McCann and The Public Come to Agreement, HAIR in 'Very Healthy Shape'

The New York Times is reporting the positive news that the leaders of New York's Public Theater announced today, Thursday January 29th, that they have signed an agreement with the Broadway producer Elizabeth I. McCann that avoids legal action, threatened by Ms. McCann, over the upcoming transfer of the musical "Hair," which is scheduled to begin rehearsals on Friday.

The Times explains that "Ms. McCann was originally, with the Public, the lead producer of the show, which was a hit last summer in Central Park, but the Public moved her aside last month when she could not raise the money for its initial $6.5 million capitalization. Ms. McCann had suggested that she might sue, but Oskar Eustis, artistic director of the Public, said on Thursday that the theater and Ms. McCann had signed an agreement keeping her "as an above-the-title" producer. "The acrimony is completely behind us - there will be no lawsuits," Mr. Eustis said to the Times.

"We're in very healthy shape with more than $5 million in firm money, and we'll end up turning prospective producers away," Mr. Eustis said.

To read the entire Times Arts Beat story on Hair click here.

HAIR will begin preview performances on Friday, March 6, with Opening Night set for Tuesday, March 31, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 West 45th Street, New York City). Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel, the producing team that helped bring the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening to Broadway, have joined forces with The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew Hamingson) - as co-lead producers - to present the upcoming Broadway production.

The production will reunite most of the creative team of last summer's staging at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park: director Diane Paulus, set designer Scott Pask, costume designer Michael McDonald to design the lighting for the Broadway production.

Recently cited on more than 25 10-BEST-OF-THE-YEAR THEATER lists, including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Newsday, Time Out New York, and TIME Magazine, HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, and music by Galt MacDermot.

Broadway makes a comeback!

I just had to post this article on the current state of Broadway from Crain's. It basically says what I've been saying all along. That Broadway is never dead and we alway's make a comeback! We all love Broadway at Applause Theatre Service and it will always be with us! Enjoy!

A total of 40 new plays and musicals will open on the Great White Way during the 2008-09 season, the greatest number of productions to open since 1986-87.
Contrary to popular belief, the curtain is far from falling on Broadway.
In fact, if all scheduled shows open as planned over the next few months, the Great White Way will have more new productions than any season in the last two decades. A whopping 22 new shows are opening this spring, bringing the total of new plays and musicals to 40 for the 2008-09 season.
Though the number is just one more than last season, it still marks the most openings since 1986-87 when 43 shows opened, according to Bloomberg News.
“Despite the fact that like Chicken Little said, ‘the sky is falling,’ there are a lot of new productions,” said Daryl Roth, producer of the new Tovah Feldshuh play, Irena’s Vow, which opens March 29. “Of course everyone is a bit anxious to be sure that all the new plays and musicals find their audiences, but people are feeling optimistic.”
The next few months will be crowded. In addition to a number of big musicals, like 9 to 5 and West Side Story, 14 new plays—many with celebrities—will compete for cash-strapped audiences. The plays include 33 Variations, starring Jane Fonda, and God of Carnage, with James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden.
Though producers are optimistic, they acknowledge they will have to work harder to succeed in the middle of a major recession.
“You can’t just put up the marquee and think people are going to come,” Ms. Roth said. “We have to be very tenacious about reaching out to people and at the same time be frugal about how we’re spending.”
Despite all the new productions, the season has had a bumpy ride. So far, 26 shows have closed and there are still more than four months until the Tony Awards. That is just one less than the number of closings for the entire 2007-08 season.

