Hollywood Comes To Broadway This Spring

Following on the heels that 2-Time Oscar Winner Jane Fonda will return to Broadway this Spring in 33 Variations comes the announcement that several more Hollywood hitters will be treading the boards in the next few months.First up is Impressionism a new play starring Tony winner and Oscar nominee Joan Allen and Tony and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons. Tony winner Jack O'Brien will direct the production, which will begin previews Feb. 28, 2009, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Opening night is scheduled for March 12. Ostar Productions will produce Impressionism, which, press notes state, "is the story of a world traveling photojournalist and a New York gallery owner who discover each other and also that there might be an art to repairing broken lives."

Next up is God of Carnage. This new play by Tony winner Yasmina Reza(Art)will begin previews at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre Feb. 28 with an official opening set for March 22. God of Carnage which is being translated by Chhristoper Hampton stars Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden. The play, according to press notes, "is a comedy of manners without the manners. The play deals with the aftermath of a playground altercation between two boys and what happens when their parents meet to talk about it."

Now if those last two weren't enough to get you excited then maybe this one will. It was just announced that Oscar winners Susan Sarandon and Geoffrey Rush will start in a revival of Eugene Ionesco's Exit the King. Performances will begin March 7 with an official opening March 26; the limited engagement will run through June 14.Exit the King, according to press notes, "is a hilarious and poignant comedy about a megalomaniacal ruler, King Berenger (Rush) whose incompetence has left his country in near ruin. Despite the efforts of Queen Marguerite (Sarandon) and the other members of the court to convince the King he has only 90 minutes left to live, he refuses to relinquish any control"

In all my years in New York I can't recall this many big name stars on Broadway at the same time. Expect this years Tony race to be quite a competition.
