One of my favorite theatrical experiences of all time, was seeing Bette Midler in her Tony Award winning performance as Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly.That production, which also won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Revival of the Year, has always been a sentimental favorite of mine, as it was the first show I ever performed in outside of my high school shows.
Now as you probably know, both the original production, as well as the celebrated revival, were both monster hit's that featured a variety of well known leading ladies. The Broadway production that is, not the Villa Grove Community Theatre production. Now here we are in 2020, and everyone's favorite matchmaker is back where she belongs.
Featuring music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Jerry Herman, and a book by Tony Award winner Michael Stewart, which is based on Thorton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning play The Matchmaker, Hello Dolly is set to begin previews at the Adelphi Theatre on August 11, 2020, and play thru March 6, 2021.
Starring as Dolly is four-time Olivier Award winner and Academy and Golden Globe Award nominee Imelda Staunton. Pretty good casting I have to say. Tickets for the limited engagement are now on sale.