Well one way to get people to come is by making Broadway more affordable and with the Applause Insider Deals we can make it more affordable for our customers! Call an Applause Sales Expert now to get your tickets at a great price. 800-451-9930

Sister Act Set To Open In London This Spring

It was announced today that Whoopi Goldberg is bringing her hit 1992 movie Sister Act to the London stage. Sister Act The Musical had it's world premier at the Pasadena Playhouse in the fall of 2006 followed by another production in Atlanta in January 2007. In a statement producer Goldberg said, "I am proud to announce that we've finally found you an amazing girl to play Deloris. It wasn't easy, but we did it. And boy, can she sing (unlike some people we know – me!). And in order to match her, we went for the best and we got the brilliant… Sheila Hancock is our Mother Superior, a legend and not just in my mind. I think together they will reinvent Sister Act and bring it to a whole new level…can you tell I'm excited?"

Show times will be Monday-Saturday at 7:30 PM with matinees Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3 PM.

Guys and Dolls Set To Begin Previews Next Week

I can't tell you how excited I am about the upcoming Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls. I was first introduced to the show during my senior year in high school when I played Benny Southstreet and I have been a fan ever since. From classic tunes like "Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat","Luck Be A Lady" and it's catchy title song, Guys and Dolls is a Broadway treasure. They don't write shows like this anymore. Thankfully director Des McAnuff(Jersey Boys,Tommy)has decided to bring this Broadway classic back to the Broadway stage for the first time in over a decade. Leading the dynamite cast are Oliver Platt and Lauren Graham as Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, and Graig Bierko and Kate Jennings Grant as Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown.I can't wait. Plus if you call Applause now we can get you seats to see Guys and Dolls and some incredible savings. The buzz on the show is pretty good so don't delay. See Guys and Dolls on Broadway. It is Broadway's greatest musical comedy after all. That's a bet even Nathan Detoit would take.

All Star Cast Set to Star on Broadway in "God of Carnage"!

Hollywood comes to Broadway this Spring! Big time with this amazing cast of characters! Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini(Tony Soprano) and Marcia Gay Harden will star in GOD OF CARNAGE, the new play by Yasmina Reza(ART), opening on Broadway at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45 Street) on Sunday March 22. Previews will begin on February 28.
The London critics raved about GOD OF CARNAGE: The Times called it “tense, edgy and funny” and praised Reza’s “incisive observation, acerbic wit and shrewd humor.” The Daily Telegraph called it “a crackling night” and The Daily Mail called the play ”terrific stuff . ” The Daily Express said it was “a triumph” and The International Herald Tribune proclaimed “‘God of Carnage’ is an expert piece of stagecraft and savagely funny.” GOD OF CARNAGE reunites the creative team that staged the Tony Award-winning Best Play, Art.

GOD OF CARNAGE is a comedy of manners without the manners. The play deals with the aftermath of a playground altercation between two boys and what happens when their parents meet to talk about it.

Jane Fonda's Live and Onstage next week on Broadway in the New Play "33 Variations"!

The last time Jane Fonda appeared on Broadway, John F. Kennedy was still in the White House and “Barbarella” was just a gleam in Roger Vadim’s eye. And now in just one week that Ms. Fonda will make her return to Broadway, after a 46-year absence, in “33 Variations,” a new play by Moisés Kaufman that is scheduled to open Monday 2/9 at 8pm. Ms. Fonda, 70, will star in the play as a musicologist studying the work of Beethoven; she was last seen on Broadway in a 1963 revival of “Strange Interlude.” The show will also mark the Broadway playwriting debut of Mr. Kaufman, who was nominated for a Tony in 2004 for his direction of Doug Wright’s “I Am My Own Wife.” It's about time that Ms. Fonda is back on the boards although it would have been nice if it were in August: Osage County! But I am sure this play will utilize all of her talents. Now if she would just return to the screen. So many parts out there and if she can get them made please! Ms Fonda return to the big screen too!
Believe it or not, if you call an Applause Sales Expert now, and I would certainly be one of those experts, you can get your tickets at an Insider Price! That means the best seats at an amazing price! Don't wait, this deal ain't gonna stick around for long! 800-451-9930

Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen Return to Broadway in "Impressionism" 2/28

