Final Week For Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific

That's right theatre fans. You only have eight more chances to see one of Broadway's most beloved shows of all time. I am of course talking about South Pacific. The show which will play it's final performance this Sunday won seven 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival.

When it closes it will have played a total of 37 previews and 1000 performances. Pretty impressive for a show that first premiered over fifty years ago. I have to tell you that I was not looking forward to the show when it was first announced. Oh sure I have been a fan of the show since I played Stewpot in my high school production.

Now while I generally love Lincoln Center Theater and the shows director Bartlett Sher I was a little hesitant about seeing the show. You see in the last few years most of the revivals on Broadway have been just so-so. Therefore when South Pacific was announced I was a bit hesitant about seeing it.

As turns out I shouldn't have. I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable evenings I have spent in the theatre in a long time. In fact I hate to see it go. However 2/12 years for a revival is pretty good run in my book. Don't forget that the show will air live tomorrow night on PBS. I strongly advise that you check it out if you get the chance. Revivals like these don't come around every day after all. Here's to South Pacific. What a show!
