Now I'll be the first to admit that I am not all that familiar with Anything Goes. Sure I know a couple of the songs and that it takes place on a ship but that is about it. As I am sure you have heard by the now this new revival being produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company is to be headlined by Tony winner and Broadway fave Sutton Foster.
The show which is set to begin previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 10, 2001 is being directed and choreographed by two-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall. Opening night is set for April 7. Now while I think that Ms. Foster is a very gifted performer I am a little weary about the show.
Yes I know Kathleen Marshall is an award winning director/choreographer with a lot of very good productions under her belt. Although I will say her recent production of Grease was one of the worst shows that I have ever seen. That includes the 1994 revival of the show. My main concern is with the show is it's producer. Over the last few years the Roundabout Theatre Company has been hit or miss.
Yes I loved their revival of Sunday In The Park With George but that was an import from London. They were just wise enough to bring it across the pond. Plus we all know how Bye Bye Birdie turned out. Bad reviews and truth be told a very amateurish production at best.
The 1987 revival was very well received and won several awards. Will lighting strike twice? We shall see. Regardless how it does I'm sure that the critics will shower Ms. Foster with praise and she will most likely get her usual Tony nomination for her performance. Until next time theater fans.
