I just found out that one of my favorite plays of the year, The Humans, will be playing its last performance at the Helen Hayes Theatre on July 24, 2016, taking a 2 week break while it moves its set design over to the considerably larger Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. 450 seats larger will lead to allot more ticket sales for sure. Performances will begin at The Humans new home on August 9, 2016. The show opened Off Broadway on October 25, 2015 then moved to its current home at the Helen Hayes Theatre. The show has received very positive reviews to date.
The Humans is an original new play by Stephen Karam and tells the story of a Pennsylvania family that comes to New York City to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their younger daughter and her boyfriend. Needless to say that we learn of the dysfunction in the family as we hear odd sounds during the night in the very old and in need of repair pre-war duplex apartment. After a while, the underlying tensions rise to the surface and the real family member feelings come to the surface. The show is funny while we also witness the sharing of some very deep feelings with one another. This is Mr. Karam's 6th play.
The Humans won Best Play at this years Tony Awards and is selling very well, especially for a non-musical. Actors Jayne Houdyshell and Reed Birney won Tony Awards for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Play for their performances in The Humans as well as a Tony Award for the incredible set design by David Zinn.
From time to time my colleague James W. Bruce and I at Applause-Tickets write blog posts to keep theatergoers up-to-date on the comings and goings of Broadway and Off Broadway shows. We welcome the opportunity to hear from you whether you may want to just pickup the phone and call us to talk about Broadway or chat with us on our Boldchat line. We like to think we're still one of the few ticket services that still believes in customer service. Sure people can go on-line and get lots of information on Broadway, Sports and Concert Events but why not call us when you get a chance? We love what we do and we really enjoy talking about the theater and live entertainment events. How about you?
I hope you found this post helpful. Cheers and good luck to the cast and creative team at The Humans, a unique Broadway show that should enjoy a long run at its new home at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City.
Best Regards