Who's the dummy that claims Broadway is Dead?? With 15 shows set to open in the next couple of months, this show has got to be one of the most anticipated ones with Tony Award winners Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons returning to Broadway to star together in the world premiere of Impressionism, which opens at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Thursday, March 12, 2009. The production will begin preview performances on February 28.
The production will mark Ms. Allen’s first return to Broadway since The Heidi Chronicles in 1989, and Mr. Irons’ first time on Broadway since The Real Thing in 1984.
Mr. Irons won the Academy Award for Reversal of Fortune, and Ms. Allen is a three-time Academy Award nominee for The Contender, The Crucible and Nixon. The producers have just announced additional casting — Marsha Mason, Andre DeShields, Michael T. Weiss, Aaron Lazar, and Margarita Levieva. Wow! What a treat this will certainly be. The story itself seems to be a simple one though.

Impressionism is the story of a world traveling photojournalist and a New York gallery owner who discover each other and also that there might be an art to repairing broken lives. I say this has got to be an amazing story for this all-star cast to choose as their triumphant return to the Great White Way!

First Wives Club the Musical is Broadway Bound with Starry Cast!

Applause Theatre Service has learned that an all-star cast-including Ana Gasteyer, Carolee Carmello and Adriane Lenox — will appear in an industry reading of the new musical First Wives Club Feb. 2 in Manhattan. This same cast seems set to star in the World Premiere, Broadway-Bound musical! This is very exciting news to me who happens to be a huge fan of the movie which originally starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton. THE FIRST WIVES CLUB is a funny, moving and empowering story based on the smash-hit movie comedy and Olivia Goldsmith's bestselling novel. Former college friends reunite at middle-age and soon discover they share the same unhappy story - their ungrateful husbands careened into midlife by dumping them for younger women. After drowning their sorrows, they decide to put their long dormant talents to use, band together, and stylishly, systematically and hilariously get even with their exes! With new music by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends, Holland-Dozier-Holland (Stop! In the Name of Love, It's The Same Old Song, Baby Love, and many more), book by Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Curtains!) and direction by Francesca Zambello (Disney on Broadway's The Little Mermaid, The Guthrie Theatre's Little House on The Prairie The Musical), this glitzy new musical is destined to be the theatrical event of 2009!

Mary Stuart Comes to Broadway this Spring 2009

Dear theater friends,
We just received word that Mary Stuart, a very popular drama playing in London will begin performances on Broadway beginning March 30, 2009. The show will pay a very limited run of only 20 weeks at New York's Broadhurst Theater.

Written by Friedrich Schiller in 1800, Mary Stuart tells of the unique relationship between Elizabeth I (played by Harriet Walker) and her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots (played by Janet McTeer), who was Elizabeth's rival to the throne. The audience will get to witness behind-the-scenes intrigue complete with scheming and betrayal by the 2 main characters.

Mary Stuart has a "contemporary feel" and allows you to imagine you are experiencing a modern day political thriller. In addition, the show will have you on the edge of your seat as you see first hand one of the most electrifying dramatic confrontations in the world of theater, in which the author imagines a meeting between both monarchs on the grounds of Fotheringay Castle.

Please remember, this production of Mary Stuart is only 20 weeks long starting on March 30,2009. If this show sounds like something you might want to see this Spring on Broadway, kindly give the local ticket experts at Applause Theater Service a call on their local number at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930. Applause can secure amazing seats to Mary Stuart for the run of the show, possibly even at discount prices for "off peak" performance times.

If you think you might want to see additional theater, feel free to have a look at our up-to-date Broadway Show listing. Thanks for reading this post. We look forward to being of service to you, your friends and family whenever Broadway Theater is in your plans.

Sincerely,

David Hyde Pierce Returns to Broadway and Not TV this Spring in Accent on Youth!

