American Psycho On Broadway Closes After A Short Run In New York City

Last month I got to see a preview performance of this season's American Psycho and enjoyed it very much.  But then again, I've always been an "easy to please" theatergoer.  Lucky me, working for Applause-Tickets all these years I get to see just about every show being in the Broadway ticket selling business.

Unfortunately the critics didn't really care for this show and it will play its final performance today, Sunday June 5, 2016 at 730pm.  Ticket sales last week were somewhere near $440,000.00 out of a possible $1,052,000.00, drawing not even a 70% capacity.  Not very good for a new Broadway musical.

American Psycho tells the story of investment banker Benjamin Walker who indulgences in all the comforts of wealth, great clothes, fine dining and an all in all upscale lifestyle- yet at night-time turns into a psychopathic serial killer.  Can you imagine this?  The show is based on a best selling novel of 25 years ago or so and a popular cult film of the same name.

My guess is that the reason that American Psycho is closing is a sure lack of full priced ticket sales due to another exciting Broadway season with strong selling musicals like the mega-hit Hamilton as well as Waitress, Shuffle Along, School of Rock and She Loves Me.  And in general many other terrific plays, comedies and revivals of this season along with so many of the big ticket selling shows of season's past like Something Rotten, An American In Paris, Finding Neverland, and long running extremely popular shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Book of Mormon, Aladdin and The Lion King most assuredly hurt American Psycho and other new ones that opened this season.  In my entire 39 year career on Broadway I have seen many shows close way ahead of their time due to an intensely full roster of much bigger selling shows.  There's simply too many great productions to see these days.  The last 2 seasons in a row have been very solid for Broadway Theatre.

American Psycho closes 1 week ahead of Broadway's Tony Awards on June 12, 2016, the coveted awards show that recognizes excellence in the Broadway Theater every year.

I hope you enjoyed this post on my company's Applause Ticket News blog.
