(Editor's note.In honor of the opening of Hair I decided to re-post my very first blog. It was written on August 16,2007. My how time flies.)
April 29, 1968. Anybody know what happened on that date? Well like most people I know, myself included, I was not alive in 1968. Heck I didn't even discover musicals until 1984. I mean let's be realistic the last thing a wild 11 year old wants to do is sit in a stuffy old theatre when instead he could be outside playing baseball with his buddies. Then one Easter Sunday that all changed. I remember my 5th Grade music teacher Mrs. Dawson told us about her favorite movie. The Sound of Music. Now at first the idea of watching a story about a nun who takes care of a bunch of kids in Pre-Nazi Germany didn't really interest me. But I figured I might as well give it a shot. Besides since I wasn't doing that hot in music class maybe watching the movie might secure some brownie points with my teacher. As soon as I got home I asked my Mom if we could watch the movie. To this day I still remember her exact words." Do you know how long The Sound of Music is? Three hours. There is now way you are going to be able to sit still for that long." I always like a challenge. Well not only did I watch the whole movie but I was glued to my seat the entire time. I didn't even get up during the commercials. From then on I was hooked. Over the years my love for the theatre has grown even more. Of course after living in New York for the past 15 years my tastes have changed. When I first moved here I would have run to see shows like Crazy For You or 42nd Street. Heck back then I might even have liked Mary Poppins. Not that there is anything wrong with those type of shows. Their just not my cup of tea. My favorite show is Rent. It has been since the first time I saw it back in April 1996. Over the years I have seen it over 20 times. And it never gets old. I still love it for the same reasons. Even after all these years I still cry in the same places. Who says a real man can't show emotion? I remember when Rent first opened people were calling it the "Hair of the 90's". Maybe that's true. Maybe it's not. What it did was give the kids of my generation something to believe in and do something that today in my opinion doesn't happen enough in the theatre. Rent makes you think and above all it makes you care. Not to mention the fact that it showcases music that speaks to me and to so many others. People in the 60's had Hair. In the 90's it was Rent. in 2007 it is Spring Awakening. What will be Broadways next "Rock" musical. Will we have to wait another 10 years to see the next one. I hope not. And by the way the answer to my little Trivia question was "Hair" That's where it all started. By remembering the past it will help make the future even that much brighter.

Applause Theater Service offers a Weekly Broadway Show Discount Update
We like to think of ourselves as the "local Broadway ticket expert". You know, a place where people can come to for advice on what Broadway Shows to see, where to sit in the theater, how much to pay for discount to premium seating and ask just about any question they might have when planning a day or night on Broadway. We often even suggest fun places to dine before the show your going to see. Could you ask for anything more?
With dozens of places to call and web sites to look through when researching Broadway events, have you considered talking to "local" ticket providers in New York City? Most people click on a web site displaying Broadway Show logos and don't realize that most of the time they are looking at similar information from web site to web site. The problem with this is simple, everyone looks the same. I have a solution for you.
Every week, I write a blog with pertinent information on up-to-date discount pricing for every Broadway Show playing. Here's my very own personal expert advice on current show discounts. If you are thinking about obtaining tickets to a show not on this list like Wicked, Jersey Boys, Billy Elliot or The Lion King-these four shows are not offering discounts right now but we can give you advice on them as well. In time they will offer discount seats for sure, once they stop "selling out" most of their performances. For now, there are still over 20 shows below I suggest you see for less than their usual "selling price".
If you feel like talking about theater, we'd love to hear from you. You can simply call us Applause Theater Service locally in New York City seven days a week at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 1-800-451-9930. Applause is a New York State licensed ticket agency offering advice and the ability to purchase discounts for Broadway Shows. Here's the current list:
33 Variations
39 Steps
9 to 5 The Musical

Well friends, that's all for now. If you want to talk about Broadway theater, give us a call when you get a chance. I'll be back soon with more Broadway theater discount updates.