I just read an article recently about David Hyde Pierce. He said that while he was singing and dancing on Broadway, producers were trying to woo him back to prime-time TV. "People have approached me about going back to TV," he said. "Basically, I said to them, 'I'm happy to look at scripts, but I don't want to go back to television.'"

At age 49, Pierce wants to do more theater! Well hurray for us!
"Curtains," the musical whodunit he starred in and won a Tony Award for, ran for 16-months. Now this spring, he returns to Broadway in a revival of the 1934 comedy "Accent on Youth" after taking some time off to rest for awhile. Well deserved I might add, going from Spamalot to Curtains. That's a heck of run doing 8 shows a week! What vitamins is he taking?!
Charles Kimbrough will star opposite David Hyde Pierce in Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Samson Raphaelson's Accent on Youth, to be directed by Daniel Sullivan, which will play Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, beginning on April 7, with an official opening on April 29.

In the play, successful playwright Stephen Gaye (Pierce) is about to abandon his latest script, when his young secretary offers him new inspiration. With her as his muse, he stages the show on Broadway, only to learn, to his dismay, that the show's young leading man is being inspired by her too. Kimbrough will play the role of Gaye's butler, Flogdell.

Irena's Vow set to Open at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway

Let me begin with full disclosure; I love Tovah Feldshuh. I have loved her since my tortured junior high school days. I would love her in a box, I would love her in her socks. I just love her. From the things that I've read about the out of town tryout, Tovah Feldshuh is giving an extraordinarily moving performance in Dan Gordon’s new play, “Irena’s Vow.” It is an acting turn that in some respects even tops her tour de force as Golda Meir. This time she is playing the real life character Irena Gut Opdyke, a Polish Catholic, who saved 12 refugee Jews from the Nazis at great risk and personal sacrifice. Feldshuh brings the character to life convincingly and powerfully in a great portrayal.

Irena's Vow on BroadwayPreviews: March 10, 2009
Opening: March 29, 2009
Venue: Walter Kerr Theatre, 219 West 48th Street, New York, NY 10036

Tovah Feldshuh stars as a real-life Polish Catholic who endeavors to save a dozen Jewish refugees during World War II. Irena's Vow is the uplifting true story about one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of World War II. During the German occupation of Poland, Irena Gut Opdyke was forced to work as head housekeeper for a very prominent Nazi major. Over a two year period of service, Irena would risk her own life in order to save the lives of twelve Jewish refugees whom she secretly took under her care. Irena's Vow is the extraordinary story of one woman's choice and the twelve lives that would ultimately be saved – or lost - by her decision.

Cirque du Soleil To Return To New York City This Spring

It was recently announced that Cirque du Soleil's lastest production KOOZA is set to open in New York City this April. Performances are set to begin on April 16th at the Grand Chapiteau, at Randall's Island Park. KOOZA is scheduled to run thru May 24th only but due to the popularity of Cirque du Soleil I would not be suprised if it is extended beyond that. According to a press release KOOZA tells the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world. KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil: It combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor.

Like so many other Cirque du Soleil productions in the past I expect this one to be a big seller so don't wait too long to get tickets. Call Applause now and get your tickets to see KOOZA. You won't be disappointed.

The 2009 London Theatre Season

Well it looks like the second half of the 2008-2009 London Season is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. From classic revivals to new works by some of London's most exciting playwrights London theatre has something for everyone. First up is the highly anticipated revival of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Performances begin April 30 at Theatre Royal Haymarket Company. Now for those of you that can't make it across the pond to see it don't fret. There is another star studded production of this theatre classic starring Tony winners Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin. Performances for the Broadway production of Waiting For Godot begin on April 10 and tickets are already going fast so don't delay.

Next up is a revival of Lionel Bart's beloved musical Oliver. Playing the role of Fagin is Mr. Bean star Rowan Atkinson. Playing the role of Nancy is Jodie Prenger who won the role via the BBC reality show "I'D Do Anything". Oliver has always been one of my favorite shows and the advance word on this production not to mention a healthy advance sale should make Oliver a big winner.

