Joshua Bergasse and direction by the incomparable Jack O'Brien, three-time Tony Award winner (Hairspray, Henry IV, The Coast of Utopia) will make this show shine. This creative team is sure to help make Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a longterm success on Broadway.