"God of Carnage" Gets Rave Reviews!
Well, so far this season I think I've been right on as far as how the critics would react to certain shows. This is certainly no exception. "God of Carnage" opened this past Sunday to rave reviews and in my book deserves to win the Tony for Best Play this year.
Performed by Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden(Best Actress so far) under Matthew Warchus’s direction, the most maniacally mundane of horrors becomes magically theatrical. My side hurt from all the laughter at many points throughout the show. You must check this show out and don't wait too long to get tickets, it's a limited run and already very difficult to get tickets for. Call Applause Theatre Service now to get your tickets at a great price. 800-451-9930
I've put together most of the reviews for you to check out for yourself;
[ NYT ] Rumble in the Living Room, by Ben Brantley
God of Carnage definitely delivers the cathartic release of watching other people's marriages go boom.
[ NYP ] Upper-Middle-Class Clowns, by Elisabeth Vincentelli
After making you laugh, Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage leaves a bitter aftertaste. This Howitzer blast against bourgeois-bohemian hypocrisy could easily be staged as a drama. But it certainly isn't done that way here, and that's just fine—it's been a while since Broadway's seen such gleefully nasty fun.
[ DN ] Oh, God of Carnage, that's whacky theater, by Joe Dziemianowicz
James Gandolfini is one of four first-class actors at the top of their game in the combustible comedy God of Carnage, which opened Sunday night and could be called "Grownups Gone Wild!"
[ ND ] Reviewed by Linda Winer
It's a jungle up there. What fun. The two middle-aged couples in the artsy-stark Brooklyn town house only appear to be civilized parents discussing a playground fight between their 11-year-old boys. Pay attention to the opening music. Those tribal drums are hardly incidental. In fact, there isn't a false cue in Yasmina Reza's brutally entertaining 85-minute satire.
[ NY1 ] Reviewed by Roma Torre
Yasmina Reza, who first stormed Broadway with her Tony-winning play Art 11 years ago, returns with another crowdpleasing comedy. God of Carnage doesn't quite match the artfulness of that first triumph, but it's a winner and the theatre gods are smiling yet again.

God of Carnage, the savvy and deliciously caustic new comedy of urban ill-manners from the French writer Yasmina Reza now at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre, shoots its entire clip of sardonic bullets in just 90 minutes
[ LAT ] Reviewed by Charles McNulty Civilization's thin veneer gets mercilessly stripped in French playwright Yasmina Reza's savage comedy about two urban couples attempting to maturely resolve an altercation that occurred between their 11-year-old sons in a neighborhood park.

Civility gets thoroughly trashed—along with a few other things—in Yasmina Reza's hilarious yet surprisingly thoughtful comedy.
[ B ] Gandolfini, Daniels Turn Kids' Brawl Into Class War, by John Simon
Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage proves superior entertainment at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. What a pleasant surprise to share a walloping good time with the audience at this comedy, whose ferocious title paradoxically reinforces the subtly furibund fun.
[ V ] Reviewed by David Rooney
With all the anger in the air in these dark days for the nation, there's a certain schadenfreude in watching Yasmina Reza's acid-dipped takedown of smug self-interest in God of Carnage. Examining how the straitjacket of civilized society can barely contain the primitive beast within, the fanged comedy picks an easy target in the complacent bourgeoisie. But the savagery of its dissection of interpersonal politics—marital, sexual, and civic—is played to perfection by a scorching cast in Matthew Warchus' pungent production.
[ BS ] Reviewed by David Sheward
Yasmina Reza's latest play is a well-crafted playwriting exercise rather than a believable character study.
[ ATW ] Adults Behaving Badly, by Andy Propst
Reza uses a childish incident—one boy hit another with a stick—to explore how delicate the social fabric is that keeps us two or three steps away from barbarism. It's a thoughtful premise that can invoke gales of laughter.

Next To Normal Begins Previews on March 27
The new musical Next To Normal is set to begin performances tonight on Broadway at the Booth Theatre. Following an acclaimed run Off-Broadway last year and another run at the Arena Stage in D.C. the show will officially open on April 15. Next To Normal, which was penned by Tom Kitt (music) and Brian Yorkey (book and lyrics), is "a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. It shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family's world intact," according to press notes.
I have heard nothing but good things about this show since it first premiered last year at the Second Stage Theatre in New York and I personally can not wait to see it. In a season full of revivals and movie to musical transfers it is nice to have something original on the Great White Way.I expect Next To Normal to be a major contender come Tony time.

Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical Returns to Broadway
Would you believe me if I told you that I danced with one of the young actresses tonight at the Al Hirschfeld Theater? I also got a hug from another actress at the end of this fantastic revival of HAIR, billed as an "American Tribal Love-Rock Musical". It's true friends. What a wonderful night at the theater.
The original production played at the Public Theater, produced by the incomparable Joseph Papp and the New York Theater Festival in October 1967. Hair then transferred to Broadway in 1968 and opened to rave reviews. The show has played all over the world and was made into a motion picture in 1979. The Public Theater brought Hair back for a limited run in the summer of 2008, as part of its free Shakespeare in the Park season. After garnering rave reviews, it seemed only natural to bring Hair back to Broadway once again. Hair, the revival of one of the greatest rock musicals ever, returns to Broadway and opens to critics reviews on Tuesday March 31, 2009.
Famous recording artists like Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey, Liza Minelli, Three Dog Night and The Fifth Dimension have recorded popular songs like "Aquarius", Good Morning Starshine", "Hair" and "Let The Sunshine In".
Mr. Papp often produced shows that were dealing with the most controversial issues of the day. The original production of Hair was quite controversial, dealing with the radical representation of that time's "counterculture". One that included the use of different "lingo", style of dress and the hippie lifestyle of that era, as well as the anti-war movement of the 1960's.
Although over 40 years have gone by since this fantastic show first played on Broadway, Hair has got my vote for "Best Revival" at this years Tony Awards that air in June. Let me tell you why.
The cast of this production of Hair sings, dances and creates an unbelievable amount of positive and uplifting energy. Throughout the entire two and one half hour show, this ensemble conveys the sense that they really are a very special "tribe". You not only get the feeling that they are clearly celebrating the hope, joy, love and freedom in their lives but they manage to "include" their audience and take us along with them as well. I was told when I bought my tickets that audience members are asked to dance in the aisle or on stage and I guess it was my lucky night. Dozens of my fellow audience members were asked to join the "love fest" on stage at the Al Hirschfeld Theater tonight. We all had so much fun. You simply need to experience it for yourself if you get a chance.
If you would like to talk about the revival of Hair or possibly obtain seats for the show, you can contact Applause Theater Service in New York. They are a local expert and an officially licensed New York State ticket agency for Hair as well as all the shows playing on Broadway.
I have been fortunate to have seen several hundred shows in my life so far, enjoying most of them. But you know, tonight was something "extra special" for me. I wish everyone involved with the revival of Hair the most success. I can see this fantastic show garnering several Tony Awards. They truly deserve it.
Best wishes to my fellow theater lovers.

Looking For Theatre Tickets in London? Applause Can Help.
Travelling to London soon? Need help in getting theatre tickets to the West End? Well you have come to the right place. Applause Theater and Entertainment can be your theatre connection across the pond.
You might ask yourself why you would come to a New York ticket agent to obtain tickets for London. Our motto at Applause is “real people that you can trust”.
Let me tell you a little bit of my background. Having spent my formative years going to boarding school in England, I am half English and still carry an English passport. I landed at Applause straight out of college and have been the sales manager of London for over 12 years now. With half my family still living across the pond and having many friends who still live there, I try to get over to England at least once a year. While I am visiting, I never miss a chance to stop in London to see the latest West End smash. Some of my favorites over the last couple of years have been Billy Elliot and We Will Rock You. Also new to the West End is Priscilla Queen Of The Desert which just opened to rave reviews. I have not seen it yet in London but was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to see in Sydney, Australia two years ago when I was travelling down under and it was a night of theatre I will never forget.

Check Out Broadways #1 Play-August:Osage County
Being in the ticket business we are often invited to see most of the shows playing On and Off-Broadway. That way when people call and ask about certain shows we can give our expert opinion. Now when it comes to my fellow co-workers and I we rarely agree on the same things when it comes to shows. That was not the case with August:Osage County. Hands down it is still one of the best shows running on Broadway. Now I know some of you may be turned off by the length of the show. It clocks in at 3 1/2 hours. Don't be. The show is a masterpiece from beginning to end. In fact it could have gone another four or five hours and I wouldn't have minded a bit. So if you are looking for a great night in the theatre look no further than August:Osage County. It is an experience that you will never forget.

