Having seen the last revival of La Cage Aux Folles five years ago I wasn't sure that Broadway was ready for or even needed another one. Now while the show won two Tony Awards that year including Best Musical Revival it was a financial flop and closed a little over seven months into it's run. Therefore when it was announced I was a little skeptical as I'm sure most people were. By now everybody knows the reason the show is coming back to Broadway is due to the recent London production which won several major awards and was a favorite of critics and audiences alike.
The show which opened at London's Chocolate Menier Factory in 2008 is the version that will be seen on Broadway. The last show that transferred from there was the highly successful revival of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George which was one of the best shows that I have ever seen. Will lighting strike twice? You're guess is as good as mine. Leading the cast for this new production is Douglas Hodge who won an Olivier Award for his performance as Albin and five-time Emmy Award winner Kelsey Grammar as his lover Georges. Reviews come out this Monday. Until next time theatre fans.
