That's right theatre fans. Last night was the Tony Awards. But of course you knew that didn't you? Now I have been watching the Tony Awards for as long as I can remember. I'll never forget my first one. A little show by the name of Les Miserables took the top prize that year. Now here we are over three decades later, and another groundbreaking show won the theatre's biggest prize.
You've all heard of a little show called Hamilton haven't you? I'm kidding of course. The show, which opened to rave reviews last year won eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical of the Year. Now I know this may be hard to believe but there are other show's that opened this past season. In fact I think this season was one of the most diverse and exciting season's we have had in a very long time. Let's take a look at some of these exciting show's shall we?
School of Rock- Based on the 2003 film of the same name, School of Rock opened to critical acclaim from both audiences and critic's alike. Not only that but it has an incredible score by Tony winner Andrew Lloyd Webber. How can it not be a hit? I loved the show when I saw it last Fall and you will too.
Waitress- Another musical based on a hit film. Now I loved the movie. But to be honest I was a little worried how it would translate to the stage. Well as it turns out I didn't have to worry at all. In fact I think I liked the show even more than the movie.
She Loves Me- One of the greatest experiences I ever had in the theatre was seeing the last revival of this charming musical. Not only that but I got to see it on Christmas Day. Does it get any better than that? By the way for those of you who haven't seen it, you only have until July 10 to see this unbelievable show.
The Color Purple- Winner of two Tony Awards last night. Best Musical Revival and a much deserved Tony Award for it's star, Cynthia Erivo. What? Hamilton can't win all the awards right? This inspiring musical is now on sale thru December 18. It is a must see.
The Humans-Winner of four Tony Awards, including Best Play of the Year. The show takes place on Thanksgiving as the Pennsylvania based Blake family gather at their daughters lower Manhattan apartment. As day turns into night, the evening takes a surprising turn as a series of unexpected noises causes the already dysfunctional family to face their deepest fears.
Now I know what you're thinking. That surely can't be it right? Of course not. Here is a list of other show's that opened this past season that are available.
Bright Star
Shuffle Along
Fiddler on the Roof
Long Day's Journey Into Night (Tony winner for Best Actress in a Play, Jessica Lange)
Eclipsed
The Crucible
The Father (Tony winner for Best Actor in a Play, Frank Langella)
On Your Feet