Other shows opening in the next few months include: The Royal Shakespeare Company's revival of its 2005 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Novello, starting Jan 15, followed by The Taming of the Shrew on Feb. 12.There is a new revival of Richard Greenberg's Three Days of Rain at the Apollo beginning on January 30, and a stage adaptation of the film On the Waterfront by its screenwriter Budd Schulberg, directed by Steven Berkoff, beginning Jan. 28 at the Haymarket Theatre.

What a season. Not only does Applause have access to these shows but we sell other shows in London as well. Here is a list of some of the many shows in London that are available.

Billy Elliot The Musical

Blood Brothers

Carousel

Dirty Dancing

Hairspray

Les Miserables

The Lion King

Mamma Mia

The Mousetrap

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

The Sound of Music

We Will Rock You

Wicked

Zorro

Applause loves dining at Taboon in New York City before going to Broadway

Dear theater friends,

Anyone that subscribes to our blog or buys their Broadway Show tickets from Applause knows one thing for sure. That their ticket requests have been taken care of with the greatest of care.

But did you know that lots of people are always asking us "where should we eat before the theatre"? Our ticket staff usually suggests several dining spots that are generally located in the theater district. Most of our clients seem to want to be near the theater they're going to so they don't have to rush around taking taxi's and risk being late for their show.

For those of you that really like a new and different dining experience before you attend a Broadway show, allow me to let you in on a really great "New York secret dining spot". It's a wonderful Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurant called Taboon. It's such a special place that they don't even have a web site although you can "Google it" and see lots of rave reviews and listings about Taboon on various restaurant type web sites.

Taboon is located at 773 Tenth Avenue at 52nd street, just a few blocks from the building where I live. Their phone number is 212-713-0271 and although they are located a little further west outside the theater district, its still only another 5-7 minutes to walk to most of the Broadway theaters. I promise you, you'll be glad you tried this place.

The 2009 ZAGAT Restaurant Guide says:
"Hot-from-the-taboon" breads, "sinfully creamy" hummus and other "heavenly" Med-Middle Eastern fare at "mid-range prices" are why this "out-of-the-way" Midtowner is often "packed" despite its "barren" 10th Avenue locale; "stylish" decor and "welcoming" service are other reasons its "worth the cab ride" west.

You should note that the Zagat guide has got the "food, decor and service" down pat but since you would be going to the theatre, then Taboon would not be out of the way for you. Although the theater district is located from 41st to 53rd streets and the Broadway area, Taboon will at most be a very short cab ride or not-to-far walk to your theater.

In particular, Taboon Restaurant is only a few blocks from the following Broadway shows:

Wicked

Jersey Boys

Shrek The Musical

Mamma Mia!

West Side Story

Billy Elliot

If you call Taboon to make a reservation, you might want to tell them that their "biggest fan", Rich Gladstone from Applause sent you. No need to though but if they look up my name, they'll see I eat there all the time. I know your going to love it. Of course when you top the night off with a great Broadway Show, you'll have a memory you'll cherish for a long time to come. I guaranteed a great night for you and your family.

If you want to talk about Taboon, other places to eat or Broadway, I hope you'll call Applause directly in New York City at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930.

Enjoy friends.