Support Off-Broadway
Let's be honest. Most people that come to New York City to see a show want to see one on Broadway. Makes sense right? After all Broadway has been around for over one hundred years and counting. But what if the bright lights of the Great White Way is not what you are after. Well have I got the thing for you. Off-Broadway. Don't tell me you've never heard of it. Believe it or not but Off-Broadway has been a part of the New York City theatre scene for almost fifty years. Even as we speak there are over sixty shows currently running Off-Broadway and beyond. Why not give it a try. Who knows? You might even enjoy yourself.

Let The Sunshine In-Hair Is A Hit!
Last week I had the chance to see the current revival of Hair on Broadway. Having never seen the movie or any production for that matter I wasn't sure what to expect. Sure I knew a lot of the songs going in but that was it. Well after 2 1/2 hours I can honestly say that last Wednesday was truly one of the greatest nights that I have spent in a theater in a very long time. Not only did I love it but at the end of the show the entire audience leaped to their feet and gave the cast a very deserved standing ovation. Now for those of you who think you may be too old to appreciate it, or too young to understand the show or it's message then I have news for you. You're not. It doesn't matter if you're sixteen or sixty. Hair is about love and being happy with who you are no matter what others may think about you. Hair is universal. It will change your life. It did mine. I hope it will do the same for you.

Go See Jersey Boys Today...You Will Be Happy You Did!
Jersey Boys, winner of 4 Tony Awards including best musical in 2006, has been playing to sold out audiences night after night at the August Wilson Theatre. Sixties sensations The Four Seasons come to life in a musical tale about guys from the 'hood who make good. The story of the legendary Four Seasons, blue-collar boys who formed a singing group and reached the heights of rock 'n' roll stardom. The musical features such Seasons' hits as "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Oh What a Night" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
Oh what a night!…….it certainly was for me the first time I went to see it. Not being around in the 60’s and being not too familiar with the group the Four Seasons or their music I was not crazy about sitting through a story of their life. How wrong was I? The show was great. I even found myself singing along to some of the songs by the second act. I actually knew these songs..who knew? I also have a secret to share with you. I sat in the last row of the theatre and the view was great! Much of the action takes place on a raised proscenium, easy viewing from the last row of the mezzanine…who wants to hurt their head looking up in the orchestra. So, looking for the hottest selling show at a great price? Call Applause.

Revival of "Hair" is Amazing!
What a fabulous night at the theatre. "Hair" the musical is certainly the most fun I've had at any show this season! Where did it come from? I mean no one, I don't think, expects this show to succeed. After seeing the show last night at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, I think it's going to be the big hit of the season both critically and at the box office. The audience went nuts! Everyone thought that this years Tony for Best Revival would go to either Guys and Dolls(terrible reviews) or West Side Story(which opens tonight and I don't think the critics will be very kind, I was disappointed), but my feeling is that "Hair" will easily win Best Revival and hopefully the director will win as well. This show is not easy to stage and she does so brilliantly and uses every inch of the theatre to its maximum potential.
Everything from the amazing lighting, incredible sound and band on stage to the unbelievable cast. I went into the show having never seen a production of it nor have I seen the movie. I knew a few of the great songs of course, but I wasn't expecting much from it. Boy was I wrong. I couldn't take the smile off my face and I was rockin and rollin in my seat. I even got a hug from one of the hippie girls. Without giving anything away, this show has the audience up and dancing at the end and no one wanted to leave the theater! I left on a high without using the drugs! There is some strong language and sexual content(including some full frontal nudity at the end of the first act), but it's done tastefully and I think its fine for mature teens.
Believe me when I say, you'll have a blast at this high energy show! DO NOT wait to get your tickets to this show. Because after it opens to great reviews and word of mouth spreads, you may be in for a long wait for tickets. Get them now, trust me. Call an Applause Sales Expert now at 800-451-9930!!
