A new Broadway show is playing at New York's American Airlines Theatre, located at 227 West 42nd Street and it's called Picnic. Picnic is a new production of a 1953 play that the Roundabout Theatre Company, one of the long time great show producers in New York City is staging. It originally debuted in New York City at the Music Box Theatre and ran for 477 performances.
Picnic tickets have been on sale for several weeks now. The show opens officially to critics reviews on January 13, 2013 for a limited run through February 24, 2013.
Picnic is written by William Inge who won a Pulitzer Prize for this work. The show is directed by Sam Gold who also directed Look Back in Anger a
nd Seminar. Stars of the show include Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn, Reed Birney, Elizabeth Marvel, Maggie Grace, Sebastian Stan, Ben Rappaport, Madeline Martin and Emmy Award winner Mare Winningham. Ms. Winningham recently performed in the very popular Off Broadway show Tribes.
The story line is a very interesting one indeed. It's Labor Day and some local ladies are getting ready for a picnic. As they prepare, a good looking young drifter named Hal uses his charming ways to flirt with a few of the women, both obviously excited to be near him. Several conflicts arise at the same time during the picnic and Hal is forced to leave town. Although Madge is conflicted over her relationship with both Hal and Alan, she finally comes to a conclusion about how she really feels and makes an important decision on what to do. Is she going to be with Hal or will she stay wit Alan?