Rich Gladstone

Susan Sarandon And Geoffrey Rush Headline "Exit The King" Broadway Play

WHILE many of Broadway's musicals are either shuttering or sputtering, plays - with movie stars as their headliners - are sprouting all over Broadway and we here at Applause Theatre Service couldn't be happier. Big Movie Stars on Broadway make me VERY Happy!!
The latest mushroom: Eugene Ionesco's "Exit the King," starring two Oscar winners, Geoffrey Rush ("Shine") and Susan Sarandon ("Dead Man Walking"). EXIT THE KING will begin performances Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street) and open on Thursday, March 26, 2009. This limited engagement will run for 14 weeks only, through Sunday, June 14, 2009.
The two stars will be making their Broadway debuts in the production, which opens at the Barrymore in the spring, after "Speed-the-Plow" ends its limited run.
The production comes from Australia, where it received glowing reviews at the Belvoir St. Theatre in Sydney last year. A friend of mine saw it and told me that Rush, as a king whose empire is crumbling, was brilliant!
"Six Feet Under" star Lauren Ambrose (Awake and Sing!) and Tony Award winner Andrea Martin (My Favorite Year, Young Frankenstein) have joined the cast.
Exit the King, according to press notes, "is a hilarious and poignant comedy about a megalomaniacal ruler, King Berenger (Rush) whose incompetence has left his country in near ruin. Despite the efforts of Queen Marguerite (Sarandon) and the other members of the court to convince the King he has only 90 minutes left to live, he refuses to relinquish any control." Sounds hilarious!
So guys, don't hesitate in getting your tickets to this hot, hot production. Tickets will sell out fast! Call an Applause Sales Expert to book right away! We have the best seats at the very best prices! 800-451-9930

Waiting for Godot comes to Broadway

What do you get when you combine two very funny comic actors from New York and Samuel Beckett's comical wordplay of poetry? It's simple friends. The revival of Waiting for Godot starring Bill Irwin as Vladimir and Broadway's regular "funnyman" Nathan Lane as Estragon are set to begin previews on April 3, 2009 at the Studio 54 Theater in New York City.

The original production of Waiting for Godot played 51 years ago and it was most recently revived in 1988 with Steve Martin and Robin Williams playing the lead roles. This new production also has John Goodman, David Strathairn and Matthew Schecter appearing too. Wow, what a cast!

In Waiting for Godot, we see two tramps waiting for a person named Godot on a barren stretch of road but Godot never arrives. Although the two men claim to know Godot, they really hardly know him at all. They even say they wouldn't reconize him if they saw him. While they wait for him, to keep themselves busy- they eat, sleep, talk, argue, sing, play games, exercise and even discuss suicide. The show is subject to the viewer's interpretation as they search for mankind's never-ending search for meaning.

This production of Waiting for Godot should be quite popular with anyone who attends Broadway Shows regularly. This classic Beckett play along with a once in a lifetime chance to see a spectacular cast all together on stage at Studio 54 will be unforgettable indeed.

For information or to purchase tickets, you may contact the friendly ticket agency Applause Theatre Service in New York City. Rich Gladstone

OLIVER! opens at Drury Lane - good reviews and $22 million advance!

The whole gang here at Applause Theatre Service especially myself, are all excited about Cameron Mackintosh's production of Oliver! which opened last night at London's Drury Lane Theatre to rave reviews, this time with Rupert Goold directing the former Palladium production, originally helmed by Sam Mendes. Matthew Bourne repeats as choreographer. Rowan Atkinson stars as Fagin. The Nancy (Jodie Prenger, who got good notices today) was cast on BBC's reality TV show "I'd Do Anything". That marketing is probably the main reason why the show has a £15 million advance. (Variety reports it as $22 million.) The West End is hailing the musicals success as welcome relief during the current credit crunch. As Charles Spencer writes in his Telegraph review: "As most of us get poorer in coming months, this production is going to make producer Cameron Mackintosh even richer. It's so enjoyable however that I find it impossible to grudge him a penny."
Here's a link to an article about its box office success.
And here's a link to a funny article by Chris Wiegand in The Guardian, subtitled "With an artful dodge, pick a paragraph or two from the critics and pretend you've seen Rowan Atkinson's Fagin."
Five reviews for Oliver! follow. They're quite good on the whole.
Benedict Nightingale in The Times.
Michael Billington in The Guardian.
Charles Spencer in The Telegraph.
Nicholas de Jongh in the Evening Standard.
David Benedict in Variety.
